Also Generally woolies do 20x everyday rewards points on gift cards every so often, so you get money to spend at woolies that’s what some ozbargainers do to offset the price of the product, technically you not getting the product cheaper just getting everyday rewards points to buy food at woolies

      • Damn, too late for me then.

anybody spent theirs yet? I bought for iPhone 15 but didn't end up getting - based on recent heating issues might get a 14 pro - any deals out there?

I just can’t bear to spend any money on non USB C Apple accessories anymore

    • I wonder if the EU law changes will make Apple update it to USB C soon. And maybe even make it backlit while they at it.

      • They're no longer backlit?!

        • +1

Were the external keyboards ever? The inbuilt Mac ones still are. Guessing the drain on battery life made backlit for external keyboard not worth the bother in Apple's opinion.

          • @AustriaBargain: Still it should be there as an option.

            • @MA87033: Yeah, I always leave it on on my MacBooks. But my iPad Magic Keyboard isn't backlit and I do fine. I think I mostly just like how cool it looks, I touch type anyway.

@AustriaBargain: My iPad Magic Keyboard has backlight. It’s just annoying to activate it.

                • +3

@settings: Hooooly shit, it is backlit. I've owned it for years and I never knew. Thanks buddy. This helps explain why it was 400 odd dollars…

It's unlikely EU will enforce that because PCs are still heavy on USB-A keyboards.

The Logitech MX Keys are just as good, if not better and much cheaper than the Apple keyboards. And work well with macs. And has backlight.

The only thing missing is touchId.

Looks like magic rip-off. I still use the Logitec G110 gamer keyboards (2x $38. I'm not gamer but so many magic functions ;)

There is Apple tax for sure, but please compare it to a wireless bluetooth based keyboard (to be fair).

Logitech MX keys for 1/2 price & better functinality:
Ergonomic design with comfortable key travel
        Backlight with multiple brightness levels
Compatible with multiple 3x devices simultaneously (Windows, macOS, Android, iOS)
        USB Dongle for non-BT devices
Much more customisation & drag/drop across systems

Genuine question: Why would you get one of these over say the Logitech MX Keys which seems to be pretty similar for much less money?

    • TouchID makes life easier - signing in etc. Although Apple Watch to unlock is also useful if you don't have one of these keyboards for logging into a Mac.

M1+ devices won't connect to external bluetooth devices until after login. So if you use the Logitech MX keys - you also need to waste a usb port on the wireless adaptor that comes with.

      • MX works over Bluetooth.

        • +1

I thought it was more about M1+ devices won't connect to external bluetooth devices until after login.

Unfortunately, I just tested it with an el cheapo bluetooth keyboard. My Apple Silicon based Mac Mini works fine with that keyboard (I can use it to login) and my bluetooth mouse (Logitech) most certainly works before login as well.

So, I am unclear about that statement. Apple "Magic" keyboards are bluetooth based as well.

          • @netsurfer: Yup, my Keychron Q1 Pro works fine upon first boot on my M1 13 Pro laptop no issues. Connects straight away.

@ReaperX22: It's actually to do with if you have FileVault turned on or not.

If you have FileVault on - it won't allow the Logitech background items to load - so you need to use the Unifying Receiver or have it plugged in on startup.

If you have FileVault off - no problems.

              • @mwalexander: Thanks for this. It is more secure to use FileVault.

Does that also apply to el cheapo Bluetooth keyboard (not needing special app)? The Mac that I have FileVault, I don't want to reboot now (doing work, so don't want to reboot yet), but I seem to recall Bluetooth mouse (a cheaper Logitech one without support for those fancy apps) seems to work fine before login. That Mac is a Macbook Pro so I normally just use the included laptop.

    • it makes sense if youre using the apple ecosystem. they have a command function whereas the logitech keyboard has a function key. its also familiarity. I havent see that board but i would imagine that its similar to what is available on the macbook pro which to a handful of people has nice feedback and sensation with typing and would prefer to stick with something that they are comfortable with

      • I use the old wired aluminium one on my PC and it's brilliant, best keyboard I ever owned. The command key automatically becomes the windows key and option key becomes alt, there's nothing special about it otherwise. You can use any PC keyboard on a Mac and those keys likewise will work as their native Mac keys. When my wired one dies I'll buy one of these.

        • You can even remap keyboards natively in System Preferences to whatever you are comfortable with - I remap a Razer keyboard so the key positions match what I am used to on an Apple Keyboard.

    • I have a Mac mini and I use the MX Keys Mini and I've been thinking of getting the Magic Keyboard simply for the Touch ID… but there's so many downsides that I haven't jumped at it.
Pros for Apple Magic Keyboard (with Touch ID) is really just Touch ID… I do have an Apple Watch and I can prompt on my watch but it's not as fast and seamless and plus I Touch ID also allows for quick switching of user profiles. I plan to use this with my son but really it's more a convenience than an exclusive feature.

Pros for MX Keys (Mini) is backlit keys, can pair via USB or buetooth, allows for remembering 3 devices and easy switching (which is handy when I'm using it with my iPad away from the Mac mini).

Ideally I would love it if Apple offered some program to allow third party to include Touch ID… I think the ideal keyboard would be Logitech MX Keys Mini with Touch ID.

    • TouchID (I’ve found Watch unlock to be not very reliable, plus I often don’t wear my Watch at home).

I’ve had some ordinary experiences with Logitech gear too.

And backlit keys don’t matter to me, I don’t like working in the dark.

Plus, it’s just what I’m used to and the price difference doesn’t bother me.

    is this good for tetris

    • +1

It is okay for hypertapping but it might be too big for rolling

      • for modern tetris it’s more about rolling, latency and endurance you’re hammering 6 keys repeatedly lol

        https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qHzjx30Go9E

if you going that fast it’s 300 keypresses every 15 seconds

  • I love my black Magic Keyboard. It has the perfect amount of key travel and is nice and quiet. I work in an office full of PCs (I'm the only Mac), and the sound of people typing on their noisy keyboards drives me nuts.

  • 228 for a keyboard.. can't believe people pay that

    • Yea, that's insane. $100 or so is the most I will pay for a mechnical keyboard, I don't think this Apple keyboard is even mechanical. $228 for a membrane keyboard, no wonder inflation is out of control.

      • The build quality, comfort and quietness are worth the price for me - and I hate mechanical keyboards. I’m not sure what the inflation comment has to do with anything, they’ve been this price or more long before inflation started going out of control.

        • The inflation comment is related to companies increasing their prices not because of the increased costs of production, but because they can. They are trying to gauge consumer's propensity to spend and price their products up to it. Both Apple and Samsung and other leaving firms do it. The price of flagship products is getting very out of hand, eg iPhone 15 Pro Max fully speced out is nearly $3k, that's ludicrous.

I love mechanical keyboards and will not use a membrane one if I can avoid it. I take my own 65% mechanical keyboard to the office.

For me personally, $200+ is too much to spend on a keyboard.

          • @techlead: But it's irrelevant in this case because they haven't increased their price - this has always been the price.

  • Only Apple users would convince themselves this is a bargain.
