  • So tempting as the 16GB from Kogan is about $520 shipped.

  • So, it's A-Tick stock but it ships from Hong Kong? How does that work???

    • Read previous deal.

  • How come it ships from Hong Kong warehouse if it's Aussie stock?

  • I recon it is a mistake in the ad, if it aussie stock with 24 months warranty it would not be coming from O/S

  • Its the same model as these previous posts:
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/80099
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/80080

and the rep claims that it is covered by 24 month manufacturers warranty and comes with Australian charger.

I purchased one before so I will let you know how I go. They claim it is A-tick stock so approved for retail sale in Australia but for some reason its shipped from Hong Kong?

    Update:
I so sent them an email about it with the reply:

    Hi,

All mobile phones are made overseas. This one is made for the Australian networks and is covered by Samsung BUT it is located in our warehouse overseas, so it ships from there.

Covered by which Samsung - Samsung OZ or Samsung HK?
Samsung OZ is a distributor of Samsung products, so, why would they cover a parallel-imported phone (even if "made for the Australian networks")?

  • it does have removable storage up to 64 GB microSDXC, isn't it?
    30MB/S UHS-1 32GB/64GB is quite cheap

    • so I'd choose 16GB model with 64GB sd card, same price but it has total 80GB high speed storage not 32GB, several years ago my computer only have 2GB haddisk.

      • Care to explain more?
I always thought with 32GB internal space, your processes will run faster. Similar to a laptop.

        32 + 64 = 96GB, tons of storage space no?

        • +3

I've studied computer science for more than 7 years, never know internal storage will make processes faster. No it doesn't.
What makes the processes faster is, processor and RAM not storage!

yes iPhone can jerk up price for different storage models because they can and they don't have a place for you to plug in.

But for Android phone with microSD storage and GB's of internal memory already, it's kidding kidding me to jerk the price for different storage models. It's not the age that Nexus One or HTC android phones that have only 512MB internal storage any more.

Or if you just like big numbers, yes buy the bigger one, nothing wrong with it

sorry guys, I'm not rep, somehow it won't let me uncheck the 'I'm rep' thing.

        • Thanks for the explanation!
Will wait for a cheaper 16GB S3 then!

        • Actually for internal storage, it affects the program's launching speed/response time (but not running speed), because before executing the applications/OS, the data needs to be read out from that and put into RAM, also during the executing, the apps will need to write some temporary files or read more data from it.

And for the same model/manufacture of flash memory, normally the bigger the storage is, the slower the reading/writing speed and response time is. Though it might not be noticeable in usage and benchmark, but yes, in theory, 32GB model will be slower than 16GB model, on starting up the phone, launching apps, response time and save photos/videos to the storage.

        • Well responsiveness and quickness is one of the main factors I want to buy the S3.
Tried it at a nearby Vodafone outlet and fell in love.

Hopefully the 16GB will go down to maybe $480 shipped.

        • Android uses caching to internal storage, even more intensively than desktop OSs use swap files. Caches remain even while apps are not executing, to allow the app to relaunch more quickly than a "cold" startup.

And despite the addition of "App2SD" capability from Android 2.2 onwards, the vast majority of apps do not support it. So the situation you have is that you are stuck using internal storage for most of your apps and all of your caching.

I'm not saying that it's going to affect your performance right out of the box, or that you can't minimise the impact by carefully managing your apps and cache manually, or that the prices for internal storage aren't excessive, but as you fill up the available internal storage, things will start slowing down quite nicely as the phone spends more and more time on housekeeping, just like a desktop or laptop would.

        • yep, installed 300+ apps and games, use 2.5GB space, far from the 16GB points that needs even one bit more extra housekeeping on the internal storage than 32GB internal one.

Then why we feel the Android phone has slowed down after you have installed 60+ or 100+ apps? Because it IS ANDROID, it just like Windows, most apps wants to startup themselves or their services or use notification/pushing services etc, these processes hogs up the CPU resources (well these processes hogs the internal storage IO as well, but it has no business with less storage space so needs housekeeping, it's the IO). Not the internal storage at all! You can use tools app to manage auto start ups, but it's a time consuming and complicated job for most people. Wait, I didn't tick/allow the apps to start after the phone boots? Well, they still start something at the backend…

And on the other side, iOS has nearly no such problem, even you installed 300+ apps, the system runs the same as a new one. No such rogue apps want to start up after the phone boots even you tell them don't start, and Apple will definitely won't let such thing happen and iOS is designed to be like this.

        • I can't see there's even a tiny reason you want to use X2SD thing while you have more than 8GB internal memory.

        • A 32gb would not be slower then a 16gb version. It's not a mechanical drive so there is no time lost spinning up. Depending on the controller a larger capacity drive can be faster. Either way I don't think the speed difference is noticeable in the real world

Can't wait for the s3 price drop why is it taking so loooooooong???????????

    • Me too! I'm waiting for it to drop to at least 475.. It is not dropping as fast as before. But it surely will with s3 4G coming out and iphone5. Must contain the evil oz bargain impulsive desire to buy and wait…

      • Yeah my theory is that the S3 was only price dropping BEFORE the iphone 5 was released. Now everyone knows how mediocre the iphone 5 is there will be no more S3 price drops :(

Hoping Kogan does an awesome deal for the s3. If he does something crazy like below $400 ill be so happy and in straight away!

  • Just wondering, does it inclusive of GST?

    • +1

      Import so GST not applicable.

      • for small business operating with an ABN, GST is optional for turnover under 75K.

Kogan is not operating with an ABN, it's a HongKong business, not Australia one so no GST.

  • Why Choose Unique Mobiles?

    • Australian based business established in 2004.
    • Australian stock is issued with Australian Tax Invoice.
    • Import stock – Proof of purchase available online

    • and imported stock has no GST same as Kogan.
Australian stock has GST and they can claim it back.

  • Isnt this misleading? I mean it says its from HK how can it be Australian stock? probs just 2 years Unique mobile warranty

    • yeah purchased one yesterday and have emailed them about the warranty.
      They replied:

The phone warranty is covered by two years Samsung warranty. We are an authorized seller of Samsung, It will come with an invoice that is your proof of purchase, not a tax invoice because you are not charged tax. This item would normally be shipped here and sold in stores in Australia but we are offering it direct from overseas even though it is an AUSTRALIAN A-tick phone that is covered by 2 years Samsung warranty.

so not sure what to expect yet lol
      Will keep you posted

  • Well its confirmed the A-tick s3 sent from unique mobiles does get an Australian Warranty.
Someone on whirlpool posted pictures of there A-tick approved galaxy s3 along with the warranty card.
They also registered the serial number with Samsung Australia which confirmed there 24 month warranty.
