    @ bunnings for those wondering

  • +1

What is this and why do I need one?

    • It’s a rotary hammer drill to drill holes where normal drill don’t work like masonry etc.

      • +10

Its a crapton better than even a normal drill with hammer function.

I recently had to drill a few holes in normal red bricks.I used my normal Ozito brushless hammer drill for the first one and it took ages and my hands went numb with the high frequency vibration. Then I broke out my ozito SDS rotary hammer drill and it went through the same bricks like butter. Seriously it was 10x faster, way less vibration and quieter.

So if you have more than an occasional need to drill a hole or two in concrete/bricks then this SDS drill is for you. You can also use it as a mini jack hammer in non-rotary mode. - only some of them like my Ozito can do this. Apparently this Dewalt one can't.

        • -1

$0.02 just increase the speed for brick. My Makita 2 speed drills through brick faster the my SDS. SDS comes in to its own with concrete.

        • The beauty of these is that you don't need to press hard on the drill; just let the tool do the work.

        • Ozito brushless hammer drill

Some bricks are very nasty like they have steel inside, I can't tell what they are made with but I burned two drill bits with a corded Metabo hammer drill (basic one) just to make a 8mm hole.
Cheap cordless hammer drills are useless when you meet a hard material, but also you could use special brand multi purpose drill bits, don't use the hammer function (these drill bits don't need hammer) and cool the drill bit with water before it's too hot.

        • +1

Agree. I have a cheap Rockwell SDS and cuts through like butter. Couldn't even drill a hole in brick trying a normal hammer drill. Wasted an hour trying

It's parts of a stick blender, the top portion

I was researching SDS Rotary Hammer drills a few months ago and I found this article to be very useful.

Ended up buying the $99.98 corded 1500W 5J Rotary Hammer Drill Kit and it went through 30 y.o. dense concrete in less than a minute. 10mm dia. holes.

I use my Ryobi 18V Hammer Drill for drilling in brickwork (mostly 8mm holes for masonry wall plugs).

      • I've been trying to decide between purchasing that same Ozito drill or a cordless one such as this deal. Is this corded drill more powerful than the battery counterparts?

  • So did you ask bunnings for the battery? or did they just give it? like did it look like there was any confusion or anything about it?

    • It's a redemption as pictured. You need to get it from dewalt

      • I was given a 5 ah battery with it ,I don't know why

        • You are right, it's immediate now. Usually you had to claim it through dewalt

    • +1

i did not ask for the battery ,when item was scanned cashier was even surprised by that ( free battery) she got me one from the battery cabinet

      • So on your receipt does it show the battery? - That would suggest your further redemption wont work.

        • +1

Receipt mentions free battery ,but to be fair doesn't mutter if redemption doesn't get approved, still a good deal ,5 ah battery is worth $135

        • My receipt does not mention the free battery I got with it:

          Link

    • +1

My receipt shows I paid $0.01 for the battery. Doesn’t this mean i paid for it (1 cent)? Technically I think I should be eligible for the redemption, as I haven’t received a free battery.

      • I just received my battery from DEWALT. $207.01 for 2 * 5A batteries + drill.

  • is it. brushless or brushed ?

    • Brushless

  • +9

Just note this doesn't have a hammer only mode, so cannot be used with a chisel bit to lift tiles, demo masonry etc.

    • +1

hmm chisel would have been nice, but guess the 5amp battery is till a sweetener.

      • The Bosch one mentioned just below is $199 and has a chisel function and redemption for 5ah battery. Depends what ecosystem you prefer. I got one from Sydney Tools with a price match to Bunnings because I had the bonus points to redeem.

Also from 2-4 November Sydney Tools has a Dewalt bonus points “Roadshow” if you are team yellow and black. Minimum spend to get points is $250.

    • yea went to buy one today and that's a big miss. Ozito will have to do :(

  • +2

Same type of redemption deal is still running for Bosch blue users

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/805045

    • I got this one. It's a nice piece of kit for $199 with battery. Drills through brick/concrete etc like butter. Way better than my brushless 18v Bosch Blue drill.

Only downside is the battery placement is shit. You need to loosen and twist the handle to remove/insert battery. Some of the other models they've fixed it on, as the battery slides in from the back, not the front.

      • Which charger did you purchase for it?
any specific drill heads you recommend for drilling into brick work

        thanks

  • I have a cheap corded Ozito rotary and a couple of drills with the hammer function. If not necessary, I usually would rather spend a few more minutes using the lighter drill rather than the heavy and chunky corded Ozito (mainly for red bricks only; if for concrete, rotary hammer for sure).

Would it be a good idea to get one of these dewalts as the middle ground? My cordless tools are all Ozito, ryobi and makita though.

    • +4

I've got the Ozito brushelss one and its very good. Its nice and lightweight. https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-pxc-18v-brushless-rotary-h…
I wouldn't/didn't pay $200 for it though, this Dewalt one is much better value at that price (- but factor in a charger).

I've found over the years that I just buy whichever tool is cheapest on clearance/sale, and that usually means it comes with a with battery.

I mean the theory of tool/battery systems was great and all, but the retail skin-only pricing doesn't ever seem to reflect that premise. So we bargain hunters all end up with multiple batteries/chargers/tools anyway. At least there are battery adapters available these days.

E I note there is a baby one available now, if its just brick I'd probably get that…

  • Do you guys put lubricant on the drill bit when using a rotary/SDS drill?

    • +1

Only time I've used a steady flow of water when drilling in concrete with SDS drill is when I was drilling a deep hole with a hole saw and the concrete dust wouldnt evacuate properly. Generally the flutes on the drill bits do a good job of getting dust out of the hole.

Lubricant other than flowing water would just make the concrete dust clag up I'd think

Edit: and it is generally recommended to lightly grease the bit you put in the chuck

    • +3

Yes but against popular belief don't put it on the shaft of the bit. The stuff that usually comes in the box with the drill is lithium grease, it just needs to be applied sparingly to the flutes on the bit that goes into the drill and the end that's going to be in contact with the hammer.

  • +1

Great, now I have two rotary hammer drills.

    • ozito makita and dewalt now….just need a bosch 18v to complete the kit.

      • If you tape them all together you could drill a 70mm hole

  • How much drilling into brick and concrete are you guys doing?

Unless you value the Dewalt battery and are already in their eco system I’d think the ozito at $99 is a better buy. Sure it’s corded but for the one or two times you drill into concrete a year it will be more than enough

  • Can confirm….got battery with this for 1 cent as well. There was a list of items that had the offer. Not sure what others were on list but there was about 30 items so might be worth it to ask

  • My receipt said nothing about an extra battery and when I asked, they said it’s just via the redemption. Possibly store specific for extra battery on the spot?

    • My purchase was from springvale bunnings,Receipt does say free battery

  • Today there is a post at bunnings springvale tool section saying (free 5ah battery with the particular tool)nothing to do with the redemption.

  • +2

So today in the post, guess what arrived, yes, another 5ah battery from the online redemption!

    • +3

      Same here
      I bought 3 drills and i got 6 batteries 5ah in total.
      3 bunnings 3 redemption

  • Awesome. I wanted a couple more items but didnt get them. Would have definitely got them if i was sure the redemption battery was coming too

  • Black Friday coming up.

  • Now up to $248.99 but still a good deal - got click and collect - had to ask for battery but not on reciept leaving option to claim 2nd if so inclined.
