  • Good deal.

NVMe SSD prices have gone down a lot. I remember a few years ago paying a lot more than this for a WD Black NVMe 250GB SSD. This is four times the size and faster than what i had.

I hope 2TB NVMe SSD becomes the norm.

  • I think Lexar NM790 $65 is a better deal

    • From where?

      • Yeah don't worry i found it myself.

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/792769

But unfortunately right now if you don't live in a metro city then you get slugged with a $15 delivery charge instead of the metro area $5 delivery. It may say $65 delivered in the deal thread title but i can tell you that it's quoting me a delivery charge. The free delivery must have since ended.

Even then with the $5 delivery metro city charge that makes it $70 delivered which is only a few dollars less than this. Unless you can do an in store pickup.

One advantage from this WD Black SSD deal however when buying from Amazon is that you get good parcel delivery support and returns. And would WD be a better brand than Lexar when it comes to SSD?.

        • NM790 1TB is faster with 7400MB/s read, 6500MB/s write

        • Try checking out with it. I brought one from them a few weeks ago (4tb)
There was shipping charge, but when i checkout (like last page before paying) it shows shipping removed.

Lexar is a good brand as well just not so famous in SSD market, they are quite famous when it comes to make SD cards.

  • How much of a difference does a high performance vs a low performance nvme ssd really make for gaming?

    • +1

For games, there is not much overall difference other than perhaps a second or 2 during large loading screens. The primary thing to factor in when getting a new SSD is that you ideally want this to last the lifetime of your PC so investing an extra $10-15 to get a higher grade / reputable brand is -always- worth it when it comes to buying an SSD.

Saving $10 now to get a brand that uses lower quality chips or has less quality control will only give you a higher chance of having to go through the frustration of having a dead SSD sooner than later, losing all the data on it and having to replace the SSD / re-install everything onto it.

For a part that you only should ever need to buy once, get the next one up.

      • Thanks for the response, I've heard a lot of conflicting reports of the tangible effect on gaming but buying a better model now as a more secure investment sounds good to me!

  • I say this as someone that does not game too much, 1TB fills up very very quickly so consider this when buying, especially if you only have 1 m2 slot.

    • I say this as someone who games pretty often

Finish what you are playing, delete what you're not. It can be redownloaded.

      • +1

That's you assuming that every one has access to fast NBN (also with unlimited downloads) which not every one does.

So tell that to some one stuck on slow FTTN. It takes hours and hours to redownload a game. At say a download speed of 3MB/s on FTTN a 100GB game can take over 9 hours to download.

Not every one is able to get a Gigabit NBN connection or even 100Mbit. What about those with monthly download quota limits. For them simply deleting large games and redownloading is just not practical. You could be waiting days for your games to redownload. And those on fixed download quotas will just run out of download quota.

    • Yes especially with games like Starfield. That game takes up almost 140GB of storage space. That's already over 1/10th of the 1TB space filled up already just by one game.

  • good time to buy before rising dram prices are reflected in ssds

  • This is amazing, I wonder how the 2nd and 3rd tier brands are going to sustain themselves when this quality of product is basically at giveaway pricing.

  • the 2tb in this listing is also not a bad price, currently divided between it, p5 plus and nm790 for productivity
