Telstra $30 Starter Pre-Paid Sim Pack for $10 Save $20 at COLES Supermarkets

670

It's on again. Telstra's usual discounting deal to increase market share in the prepaid market.
Best option by far is to pick the Encore Plus Plan. This time, sim cards will be available from Coles Supermarkets, not Coles Mobile. FTW!

  • Can I use this SIM to load data-only and use with my Huawei E173 USB modem ?
If so, which plan should I activate ?

    • yes. ring telstra to change to ipad data plan which will give you 3 GIG.

      • Oo so you you don't have to have an ipad to use the 3GB data plan?

        • yes. just tell them you have an ipad and it will still work. just need to know the settings for your pocket wifi. also probably can't check usage as well, unless you have sim ipad

      • So I take it you ring them up to activate it as an iPad

I just activated mine and in the agreement they pretty much said I had to use it in the iPad :/

Why would it matter whether or not if I use it in the iPad or not :S Data is Data as far as I'm aware :S

  • This deal has already been mentioned in: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/80571

    • +7

Yes it has already been mentioned but in very very small writing where no one is going to notice it. I hang out for this bargain (and other Ozbargainers also) and stock up on like 10 of these babies each time they go on sale. I rip through the data while I'm on the train in Melbourne. Floptus and Vodafail don't cut it on my train line in Melbourne.

What's the best way to use multiple start up packs without changing my number? Say 10 packs for 10 months?

    • +3

$2 optus or vodafone sim, port out and back in, rinse and repeat

      • +1

not a bad idea but you'll get ~2 days of downtime (1 to vodafone and another back to telstra) and porting back to telstra you always need to do it over the phone (instead of online)…

        • This is where two phones come in handy. Use 1 phone for your regular SIM and the other to surf the internet/calls with the bonus data/call credit.

    • I keep one Sim as "Simplicity" plan and transfer credits via CREDITME2U. So each month, I activate a new sim and use up all the bonus data and calls and transfer balance of credits to the other SIM which is my main number. Or you could just port in and out the numbers but that costs $2 each time.

      • On what offer do you activate sims? Do you carry two phones, one for bonuses and one for credits?

        • +1

Al ways activate on encore plus. Change to simplicity once bonus credits expire for better calling rates :)

      • That's a great idea! I recently changed from postpaid to prepaid Telstra after my iPhone 4 plan expired in August and was wondering what's the cheapest way to recharge each month. Could you please elaborate on the bonus data/calls part? I've got a spare old Sony Ericsson K610i so can use that as a second phone. Thanks!

      • That doesn't make sense…

If you activate as simplicity, and then transfer it, then the simplicity cant do anything. Would have thought simplicity was the worst of the options…. am i missing something here?

        • +1

You activate the number you want to keep as main on the long life plan, the $30 gives you 6 months expiry. You immediately change it to the simplicity plan here calls and SMS are significantly cheaper.

On the other new rubbish sims, you activate as cap encore, $30 gives $220 funny money and 400mb data. The funny money can also be used or data at $2/mb

You credit me2u the $30 real money to the main sim card that is on simplicity which now gives the credit 6months expiry (or the expiry date of whatever this main sim card has).

Normal encore prepaid has only 30day expiry

        • You activate the number you want to keep as main on the long life plan, the $30 gives you 6 months expiry. You immediately change it to the simplicity plan here calls and SMS are significantly cheaper.

When you change the prepaid from Long Life to Simplicity, why doesn't the expiration drop to 60 days?

If I bought 11 cards for $110, would I have $300 credit at Simplicity rates with a 6 month Long Life expiration?

This seems like the best prepaid deal out there, if it works. I'm reading the whirlpool forums but I still don't quite understand why this works. It seems Telstra would be aware of this loophole and would be trying to plug it.

        • Can you do this cycle after 6 months? Can you extend the expiry of the creditme2u for another 6 months? what will you do after 6 months if you have 10 more sim packs unopened?

The reason I ask is because I only use this for mobile data for occasional use for work.
          Thanks

        • +1

Long life plan is the worse rate. I strongly advise against it. Lasts 6 months but once you make 1 call, it's all over. I've tried heaps of combos but the best to start on is encore plus. Once yourbonuses expire, switch to simplicity for cheaper call rates and but the net and calling packs.

        • you activate as the long life plan to get 6 months expiry on $30, then you immediately change to encore. Please read properly

if you want to repeat the cycle after 6 months, either change your main sim to long life and recharge $30 to get 6 months expiry again, then change back to simplicity, or if you want to use the $10 sim then port out to $2 sim from optus/vodafone then back in on the long life plan, change to simplicity, etc

        • I would recommend if you decide to to this, to purchase the $10 or $20 data pack every month (200mb and 500mb? respectively) as the PAYG data rates are quite high

        • then you immediately change to encore. <—- Will you get the bonus if you do this?

        • Peter05, In your first post you say to change to Simplicity and then in this one you say change to Encore. I am confused. Once you get the 6 month expiry can you change to whatever you want and still retain the 6 month expiry as asked a few posts up?

        • +3

So confused.. I feel like I am in Calculus class again

        • +11

          Apologies, this is the sequence

Sign up main sim card on LongLife activating with $30 => REASON, 6 months credit expiry for the $30 + any CreditMe2U transfers. This 6 month expiry date is STATIC, ie activate today, expires on 26/3/2013, even if you creditme2u

Change this same MAIN sim card to Simplicty => REASON, cheaper calls rates, retain same expiry date of previous recharge

Activate further sim cards on ENCORE, using creditme2u to the MAIN sim card => REASON, encore will allow you to use this new sim card with no credit as a $30 recharge gives $30 real money and $220 funny money + 400mb data. Send the $30 to main sim, and you still have $220+400mb, PLUS free calls/texts between 6PM and 6AM each night. The time depends on where you are, it's ALWAYS 6pm to 6am no matter time zone

Each creditme2u costs 25c so you won't be able to transfer full $30, also you can only do $10/day online without calling telstra

Help me vote down the other reply since i can't edit it as it's been replied to :)

        • Any chance of changing to Simplicity once having made a call using the Long Life?

        • that 25c is annoying, breaks the round number. also, whats the limit if you did it on the phone #100# number instead?

        • DON'T ACTIVE ON SIMPLICITY. You can change plans, I think it's once a month or something. For myself, Encore Plus is the best one to activate on and then I switch to Simplicity once the bonus data/calls/texts run out :)

        • Wait is this Whirlpool?

        • @ djcharleik are you saying to activate main sim on encore then change to simplicity (when credit runs out)?

And activate all other sims on encore and creditme2u to main sim?

    • please delete….

  • Is it possible to use this sim, get it cut and put into my iPhone 5 to access 4G?

    • Good luck with that. Not easy to cut to nano sim size.

    • +2

Buy the Sim, get it activated, walk to a Telstra store and ask them to swap it for a nano Sim.

    • +2

Yes. I made two nanos out of micros. Had no problem at all.

    • +1

No point. Telstra will swap you for free anyway if you are an existing customer. Just activate it then walk into a store and ask for a nano sim, they should just hand it straight over.

      • Never seems that simple for me. They always misunderstand, then they try to sell me something, and then after explaining for 15 minutes they say "oh no we can't just give you a free SIM LOLLLOL"

…Walk to the next Telstra shop and try again

  • Dupe

  • Remember, if youre using it for your ipad, you get 3GB of data for the first month.

  • I dont understand how these prepaid sims work. Can I buy them now while they are on special and start using them later in the year?

    • +3

Yup I still got some purchased in last promotion which is valid for activation until Mar 2015.

      • can i keep my number if i switch to a new sim every month?

        • +1

If you want to do this, you would need to switch to some other company and then switch back… every month.

  • I can't find the details of this special.. is it in the catalogue?

  • Hi guys, i am new to this forum and i am very lost and don't know anything about pre paid sim at all. Can someone quide me in plain english please. My Telstra contract (iphone4)is ending in Jan 2013. I would like to keep my number and still able to use internet sometimes. So with this great deal with pre paid sim. What do i need to do? to make the most of this bargin deal? thank you in advance

    • see peter05's post above.

  • +1

It all sounds so complicated. I'm thinking of getting a sim card (and number) for my old phone for my 14 year old daughter to use. Good idea?

  • Surely the iPhone 5 isn't the only 4G phone out there…

  • Can I port my existing Telstra prepaid number to these ones?

    • +1

No. You will not be able to.

      • Ok thanks for that.

With CREDITME2U, the credit that you receive, can you use that to recharge for an encore cap?

        • +1

No, because to get the bonuses associated with cap encore, you need to recharge a minimum of $30 an the maximum transfer you can creditme2u is $10. Apparently some people have had luck calling Telstra to transfer up to $20 but that's still not enough to activate encore bonuses. You can try but it's unlikely to work

      • Can I port my existing Telstra prepaid number to these ones?

No. You will not be able to.

But you CAN activate it and transfer the credit to your existing phone using credit me2u.

    • Port it out to Optus $2 sim starter pack and then port it back :) Problem fixed.

  • +1

    2 things… i thought you could only transfer max $10 a day + 25c fee creditme2u? (sounds like a painful process)

And if this is the case does this mean you only get $10 worth of calls/data? i want to take adavantage of the deal 99% for data and maybe the occasional phone call but just can't get my head around all of this..

im hoping it works like this: activate as a data recharge (3gb), then creditme2u $10= 1gb of data??

    • +1

It's all a painful process and it depends how far you want to go to save money, but this is ozbargains :D

the 3GB deal is only for ipads and I haven't tried it myself but the "rate" that they give you is what determines how much data you have, ie if they charge you 1c/mb then if you transfer $10 over then you will receive 1GB. But this presumption is made that your credit has not expired, the reason is because I think the rate will revert to a crap one once your credit expires. So if you transfer every 13-14 days after that, you should technically retain the same rate of 1c/mb

The ipad plan doesn't give you calls and i think the rates are terrible, although you can use VOIP but that's another story :D

      • +1

the 3GB is a special for the first month only. Hence, its best to buy mulitple cards and register a new one each month. Yeh, its a pain, but definitely cheaper than any plan on the market

        • Are you sure about this? I activated iPad sims many years Ago and it was done as $30 credit at a particular rate. The above doesn't work if they actually give you a 3gb data pack

They give you data packs on the sim cards you get with modems etc with specified expiry dates

    • It's not a painful process at all. During the 30 day period, I transfer all the normal money to my normal SIM and hey presto, I have more than 30 days of use of the phone per month at just $10 a month. Even less if you have a discounted Coles / Woolies Gift card 5% extra discount :)

  • Actually i don't know where im getting 3gb from.. says on the telsta website you only get 700mb for a $30 rechage?! thats terrible..

  • I have been with Optus for 14 years and have never had a problem with them but now am ready to take the next step I'll be getting one after work tonight and test it out for a month to see how it all goes

  • does coles have these in stock? when to coles broadway and bilo as well they didnt have any.

    • ive found the 3 coles stores sydney (city) I went to dont even carry this product - they only have the $2 telstra starter kit

  • sold out @ Chemside…

  • This can also be used for MOG subscriptions, by buying bigpondmusic vouchers via your credit…

  • None at Coles/Manuka. They said they never received any.

  • +3

i think staff would have bought it all…

  • +1

Coles Booragoon didn't have any, do you think Woolworths would price match it?

    • Keep looking. I find that trying to get in on the first day the sims are on sale works. Also try obscure stores that are not as popular. And no, I don't think Woolies will match it. You can just wait another few weeks and Woolies will probably have the same promo too. Telstra like to rotate the specials around so that if you don't change your shopping habits and keep buying at the same supermarket, you can end up paying $30 instead of $10. Why make it easier for price sensitive people eh?

  • +2

Went to 3 Coles stores and non of them had it :-(

    Did anyone have any luck?

    • -1

I bought 10 of these at Northland VIC store today just after work. I'm not sure why people are having a hard time finding them.

      • +9

I bought 10 of these at Northland VIC store today just after work. I'm not sure why people are having a hard time finding them.

        ^^^^^That's why^^^^^^^

        • I was down to like 3 sim cards left. I won't buy as many next time they are on sale, I can promise you that! :)

  • +1

I asked for 5 @ Coles Earlwood. They only had 4. Not bad

  • +1

Coles St Kilda ran out of stock but I was able to raincheck for 2 of them - so long as I go in and pick up within next 30 days they will still honour price at $10. Just need to show the catalogue and raincheck receipt.

  • just a thought.. do officeworks sell these?? if so, price-match +5%!

    • I'm wondering the same thing

  • Do these work on Next G ??
Yes, I do have a Next G capable phone.

  • Thanks OP. bought 2.

  • Based on a quick read, particularly peter05's posts, this sounds perfect for my 13 year old's phone which should be reasonably low usage and therefore - I am guessing - need only cost $12 a month ($10 Telstra + $2 optus or vodafone sim) for hopefully 10 months or more. He would have no trouble with 1-2 days a month downtime to preserve his number (its 100% downtime at the moment because I haven't got my head around the offers).

What is the easiest way to get 10 packs?

(Sounds great for the iPads too!)

  • Anyone know if this can be made into a long life plan? I'm putting it on a second phone which is rarely used.

    • Yes, you specify the plan you want when you activate.

  • Can you go from Telstra Postpaid to this offer and keep same number? Or do you need to use the double port method described and go to Optus first?

  • Gungahlin ACT had some as I brought one. You will have go to the new mobile area to buy them

  • Coles at Marion Shopping Centre, Adelaide had stock. Had to request the lady at the mobiles section and she wasn't aware of the offer, but checked and it scanned at 10$.

  • Thanks everyone for this. I have placed it into a spare phone, chosen the long life plan, and then switched to simplicity plan so I still get the long expiry, plus better rates.

  • Available at Coles Northland today.

  • I called a few stores

    QLD

    Forest Lake - None
    Inala - Didn't receive any
Browns Plains - A few left

    NSW

    Baulkham Hills - None
    Castle Hill - None
North Parramatta - Will only sell a max of 2
