MacBook Air 15" M2 8GB/256GB $1797 (RRP $2199) + Delivery ($0 to Metro/ in-Store/ C&C) @ Officeworks

291

Product Overview:
The 15-inch MacBook Air is impossibly thin and has a stunning Liquid Retina display. Supercharged by the M2 chip — and with up to 18 hours of battery life1 — it delivers incredible performance in an ultraportable design.

Quite a good price, even beating the apple on campus and education pricing. I have heard from mkbhd that this is one of the best if not the best 15" ultrabook on the market.

Quite limited stock in stores at least in QLD, should be able to price match with competitors such as JB.

Preemptively dismissing the comments doesn't make their criticism any less valid…

Maybe this post isn't for those users who don't feel this is good value for their needs? I don't understand why people need to criticise it. If you don't see the value then don't take interest in the post? Really depends on usage and what people want at the end of the day. My 32GB RAM Windows machine doesn't always outperform my wife's 8GB RAM M2 Air. Plus there's so much more to it with weight, portability, battery life, ecosystem benefits and so on. Could get into more detail of course but the point is pretty simple. Anyway, for those that it suits…this is a good price. All the best to the neg voters cos it's pointless self satisfaction. Enjoy your evenings.

For the very same reason why there are negative commens in any post. To warn people who do not know anything about it.

          • +5

@John Doh: Fair call actually. Just that there's a lot of negativity just based on the number alone not real life usage/experience.

            • +5

@ritzaus: 8GB on MBA is enough for today as its very fast and OS is efficient. But people will use this for next 5 to 6 years. We are almost in 2024. Imagine using a laptop with 8GB RAM in 2029 to 2030. Its a bad value.

Add to it, as memory usage increases in the coming couple of years due to more bloated feature rich apps, more swapping will be required and will eat up into that 256GB disk life and make it go bad. And you cant replace the disk losing the entire 2K. More land fill.

              • +1

@John Doh: Indeed, not only is the machine low spec for RAM and SSD, but they are not upgradeable.

          • +5

@John Doh: yes, I find the debate that occurs (generally) useful in making purchasing decisions

        • +20

If you think 8GB of RAM and 256GB for an $1800 laptop is reasonable, then you're not looking at the bigger picture. The base model of the Macbook Air is a classic bait-and-switch - lure customers with a seemingly low price, then hit them with ridiculous costs for upgrades that are essential for even basic future-proofing. It's not just a bad deal; it's a deliberate strategy to milk more money out of buyers.

People need to wake up and see these tactics for what they are. It's not about being negative; it's about being realistic and calling out Apple for their misleading pricing model. There’s a difference between value and being taken for a ride. Just because some people are okay with overpaying for underperformance doesn't mean we shouldn't point out the obvious rip-off this is. If you're fine with getting the short end of the stick with Apple's pricing games, go ahead, but let's not pretend this isn't shady as

          • @narmirarmi: Call Apple out? I’m sure Tim will care about your opinion.

            • +5

@Icecold5000: well clearly you cared enough to comment.

And every person that reads the comment chain takes something away from it, something that informs their next purchase, the advice they give to someone looking to buy a laptop or phone, a conversation with a colleague, a comment on a creators social media post. What even is your opinion?
That only those with a direct line of communication to Tim himself should bother commenting, advising, complaining or discussing? Thanks for leaving a comment lacking any substance or substantive position!

You sound very sad, do you not believe in voting? canvassing? protesting. Leaving a comment is free for me, choosing not to leave a stupid, ignorant comment is… free for you too!!!

Not to mention I didn't say anything about Tim caring about my opinion, but people, far more popular than me, are discussing the exploitative pricing structure and ticket prices of these products, and people will change their purchasing patterns around this discussion. If

Having a MacBook enables such high productivity and focus that you won't find yourself needing to open an excessive number of tabs needing more than 8G of unified ram.

    • +1

As always, assess your needs and make a purchase accordingly.

Don't believe the hype or haters.

Yep. Windooooows and Androoooid users can't comprehend having such a resource efficient machine.

Completely agreed. A lot of people just thought that that 8GB is still enough these days, which have a very poor understanding particularly in the context of non-replaceable MB parts.

Max Tech recently demonstrated how swap memory are being used much often on the 8GB comparing to 16GB version of MBP. Swap slows down the overall experience and also degrades your SSD quicker over the lifetime of your laptop https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmWPd7uEYEY

  • This with 10% back on woolies everyday rewards is a great deal. Very tempted.

  • +2

Hopefully they’re still this price next week to price match with JB HiFi and use 15% off gift cards for further savings

  • +5

Hmm i think ill upgrade the stora……. Maybe just the ra….. Maybe ill just stick to the base mo…..

  • That's cheaper than I thought they would ever go. Maybe it's not selling well because of slow SSD or maybe sales fell after M3 chip was announced - people waiting for M3 MBA maybe in April. Anyway, if Apple gives a $300 gift card on Black Friday, and if you can get discount gift cards, then it will be even cheaper.

    • Hahah good one
I own a 16GB M2 Pro MBP which I really wanted to switch to for main use from many years hackintoshing, but it's just that much laggier than the hack I have that I dumped the idea until the scene is dead.. Imagine if Intel wasn't stuck at 10nm..

      • +2

16GB m2 Pro is laggier? Really? In what scenarios?

        • +1

Overall responsiveness mainly, and then obviously slower in the workloads being code compilation for me.
To be fair, I do like to have many things open and have high expectations, but as those who have used a 144Hz+ screen and can no longer use a 60Hz, so can't I put up with a Chrome tab not being as instant to open as on the 13900k hackintosh.
Is it slow? Not really. Same as a 60Hz screen isn't for most people. But definitely slower.
Would most likely be better with more ram

          • @digitizer: Wow, I am surprised. I tried a 13inch m1 pro 8GB for 2 days and blown away by how fast it was compared to the last intel MBP. Like it could compile the code at 65% of the time it took the intel mac and that too on battery with 13 chrome tabs open and all of them playing youtube videos. That actually made me a fan of M series.

But really havent used a M2 Pro or compared it to a 13900K, but I thought it would be a heck lot faster than a 13" m1 pro.

            • @John Doh: Oh I am as big of a fan as anyone, and was looking forward to switching, just very expensive to get similar speed still.
Check these Xcode benchmarks on different hardware

              $6600 Mac Studio 2023 M2 Ultra 24-core still slower than a budget 13900K setup..
              And I can see a 13900KS benching at 45s vs Studio's 56s, and MBP M2 Pro's 85s..

              • @digitizer: Oh nice. We are so much alike when it comes to benchmarking lol. I want to ask another thing since I dont have a MBP. How does the IDE respond on the M2? From what I have seen, intelliJ for ARM responds to code changes, recompilation, auto suggestions way faster than Intel Mac. Does the 13900k beat the M2 in this scenario?

      • +2

Wow - I been seriously considering a 16gb M2 MBP the past few weeks, mainly for the battery life - interesting to hear that you're not happy with it

        • +2

See my comment above. Definitely depends on your usage scenario and expectations.
As I said, I am a bit spoilt by being used to 165hz screens on a fast CPU with 64gb ram (thanks Ozb), but then I don't think I met anyone who likes to keep closing stuff on their computer, and even though MacOS does a stellar job swapping things in and out of disk, it's still noticeable if you are picky.

          • @digitizer: Have you seen your typical memory usage go above 32Gigs though? Just curious. Lets say you have 3 IDEs open and 40 chrome tabs and you are compiling code. Whats your memory usage like? I have a 165Hz 27" DGF and 120Hz C2 4K and only in 4K i can feel the Hz difference due to large screen between 60 and 120. On th 27" the only dead give away is the scrolling, which I will take atleast couple hours to figure out on a typical day.

            • @John Doh: Easily.. over 40gb with a couple of IDEs and a few chrome tabs open. Memory usage is quite tricky to understand as the system tries to use all available, but I saw it swapping on 32GB so got some more, given that.. I could (and it's nowhere near the $300 per 8GB increment Apple charges)

              • @digitizer: OK, that means any developer going forward who wants to use the M series and does a lot of compilation/video editing, better stick with 32Gigs to save the SSD. Ya, it only costs like 45$ for them and they charge customers 300$ for it. Crazy! Anyway, I would never buy a MBP unless the company I work for buys me one. Cant justify the asking price. I might consider an used M2 Pro, but my 7800X3D is already an overkill for my use.

I bought my 2021 m1 Air for $1300 how is this considered a deal? 8g ram in 2021 was ludicrous and nearing 2024 is beyond a joke

    • This is soo boring.

Yeah, you don't like the price. Nobody does. So the OP posted a ~20% off deal. No matter how offending it is to you, it's nothing personal, and you won't see these new cheaper, unless there's more AUD and USD parity, like it's 2012 again or something.

      • -5

Ludicrously inflated deals with a slight reduction aren't a deal

  • Just picked up one of these from Costco for $1749.99 in store, deal expires 29/11/2023
13' MacBook Air 8GB 256GB currently also 1599.99, expires same date
