I don't think ME Bank has the -flexibility- that ING Direct has, ie, of running a branch-less bank.

I suspect that ME Bank may have union ties (they as if the applicant is a union member… WHY?!?)

(OK, so ING Direct has at least 2 branches for all of AU… they -still- save heaps by -not- having costly branches.)

EDIT: Someone may have info to prove me wrong, ie, on branch-less banking @ ME Bank. I [may] stand corrected.

        • from http://www.mebank.com.au/personal/faqs/everyday_account.html… :

Can I open an EveryDay Transaction Account if I am not a member of a participating super fund or union?

Yes, if you meet the minimum account opening criteria, you can open an account.

          &

To be eligible to apply you must be:

          • An individual opening and using the account for personal use only
          • At least 16 years of age
          • An Australian citizen, an Australian permanent resident or an Australian resident for taxation purposes, with an Australian residential address
        • Are Paypal transactions eligible?

We have been with ME for the past 12 years - great to deal with, No fees ever and help is only a phone call away. After our experience, last year we set up a home loan with them for our son. As for branches, you can do deposits at any Post office.

    • We never rec;d the Debut Mastercard of the deal… How to make the 3 req'd MC purchases?

We were quick to de[psit $60 of our own monet, to be ready to make the 3 puurchases, but still don't have the req'd plastic card to make them with…

  • +1

it also entitles you to a free Oovie movie hire each month…

    • -2

      which everyone gets anyhow…!! Doh..!!

      • if you take up this offer, you get an additional free movie hire to what you get with your current credit cards

      • Everyone with ME or everyone with Mastercard?

        • -1

every credit card, so if you get a new card, you can get an extra movie…

          http://www.oovie.com.au/free/free-wednesdays/registers.html

        • Hang on a tic jv, any new cc can get a movie hire, not just from ME, you make it sound like ME did a deal with Oovie for a bonus hire on top of the standard deal open to anyone!

    • Where does it say about the oovie movie deal?

one movie, per card, per month…

(you just need a separate email for each card)

        • It's one day per month- how many movies can you watch in one day and why would you open a credit card just for that?

  • …Or support breast cancer research with a PINK Debit MasterCard and $10 Pink Card fee will be waived as well as getting $50. ME Bank donates 1 cent every purchase.

    • source for this?

edit: never mind, at end of t&cs

"^$10 Pink Card fee will be waived on new accounts opened between 15/09/12 - 30/11/12 "

  • does the bank have any physical branches?

    edit: appears not, use auspost

    • Don't know, but you can use Westpac ATMs and not incur fees.

    • One in 4000, a few in 3000, found none in 2000.

  • gee google is insidious. they worm they way into everything. why are googleapi scripts popping up in the middle of secure banking websites

    • +1

This is called "do no evil".

      • but it basically makes the site insecure because the whole sign up process utilises a script hosted by a 3rd party. they should be hosting it on their own website.

  • ME Bank (Members Equity) is a product of AGEST Superannuation (Aust Govt Employees Super Trust).
The super fund is great so would think their bank is on par?

  • That was wayyyy too easy!

Online verification with passport. No need to visit a branch or Australia Post

    Free money here I come!!

  • This is exactly like ING all over again! Good stuff!

  • So you get a transaction account and a credit card account in one and after making the three purchases just transfer the money from transaction to credit to cover it off?
I m worried about the costs of those credit transactions.

    • It's a DEBIT card, in which you pay using "CR" button, but it goes through the mastercard system.

This is exactly like the ING Deal a while back where if you opened an account they gave you $50-100.

The cost of the purchases are free, just go into coles and buy 3 x $1 lollies in 3 transactions. Easy as!

      • In the ING deal, were you given the $50 right after the account opened? So in this case I have to deposit some cash before I can make the purchase (or risk overdrawing fees)?

        • +1

Ah yep, true, but just deposit $5, go to coles and buy 3 cheap things and wait 2months.

For example if you were NOW to do the ING 5% thing, it would mean you have to make 10 x $100 transactions which means at least $1000 to get $50. Much much more effort.

        • Is there no minimum amount required for purchases at Coles/Woolworths on a debit card?

        • +1

No minimum as far as I can tell. Debit = Same as Credit, well uses the VISA or MASTERCARD systems
I often buy stuff for $1-3, because I dont have coins, and I hate coins. :)

  • I'm 17 … I verified using my passport but it's only 58% verified. I need either Electoral Roll or Phone Book proof which I can't provide …

    • I verified using passport and it worked 100%

Did you enter other details after you put in your passport number?

    • Yeah, entered all the details, only got 58% out of my Aussie Passport.

Lol I just entered my mom's detail for Electoral Roll and it went through.

EDIT: Well it's 'processing', leads me to a page 'GreenIDComplete.aspx' which doesn't seem to load so I guess I'll just wait for an email or something.

EDIT2: I didn't get any confirmation emails or anything, did my application go through? As I said above, it lead me to a non-working page so I don't know.

      • Lol I just entered my mom's detail for Electoral Roll and it went through.

You don't think they'll check it?

      • @Yanoflies I got an email from them with my application number etc right after I signed up and verified my passport. So I dunno about you.

It says "If you have any questions regarding your application, you can call us on 13 15 63 Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm, or Saturday 9am to 5pm (Melbourne time)." -If that's any help to you.

  • +1

How long for the $50 applied to the account?

    • +1

The T&C's has all the information, aka the small writing at the bottom of the ME offer page.
      Not hard to read. :P

    • On T/C it says, within 60 days of the account being opened. (provided you purchase stuff using credit botton 3 times within 30 days of account opening)

Well, please share an information on how quick you get yours. I imagine it could be much quicker.

  • +1

Does it hard to close account afterward?

    • +1

No idea. I think if you just call them up saying you want to close it is enough. Most banks do that. OR if you just leave the account with $0 balance they will just deactivate it after like 6 months or so. Ive had a few like that.

There is no law against having 10000 bank accounts, esp if they all have $0 fees.

    • i imagine you would arrange that over the phone

  • Really simple to apply. I like.

    • Yes. I've got to say that that was one of the cleanest and best bank applications I've ever done. I wish all of them were like that.

  • I am a long term customer of ME and have nothing but good things to say. Applied for a personal loan online recently and recieved status updates via SMS and a call when there was a query regarding details on my payslip.

Whole process took about a week and I was informed that the $150 loan establishment fee would wavied if loan was serviced by Everday transaction account which I opened and was happy to find I am also eligable for the $50 cashback and the free Pink Debit Mastercard.

  • +1
    1. The identity verification is a pain if you don't have an Australian passoport/driving license. If you want to go to Auspost, they require full name AND address to appear on documents. (The online autogenerated form requires address to be verified but generic auspost form on ME Bank website doesn't.) I ended up visiting State Office - just one proof of age card does it.

    2. MasterCard Debit! It is not bad at all. I had a hard time finding a free account with this card in order to fly Tiger with no booking fee. ME Bank gives me the answer.

  • I dont have a drivers licence, my phone number is not listed on White pages and I am not listed on electoral roll. Representative, any way I can apply for this deal? I entered tax file number and I don`t have any other options to finalise :(.

  • So does the PayPass transactions count as a 'credit' transaction or do you actually need to press the credit button at checkout?

    • +1

it does say you need to select and use the credit button

      • Agreed that the T&Cs specify pressing CR. But the exclusions don't specifically exclude Paypass, so a fair assumption can be made that PayPass counts automatically too.

        • PayPass = CR
Since it goes through the Mastercard network

Number 2. under 'SWITCH YOUR BANKING' on the right side of the page:

      "Paypass transactions are included."

I got my debit card today. 17/10/2012.
The clear card is pretty funky!

  • i wonder if you go through the self service at coles and do 3 credit purchases for 1 cent at the same time you will qualify still for the $50 bonus? also is there a account dormant fee?

  • Do the charges normally appear as debit even though you picked credit? Since it's a debit card it's correct right?

  • Applied, nice quick and easy, as others have said.

  • -2

Identity verification process is too hard. Should be easier like other banks.

  • Got the postal documents and card from ME today.
In my case the ID process was easy, they accepted all the standard form of ID, same as any bank, just better because all online.

  • Also got my card today. Was going to go deposit some cash into the account via AusPost but realised there is a fee for using Bank@Post. I was on the lookout for a fee free transaction account as a just in case kind of thing but I think ING is the winner by far!

Hopefully they aren't difficult upon account closure.

    • Yes exactly the same here - I was going to put cash in at Aus post, until I saw the $2.50 fee (at least ME bank makes it clear).
I do it all the time with ING and its great that its free.
I checked the Coles mastercard, and you can deposit at Aus post, but again with the fee.
ING must absorb the charge from Aus Post.
And the 5% paywave discount is the best.

  • They sent me two cards. Is that normal?
    Thanks.

    • Did you apply twice ?
      That may just explain it.
Did you get 2 seperate letters ?

  • Nope. Only 1 letter. But 2 cards sent on the same date. (ie. I was sent 3 mail items; 1 letter, 2 cards). Didnt apply twice. (although the cards do have different numbers).
A rang them up (to register for internet banking) and they told me it was a mistake and to cut up the card. When I did log into internet banking both cards were there except the mistake card wasn't linked to my account.

Anyways, I have electronically transferred $20 into the account.

When it goes in I will make 3 credit transactions and when they appear I will ring them up for the $50.

I will probably keep the account as I will feel more secure in using it instead of exposing my Credit Card to the internet all the time which has $26500 limit.

    • It will probably take a while for the $50 bonus to be credited.
T&C says up to 60 days.
"Customers will receive the bonus credit in their ETA within 60 days of the account being opened"
I will feel a bit guilty if I close this account without using it much, just to get the $50.
When I rang up to register, the lady was very helpful and nice.

  • It's been a while, any body has gotten their 50?

    • I think it hasn't been long enough yet. I've got a reminder set for Dec 12, which is when 60 days is up for me.

  • Noticed some saying "New ME Customers Only".
The terms and conditions include…… "Existing ME Bank customers who already hold an ETA on or prior to 19/09/12 are not eligible to participate"

I am an existing ME customer and just applied for the EveryDay Transaction Account (ETA), we already have a loan and ME savings account. I am expecting $50 for opening the ETA :).

    • Good stuff.

  • Has anyone got $50 from MeBank? I understand that in T/Cs it said 60 days from account opening but they could pay quickly like ING. Please share your story if you've got the money.

  • +1

Ive made quite a few transactions. And no $50 for me, yet. I would check the balance more often but I find their web logon interface annoying. In particular not being able to copy and paste my customer number.

    • I've just been sticking the card in the St George ATM near my work every so often…still no $50 for me, I made four transactions but haven't checked since about Tuesday.

  • The longer I wait, the more likely I shut you down after I get the $50, ME.

    FYI.

  • +2

This was posted on the 9/10, so it hasn't been that long.

Come back if you haven't gotten your money by the 10th of December.

  • +2

I just logged on to do some banking and found that the $50 had been credited to my account today.

    • +1

i got my $50 today too.

  • +1

Yep. Just checked. Got mine too.

  • +1

    i got paid today

transaction descriptions could be more verbose

a nifty feature which i noticed (and what other banks should do) is it lists declined transactions (eg insufficient funds) in the transaction statement, so you know if someone's been trying to charge your card

    eg M/C REJ - INSUFF. FUN-16:42

  • +1

Yup, got mine $50 today too.

  • +1

    Mine was just deposited too.
ME bank has the easiest sign up process,
and most helpful staff I have found.
    Thankyou.

  • +1

    Got mine as well.

  • $50 bonus received

  • Yay! Same here :)

  • opened for over 1 month already but haven't received $50! :(

    • 3 purchases pressing 'credit' on the debit MasterCard within 30 days?

  • Got my money too! YAY!

  • Do we need to make all 3 transactions before 30 Nov ?

I made 3 paywave transactions on

    27/11; 27/11 and 2/12

but haven't got the $50 yet.

how long usually after the last transaction we get the $50 ?

    • To receive the $50 credit, eligible customers must make three (3) purchases using their Debit MasterCard within the first 30 days of the account being opened.

  • Made my purchases all on the same day at the same time (self serve checkout) on the 13th of Nov and still haven't got the $50 :( I hope it comes - I am pretty sure I have adhered to all the terms and conditions.

  • still havent got mine. using paywave should be counted as Credit right??
I used paywave on all my transaction :0

    • I don't think paywave counts, you need to press the credit button on the eftpos terminal for it to work.

      • -1

Paywave/paypass transactions automatically go through as credit as they're processed by visa/mastercard, not eftpos.

    • still haven't got mine either. I rang them last week to check on it and they said it will be coming just didn't say when

      • Did you use paywave on your transactions? I'm not sure if they can distinguish between paywave and pressing credit. But then, ING direct can tell for their wave and save deal.

  • I made 3 transactions at different places pushing the credit button on the 11/10 and the $50 was credited to my account on the 20/11.

  • anyone got the $50 yet?
    spend 3 transaction on the 6/12 - 7/12.
    Still waiting for the credit.

    • Going by Warbuck's experience, it may take a month.
