not sure if firewire 800 is an upgrade :P

Why not get this portable 1.5TB USB 3.0 Segate HDD at Dick Smith for $129 instead?

    http://dicksmith.com.au/product/XM2196/

    • +1

That one is slightly bigger and has a harder time fitting into standard 2.5" cases.

Also, Goflex has a higher RRP. It's supposed to be better.

    • Dick smith deal is better. It is cheaper, it is USB3.

      • +1

goflex is usb3 but also smaller, faster, interface upgradeable - $127.30 @ officeworks via price-match

        • so whats the verdict? Which one's better? I need to buy one asap. Cheers

        • Officeworks one is USB 2.

goflex is depending on the interface, you can plug in USB2, USB3, Firewire. But not at the same time. Normally, one HDD will come with one plug. The OW one is USB2. JB one is USB3.

        • goflex is better

officeworks stock is usb3 as per their title (not description) - they sold out of usb2 a while ago

        • Thanks tonester. I will go with that, will try to pricematch at OW first

        • Pricematched at OW without hesitation, got it for 127.30

        • so whats the verdict? Which one's better? I need to buy one asap. Cheers

          This one is better.

        • enjoy, bghunter :)

  • Firewire 800 Deal is not $7.77 anymore, and not sure if it's suitable for the portable range.

  • These are great HDD's.
I bought the exact same one a year or two ago and it works flawlessly, upgraded the interface to USB3 and now its so much faster.

  • Does anyone find when backing up large volumes of files to a Seagate external, that it kind of seizes up?

Windows explorer still looks fine, but the pop up for files being moved, shows that the number of items remaining is not changing.

Then the pop up can't be closed, despite clicking on cancel and you have to force the computer off because shutting down gets stuck on the logging off screen for over 10 minutes.

I tried looking up the problem and found other people asking Seagate for help but getting none.

    • Have you tried turning off write-caching for the drive? In Properties for the drive in Device Manager, choose Optimise for Quick Removal.

      • Checking, thanks :)

update Write caching is off by default and it is off …

        • it might be a motherboard driver issue, my new laptop from HP (G6-2113TU) cannot even find release drivers let alone update drivers for things like usb interfaces or camera which means I'm stuck using their bloatware until they are integrated into Microsoft Update. My 3-4 year old desktop (x5810) from Acer has great drivers but still won't recognize portable hard drives as ejectable meaning I have to just plain pull them out and risk file corruption every time I want to remove it which is 2-3 times a day. Check your Manufacturers website that's the only way to solve the issue in my opinion.

    • Maybe try; under Power settings set Turn off Hard disk = "Never" & USB Selective suspend setting = "Disabled"

    • Are you trying to copy multiple files in parallel? i.e multiple file copy operations happening at the same time.
Sometimes drives or USB buses can't handle this. Try using an alternative copying program such as TeraCopy that automatically queues copy operations instead of trying to do them all at once.
Even if you aren't doing parallel transfers, try TeraCopy anyway. This may help you to determine whether it's an windows explorer issue or not. The free version is fine.

  • What are usb3 speeds like on this drive?

  • Can somebody run CrystalDiskInfo and post the results? I want to find out the rpm, buffer size etc. Cheers

  • Whats the reason OW is pricematching it for 127.30, is it because the JB HIFI $134 includes shipping, so I assume the shipping cost is $6.70? Is this right?

  • Model @ OfficeWorks is SGTA1500BK $199

    Model @ JBHiFi is STAA1500301 $134

    Seems they are different products

I am woindering if OW will price match????

  • Went to JB today (not OW, as I have an $80 JB voucher I need to get rid of) in Brighton and they have no stock. Was told there were 5 available in Malvern. Drove from Brighton to Malvern and there was a 'stock discrepancy'. Called Brighton and asked them to order one in for me. Guy called every JB within 500km (exaggeration) and nobody has them. All stores with seemingly available stock have it missing or stolen. I was told I could add credit to my JB voucher and buy online.

So I have to now go into the store to buy a product online :)
