I know it’s a discount but still find it gross to buy and use refurb headphones. You don’t know whose grubby ears they have been on before also the fact that it’s a used battery with decreased life and if they have been heavily used blasting music previously.

Anyone have any good experiences from used headphones before ?

    • +11

      My advice to U.

Don't buy these if you can't look past someone else's ear cheese

    • +9

Sony Refurbished are brand new, with the 5 pairs I've bought they've all been brand new, no wear or tear, no smell in the ear cups, no signs of wear. Boxes did come a little roughed up but it's fine.

      • This one that I got is a actual second not box damaged :(

    • +4

I believe most of these refurbs get new socks and are usually built from DOA parts that haven't really been used. I've bought 2 sets on the past, both in-ear and over ear and they both looked brand new with a fresh bag of inner ear socks (for the inner ear ones), only thing that identifies it as refurbished is marks on the packaging

    • +53

Then let me tell you a dirty secret about vegetables. They dig them out of the ground. Literal dirt. But before that, they often throw actual animal shit on them! I'm not joking. And people buy that stuff to eat!!

      • +3

I'd happily roll in dirt before I roll in someone else's ear wax and dead skin.

        • +10

I hope you dont use AirBnB or hotels. You could be rollin' around in a lot of funky stuff.

          • +5

            @turtlesinmypants: That's the reason I stay at AirBnB and hotels. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

      • +8

Don't get me started on where eggs come out of!

      • +8

I wonder how do these people have sex? i mean sex is pretty gross

        • Because you do it with people you want to do it with and are attracted to.

          • @lonewolf: who would do it with people who they are not attracted to, unless they are a prostitute, or onlyfans models, but thats not the point, these people are gross out by second hand headphones yet has no qualm to ingest bodily fluid from any random person they are attracted to with no guarantee that the person they are attracted to is clean or STD free

            • @zerochill: That is precisely the point, People would be willing to use headphones of other people that they are comfortable with / partners / family etc as opposed to random strangers.

    • +1

Yes, have the WF 1K XM3 refurbs from 2021 and they're still going well (think I paid $136).

They came looking new apart from the box as others have stated.

    • +1

not sure how accurate but eBay link here says if certified refurb it should be like new with100% battery life.
      https://pages.ebay.com.au/refurbished-program/#certified

Also get 12 month warranty and money back guarantee.

    • +6

It's a perfectly rational fear to have but the refurb business wouldn't last long if they were sending you stuff with earwax on. Every refurb model I've bought has been spotless. I've also had a pair of XM4 buds stop charging and returned them and got a replacement.

    • I feel exactly the same way with any Refurb stuff.

But there must be a market for it…

    • +1

The sony XM5's I got seemed like they had never been opened, feels like pot luck on sony refurb

    • +2

You could always change the muffs yourself on the headphones and clean the fabric covering the grill with light dishsoap. With earphones you can take off the caps and disinfect with ethanol and brush away wax with a toothbrush or TP.

This is the deal you get when it comes to refurbs.

      • +2

You could, except all my ear pieces from Sony refurb have come feeling and looking like new with no marks or defects, and earphones come with a full set of replacement buds.

  • +1

If I was going to go high end noise cancelling headphones to wear around the house would I go Sony or Bose or? I'd be willing to spend between $350 and $500. I LOVE my Sonos system, but they don't have headphones if that helps predict the kinda audio features I am into.

    • +1

Sony sound better, are more comfortable and have better noise cancelling than Bose.

Best sounding in that price range are Sennheiser but they lack equivalent “quality of life” features you find in Sonos and if you are happy with Sonos sound quality I think it is likely you will be happy with Sony also.

    • -1

      definitely bose.

sony's house sound on consumer audio gear are a… acquired taste. unless it's your first semi-major headphone purchase, then everything sounds "great".

      • Disagree, Sony's sound on their high end headphones is consistently well reviewed while Bose has notoriously been coasting on its name since about 1985.

        • +1

BOSE = Buy Other Sound Equipment

          • @stephendt: Exactly, although constantly touted as a bargain here.

          • -1

@stephendt: if you base your purchasing decisions based on edgy sweeping statements of entire companies instead of evaluating the merits of relevant products/segments, do everyone a favour and just don't comment

            • +1

@xrailgun: Aww c'mon, edgy sweeping statements are fun though

        • -1

i wasn't talking about "high end" though… ~$300-$500 is decidedly not "high end" in this context.

      • I have Sony XM3 and loved it. One of my friend have both Sony and Bose NC headphones and he liked Sony's sound quality. NC he said was similar, but for longer hours, he preferred Bose.

      • +1

Bose doesn't even have ldac or aptx hd support…

    • +1

Sony sound a little better but Bose are way more comfortable imo.

  • +1

works on Box Damaged items well

    • +1

Works on Box Damaged from Sony but not at other stores I looked at (camera stores).

  • +2

I went to buy and saw that newer WH1000XM5B is also available refurb… hoping box damage.
    $398 -20% = $318.40
Also did it on cash rewards so hoping for an extra 2.5% which would bring it down to $310.

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/285114035521?epid=3055061403&has…

    • +1

      That's a really great price!

    • wouldnt count on CB, coupon isnt listed and I thought category was 0.4% anyway?

Still a good deal, of course!

    • OOS

    • Damn. I just bought a pair of these last week. Was waiting for the price to come down and had that $20 off voucher…

      • +1

Don’t get beat up about it. These headphones are popular, there’s a good chance they might get sold out if you wait for the refurb discount codes.

  • Is the Lenovo ThinkPad P53s (i7 8665u 1.90Ghz 32GB RAM 512GB SSD Quadro 15.6 Win 11) for $796 a good deal? Use case is heavy university work.

    • +3

Pretty pricey for a 6 year old laptop. And depends on who refurbed it, battery could be shot.

Depends what heavy university work means too.

      • Thanks

      • +1

Heavy uni work means at least 8 hours use a day, that battery is going to be shot.

  • Thanks. Picked up the boxed damaged KD75X85K for $1.4k

    • Tossing up if i want to grab one for the theater room ill be making in my new house build, it is like 6 months away though.

      • Looks like I bagged the last one, as it's showing out of stock now. But then again, there is always the 85 inch and 90+ inch screens too :-)

        • +1

I actually want an 85 for the theater room haha! Really holding out though since its still like 6 months minimum away until im in the house.

  • Just bought 1000XM5 for 318.4

  • Hey all, anyone know if I can claim the TRS on this refurb item? Thanks

    • +2

As long as you have an invoice that shows the ABN and GST amount, I don't see why not.

      • +4

Good thing is the tax invoice will show pre eBay discount price.

  • -1

Hi I just bought the XM4s overhead. Just wondering for those who have purchased before, what should I be expecting, is it an open box or just damaged box?

    • From what I've seen its usually damaged box

      • I managed to ordered the XM5. Will be interesting to see if it is open box or damaged box - I will update this forum when delivered

  • Under $600 for an "as-new" Galaxy flip 4 has me tempted!

  • +3

Looks like the XM4 and XM5's are both out of stock. Bugger - was trying to work out which one to get.

    • +1

You have to be quick with the WH1000 XM4's and XM5's at these prices. They usually sold like hot cakes.

  • 48" A90K OLED seems to be a decent deal for $1499, just $100 more compared to the $1399 42" deal. Still one left.

  • +3

Really good price on the iphones. I picked up a 12 mini for $450 in the last sale, expecting it to not be that great, but it was in perfect condition with 100% battery remaining. Most auctions end at a higher price than that

  • been hunting for a deal on the WF5s, hopefully they come up next time

  • Some decent Surface Pro

  • -6

There is no deal posted… what gives? Thought that a specific deal must be posted.

    • Nothing gives, 'been this way for a looong time 😜

      • -1

that's pretty crappy then… basic advertising. Where is the deal????

        • Take it up with the mods. I did not invent the rules here. You have been here for a while. Surely you have seen similar posts that others (mods included) put up? 😜

          • -1

@Buy2Much: every post on the front page has a deal. All else is spam advertising. A discount on second hand items does not automatically constitute a deal.

            • @Logical: So no one can post discount codes that are helpful to hundreds other people unless they meet the exact standard dictated by one member (not even a mod)?

              • -1

@Buy2Much: down go the standards, down down down. Follow Coles and get that $1.4B profit and mislead people.

            • @Logical: And yet 119 other ppl disagree with you.

It's a great deal with plenty of savings to be had. If it's apparent that there is no good deals and it's just a discount code that brings things down to the levels of other regular prices, then sure, force them to post a deal or two. This one has so many good deals that it's not an issue.

              • -2

@The Hobo: shouldn't be difficult then for OP to put up a few 'good deals' then.

As for 119 people, you do know that bots exist, as do users with multiple accounts too.

  • +1

Thanks OP. Was looking for an Atmos AV receiver and bought this: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/285494650855?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mk…

  • +3

Anyone contemplating purchasing any Sony in-ear wireless buds must watch this video:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u525qqRHonM

You've been warned! Stay away from Sony earphones until:
    1. Major recall is announced (highly unlikely)
    2. There is independent confirmation that the issue is resolved for good

    • so the normal XM4 or 5 NC headphones are free from this?

      • +1

        yes

  • Reefer22 ?

  • +1

Cheers op, just got a phone , my iPhone 8 was dead

  • +2

Really hope that they restock the headphones 😐

  • The Acer Veriton N4640G Micro Intel i5 6500T 2.50GHz 8GB RAM 128GB SSD Win 10 for $100 seems like a good deal for a SFF PC - 192 mm W x 204 mm D x 33 mm H.

The Acer Veriton X6640G for $93 is even cheaper and faster but also bigger.

Similar price to a Raspberry Pi, bigger and no GPIO. Any opinions on these for home servers, Home Assistant, etc.? I've seen some generally positive comments in other threads.

    • I have the same question, they seem great for a little proxmox cluster

    • +1

6th Gen processor. I would suggest not go below 8th Gen processor.

  • They have hiked up all the older Refub iPad prices…

  • +1

Harris technology increased their price for most items.

    • Thanks, will not buy from them in the future!

  • +1

    ty bought a 2 in 1 laptop for $233

  • Has anyone found a tracking number was created but the item was misplaced from the delivery to AusPost?
This has happened before with this seller when I purchased items at great discount so kinda suss.
