      • Thanks Mate.
Something which I am not quite sure and still thinking, I read some comments on this thread saying, you can keep your gold status for end of this calendar year and next. If it's cancelled straight away, then I guess it's not actually true unless you actually pay $450

  • Can I choose other star alliance airline and atill get 50K point? KrisFlyer and Aeroplan which one is better. I’m often flying to Asia and Europe.

    • Aeroplan and Krisflyer gives you the same benefit.

      • I think the main difference is the duration of the Gold Status - Aeroplan had the best offer in this regard

        • It is provided you keep the card. If you don’t you’ll get downgraded either way irrespective of which card you choose.

      • But you don't get the 50k points with Krisflyer?

        • Has anyone been able to confirm this?

          • +1

@yh786: Don't think anyone has received the 50k points yet… as someone below mentioned: "After qualifying, please allow 6 to 8 weeks for the 50,000 Aeroplan point welcome bonus to be posted to your Aeroplan account."

  • Received my first HSBC statement today. Thought I'd check a couple of things:

    • Yeah same, got this a week ago:
      "Hello X,
Congratulations on achieving an important milestone with Star Alliance Rewards. You are now eligible for Star Alliance Gold Status.
You can now choose the Status Airline with which you wish to receive your status according to the terms of Star Alliance Rewards. You can change the Status Airline in your Star Alliance Rewards Account until 14 Nov 2023. Subsequently, we will request the status from the Status Airline that is reflected in your account at that time.
We hope that you will enjoy your future travels onboard our member airlines and wish you a rewarding journey."

      I already have Aeroplan nominated.

      • Ah I see the status date in the email now - great thanks!

      • Did you get 50K star alliance point or aroplan point?

  • Am I slow or is there no application link when you click through to th website?

  • Are you able to transfer the Star Alliance points earned on the credit card to any of the Star alliance partners, even if you nominate Aeroplan as status airline?

    • When I was in the portal earlier, it appeared that this was the case

    • don't think so, you're getting Aeroplan points, not Star Alliance points?

  • Hi,

I have signed up for the card, met the spend criteria, and have received the upgrade to Star Alliance Gold, however even after selecting Air Canada ( Aeroplan ) as partner, I still haven't received the bonus 50,000 Aeroplan points.

Is anyone else facing the same issue ? Is there a way to get the missing bonus points ?

    • How long did it take you to meet min spend and how long after that were you awarded the gold status?

  • As per details here: https://www.aircanada.com/au/en/aco/home/aeroplan/credit-car…

"After qualifying, please allow 6 to 8 weeks for the 50,000 Aeroplan point welcome bonus to be posted to your Aeroplan account."

  • Just to given an update if anyone wondering,I have received 50k Aeroplan gold status after email confirmation from HSBC and star alliance 15 days ago.
Status updated to Gold now in Aeroplane and no bonus points yet. I guess it will take few weeks to receive bonus points.

I am new to this, I have already googled and I still wondering someone can share lights on how to be more beneficial with gold status?

Can I use lounge access without booking flight ticket from star alliance airlines with gold status? TIA

    • +1
      • Thank you, so I have to book flight with star alliance partnered airlines to use lounge access option. There is no use of gold status if you travelling with different airlines.

        • I've found the card to be very underwhelming for this exact reason. I was certainly hoping to access the lounge while travelling on any airlines

          • +1

@tg786: We can still use the HSBC credit card lounge two pass per year, but not from the Gold status I guess. I am travelling soon I will give it a go and see what happens.

    • So did you airline status right away and then got gold after 15 days?

  • So I got ~2400 points automatically transferred across in my first month, and during the month you could see the 'Points to be credited' in the app slowly building up before the statement.

I'm a couple weeks into Month 2 spending but that 'Points to be credited' has been sitting at 0 since the auto transfer. Can anyone else confirm this is normal behaviour?

Do people get the 4k/Star Alliance Gold email as soon as you hit the spend, or does it come after the statement period auto transfer?

    Cheers

    • Got my gold status email once my first statement came in (I spent the $4K in the first month)

      • thanks mate - so most likely I'll just get it once my 2nd statement comes in then I guess!

        • +1

Why not wait to achieve gold at the start of next year. At least that way you get to enjoy it for two years instead of one.

          • @nightelves: because i'm not intending to renew this card when the membership fee is due november-ish next year, and you lose the gold as soon as you cancel apparently.

            • @heineken016: It’s only been confirmed with Singapore Krisflyer but hasn’t been confirmed with Air Canada Aeroplan yet.

              • @nightelves: fair enough. I'm passed the 4k limit anyway so no going back!

              • @nightelves: It’s same with them as well untill unless you renew your credit card and spend $60k to retain the gold status.

          • @nightelves: Hi, sorry for late question. Just found this deal. so if I applied in January, I will have 2 years gold status (provided that I retained the cc)? Thanks. Hope they will keep the deal til 29 Feb 24 as stated by op. Thanks

            • @Bargain-er: No Aeroplan will give you status for the remaining of that year and the next. Hence why everyone wants to get status at the start of the year.

        • just following up - got the gold status email before my second statement came out. So it's not tied to statement release

Just waiting the couple weeks before Star Rewards allocates it to my airline of choice, air Canada.

    • Same, in the first month my points were showing on the HSBC website but after the first month was transferred to Star Alliance my points for spend in month two are not showing. Also, my Aeroplan 50K status has been activated but my 50,000 Aeroplan points haven't so far.

      • Did the status come after the statement or after the spend was met?

        • My status came through after $3000 which was before the first statement.

  • +1

I suggest Op to update the following facts.

Even if you complete online facial verification you are required to either attend a HSBC branch or complete an Australia Post Verification. This includes existing customers.

    • +5

My application did not require this - new customer to HSBC and just followed the document upload process with same-day approval.

  • Anyone has any success accessing VA Melbourne lounge with this card? I’ve been denied access saying they are not aware of this and won’t allow.

    • +2

Did you use the Aeroplan app or the credit card?

VA is not a member of star alliance however if you have the 50K status with Aeroplan you should be able to get in.

      https://www.aircanada.com/ca/en/aco/home/aeroplan/status/pro…

I’m still waiting for the points.

      • Not the OP, but my Aeroplan/Star Alliance Gold comes through tomorrow and I flew VA BNE-MEL yesterday and it was DELAYED two hours - I was itching to give this a go

      • @moldybread Thank you very much for this info :)

    • +3

I have, with the Aeroplan App/Card. But I needed to explain that Aeroplan was Air Canada, and they had to look it up. But once that was done, no problem. This was a few months ago at VA Lounge in Melbs.

FYI for those trying to use this card to get star alliance Gold for a flight in the near future.

Upon reaching the $4000 spend limit, for issuance of star alliance Gold with your designated airline, there is a 14 day period for you to select/change your designated airline. After that 14 day period, star alliance will send notice to your designated airline, after which it then takes 1-14 days period for the Gold status to be issued.

    I.e.

17th Nov - spend limit reached and eligibility notified.
    1st December - star alliance notifies aeroplan/Krisflyer.
15th December (latest) - aeroplan/krisflyer gold status issued.

I've tried to use this card for a flight in the next two weeks, but have been told that my Gold won't be issued til 1st-15th December (hit spend limit on 16th Nov, notified on 17th November).

Under this scheme I'd suggest waiting til Jan 2024 to complete the card with aeroplan so that you get the full two years of Aeroplan gold status

    Hope this helps someone.

    • Thanks for this.
Since my card was approved on the 2nd of November, can I assume my monthly statement will be on the 2nd Dec?
I only ask due to having a flight 27th Jan and it would seem I would need to have finished my 4k spend before 31st Dec to guarantee that the Gold status comes thru on 2nd Jan (2nd statement)
So that 14 day window should be safe to receive Gold before my flights, thats my plan anyways

      • +2

With my experience, the spend limit wasn't linked to my monthly statement. As soon as I hit the 4k spend I was notified of "gold status eligibility".

4k spend before end of the year sounds reasonable assuming that hsbc/star alliance are timely.

        • It seems like gold status get issued before the 14 days?

    • I've got the gold status the next day from aeroplan, no need to wait for the second 14-day.

  • When did you get notified when your hit $4000? I think I just hit but nothing yet

    • +1

Have you been notified yet? Also have hit my spend but no notification. Thanks

      • +2

        Nope chasing them up daily

        • +2

Can you let us know when you get the email notification and how long to get gold afterward?

          • +1

@nightelves: Also hit $4k while back but no email notification yet…. Seems a bit inconsistent based on the experience shared by others here

            • +1

@FatGPT: Just got notified via email I am eligible. Spend achieved Monday-Tuesday just past.

          • +1

@nightelves: Just got it today too. I have also sent a complain to them. From what they said, everything is automated no matter how fast or slow you are. All emails are scheduled and the 14 days for "opting an airline" is also automated, which means they can't just shortened it.

            • @eminemkh: But would the request for gold status start when you select the airline?

              • +1

@nightelves: Yes, but you can select the airline the day you got your card approved, no point to wait for that 14 days, not to mention the subsequent wait for the points

                • @eminemkh: The gold upgrade I’m after.

                • @eminemkh: I agree. Would love to know how you go. I too am not keen on waiting on the 14 days when I’ve already selected Air Canada..!

        • +1

Thanks for coming back to me :) Nice to know I'm not the only one as others have quoted it coming instantly after spending the $4k.

  • How much time it took for you to receive the card? I got a letter with a pin code in 1 week after application (although I don't know when I was approved as they didn't notify me neither on email nor on sms). I got this pin 12 days ago and still haven't received the card itself. They keep sending me email reminding that I should activate my card which I already should have received. Is it normal or aupost messed up and lost my letter with the credit card?

    • +1

Approved Friday, card received next Wednesday - so around 3 business days. I'd say your card is most likely lost, so get in touch with them and they'll order a replacement card.

      • Yeah, I called them, they said the card should have arrived before the pin. So, they cancelled the card and sent a new one with a new pin.

  • Any idea on best way to spend 50k Aeroplan pts?

    • Have you received your 50K Aeroplan points?

  • does paying your tax bill count towards the spend requirement?

  • Does anyone know when you get the email from Star Alliance id?

    • I got mine within a few days of being approved.

      • still waiting for mine

    • You can find Star Alliance ID in your online banking.

      • Any other details on where?

        • Click on your credit card, manage account, rewards and offers, rewards redemption and youll see it there.

Unless you meant on where else to find your star alliance then no idea apart from the email.

          • @OfficerBarbrady: Ah the issue was 'rewards redemption' was blocked out - thanks for the response anyway. I was very confused!

  • +1

    My timeframe:

    26 Oct - Approved

    6 Nov - Met $4k spend

7 Nov - Email advising my nominated Star Alliance program would be converted to gold in 14 days time.

22 Nov - My Aeroplan went gold and I got an email to confirm this.

Now waiting hopefully on the 50k points

    • +1

      Ditto!

Exact timelines. Just waiting on the points now.

    • +1

Oh nice so it seems you have to wait the 14 days for the gold to arrive.

    • +1

Similar to me. No points yet but they will probably arrive with the next statement

    • What is the validity of Gold? 12 months from the date? or Dec 23?

      • +1

        31 December 2024.

    • Hi Uzb9811. Is that $4k spend including any pending transaction or confirmed transaction only on 6Nov?

      • You need the $4k to have been confirmed, not pending.

        • got it. Thanks mate!

    • Did you nominate the Star Alliance gold right away?

      • Yes

  • signed up Aeroplan few days ago, and linked Star Alliance. Card arrived. Upon checking Aeroplan account, found out my account got deactivated. Rang customer service got told system thinks my account is sus. Have to send aeroplan compliance my ID with address to resolve. Anyone has similar experience and has it resolved? If so what did you do and how long?

  • just got my "Congratulations! You are eligible for a Star Alliance Status" email yesterday.

  • Did you have to click “learn more” from aircanada website to go to hsbc site to apply the card?

I forgot it, and went to hsbc site myself and applied, will i still be able to get the 50k aeroplan points?

    • It's not a targeted link (from Aeroplan to HSBC) - so you're all good as long you choose Aeroplan in SA Rewards.
