  • Kenwood DMX5020S $379.
What I love about the Kenwood brand is that they clearly state all specification so for DIY people like me it's a very handy feature, also you get the best audio quality output and the best (for the price) pre-amp for future expansions.
I just installed a Kenwood DMX7522DABS (higher price) and I simply love it, the audio volume is very high (I only use 1/3 of volume with high sensibility speakers), 4 speaker setup plus under seat subwoofer, I just love it this brand!

    • also you get the best audio quality output

At this pricepoint it's all much of a muchness. Almost any modern head unit is going to be great.

the best (for the price) pre-amp for future expansions.

It has about the same spec'd 3x2.0v outputs as the Pioneer. They both have 13 band eq's. Any differences in SQ here are going to be personal preference, if they're audible at all.

You didn't mention the biggest "PRO", which is the Kenwood has wireless carplay. Though I'd always plug my phone in for the battery drain, it means you can do so into the latest fast charger.

  • How much do they charge for installation for installation (2014 i30)? I will ask them too but good to know if someone else went through them.

      Just have to ask them…
It's not hard if you just want to plug a headunit in.
Just get the correct arepro converter cable for the car's wiring loom, and the headunit you buy, then plug it in.
You will need a dash surround too. You might need to switch 1 or 2 of the connectors around depending, but generally not hard at all.

If you want to run new cables etc thats the hard part.
Speakers can be a little tricky, but depends if you want to worry about those as well or not.

Amps, etc, a whole other story…

It's not hard if you just want to plug a headunit in

Maybe not hard for you, the accessories and adaptors are not always 100% plug & play depending on the head unit brand/model and car.

        • Pretty sure i mentioned that.
Didnt say it was "simple"… said "not hard".
Just need some guidance and focus if one is unsure.
          (;

    • I had mine installed at Autobarn and cost me somewhere between $350-400 last year.

    • Autobarn quoted $150 per each pair of speaker (x2), $150 for the head unit, $250 for installing accessories.
I bought all my stuff online plus the subwoofer and wires and installed myself and saved ~$1,000.
I also did the wiring which is the hardest part especially for the front doors, back panels and subwoofer and that would cost more money.

      @cvaz where do u live?
If you are not happy with the peice quoted by the guys at bankstown, there is always airtasker.
Id give you a help (assuming you have the space and time) if i wasnt in a few physical pieces atm…

PM me if you want some guidance and feel you would be remotly savvy and confident enough to give it a crack.

      • Thank you!

  • I’ve got a 202 ASX with Bluetooth (thoughts and prayers). It’s an old school integrated headunit with nothing but LCD display. I would love CarPlay headunit but I’m unsure if the steering wheel controls will still integrate if I updated the dash fitting and headunit. Am also interested in the likely cost if anyone can help giving me an idea of that. The car would be worth $8k so don’t wanna spent 1/4 of its value on it…

Would purchasing something like this be the first step? https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/304931237859

Then I buy a ‘double fin’ CarPlay headunit and get someone to install it right?

    I’m
Not sure if it makes more problems or if it’s more straightforward than I’m thinking?

    • I buy a ‘double fin’ CarPlay headunit and get someone to install it

You should first find someone who would install it before buying anything.

      • Good thinking. Any idea what a ballpark figure would be?

        • You need to tell what car do you have, budget and how many speakers you want to install (some cars have 2 pairs).
Stay away from the Chinese head unit brands, they are good and cheaper for a reason.

          • @billadm: Stay away from good cheap ones?

            • @miasommers: Stay away from unknown Chinese brands, that might be sold on Ebay or Aliexpress. I have used one before. Extremely buggy, just crashes, freezes, overheats, microphone for calls doesn't work. Constantly disconnects. It is not worth wasting money on them.

If you going to upgrade your head unit, consider installing one with wireless Apple Carplay and wireless Android Auto. Considering the amount for the unit, additional parts for fitting, installation costs etc. It is worth paying a bit more for complete wireless https://www.bankstownsound.com.au/product/pioneer-dmh-z6350b… This one is $590. I have this unit. It auto connects each time you start the engine. No need to pull your phone out each time and disconnect the phone again when you exit the car. Connects flawlessly with maps and music apps.

    • Does that unit do phone mirroring or is it able to play video?

  • Anyone else been spammed by these guys in recent days?
5 emails plus an SMS in 3 days.
Prior to that i've received 2 emails all year, which is perfect.
Marketing dept. needs to cool down a bit or start losing subs
