  • I am signing up for this card first time. can you please confirm if my understanding below is correct:
    1. sign up for HSBC card
    2. sign up for star alliance (ID will be emailed by star alliance)
    3. sign up for air Canada
    4. Choose Air Canada from star alliance
    5. meet the required card spend
    6. receive 50k Aeroplan points + status. correct?

  • Has anyone succeeded matching this status to anything else?

  • Anyone knows how to get back to existing HSBC application process?

Already filled my application and got a reference number but haven't submitted yet.

HSBC website said they were going to send email with link so I can get back anytime. However, haven't received anything yet. It's been a few days as well.

  • Bugger, I got the card but my wife got rejected

Makes lounge access effectively unusable with 2 kids…

    • Call up and ask for re-assessment. Worth a shot.

      • Yeah might do that, but not sure if it will change the outcome if we don't know why it was rejected…

"For the avoidance of doubt we will not share any internal records or policies with you in relation to your application on the basis that this is commercially sensitive information."

    • i also got rejected, i called up twice asking for re assessment seeing as my income was more than double the requirement, after a fair bit of back and forth on the phone (asking for manager etc) 2 hours after my last call i got a text message saying it was approved on Friday evening

      • @offthetap Did you actually get to speak to a manager ? Or what was it that got through to them to get you across the line ?

Strangely enough when we called (after the rejection email), the lady on the phone acted like it was still being processed, and said to wait a day or two for a response. After some back and forth, she then said to send through some more docs. Did that straight away, but the application still looks rejected on their portal.

Will try and call Mon or Tue and see…

        • same thing happened to me, they called me 3 times asking for various different documents each time, after which point they still declined it. i then rang up and ask to speak to their manager, manager called me back, re processed it and then i got the approval a few hours later on friday

  • This article mentions tou can time the spending or sign up to potentially get 23 months of SA gold.

    Anyone know how this works?

Do you have to make sure you don't reach the $4,000 spend until Jan 1 2024 to be able to keep it until end of 2025?

      • +1

correct - reach your $4,000 spend in Jan 2024 and you'll have it until 2025 granted that you pay for the annual fee in the following year.

        • Thanks for sharing. May I ask how you confirmed this please?

          • @concento: if you check the star alliance webpage for membership renewals, Aeroplan states that the gold membership is valid for the following calendar year as well

            • @bawlingonabudget: If I cancel my card before next year, do I still have my gold status from Aeroplan in 2024?

              • @hishaken: unfortunately no. the second you cancel your HSBC card is when you lose Gold Status.

                • @bawlingonabudget: So that means max of 12 months if we don't want to pay annual fee

                  • @hishaken: You generally can get a refund of CC annual fees up to a month after renewal I've found

                    • @isthisreallife22: So in total it will be max of 13 months anyway right?

                      • @hishaken: Probably, which works nicely for anyone that gets gold this month I'd suggest :)

                      • @hishaken: yes, essentially you get 12 months of Gold Status and 23 months of Gold Status if you end up paying the annual fee in the second year.

                        • @bawlingonabudget: Does it mean even you are downgraded to silver, you can still get gold if you pay the annual fee?

                    • @isthisreallife22: could you elaborate on this? don't quite follow.

If I'm understanding this correctly, lets say I was to renew in Jan 2025 and then decide to cancel in Feb 2025, I get the the full cc fee back?

                      • @bawlingonabudget: I can't confirm that you would, but my experience with other providers has generally been even if you cancel shortly after the fee has been charged, they will refund the fee

                  • @hishaken: Its 10 or 11 months. Depends how long it take them to issue the gold status but it at least one statement period.

  • Do we need to provide HSBC with our star alliance ID or aeroplan number for crediting points?

  • Anyone else's application delayed? Applied 2 weeks ago and they say there's a problem with their IT

  • +1

just got a big fat decline for this card! boooo

    • WHYYYY

  • +1

Application submitted a couple of days ago and couldn't get pass the identity verification process.

Clicked on the link, captured ID but it took forever to load and just timed out in the end.

Still no email from HSBC at all. How many days does it normally take?

    • I had the same thing using Google Chrome. Used MS Edge and it went through

      • Ah i see. Should have tried that.

But it was via text so you open on your phone and mine is Samsung so no Edge only Chrome.

        Anyway submitted without it.

Been almost a week now. Will call them up later this week.

        • Mine went through within a few days and i got the card a week later. Put my kids term 4 school fees on it and i'm now on Star Alliance Gold Status :)

  • Did anyone have trouble in confirming their ID after applying for the card, As i sent 2x Id's plus bank statement and a phone call, But still got asked to confirm by going to my nearest branch in person

    • Just applied for mine today, it was conditionally approved. As an existing HSBC user - they still asked me to complete identification check at any HSBC Branch.
Did you do yours? or your application was approved prior to that?

      • Never been asked once to apply in person for a credit card with 4 different banks

Unforunatly the nearest HSBC bank is 7kms away and i work during busniess hours, auspost is 4kms, So I had to cancelled the card

    • I applied and went to HSBC branch in person. Good thing it was about 10 minutes drive from my home.

  • For some reason i thought i read somewhere that this will be matched to velocity gold. Is that a thing or did my mind play tricks on me ?

  • +1

So I have received this card and met the spend but am waiting for the 50k Aeroplan points.

I have a flight on Tuesday with Singapore Airlines, will I be able to access the partner lounges? If so, what do I have to present as evidence? My star alliance login?

    • +1

Please update when you get the point and status.

Looks like you might be the first to find our with this deal

Keen to see when it happens

My applicatuon still in approval process (2 weeks its been now).

I have a Singapore air fligh on 6 Jan and again 20 jan, so hoping I can get before then.

    • Have you got the email to get upgraded to gold?

      • Yep. I have my status but not points

        • hi @fivespice
I am in a similar situation. Have you got the points now?
If so, how long did you wait to get it?
          Thanks in advance.

        • I only got an email of my gold status but my aeroplan still have 0 and non gold. Anyway, we can show star alliance gold in website or app? Seems there s no login in Web and app doesn't show air Canada as FF option. Thanks

  • Any idea when this deal will expire?

Will be closing my velocity card in December, so just wondering if this deal will be still on?

    • Feb 29

      • Cheers!

        • You can find out the deal's end date by look a the calendar icon under the description

  • How much does this equate to in terms of cashback or gift cards?

      Would also like to know

  • +3

FYI, right after meeting $4,000 I got an email from Star Alliance that I got Gold status, it will be action on 10/11 (2 weeks from email) by requesting the Gold status from the airline nominated in my account at that time (Aeroplan).

Guess the 50,000 points would come after Aeroplan grant the Gold status.

    • +1

      Ditto for me.

How did you go with your wife’s lower income application?

    • hey mate, which airline did you nominate? Air Canada? I am wondering if I nominate Krisflyer still able to get the 50,000 points.

    • So if its true you can keep Gold for 2 years if Gold status is activated in Jan, then per your comment, it would mean the earliest you would want to hit your $4k spend is by 18 Dec so that 2 weeks later (1 Jan) its activated.

I have a Star alliance flight on 6 Jan, so lets see if I can make it.

However, I am still going back and forth with HSBC who are asking for more and more docs not just my pay slip and bank accounts, they want detailed tax return info.

      • +1

Yeah, for me almost on the same day my 4,000 was cleared (not pending), I got an email about the Gold status. And they will request the status from the nominated airline in 14 days from the email. Don’t know how long it takes the nominated airline to grant the Status though.

        • Please keep us posted once your Gold status is granted, keen to know the actual number days it's actioned.

          • @DaHuntz: I just got nominated (email came in 1st Nov) and it says it'll be actioned by 15th Nov fyi.

            • @bawlingonabudget: Did you get your points? I got my status but not points.

              • @fivespice: Yet to get my points although I didn't even reach the $4k spend (currently at $3997) so I'm trying to make them withdraw my Gold Status for now as I'm aiming to finish it by Jan

            • @bawlingonabudget: How long after you made the spend did you get the email?

              • @nightelves: well the thing is I didn't even reach the $4k spend and I got it pretty quickly, it's rather bizarre

                • @bawlingonabudget: Wait how much spend did you make?

                  • @nightelves: $3997. HSBC are investigating it now. I was purposely holding out till Jan so I can get the 2 years of Gold Status. This early trigger of Gold Status ruins those plans unfortunately…

                    • @bawlingonabudget: Yeah that’s what I’m holding out for as well. Have not making any spend till late December

          • @DaHuntz: I got the Gold status exactly 2 weeks after the email, today.

            • @amorphous2111: Thanks for letting me know.

            • @amorphous2111: Is that after the statement or after the spend.

              • @nightelves: after their email saying that they will request the Gold status from the airline chosen in my Star Alliance account in 14 days. Then my AirCanada status changed to 50K exactly on the 14th day.

                • @amorphous2111: That I get but did you make the $4k spend and after two weeks got the email or made the spend and got the email straightaway.

      • similar thing happened to me. 3 separate calls from HSBC requiring various different documents each time. usually to do with income though, employment contracts etc. i was denied at first, kicked up a fuss and then approved a day later

      • so it's 2 years from achieving gold, not from the day the card is approved? Here I am thinking I should wait and apply in Jan lol

    • Was this spending $4000 or after you had repaid it?

  • Getting this for ANA tickets to japan. Does anyone know if I can get the points on the first month if I get spend enough?

  • Just got approved for this card. Surprisingly quick as it only took 30 minutes including verifying ID and upload bank statements.
Should I nominate my airline right after I sign up for Star Alliance or should I wait until I meet the spending requirements? Or it doesnt really matter?

  • Question: if we apply for the card before the end of Feb, 2023, would it allow us enough time to get Air Canada Gold?

  • I am about $3 short of my $4000 spend (as I am planning to reach it by Jan 2024) and they've sent the 'Star Alliance Gold Status' eligibility email which I'm not too happy about.
Any suggestion on how I can get them to withdraw it until I actually reach the spend?

  • Hi question.

does anyone know whether I can apply for the card, and then sub my wife a card, and then she uses her card to buy tickets with the Gold Status perks?

She is planning on doign some travelling (without me), so wanting to see if she can get the perks.

She isn't eligible to apply for the card which is why it needs to go through me.

    thanks

    • No, the CC only provides the Star Alliance status to the main holder, which would be you. Having a sub card wouldn't provide additional status. Gold Status benefits are only provided to the holder of the status as well as guests when travelling with the holder.

      • As I thought. Thank you for confirming. That's a bummer.

  • It looks like availability for partner airline is extremely tight. Looking at ANA Sydney to Tokyo in late april

    • Yes, seems they only have routes to North America. When trying to see if can book to Singapore, i got an error said "This route cannot be booked online.
However, one of our Star Alliance partners may offer flights on this route, and reservation can be completed by calling Air Canada Reservations."

Has anyone trying book by calling them? Can I redeem 50K points for a return flight to Singapore?

      • Canada is probably the next big international trip I hope to do, so fingers crossed it's at least good for AU <-> CA routes

  • Does anyone have issues linking aeroplan membership to krisflyer account? How do we get SQ to recognise the aeroplan gold status if the frequent flyer number is not included in the flight booking?

  • I've got my gold status on Aeroplan but don't see the points yet. Anyone have the same?

    • I got the email from Star Alliance but no points

      • Have you got gold status on Aeroplan?

      • same here. have you got it now? @isthisreallife22

  • If I cancel the card, will I still have gold status for the current year?

    • You'll lost the gold status straight away.

      • So I have to have card open and hold it to next year in order to qualify for air Canada gold for two years?

  • Can someone please confirm if I get Gold status on Jan 2024, Can I still keep it till Dec 2025 if I cancel the card?

From T&C, This is what I have found:

"Any status granted under the HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card is withdrawn immediately if you close your HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card account. "
    https://www.aircanada.com/au/en/aco/home/aeroplan/credit-car…

Seems to me unless you pay the $450 renewal fee, you can't continue with the Gold status. I was planning to get the card on Jan 2024 expecting I can keep the 'Gold' status but doesn't seem it's possible without paying the renewal fee.

    • If you cancel the card you will lose gold status straight away.
