They may get an upgrade alongside the 13" mbp in october

Good deal, Hope for a group deal on the Air 13"

    • Me toooooo!

This one has best price-benefit efficiency.

    • I don't think they can do a 13" cheaply. As soon as the price is over $1000, we'll have to be GST on it and then it won't be much of a bargain. Assuming that they are a overseas company.

If they price it at $999, there will be alot of unhappy people who bought the 11" for the same price.

    • you can get a 13" fhd ips zenbook prime for less than 999 delivered from bhvideo

    This Package Including:

    • 45W MagSafe 2 Power Adapter (US Plug)
    • AC wall plug (UK Plug)
    • Power Cord (UK Plug)
    • Free Gift: AU Plug Charger Adapter

Does this mean it's not Australian stock and they're giving buyers a plug adpater? That's how it reads to me.

    • yep that looks about right, not aussie stock for sure!

Judging the seller info, their location is Hong Kong, which also coincides with the hk in their name - cc-electronicshk.

Off-topic, I know. But every time I see your account picture, I instantly read your text as if it written by a cynical, sarcastic duck. It makes me want to make an animated sitcom of a cynical duck's life on the internet. I'd probably call it "Cynical Internet Duck". I'd watch that.

        • +13

Why not call it: "Who gives a duck?"

        • -3

Same here I read it as quack quack quack (blah blah blah)

Finally something other than cats :)

          Sounds like a new meme.

The only way to get any -significant- discount on Apple gear is to "settle"…
    take old, non-AU stock.

Forget Moore's Law with Apple, especially in AU, folks.

This is only -one- of our reasons for -not- joining the Apple "herd"… ;-)

PS About $1,146 at Dick Smith (if we have model matched right)

What does the doubling of transistors have to do with Apple computers in Australia?

  • Looks like it's $1099 on the Apple site..
    Whoops.. US site

I see what you did there

using the 2011 model at the moment for work……painfully slow.

    • +2

      Probably too much pron

    • oooh, I thought the Sandy Bridge models are quite good(for a mac at least)not sure about windows….

  • +1

I have this same model and paid $1125 at HN after a 10% discount. It definitely is not slow at all. Almost instant on from sleep and less than a minute to boot from off.

    • That's because it has an SSD hardrive. I'd say everyone else is talking about the CPU & GPU which is where it lacks

      • It's not built for gaming but I run Diablo 3 and steam games like L4D 2 on my MB Air 2010 and 2011 models and they run fine. Obviously you trade off GPU and CPU power for portability and decent battery life.

  • ThinkPad X1 Carbon is better at almost the same price.

    • +2

Have you got a link? I'd be interested if you did.

      • I'm asking too. I tried buying an X1 around this price recently ($60 more), but Lenovo claimed website system error and did not honour the sale.

    • +1

The Carbon has been reviewed with common faults of overheating issues and pretty bad battery life. Couple it with the giant Australia tax Lenovo has imposed, and it's simply not worth it. The best ultrabooks to get are the Macbook Airs and the Asus Zenbook Primes; depending on whether you prefer Windows or OSX (And although you can run Windows on the Air, it isn't worthwhile as a primary OS due to the lack of optimization killing its battery life significantly).

    • it only has a TN panel screen not IPS. It should have the option.

      • although i agree with you, i hate to see what apple will charge for the IPS panel on the MBA.

    • +1

      How do you define better?
Better at giving you more time to sip coffee while you wait for it to boot, or reboot when there's a patch or new piece of software to install.
Better at losing your data and being a right PIA to recover.
Better at not being able to find you files and emails.
      The question was rhetoric BTW.

The X1 looks like a nice machine. I've enjoyed my thinkpads and always liked their keyboards in particular. But, I just don't understand why people feel the need to offer some alternative. If your in the market for an Apple machine. It's not just the hardware spec. It's a whole eco-system, that includes software, O/S, support, re-sale value, the whole experience. The think pad might be great. But try going down to your local lenovo store for one of their free daily workshops. oh, that's right their isn't a lenovo store, and the resellers will tell you to stuff off.

Lenovo have a handy comparison: http://www.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/carbon-infographic.htm…
For speed, and in case my link doesn't work - it shows that the X1 is made of carbon like jet fighters and F1 cars, and the Mac is made of aluminium like an old coke can or alfoil for your lunch.

The whole Apple vs XYZ is kinda old. The X is better is a bit of a joke. Is it in the same class - yes. It's also similarly priced. So, what's better depends on your usage/requirements.

      • +1

cool link. although i do agree with some of what lenovo says especially regarding the WWAN. it would be so handy to just carry one laptop instead of a WWAN modem. then again, a WWAN modem is kinda cool to have esp if you are sharing across multiple devices.

        • I used to have a USB modem for this. But gave it up and just use my iphone tether instead. Tried out new iphone 5 LTE tether over wifi earlier this week when i was at a retreat and suffering internet withdrawal. Works brilliantly although it does suck power quickly from your phone. You won't get thru a day without recharge whilst tethering.

        • kill your data limit too? esp if you are on LTE

        • I use Data Usage on the iphone to monitor traffic and give me alerts eg 50%, 55% and so on.
Have had some bill shocks in the past >$500 several times. So pre-emptive alerts are a bit of a must.

would like to get the 13" fully spec'd air.

  • AU$1,223.20 for the basic x1 carbon with Exclusive Mates Rates: 20% off a Lenovo X1 Carbon
    code:
    20for20X1

    limted to 20

    • Thanks for posting the offer and I know you're not rentony, but how is this "almost the same price"?

  • +1

Hmm this or wait for the incoming touch window 8 laptop. Been holding off any laptop purchase for the foreseeable future.

  • Note, the specs don't list the RAM. But would be safe to assume it's 4GB as per Apple's website;

    11-inch : 128GB
    1.7GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor
    Turbo Boost up to 2.6GHz
    4GB memory
    128GB flash storage1
    Intel HD Graphics 4000

This is a good deal (with free shipping too!). Assuming stock comes from HK, the HK Apple store sells this spec for HKD8488. That converts to A$1056 (excluding Credit Card fees if you buy from HK).

Also, I would assume you won't get a local tax invoice to claim TRS as this is shipped from overseas.

Tempted even though I already own the 2011 model!

    • The specs are clearly listed. I was interested but it's only a 4GB model and it's such a headache to have it upgraded that it's not worth it.
