        • Fair enough. All the electonic active safety systems are good and yes the VE doesn’t have any of that. Mine is a redline too. And I feel safer with those big Brembo brakes to stop me pretty fast. In reference to the size difference it was in relation to the commmeter saying my12 whatever. If they said 2012 small medium SUV than I’d probably agree. Even with all that safety tech in a new car I am still think iam safer in my V8 wagon from 2012

MG3 is too old and not worth buying. ZS may be acceptable if you really don't care about the powertrain, once you get to the Turbo ZST's you might as well just buy a Haval Jolion, much better car. HS PHEV for under 50k after cashback is certainly a good deal however, what other large PHEVs can you get in Australia for 45k? Essence is nicely specced too.

    • This is exactly how we ended up with a Haval Jolion. We wanted a replacement for a big 15 year old wagon but there was nothing affordable so had to go SUV. 2020-21 MG HS and Renault Koleos were on the shortlist but the Haval easily beats both for build quality/spec and driving experience and mid spec Lux was much newer (2022) for the same price.

Pay 20% more and get a Japanese Mitsubishi (ASX is not very expensive)

  • +1

Seems like there is a lot of hate for the MG. Is that towards the models which is on sale here only?

Would those who doesn't like MG also will say the same thing to the MG4 EV?

    Asking for my dad

    • +1

mg4 is probably the only good mg. its a very competent package.
but the base 51kv is too short of a range to be useful unless its a second go around car for picking up kids or going coles or something.

the mid tier isnt too bad but you are paying 50k for what is essentially a hatchback with maybe enough range for one long trip and back.

and if you get the long range one with enough actual battery capacity for any kind of long distance driving its 60k.

you might save some money on fuel and servicing but its a pretty tall ask. perhaps leasing could make it a bit more competitive if you can find good finance since you save on tax that way bringing its price down to "40k" equivalent. its got a lot of tech and features at the top of the range that it probably is pretty competitive if you can get cheap finance on a lease.

      • +1

450km is "too short of a range to be useful"?? Geez I get about 300km from a tank in my Mustang.

        • +1

Base model is only 350km rated but real world if you drive at 100km or 110km you are probably getting something similar the mustang or even slightly worse.
Also refilling a mustang every 300km is a lot easier and less time consuming then do so with an EV.

      • Most people do like 30km per day, 300km range is OK for a large chunk of people. Chargers do in fact exist for (very) long trips.

    • +1

Look at their outright rip off servicing fees.

Every 2 years it swaps between $296 and $907. When other EVs are usually much cheaper to service, Tesla has no required schedule. Just needs breaks, tyres and washer fluid pretty much.

      • How much is their service when those service does required?

  • +5

The mg3 is complete garbage. My former 2006 suzuki swift was a vastly nicer car to drive than the "brand new" mg3 i got via goget. Felt far less plastic inside to boot, and was faster. Likely still more reliable.

    • And that Swift would have had 2 airbags and no ESC.

      • +1

And I'd still trust it over the mg in a crash.

        • Depends what kind of accident you're in. If you get hit side on, I wouldn't want to be in a car without side and curtain airbags.

  • +5

In a moment of insanity a few years back I purchased a new MG3. Instantly regretted my decision as on the drive home. Sold it a few months later. Total cheap rubbish

    • +1

      You didn't test drive first?!

  • +2

Had to drive a mg when my car was in the shop as part of a hire car offer from my insurance company.

The worst thing I have ever driven. It's so bad I'm trying to explain.

Transmission 'surges' and lags. You put your foot down it takes about 3 seconds and then it pulls you forward. The brakes are sponge. The infotainment system feels like something from winamp back in the 90s.

    Seats feel like rocks.

Halogen lights? On a brand new car?

I get it, it's a brand new car, but you can surely do better by saving a bit more money guys.

    • +1

      Had to drive a mg

      Which model?

Transmission 'surges' and lags. You put your foot down it takes about 3 seconds and then it pulls you forward

Based in this comment, I’m assuming it’s a ZST with a DCT tranny? Dreadful box.

Halogen lights? On a brand new car?

You’d be amazed how many more expensive cars have Halogens as standard. Pretty sure base and second from base RAV4 has Halogens.

      • Also doesn't the base Prado still have halogens, and that's 60k+

  • Any cashback on the MG4?

    • +1

Huge tax breaks with a novated lease

Just chiming in to say, hire one for a couple of days even if you're considering the car to just be a cheap appliance.

Drove an MG HS Vibe for 5 days earlier this year as a hire car. Without a doubt worse car I have driven. It's the idea of a car with no execution. There is so much friction designed into the car that you're constantly reminded it's just a bad car even if you just want it to be an appliance.
The throttle mapping and gearbox control is bizarre so it's always surging or not being responsive at all, even with cruise on.
The centre console screen has everything tucked away in it with weird ass manual buttons to get to different sections but totally impossible to do easily.
The audio was so bad I thought someone had messed with the settings, but nope.

Next hire car had an ASX and it was night and day, ASX was just a car where stuff was as it should be.

    • Yep, definitely hire one first. MG ZS was our holiday car in cairns (even though we selected a Hyundai Kona when bookin).
Even with the discounts I would not buy these cars. My 2015 Lancer is a safer and better car overall, and that is based on a 2007 platform.

  • +1

They are giving these away almost every 3 weeks at my local RSL club.

I honestly think people are comparing them to the initial Hyundai excels which came out and broke out the small car segment.

But MG dealers are poorly supported by HQ.

Car supply chains are coming back and major brands are greedy, expect drops in the next 6 months as capital is becoming more expensive.

The grossly overvalued second hand car market will adjust.

Will you lose money on flipping an MG after 2 years? Yep.

Every other brand, yep. Besides select rare models.

Buy something you want to own until you don't within reason, not disposable motoring.

    • I think you'll find the 2nd hand market has already adjusted - hard.

      • Cars I'm looking at are still up compared to pre covid
        .

        • So are McNuggets

          It's called inflation.

The used car market is 30% or more down on COVID peaks

  • I have to say, it still amazes me that they can still make a complete car, and sell it for under $20k and still be profitable in 2023. Blows my mind, especially when factoring in wages, logistics, material, r&d.

Don't get me wrong, the quality of the car may vary, but still, being able to sell a product of that size & complexity whilst still being able to adhere to all safety and compliance standards is crazy.

This isn't just directed at MG, this is directed at all the $20k and below cars.

    • Wages? Lol.

    • +1

It's because they are made from old parts. Engine is an old GM engine. The MG3 is such an old model that it's not even sold in the Chinese market anymore. And yea wages, well its made in China so its probably next to nothing.

      • Even factoring that the parts are an old design and the low wages it's still crazy that their able to make them for the price they do. Those tight margins are part of the reason why car companies go bankrupt and get bailouts so often.

Should also note that wages in China are not like they use to be, for the past 10 years they have seen a wage growth of about 10%pa, which is much higher than australia (somewhere around 3%)

was choosing new (cheap) car recently, and took a couple MGs for a drive. they are very cumbersome in handling (ZST), and ZS EV was outright uncomfortable in handling

I chose Hyundai Venue instead, same price range and much better quality

not to mention that Hyundai was readily available, and mg had minimum 3m wait

    • EV was outright uncomfortable in handling

Can you elaborate what this means? I’m interested in one but haven’t test driven one yet

      • its response to "accelerate" pedal movement is counter intuitive, releasing it slows the car down straight away, and it's very sensitive. I found the car jerking back and forward during the test drive when I was driving not on cruise control.

this also means that turning on intersections is interesting and exciting as you control the car movement with "accelerate" pedal pretty much.

I would maybe take it and get used to it, but I wouldn't be comfortable my better half driving it

        • +2

To be fair a lot of electric vehicles slow down when the accelerator is released, some cars have the option to enable a feature that allows it to roll like a traditional car, can’t say if you can for the MG though.

          • @doobey1231: I drove other EVs before, and this one was extremely sensitive to accelerate pedal movement.

          • @doobey1231: You can change the regen rate in the MG, and yea, first time i drove a EV i felt the same, but its all like that.

Sh 1t, cheap CCP-made cars with pathetic resale values.

    Avoid.

  • +3

Had a rental MG ZST recently, possibly the Excite, it. was. horrible.
The LHD conversion to right was just so evidently cheap. The engine and transmission struggled to… to do anything.
These things only sell on the price.

    • Wow, I have a ZST Excite. I think it's terrific. Perhaps you had a non-turbo model? The turbo makes a big difference compared to the conventional 1.5.

  • Great value. Good enough for the average driver

    • +3

What exactly do define as an “average driver”?

I think the average driver would want reliability and safety.

  • +3

I lost my virginity in an MG

  • Why I couldn't find the price for the MG ZS EV Long Range MY23? Not in the OP, nor in their website.
Also from the list, anything that doesn't have "EV" in the name is not an EV right?

  • +9

I went to Tasmania for in the holidays, drove over 1600Km in a rental MG ZS.
the car was basically brand new with only 5500KM on the ODO.
This car has the worst driving feel I have ever experienced. Not smooth or stable at high speeds on highway. Constantly need to make minor readjustments on straight roads which leads to fatigue when driving for long periods. Engine is weak too, foot flat going up the hills could barely hit 90kmh. That's just the driving feel, there are tons of design choices that are strange or downright bad. Things like ODO placement, blinker stalk and even how remote locking works. Seriously, if you plan to buy a MG seriously test drive or better rent one first it and see if it is right for you.
If you just do a few runs around town each week it would be ok, but not for people doing serious road trips or 30 minute + each way daily work commutes.

    • Out of curiosity can you explain the upvote on a product that you are actively recommending against?

      • +3

It is technically a deal regardless of my personal opinion.

        • Guess we see upvotes differently, but fair enough

  • MG's sedan car looks quite nice. Is there any other sedans people recommend that are in that 25k-30k price range?

  • +1

I will buy a Suzuki rather a Chinese car lol
safety and quality are the key

  • does mg have any 7-seaters in australia?

  • Is it really worth buying new if it's cheap if you can buy 2nd hand and it be more reliable and have better tech for less?

  • Are these prices fixed or abe to negotiable further at MG Dealers?

  • +8

Downvote because these cars are the epitome of “the poor man pays twice”. Don’t get stung by a deal on a car that’s going to give you a lifetime worth of grief.

Seriously, not just saying this because China or whatever, these cars absolutely suck, they’re built as throwaway vehicles and I feel sincerely sorry for the next generation of p platers that are stuck with them.

    • paint absolutely sucks, I’ve seen 2020 models with clear coat peel, look at it the wrong way it starts to come off

    • interior is very pasticky feeling, no effort put into making harsh materials feel decent

    • handling is in the pits, even for their hatchbacks which you’d expect via basic geometry would handle ok, no dice. Rolls more than some SUVs I’ve been in

    • zero power in the engines, you can tell the gearboxes are doing all the heavy lifting

    • the gearboxes have lost any degree of sense whilst doing said heavy lifting. Downshifting at odd times and upshifting in stupid situations like up hill or around corners. Manual mode doesn’t help it either because the computer still takes over when it thinks it knows better than you

    • lastly and arguably most importantly the customer service and after sales support absolutely sucks ass. Wait times for repairs are blown out and subpar, you definitely get treated like a budget customer.

For anyone considering this brand I just want you to remember that this isn’t just a tv or a couch or whatever else, it’s more often than not your second most expensive asset. Find something that at least has a good standard of quality with a reputable name next to it.

    • Seconded.
It really is the early 90s Hyundai syndrome all over again!

  • +3

I drove one of the SUVs for a week.

I pity anyone that parted with money for one.

  • +4

I'd buy a 30yr old camry over one on of these any day

  • These are the shittest cars on the market.

    • And you know this, how?

      • I’ve driven them, multiple times.

        • Mustn't be that bad if you wanna keep driving them mate :P

          • +1

@montorola: Once a hire car, once a service car after a weather event for a few weeks.

            Both times, total shit.

  • What's MG brand like? Good reputation or quality? Been to Toyota before, was told need to probably wait a year to get new car-e.g entry hybrid car.
Looking for my first car in my life..

    • They’re total garbage. If you don’t have much money, go for it, but don’t fool yourself
