  • Also 2 units remaining of the WD Blue SA510 2TB M.2 SATA drive for $128.55
Excellent upgrade for older laptops with the older M.2 SATA slot

  • What is the highest TBW on an SSD?

    • +3

Intel Optane SSD DC P5800X 1.6TB: TBW: 292 PB (292,000 TB). $5,650 AUD.

      • You made it up 😂

        • Buy me one and I'll prove it.

  • Are these good? I can't tell if these controllers are decent. I'm looking for a 2TB NVME ,thinking of a Samsung 980/990 pro but maybe that's an overkill?

    • Would like to know as well, in the market for a 2tb NVME

    • NVM just researched, this is a good mid range ssd - https://ssd.borecraft.com/SSD_Buying_Guide.png

      • +3

Not true, the one marked mid-range is Crucial P5(non-plus). P5 Plus is high-end NVME

        • aah my bad! You are right.

    • I would say if you want to step up, P41 is available for 188 on amazon.

Mid range Lexar NM790 is around 129.

  • Awesome, have been waiting for a deal on a decent 2TB NVME, reviews look like it stacks up pretty well.

  • Would this work ok for PS5, would also need a heatsink ?

    • update - bought this, installed in PS5, works fine.

Does NOT come with a heatsink, so I bought that seperately ~$16 Amazon

  • Samsung 980 worth the extra $40?

  • The Samsung 990s are on sale as well. Not sure how they rate tho

  • i am looking at potentially upgrading the 1TB WD SN570 in my Lenovo IdeaPad 5 Pro (originally came with 500Gb WD SN770, and on paper the laptop take upto 1TB but I am going to try 2Tb), so should i jump onto this deal or the Lexar NM790 deal is better ? The IdeaPad 5 Pro only is gen 3 but prefer gen 4 so i can re-use the SSD if get new machine in the future. Thank you in advance for any guidance.

    • +1

If you have the spare dollars, I've gone for the Crucial. The major difference is the NM790 is DRAM-less, so sustained write performance probably isn't going to be as good. Although apparently its able to use system memory as a cache, I'm absolutely not an expert but as far as I know DRAM > no DRAM.

Get the SK Hynix Gold P31 2TB for $164

Best drive for laptops combining speed and power/heat efficiency

The IdeaPad 5 Pro only is gen 3 but prefer gen 4 so i can re-use the SSD if get new machine in the future.

Do not worry about the buying Gen 4 now for a future laptop - by the time you upgrade, Gen 5 will be mainstream and Gen 4 drives will be cheap

    • +1

Right now, NM790 2TB is probably the cheapest 2TB TLC SSD. It's unfortunate the previously cheapest one is now QLC (was TLC & $109).

The main reason for getting P5 Plus is Amazon's warranty service.

      I might test NM790 1TB on PCIe gen 3.

    • Thank you all for the input, place an order for the Hynix, hope my laptop can take the 2Tb.

  • +1

Why would anyone get this from Amazon UK and not the NM790 for much less from BPCtech? DRAM?

    • I was also going to ask how it compares, but you beat me to it!

    • Warranty service and process is likely better with Amazon AU in the long run.

      P5 Plus Pros:

      • DRAM. Better for server or high random read / write queue depth usage.
      • Better firmware support

      NM790 Pros:

      • Faster in general, non heavy usage (non server type).
      • Cheaper.

      Unknown bits:

      • NM790's YMTC Xtacking 3 NAND type, for now, we assume the old data read issue found in Xtacking 2 is fixed. Otherwise….
      • NAND swap in the newer or future batches?
