Made in China MG is way more better than made in UK crap.

        • Really? The remaining non-luxury cars that the UK produce are fine. Nissan Qashqai and Nissan Juke (we import these), Toyota Corolla and PSA vans.

      • So are Teslas…
And you find me a VW or Audi that doesn't turn to a electronical/mechanical turd after 10 years

MG is a cheap throw away car. use it when its new and after a few years its worth nothing. dont expect to get much for it when you go to sell it in the future. these cars have bugs in their software so get ready for trips to the dealer to do warranty claims during the time having it.

Ignorance would be the main reason.

    • +27

Yes, coming on 2 years in a ZST Excite. I had a relay go, they replaced it under warranty with a better one no question as it was in a service bulletin. Otherwise no issues, i bought the car purely as a "whitegoods mode of transport, not a love affair" due to the 7yr unlimited km warranty to tie me over 4-5 years and go electric.

I'm actually quite impressed with the car, great tech and safety features for the money and have no regrets. And before people say clueless yada yada, i've swapped engines on cars, owned classics, hotrods, tuned triple SU carbies, modded 4wd's etc and owned over probably 50 cars.

The MG3 however is pretty bare bones and probably lacking a bit in performance and features for me personally, but the price reflects that.

      • +16

I am a Japanese car man personally but the amount of clueless hatred towards MG/ Chinese/ Indian brands here in OZB is amazing (for example, people who's never driven an MG would still upvote a 'hate' comment just because the car is cheap and Chinese). I've driven an MG once and didn't like the car but when you put the price into the equation I couldn't complain really.

        • -4

every tradie who has ever owned any indian car/van has always had horrible things to say about them, and sworn off them

        • Yeah i also like Japanese vehicles. Besides the MG i have a Prado, and i've done a lot of work on it and it really is a dream to work on. The Toyota parts network is fantastic, the parts are generally high quality and things just fit like a glove. I've got the Toyota dealer software (TechStream) so i can do everything myself.

The MG is built to a price, and may not have the top shelf components like a car 2x it's price but imho it's designed and engineered quite well when you dig in to the mechanical and electrical system. But yes there's the clueless who's mates friend drove a bottom of the barrel MG3 who didn't like it, so therefore the whole brand is no good despite the ZST and HS/HS EV's being great given the 7yr warranty and very competitive pricing.

      • wot? Owned over 50 cars?

        • Yes, that's a conservative estimate. Back before the internet really kicked off, i used to buy cars in Sydney through the Trading Post newspaper mostly VB to VL Commodores but anything really from Ford Escort panel vans to Mitsubishi Scorpions, Pintaras etc.

Bring them home 3 hrs from Sydney and paint for sale and my ph number on the back window. Then just drive them around, to work, shopping etc and flip them for a profit. Some i just needed to detail, some i'd buy needing repairs and put new gearboxes, head gaskets etc. Last car i sold recently was an immaculate 500hp VK Commodore with TH400 and 9" diff, and my VE Redline to downsize to just 2 cars. So yeah the number of cars has racked up over the years.

I own - well, owned (I’ve just sold it) an MG ZS which I bought brand new, for $22,990, in January.

It was a fine car, as long as you go into it knowing what you’re getting. It has 84kw of power, a 4 speed auto, and weighs ~1.2T. It’s slow, and just from an “engineering” perspective, it’s all pretty old hat technology. Some may see this as a pro, rather than a con.

The pleather seats were great but very hot in summer. Despite what a lot of people are saying here, I had no issues with electronics or the infotainment system. And I’m in and out of the car 5-6 times a day, every day. Stereo was weirdly good for a cheap car.

Average fuel consumption was 8.5L/100km over ~15,000km.

I had a couple of build issues and unfortunately Motorama (my closest MG dealer) were incredibly reluctant to help, to the point that there were still problems at the time I sold the car. This was probably the main reason I sold the car. I can’t answer whether my experience would have been better had I gone to the MG dealership direct (on the other side of town to me), but I was left with very little confidence that the warranty actually stood for anything by the end of it.

I can understand why they’re such big sellers - both the ZS and the MG3… it’s a lot of motoring for what you pay. For a lot of prospective owners, they’re moving from a much older car. Are these the final word in safety? Probably not, but they’re a lot better than what most had before.

I ultimately sold a 9 month old car with just under 15,000km on it for a LOT less than I paid. Yes yes you always lose money on a new car, but 35% in such a short amount of time truly blew my mind. And this was privately. I sold it because of the build issues, and because I like “interesting” cars. Despite this being a very sensible choice for my current life situation, I just never bonded with it. It’s a very hard to quantify thing.

The MG4 seems to be a totally different beast.

Happy to answer questions if anyone has any, I’ve waffled on long enough 🤡

      • -1

Yes yes you always lose money on a new car, but 35% in such a short amount of time truly blew my mind

What did you pay for it new?

        • +4

          $22,990. Sold it for $15,500.

          • +1

@jackary: Looking at carsales I can’t find a 2023 or 2022 MG ZS for anything close to the price you sold. Closest is around 19k

            • +5

@cloudy: Some of the offers I got at trade were pretty insulting. What I got privately was about the best I was going to get. I think I know what you’re hinting at, but the price I got was realistic. The market is flooded with them, and now you can buy a new one for 21.5k. They may be listed for 19, but that’s not what they’re actually selling for. Look at how long some of them have been up for sale.

I promise, I’m not happy about it lol

              • +2

@jackary: I think thats the hidden cost with these type of cars. They seem cheap to buy but then it costs quite a bit of money when you sell it because of the higher depreciation.

              • +1

@jackary: Thanks for sharing, I appreciate it :)

            • +1

              @cloudy:

              Closest is around 19k

              Advertised price != selling price

            • +3

@cloudy: You only see the listings on carsales that haven't been sold because asking price is stupid. Fairly priced cars get snapped up quickly and you won't see those listings for too long.

              • +1

@dealhunter52: I dont disagree, but realistically, if 19.5k (the lowest price) is what i see i expect i can buy/sell it for 17k fairly easily.

Selling for 15.5k is about 4.5k under the average low price, that discount seems rather large IMHO

                • @cloudy:

what i see i expect i can buy/sell it for

Any item is only worth what someone else is willing to pay.

                • +2

@cloudy: Please excuse my belated reply!

I promise you, it wasn’t easy. Probably the most frustrating selling experience I’ve gone through. I had about 8 people come and look, and all low balled the living shit out of me. I need to clarify here, the car was immaculate.

The dealership I bought it from didn’t want it, the usual sites (carsales instant offer etc) offered around 14, I really, really did my legwork on this one, because I truly was in the same mindset as you on this - how can an almost brand new car be worth that much less such a short time later?

If I really held out, maybe I would’ve gotten 16… but after wasting weekend after weekend with tyre kickers, I’d just had enough. Probably not on carsales, but there’s a couple of MY22 ZS models in my area on FB marketplace for similar money to what I sold for. It’s an unknown quantity to a lot of people, and that’s reflected in the resale value.

Where did you get the stat from? According to this, it is Tesla.

      • By light cars. Saw it on poster at stealership. Talking about MG3

        • Probably because the rental car companies have bought a whole heap because they are cheap. Wait until they all crap themselves prematurely and the rental car companies will go back to Toyota or Mitsubishis.

The ASX was a very popular car too, but probably predominantly bought by rental car companies.

They are sold for the $ they are worth. I dont know why people want to compare them to cars not remotely on the same price range.

MG did get bought out by China, but its for better or worse from SAIC - which is one of the two VW partners in China (SAIC Volkswagen), they arent just some rando no name that popped up from nowhere.

I definitely wouldnt hold it up to anywhere the standard old MGs might have had, but I also dont think its any lesser quality than low end Korean and Indian makers - if anything I trust them more - they did inherit/stole/bought/learnt quite a bit of stuff from VW during their 30 year long and ongoing joint venture, after all.

Besides, 7 year free warranty and all that? Yeah for your budget minded buyer this is a good deal.

    • +2

Yeah exactly, the old MG was getting passed around like a red headed step child and nobody wanted it. They literally begged SAIC to buy the company, they did and bought it back from ruins and kept the UK plant and jobs for about a decade. Sure it's not the racing pedigree of the olden day MG but they have breathed life back in to an otherwise dead brand.

  • +7

I’ve got the ZS EV and it’s a great car to drive. Smooth and powerful. The build quality is first rate, regardless of what the naysayers are banging on about. The minor issues I’ve had with it were sorted quickly by the dealership and I couldn’t be happier. I’ve had less issues with this than I’ve had with any new car, and I’ve had some expensive ones.

7 year warranty will take care of anything that may go wrong and I have every faith in the dealership after the couple of dealings I’ve had with them.

I’ve had some people say that they’ll be worth nothing in five years because it’ll need a new battery. I expect the battery will last in excess of 15 years. I’d be more concerned buying a petrol car and that being worthless in five years when petrol is even dearer and being phased out.

    • -4

15 years for a battery um ok.

Yeah the uptake of EVs is still glacial and the resources needed to say make enough EVs is finite. Plus to get the millions of petrol cars off the roads at the current uptake, is going to take years and years and years. So no they won't be worthless not for a long time.

    • +2

      I have every faith
      build quality is first rate

Very funny. I assume you also have the same confidence in the excellent engineering and QA coming out of aliexpress and temu purchases.

    • +1

      Smooth and powerful.

You sure about the powerful bit?

      • -1

Have you driven a ZS EV? It is fast and powerful. Very much so and I’m quite sure. The only thing stopping it going faster is the wheels spinning if you floor it, even at 40km/h.

    • If you think its first rate you drove nothing else. Including oh….haval.

  • +9

I’d just cough up extra money and get a Kia Picanto tbh

Shockingly good car. Hired one via goget the other day just to check it out. Suspension is lovely.

  • +8

Driving the MG ZS for a road trip around Tasmania; it does the job but would definitely not recommend it as a daily drive. Glad I don't own one, for the price I'd rather look at used cars…

    • +2

Why would you not recommend it as a daily driver. Could you please elaborate your experience.

  • +3

For what it's worth, I was a passenger in an MG ZS a few days ago overseas ('Grab' rideshare). I saw the odometer reading was 205,000km, and it was still driving very smoothly. I reckon this is a good deal.

    • Yeah, but how much work had been done to it to get there?

      • +1

Fair point, but frankly I found it heartening it got there at all!
This was Thailand, so not sure how much money people put into car maintenance.

    • +4

Were you in the front passenger seat?

  • +7

gosh. spent 6 days driving with it around cairns after rental car pushed to highly recommend it to us. underpowered, weird gear changes, felt cheap, just an unpleasant driving experience!!!

    • +1

I hired an MG HS on a trip. Absolutely loved it. So, there you go, everyone's different.

  • +7

    horrible cars

  • +2

A MY22 MG is probably safer than a MY12 whatever small car

    • -2

I would definitely feel safer in my 2012 VE SSV Commodore wagon than any 2022 MG

      • +1

Ok i have an MG ZST, i owned a 2012 VE SSV Redline for 10 years which i bought new. I've also been an accredited road crash rescue operator since the late 90's and lost count of the people i've extricated from wrecks.

I feel safer driving the MG with the 360 degree cameras, blind spot detection, adaptive cruise, forward collision warning, lane assist, rear cross traffic alert, auto emergency braking, speed sign assist. So MG for the win in minimizing the chance of accident. But if an accident were to occur, i'd rather be in the VE due to the better air bags, good seat belt pre-tensioners, ride down steering column and break away pedal system to prevent lower leg injury. This is a major issue people aren't aware of, we even have dedicated pedal cutters to free lower legs in no break away pedals.

So yeah, that's just my thoughts on this and it's comparing a large sedan to a small/mid size.
