  • What do you mean host the Midjourney and ChatGPT? As these VPS do not have GPU

    • Sorry poor wording… I host a front-end so I can share subscriptions.

  • I am looking for a VPS. Am currently with Binary Lane.

Any idea if Racknerd support running docker containers and allow a custom domain to be pointed to the docker container?

    • Yes I run Docker under Ubuntu with my own domains. No issues.
You get root access, so really no limitations.

      • Thanks mate.

I previously asked Quantum Core VPS and they said their system does not support docker as they do not have certain virtualization support or something - hence the question.

Glad that Racknerd can run docker fine.

I am currently using Ubuntu 22.04 on 1GB VPS with Binary Lane and I have like 150MB left from the 1GB ram. Which Ubuntu version would you suggest if I sign up with racknerd for 1GB VPS? how about for 2GB VPS?

        • +1

If you're just using it as a headless server (e.g. to ssh into, no GUI), then ubuntu server should be fine. Or debian 12 (bookworm) - I've switched all my linux VMs from ubuntu to debian over the last year.

          • @qwijibo: Thanks bro. Which ubuntu server version would you suggest for 1GB and for 2GB?

I know ubuntu 18.04 LTS is end of life soon so maybe the choice is between 20.04 LTS and 22.04 LTS - a bit unsure which to go for.

I think i will stick with Ubuntu for now - may move to debian in a bit - still not ultra familiar with linux.

        • +1

I use Ubuntu 22.04 only because that is what I know and it seems low overhead. Newer Debian seem to have higher RAM requirements, which is strange because the older versions were extremely lightweight/

Mine are the 2.5GB, because they came with 2 cores and I had no idea what I needed. On each I run dozens of docker containers, but CPU barely blips.

If it helps these are the commands I issued to install docker…

          curl -fsSL https://get.docker.com -o get-docker.sh
          sudo sh ./get-docker.sh

"nested virtualisation" is the term you're looking for

          • +1

@bdl: Thanks. Thats indeed the term I am looking for. :-)

Thanks perfect timing, heading over to China in a few months need a VPS to jump the firewall!

  • which server location is best recommended? Seems most of the location is in USA - which is fastest?

    • +1

Unfortunately yes, from where I am "LAX" has the lowest latency. "DAL" was quite bad. NY was okay.
During selection they shown you a test IP, you can ping.

  • +2

Just FYI you can transfer VPS at a later time when stock is available LA

    • thanks mate. Good to know.

  • Thanks Op and everyone helping. I got the 2.5GB VPS plan. Came to USD $26.31 for me. I paid using paypal AUD $42.29. I also ping the servers and LA is the fastest for me.

Edit: Installed docker and portainer on Ubuntu 22.04. No issues. Find that the VPS is actually much faster than the binary lane one. But not fair to compare since the binary lane one is a 1 core 1GB.

    • LA is hosted in Multacom Data centre, only about 150ms to ozzy so usually can pull 70MBps

  • you can also see all their past deals here: www.racknerdtracker.com it is affilate links i think but nice collated

  • Are these recurring discounts?

    • +1

Yes, that is the recurring price, during sign-up it should say "Recurring Amount".
After you have signed up, in your client area it will have a section that says "Recurring Amount" and price.

      • +1

good to know. with what i am paying it comes to about $3.60 per month. I think very reasonable for a 2.5GB VPS.

        • Looking at https://www.racknerdtracker.com/ I see some better looking deals than I see in the post.

I've got a couple of RackNerd VPSes and out of all the 3rd tier cloud services (1st being AWS/Azure/GCS etc, 2nd Vultr/Linode/Digital Ocean, etc), they are by far the best. Low latency to AU as well, I get ~140ms pings to their LAX data centre.

    No mention of Australia servers?

  • Same price after 1 year?
