Personally I'd recommend anyone starting out on their points journey to steer clear of Qantas and opt for Velocity going forward. Qantas reward flights are getting too difficult to find.

    • +2

Velocity has less destinations/routes but does have a bit better availability on those routes.

    • Agree. Been liking Velocity a lot lately and they’re starting to take on new partners.

    • Qantas hasn't gone bankrupt

Only if you are looking for flights out of Australia, if you use your imagination you can actually find a lot of good options!

      • I mean yea.

But in the past it was EASY to find availability in and out of Australia, even during peak periods provided you booked early. I did a search yesterday of business class flights on Emirates (Qantas' biggest partner) 1 way 1 person business class next year. There were 2 seats. TWO.

Previously there were like seats every few days from/to Australia. But if you search Europe to Asia on EMirates, tons of availability.

        • Definitely! I have done heaps of lush flights to/from europe as you suggest but you dont think the proliferation of online shopping and promotions like the above, off the back of the entire world being locked down for ~2yrs might have something to do with that though?

I am by no means a qantas bootlicker but demand for travel is high right now from what I can tell, hopefully it calms down a bit into 2024

          • @RR88: I think at a certain point we need to accept that the lockdown recovery of points has evened out, and Qantas is genuinely stingy, and they have really not kept relationships up with partners like Qantas (where AA, Alaska and virgin all have more availability with that airline than qantas do).

        • +1

The only reason there is Emirates availability is because its not actually worth it, you have to pay a massive cash fee alongside the points (like $2k one way to europe)

    • If anything, I think making the most of this deal for those starting to churn to be pretty compelling.

Sign up for a Qantas card every ~12months or so to get the card sign up bonus of ~75,000-100,000, adding the 15,000 Qantas bonus. Once the points have been received, churn away and use the rest of the year/13 months to churn Velocity and hope that Qantas continue to bring back these added bonuses (which to date, they have for the past few years).

Use Qantas Wellbeing to ensure the non-expiry of QFF points.

      • Normal churners get 2-3 cards per year. Some have pushed for 6 a year, but i've been rejected if I go more than 3.

You actually use them for flights? Then your actually spending money instead of saving money. I personally would never buy a business class ticket, because for the price I am happy to sit in economy for a few hours. Even with points, it still costs you an extra thousand or more to get the upgrade. Whereas, on the other hand, you can use points to buy appliances (during a FF shop sale) or Coles vouchers and avoid spending money on the stuff you actually do buy.

      • +3

I wouldn't use them for anything but premium flights. Using them for international reward fares in business/first is by far the highest value use of points.

        • I guess it depends if your goal is to maximise the value from the points (at a greater expense), or to minimise expenses.

        • I agree (and do use them for flights), but that poster's point is that it all depends on how you value a business class flight. They say they are happy enough to sit in economy, so may only value business class over an economy seat at say $500 extra over the cost of the economy seat. In which case the 'highest value' proposition might change, and something else may be best.

Using points for economy is generally terrible value, unless you have a family of 4. Based on your comment above, it seems you haven't quite got the hang of how the ROI works with points and the value. There is a difference between saver level reward flights (which is like 200k points max business to Europe), and everyday points (which is a 1 million points+ for the same ticket). Always always take saver level reward seats.

Yes you need more points for business class, but Business class is also 5-6x the cost of an Economy ticket. It is not 5-6x extra points for Business class ticket. The experience with the lounge, the lie flat seats, the bedding, the food, the service etc is truly worth using points for.

Using points for appliances is the ABSOLUTE worst value and the way airlines trick you into using your points. It's about the dollar cost average, and you are seriously losing value for buying an appliance with points (unless you have millions of points, in which case you can get away with it since it will make a dent). This is a trick airlines use to get people to spend their points on every day items.

It's about getting the best value out of your points.

"Business class is also 5-6x the cost of an Economy ticket. It is not 5-6x extra points for Business class ticket." This logic makes no sense. The points are a currency which could be used to get stuff you actually need, like a coles voucher for groceries… but instead you would be happy to pay for groceries with cash and use the points on something you don't need like business class?
Right now its 27630 points for a $100 eftpos card. And its 825,000 points to fly business class to Paris (cheapest in the next 2 weeks). The points for the airfare are equivalent of $2900 which could be spent on groceries and fuel. It would be $5000 if you got the David Jones cards which are currently on special. Could buy a nice 75 inch OLED for that.

"The experience with the lounge, the lie flat seats, the bedding, the food, the service etc is truly worth using points for." Completely disagree. Its just a few hours. Not worth the price.

          • @Stivo: It's clear based on your comments you have absolutely NO idea what you're talking about - you've completely ignored what I wrote about saver reward seats and thrown out some wild 825k figure that no one is paying. 825k got me 3-4 business class seats, not 1.

If you don't know how to search a simple flight, just go buy your $100 gift cards and be happy with it.

            • @jaygee: To me a holiday from work is to be scheduled for maximum enjoyment, not scheduled 12 months out in off season so you can pay more for a 12 hour flight. But you do you mate.

        • +1

A saving on something you wouldn't otherwise buy doesn't save you money - it still costs you money.

Business is of course generally the best value if you're calculating points/cent, but if you wouldn't pay that price you're not actually saving that amount.

      • Award upgrades, for us, is the best use of points. Have just requested upgrades for SIN-LHR and back. Comparisons for 1 way fares:

        Business Class $3,463 outright; or
        Business Class $871 + 76,300 points #

. # obviously upgrade not guaranteed, however we have a very high success rate by requesting early, and flying on the A380 which has most of the upper deck as business class

    • True churners will target both schemes. But agreed that Qantas is really screwing over their FF point holders.

My advice is just get into both programs and build up some balance in each - gives the most flexibility - pick your CC churn based on which has the best offer

    • I'm about to churn through a few credit cards myself and need to get back into the game. Looking at an overseas family holiday in 12-18 months time.

      • I’m in a similar position… but, I feel like incentives aren’t as good as they use to be (e.g., waiving first year fees, etc.).

    • Question about eligibility - With the QF cards, you are only eligible if you did not hold a card from the same bank in the past 12 months. Does this affect VA cards?

For example, if you previously held a Westpac Altitude QF credit card in the past 12 months, would you still be eligible for the Westpac Altitude VA credit card?

      • read the terms of the products you are cross comparing

  • Applied this for my mrs which i thought eligibled as she got the first Qts pts 5-6 years ago but not in the past 12 months, i perhaps confused with 'first' and 'within the past 12 months'.

I wanted to follow up with Finder (who run the promo) but couldnt find the contact as it may be my own confusion

    • +1

Against T&C but people still do it - you'll even find them for sale or trade on ozb classifieds

Safer to do with family if possible as that is allowed (both programs have family transfer options)

  • I didn't register as per step 2 (because there was no registration link + I was logged in already) and went straight to apply
Got approved last week and I was wondering why I didn't get an email from Qantas.
Figured I missed step 2 and retro-registered within a week….do you think I'd still get accepted?

  • Does anyone know how long it normally takes from receiving the first points from a new card to receive the bonus, does Qantas take the whole 12 weeks?
