  • Refurbished is different to box damaged?

    • +3

I think with Sony eBay it's a bit of a gamble what you get in the box.

      • +2

I ordered one in January and ended up refusing delivery as it had holes in the box, and I didn't want to take chances

took a few weeks to get money back

        • You bought box damaged goods then refused delivery when the item that arrived had a damaged box?

          • -5

@boretentsu: that's exactly the way it went down! it wasn't like you know, light damage, slightly maimed kinda thing

it was an honest to god hole.

I purchased a "damaged box" product, not "holes in the box" Schrodinger kinda layout

    • +3

I got my refurbished A80J 55" TV from Sony's eBay store in July at the same price. The box was old, the frame was damaged, and the screen was bent.

You definitely should go for a damaged box listings those are in totally brand new condition.

      • screen was bent

Are you sure that you were not buying a curved screen TV? :P

My theory is refurbished represents the TV’s that were purchased and returned by customers (for whatever reason, but boxes opened for sure). The box damaged units were tv’s sold to stores but that store couldn’t sell the unit and returned it to Sony for credit. This is just a theory - no idea if I’m right or not.

    • What's the difference when it says seconds? Is that refurbished as well or just box damaged

  • Box damaged its assumed the product inside is brand new so your protections under Consumer Law are no different. Its a mindfield and huge risk with refurbished especially when you don't know reasons for refurbishing, was it a scratch on bezel or an internal fault, how long has it been used before resold?

    • -2

It's certified refurbished by Sony, so it should be in like-new condition. No different to buying a refurb from Apple etc; they test everything before certifying it so there shouldn't be any major issues. Comes with one year warranty from Sony and ACL applies the same whether a product is new or refurbished.

      • Exactly, if the product you received does not match the description or is in a damaged condition, you can either return it for a full refund or request a partial refund as compensation for the issues. Make sure to contact the Sony customer service and explain the situation to resolve the matter.

        • A bit of cost to return it though (if through Ebay).

      • +2

Sony eBay are pretty poor. I purchased refurbished first, tv arrived in obviously used but acceptable physical condition. Developed a major fault after two days and had to go through all sorts of hell to get a refund. Sony wouldn’t issue a refund until they inspected the fault despite me sending photos of half a blue screen. No updates after a week of it arriving at their warehouse so had to get eBay involved and they’re the ones that forced a (instant) refund. Bought box damaged after that and it’s been fine for the last 8 or so months.
Just buy box damaged or new unless you’re willing to go through the hassle everyone else has.

    • +3

For some refurbs, such as the Sony headphones, I think the sheer number of them should raise an eyebrow and warrant concern for the lack of durability they had.

    • How would you enforce ACL to a company ? In my experience ACCC told me they will not act on my behalf but i can make a complaint. Or is there another government body that will?

      • Consumer Affairs

      • +1

You’ll need to get a judgement at the relevant administrative tribunal in your state. Here in Victoria it’s called VCAT. It’s NCAT in NSW. Most proceedings are informal and do not need lawyers.

Consumer Affairs cannot meaningfully help you.

    • So is that why you gave it -ve? It seems quite good value considering anyone can return the item if it isn't as new.

  • Hi Guys

Can someone help me choose a 55" TV under $2k - essentially looking for one that should last 5+ years and is excellent for sports. I'm coming from a recently diseased panasonic plasma.

    Other brands?

    • +4

A80K for sure, being a good quality OLED over the others (and brand new). Personally I’d only go with Sony or LG’s OLEDs due to my preference for their colour reproduction, so between those two it would come down to price and design preference. Don’t get a refurb whatever you do. Box damaged is generally fine.

      • thanks!

I bought a price-matched XR83A90J at Sony online yesterday for $5,034 but just saw the refurb sale for the same TV today at $4699. Just wondering if I should cancel the new unit and get a refurb (seeing that they are often new anyway). Or should I play it safe and and stay with the new unit?

    • +8

for a difference of effectively $300 on a 5 grand purchase - I'd play it safe

    • Wow DSOTM. Great price for 83A90J. Who did you price match to? Would you mind uploading your receipt?! I’m keen to get a new one.

      • I can’t remember who I price matched it with, and I also got a 10% Sony welcome voucher. It was about six months ago and it’s just been sitting in my cart ever since.

        • Oh i thought you had bought the tv? I would be happy to buy it for that price! Will sony price match a historical price match?

          • +1

@Vandal99: No I bought the 83” on Saturday. They will match the price if it’s active and current but not retrospectively. You can though leave the matched price in your Sony account cart for months until you want to put the CC though.

Refurbished for $1300 is not a good deal.

  • +1

So many models, is there such a thing as a tier list for their model range?

    • +6

      A95 QD oled
      A80 oled

Then below that is their led range
      X95 (mini led)
      X90/ (full array backlight)
X85 (full array backlight, weaker processor)
X80 and down are varying levels of edge lit range (better to go for brands like TCL then low end Sony).

** obviously whilst Oled is best picture quality objectively it might not be right for you, consider your entertainment setup, how much ambient light is in room, etc. Best value is x90 for led and the a80 for the oled, these 2 models should be the go to for most people that want quality but dont want to pay a huge premium tax

    • +4

For the letters, the later the letter the more recent it is. J for 2021, K for 2022 and L for 2023.

      • LCD: Look at the higher tier 90 or 95 models such as the X90J for best picture quality.

      • OLED: A80 and A90 are their main ones such as this model the A80J from 2021.

      • +2

Oh thanks guys, good to know, especially the J,K,L part. I was looking at the XR65A80L (Box Damaged) for $2699 but not sure if it is worth it, when there are other larger size that turns out cheaper, now it kinda of make sense. Never went with a box damaged before, but seems still good value when JB selling the same for $3995.

  • I bought this last time, and wow its fantastic

    • Did you buy new or a refurb?

      • refurb, no issues at all

  • Got this TV, I love it.
Even the Google tv works really well in it.
There's still updates coming out too.

    https://store.sony.com.au/television-OLED/XR55A80K.html

On back order now, but using the 10% new user coupon at mysony, the TV comes down to 1,709.1 - and the 5% shopback tracked at 77.69 - which gives a total cost at $1631 for a new tv.

$30 more than the all time low for a BRAND NEW tv, nearly 7 months ago, a month from black Friday… yeah, definitely holding off and would recommend all others do the same.

    • Hold off for what exactly? When do you think we'll see new 55" OLEDs back at this price? Any reason to think Black Friday would deliver the goods?

  • Any suggestions for 65in OLED <$2000?
I find out a good one need >$3000

Those are the option within my budget
    1. Hisense X8HAU new $1399
    2. Kogan OLED TV new $1799
    3. Samsung s95b refurbished $2,000.00 from Appliances Warehouse
    5. Sony A80J Refurbished $ 2199 from this post

Should I give it a try for Hisense one? Or pay 60% more for the LG one?

  • I purchased the A80J refurbished maybe a year ago ($1500) and it died after 1 day of use. Got a replacement maybe after a month which actually died after a couple of weeks. Both had the same issue, just wouldn't turn on.
I decided to just get a refund but they offered me the A80K instead. I accepted and after another month it rocked up but guess what, it was a A80J. Took another month or 2 to finally get the A80K as I believe they didn't have stock being the newer model at the time.
It took roughly 6 months to finally get a working TV and by that time the hype had worn off. The A80K has been a great TV, not sure is it was a refurbished or a brand new one after all the issues.

  • The TV in my bedroom broke and I need to replace it. Can't decide between this now or waiting for BF.

  • Bought an A80K certified refurbished off their eBay for $1300 a few weeks ago. One tiny scratch on the side of the bezel that’s hardly noticeable other than that the TV is brand new.

  • Bought one of these "refurbished" from eBay back in June. No damage (that I noticed or have noticed) and the panel had 0 hours on it!

  • I bought a box-damaged A80j and found like 50-100 dead pixels, asked for a replacement;

Today I got the replacement with also 50-100 dead pixels.

I doubt they are not really a batch of "box-damaged", but with dead pixels (on both top left / right corners) that some people won't be careful enough to pick them out.
