It's cheap, not really cheap. Good deal for the moment but there have been much better deals within the last 2-3 weeks.

    • +3

You're right, but I usually always seem to see them when it's too late :(

    • whats the cheapest its been? this would make the perfect 123movies streamer on the TV

      • +6

        118 for 16gb 512 version

        • +1

now thats a deal, hook it up with a keyboard remote device from ebay and gg

          • @Roe Jogan: Remote device?

            • +7

@Osiris: hand held Bluetooth remote shape device that has a mini keyboard and touch pad, eliminates the large mouse keyboard good for tv browsing

        • +4

$55.99 on Nov 11th for that model, delivered the next day.

It was reduced to $236 and there was a flash $180 coupon. I wasn't really looking, just hit buy and after a few mins all seemed to have gone so presumably a pricing error but it was honoured.

  • +1

What do ppl use this for mainly? Travel?

    • +5

Home media centre would be the most common usage

    • +2

Potentially mini server even or high end htpc

    • +6

      Computer for ants

      • +1

        I understood that reference

    • +1

i use it to torrent and stream stuff on the big tv, rather than having a laptop around we only have a desktop and one of these mini pcs.
ours is N100 , where it uses less power.
single stick of 16GB is defitiely recommended since it's single channel
if you're upgrading in the future you'll have to throw away the exisiting 8gb out and replace it with a 16gb. you might as well upgrade early.

    • +1

      Home Assistant

      • Do you run that on a Linux docker
        or you keep it Win11 (errr…) ?

    • Bought one for my grand to run his Nintendo emulation games..

  • +9

    16GB RAM+512GB M.2 SSD $256.

The reviews on Amazon asia seem fairly alarming

      • Size Name: AK1 PLUS (16+512) 12th Intel Alder Lake- N95 very good reviews, I think you were reading Ryzen reviews,Size Name: AMD Ryzen 7 5800U(16+512)

    • Beelink one similar spec similar price often.

    • +4

      https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B0CGZW8R5L

      I reckon that's better. $259 and it's an N100

      • Surely it goes cheaper over Black Friday

        • That's what I'm hoping :)

      • This looks good but what version of OS does it come with? Is it Windows 11?

    • +3

No idea where you're getting that from lol

      • Personal testing. Anything too complex struggles. Including anything with complex encoding.

I mean who would run windows on this? Why?

      • +4

I mean who would run windows on this? Why?

Anyone who wants to use Windows desktop apps.

Is that a serious question ?

Most people want their desktops to run Windows.

        • +1

Aren’t most people buying these to use as home servers?

          • +1

            @CommuterPolluter: No, I wouldn't have thought so.

Certainly some people do - but this is a tiny fraction of the people who are just buying this as a desktop. The home server market is miniscule 😁

        • This thing is a little bit too weeny for Windows unless it's for for grandma.

However it does have Intel Quick Sync and could probably be an exceptional little docker server with 16GB of memory. You could run a boatload of lite things on this and or including transcoding / plex serving.

I think for the price it makes a pretty nice little server, for Windows use I'd err towards a used HP 400, 405, 800, 805 or Lenovo M75Q system - anything made in the past 2 years with 16GB.

      • +1

These are essentially a cheaper version of the Intel NUC. Work out the numbers for yourself.

The vast majority of my Business Customers will use this kind of thing (NUC) as they take so little space, are pretty quiet and just work 24/7 reliably, most often with 2 monitors - Version 8 aside which often overheat NUCs are incredibly reliable. One failure out of approx.200 for me and that DOA. BTW - with version 8, a new fan and thermal compound fixes that (or just lube the old one).

I've no doubt these won't last as long as NUC but they have a real place for normal users who just want a smooth office/retail environment.

    • +2

Not sure why you are being down voted, W11 isn't a great experience with 8GB. But then, I'd not run windows on it anyway.

      • Yeah, not sure why I'm getting the down votes either. I've worked with Windows 11 with 8gb ram. Even a PowerPoint or complex spreadsheet brings it to a halt. But I guess it depends what you're using it for.

  • Anyone know if the windows licence transferable or OEM? Or if it has a licence at all? Could chuck truenas on this and update my home PC to win11

    • +1

They are oem license tied to hardware. You can't transfer it.

    • +6

Use the MAS script from Github, it'll give you a permanent key for Win 10 or 11. Super easy, takes less than a min.
And iirc Windows 10 gets a free 11 update anyway.

  • Up to what console it can comfortably emulate?

    • +2

At a guess, up to PSX. Maybe some Game Cube. Dreamcast is probably fine, arcade would be good too

      • N64 is always hit and miss

      • +1

        Thank you

  • +1

I don't know the right place to ask but what are these used for why would I use it/not use it compared to the i5 gen 8 refurb laptop/desktops that comes up for the same price?

    • +2

      Because it's small?

    • +2

I bought an N100 for office admin use, typically it runs Outlook, Word, Excel, PDF Reader and Chrome all day long. These apps feels snappy enough that I don't feel any lag. It also drives two 28" 4k monitors fine.

It's a small PC that takes up little desk space.

    • +2

I’m not seeing 8th gen refurbished desktops for sub-$200, they all still cost more. It’s also a lot more efficient especially in low power scenarios. Good if you wanna keep it powered on for long periods of time for a server.

      • There's this deal - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/810361 posted not that long ago

        • That looks like a good deal.

I'm out of the PC game for a long time
(since I picked up a cheap Lenovo small footprint PC)

However, it's been 4-5 years now,
and I need to upgrade on the cheap.

        • It’s still more expensive and you’re also dealing with used hardware. The extra 2 cores and having 16gb ram ootb is nice for the price, though i’d personally just wait for another n95 PC to go on a bigger sale. They happen pretty often.

  • Does it have DP or HDMI 2.1?

    • Two hdmi 2.0 only.

    • Nothing you can run on this needs HDMI 2.1

      • In-home game streaming can certainly benefit from HDMI 2.1, since it supports 4K at 120Hz with VRR, which makes it ideal for high-refresh gaming on 4K TVs.

  • +1

Can I use this as a TV hub kinda thing?

Download the apps (apple music, YouTube, Netflix etc, radio apps). Then connect it to a TV with a mouse and keyboard? Possible to also connect a audio dac (or install one on board) to then connect to my speakers?

Or do I need someone more?

    • +2

I was thinking the same. Perhaps run Kodi as well.

    • Something more **

    • Should work fine.

  • Would this run Minecraft ok?

  • +3

Personally if I was going to buy a NUC with the N95 processor, I’d go for this Trigkey one, as it has double the RAM and SSD, and better connectivity (faster USB ports) for only $30 more. (This one is $110 off via coupon, so $229 delivered)

    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0CGZX9M96?ref=emc_p_m_5_i_atc&…

They also do an N100 option in different sizes, but they are of course more $$$

    • Good call

    • It's been this price for over a month now. Hopefully goes on a lightening deal next week

    • so, what's a "good" CPU in one of these small NUC-format PCs ?

I'm out of the game, for a long time now,
but looking to upgrade to another small machine,
      and looking for ~AU$ 250+
(before adding SSDs to it, etc. )

Isn't it worth to get an Intel-branded NUC,
so that video cards could be better
or the CPU has more cache ?
      ( I guess it'll be more dearer too )

      • +1

Here I'm looking for an AMD build, the iGPU actually matters and these will basically never get a dGPU or even eGPU connected. Wanting price is depending on specs but anywhere between AUD $200 to $600 mark for a little unit.

Specs should be between 16GB to 64GB RAM, 256GB SSD to 1TB nVme, or unless these are removable. And less importantly from USB 3.0 upto TB4 port, HDMI 1.4 to 2.1, Gigabit Ethernet plus, and other neat features.

        Processor should be anywhere between Aerith, 6600u, Z1, Sephiroth, 7640u, 6800u, Z1e, 6800h, 7840u, 7840h.

It's looking like the best way is to find a used model (niche), or to pickup one of those Windows Handhelds and use it as double-duty as a TV Dock.

        • I've just an older refurbed Lenovo NUC look-alike from 5+ years ago.
It had an i5 with 16GB of RAM,
and 2 x SATA slots, but the embedded video card is typical generic video-card,
that is struggling to keep up with newer programming languages.

So, I thought if I was going to stick to embedded video cards,
I should go for a decent video output,…or one that will get good driver support.

As for CPUs, I don't know what's good right now,
but I was looking for a good cache and all up,
I didn't want the whole PC to be more than $ 300.

          • +1

@whyisave: Ideally I would buy that Xbox Series X that is on special for under $600, and somehow be able to dualboot it between xbOS and Windows 10 Pro. It's both cheap and fast, basically unbeatable value.

But there's no way (currently) to access the system or kernel. And even if some * wink-wink* MS Employee were to leak an experimental build of Windows10 for it…. it would barely be functional, and a lot of features like codecs and game-ready drivers would be missing. So yeah, pipedream.

To even come close to the value propsosed by the Xbox Series X, the best we could hope for is a $450 priced, one of those Beelink Boxes, with an 1TB nVme, 16GB RAM, and AMD r7-7840H (slightly ahead of the Xbox Series S). But those said boxes go instead for around $900. At that point you may as well instead spend $1100 to get the ASUS ROG Ally, it has many advantages but it's definitely a regression in performance (Z1e is underclocked 7840u, that's slightly below the Xbox Series S).

So yah, there's no hope of a "console killer" this generation. PCs are now trash, and the consoles are good, speaking from a hardware/value viewpoint.

    • N100 worth the upgrade? Would only be using it as a media centre to run my TV

  • Love to see a deal on a fanless N100 model. Owned a few NUCs over the years as htpc in bedroom, but fans can be a bit annoying when they kick in.

    N95+16+512 was $56 last week

    • Link?

      • Same link, there was a $380 off code for 16+512 model

  • Anything similar where I can play with proxmox and a few VMS? Maybe dual nic for pfsense?

    • I have Beelink eq12. Using proxmox 8 on it for plex, home assistant and pihole. It has dual 2.5 Intel nic.
Running very well. Cpu barely going above 30% unless for starting something. Plex has dedicated 2.5g connection. Other one is for everything else.

    • Or you can look at below one with 4x2.5g intel nic, n100 fanless one. You can run full router and pfsense on it.
      https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005411300587.html

  • I run a Plex server on one of these (using Ubuntu) and works great; supports hardware encoding as well (if you have Plex Pass) and barely breaks a sweat.

  • Fyi
Coupon is only showing $130 for me.
