“We’ve got RM Williams at home”

  • +1

Tempted, but my last pair of this style is still in the box from another two word brand…

    What was it….?
    MARLO Brando?

  • On a serious note, these are good, but what happens when the heel wears out - how does one get it re-heeled?

    • +18

      Welcome to disposable fashion… ☹️

      • what do you expect at this price point though?

    • +3

that's when you regret your decision and buy a pair of RMs next time

    • Rubber heel. Won't be the first thing to go

      • -2

        thats what she said

    • +4

I've worn these daily for years and the main wear and tear has been on the inside of the boot around the heel and the occasional gouge on the top from carelessly kicking things. They are so comfy I wouldn't really consider RMs unless they were under $200 now.

      • How's sizing?

        • I usually wear US11.5 in Adidas etc and have a pair of these in UK10 and UK9.5 (fit better). They tend to fit a little large for me but YMMV of course.

    • Go to a shoe repair guy? Theres often one in a mall that also cuts keys. Probably $20 and he'll get it done in 10 minutes on the spot.

  • +2

For everyone looking to not buy RM's, Check out Thomas Cook Trenthams - excellent boot / build quality

  • +1

This or spend 5x on RM Williams?

    • Same question i have

    • I've got 3 pair of RM's (2 x black, 1 x chestnut) and they are the best purchase I've ever made.

I've had them for about 10 years now and had them resoled by RM Williams occasionally (i.e. once every 3-4 years). When the boots come back from the factory they literally look like new boots. I've got a suspicion that they are likely the last pair of work shoes I will ever purchase.

    • +6

This or spend 2-3 less on Rivers?

    • I bought Blundstone 663 after having worn these Hush Puppies Chelseas. The Blundstones are much more comfortable underfoot but they also cost more (currently $135 from Allingtons) but the higher price is worth it IMO. It feels more durable and comfortable as a daily.

    • +1

The others in the office will know…. And they will silently judge you

      • +4

        Who gives a f•ck though

        • +3

You will when Noeleen from accounts blanks you at the water cooler.

      • The good thing about working in IT is that no one gives a shit about stupid stuff like that.

    • Spend 6x on Carlos Santos

    • So I just dropped my RMs for a service today
9 years old - time to resole

Expensive outlay but cost per wear is good

  • -1

They dont last long though for daily use - max 1 year lol. Went through 2 so far.

    • +5

Same for any shoes that are <$100 though. I wear Adidas sneakers daily and they only last 8-12 months before the sole rubs through.

      • +6

the trick is to own many pairs, so the shoes last* for many years

        • This is the way

      • Same. Can't use for a year.

    • Yeah same and I don't like throwing away shoes with perfectly good leather upper

    • +2

Long enough for 1 day in office

      • +1

        I lol'ed

    • +1

Completely disagree. I daily drive these, put about 8KM on them daily round trip to and from work. On year 3 of ownership. Probs could use a professional buff and colour but they certainly aren't wearing out.

      • Yep - like all shoes, the amount of wear and tear will depend on the wearer's weight and walking style.

  • +3

I own these Chelsea boots as well as the black and tan colours. These mahogany ones have been returned twice within 6 weeks of buying due to fading and spotting as the top layer rubs off and you see the lighter brown colour appears in some spots. Just my experience with this one.

    • Same. Worn once

  • Have my hush puppies for 3 years now, sole is starting to fall apart but for (at the time) $50 I think I got good use out of them. Bought some RMs off that other deal, if they don't fit I'll return and will probably buy these.

    • RMs comes in many sizes in your size haha it can be confusing I hope you got the right one

    • How much were the rm?

  • thanks OP, bought one

  • Good price, just bought a pair

  • +2

    https://amzn.asia/d/eLppfoL

For anyone looking for Brown leather zip up Chelsea's, these are also a great price and can vouch for them as I own both black and brown versions.

    • Link doesn’t seem to work anymore for me.

      • Ah ok, link works for me but I know that doesn't necessarily mean it works for everyone. If you search in Amazon for 'Hush Puppies Men's Minnesota Chelsea Boot' the brown rub version should pop up. Hope this helps :)

        • Works for me, why is it worth the extra over the Chelsea's?

          • +1

@AncientWisdom: For me, a zip-up boot means it will be easier to get my foot into the boot without smashing the pull-tab, a rubber sole (rather than the synthetic on the Chelsea's), and insoles with extra foam padding are better overall in terms of build quality and foot support. Also, if you buy a pair, order a full size down from your normal size because they run large.

Here's a breakdown of synthetic vs. rubber soles; this may give you a better idea than what I can provide in terms of what you personally want to get out of the boot that best suits your needs.

            https://specificworkwear.com/synthetic-sole-vs-rubber-sole/

  • Does anyone know how these compare to the Hanger boots from HP?

  • -2

Buy 1 pair of HP, at 1/5 of MR price, and wear them about 5 years.
Buy 5 pairs of HP at MR price and wear them about 25 years.
Buy 10 pairs of Rivers at MR price, and wear them about 25 years.

  • Probably order 2 sizes down , they are too big

    • Hey mate. Exactly I am wondering. I never had HP but I did have Clarks. I wear US 8 Clarks but other sports/casual all at 9/9.5.

      • I normally buy 2 pairs of different sizes and return one. Unfortunately these ones I bought from ebay and cannot return. I wear US 10, these were like around 11 or 12. Buy at least a size down, anyway return is easy with Amazon.

  • The size just confuses me? Brand size in the chart?
Then under size name: is US size.

    • -1

I do not know about this particular named boots but for all my HPs: US size 1 bigger than UK/AU. i.e. If you want 8 AU/UK select US 9. Go to hushpuppies web site find it and sizes there.

  • +1

Made in China. I bought a pair of 'seconds' Mongrels for the same money off ebay.

  • There's plenty of LandCruiser 70/100/200/300s getting around with giant RM Williams logo stickers on the back window. Still waiting to see a Hush Puppies version.

  • I got these. Somehow they are not comfy.

  • +4

These boots are perfectly fine, comfortable and look good. At this price just chuck them and buy new ones when the heels wear out. Im currently wearing a pair after easy 2 years of almost daily wear. They're fine.

  • +1

Have been using this twice weekly for almost two years now and they are great. Can anyone recommend a nice shoe polish for this shoe please?

    • +1

Did you get the tan or the black?
For any black leather boot you want a shine on, I recommend Kiwi Parade Gloss.

Use a cloth wrapped around your finger, scoop out a little bit, work it into the leather focusing on any cracks/worn spots (the heat of your finger melts the polish in). Leave a matte finish whilst the polish soaks in. Use a buffing brush to bring it up to a shine.

  • Surely any cobbler can replace the heels/soles?

But, I suppose it may be more economical to chuck and replace.

    • +1

I took my pair to a cobbler when the heel sole peeled away.

He told me that the heel block is particleboard (veneered to look like timber), and he wouldn't bother putting a new sole onto it as, once it got exposed to the air humidity, the particleboard would be starting to swell/delaminate.

He said he could rebuild the heel block, but it would be cheaper to just replace the whole boot.

So these are boots you wear until you wear out and then you chuck them out.

  • Perfect timing, was needing to buy some new work shoes.
My current hush puppies have lasted me years. Great shoes.

    • If your current HPs have lasted for years, you might have grabbed one of the last pairs before they switched to low cost/short life manufacturing practices.

If you bought a pair in this deal, I'd be interested to see how the new pair stack up against the older pair and how long they last in comparison.

  • Does HP run small or big comparing with say Clarks?
I am a US 8 with Clarks. But for the sports/casual sort like Adidas/ASICS etc I am US 9-9.5.

  • +1

I bought a pair of these a couple of years ago and they barely lasted 6 months, a cheap pair I had from Target lasted longer. Had RMs since, about to reheel them for the first time.

  • What are people's thoughts on the BARED style Chelsea boot called Thallium?

  • awesome deal, i was about to buy some rm williams, but these are so much cheaper for the exact same boot.

    • +1

That's like choosing a VW Beetle over a Porsche because they're "the exact same car".

      • so i should get the rm williams instead? i can't figure out what to buy.

        • +1

If you're happy buying boots which you'll wear until you wear out and then chuck them, these'll do.

If you want a pair of boots which you wear in, and keep for years and years, resoling as needed, go RM Williams.

  • +1

DO NOT BUY. The build quality of Hush Puppies has taken a nose-dive. Obviously someone in HP's office has decided to ride the reputation into the ground, squeezing as much profit from it as they can on the way down.

The heel looks like timber, but is actually particleboard. Just the humidity in the air is enough to cause it to swell and delaminate within a couple of years. If it even gets a long sideways glance at water, it won't last nearly that long.

The rubber sole is good, but because it's glued to glorified sawdust, you're running a very real risk of peeling that sole off and taking a header. Ask me how I know.

In the opinion of the bootmaker I took my pair to, the costs involved in rebuilding them to a point where they'll last is more than the replacement cost.

If you needed a pair of shoes to wear for a one-off event, inside and in a dry environment, these might fit the bill. If you plan on using them any longer than that, think about investing in proper boots.

  • I had them . really uncomfortable. returned them to amazon

  • Bought these in June in the last sale.

Very happy with them so far for office use. I use walking shoes and then swap in the office so I think they would last for years.

    I'm 11.5 US which is 11.5 AUS I thought.

Anyway the US size matched my AUS size perfectly.

    Would buy again.

  • -1

    "Just buy RM williams".

They cost 4 times the price and a resole costs a fortune.

Im a good looking fox thats cut like a ice cube tray so i dont need over priced doctor martins.

  • Is Myers price matching?

  • Amazon description states: "4. These products are in UK sizes and their packaging is labelled as such. Please refer to the size chart (above) for conversion"
Yet in the drop down box for sizes it displays US.

    • Yep, got caught out. Just returning my pair and ordering an new one. Amazon chat promised to refund.

  • Was debating this or RM but in the end decided to go even higher in quality and splurge a whole $20 at K Mart lel:

    https://www.kmart.com.au/product/side-zip-boots-s160892/

  • Never had RMs but I've had a pair of Hushies for over 3-4 years and am super happy with them. For the price I say it's a win.

  • Has anyone received a shipment email? I have a feeling there are going to be quite a few cancelled orders.

    • Mine is arriving tomorrow. Being bundled with some stuff I bought earlier this morning at 6am

    • Amazon is usually quite good at managing their stock levels

  • Darn missed out, are these any good compared to RMs?
