  • Parental control software sounds like the kids use it to control the parents. If that's the case, no need, tantrums are free and abundant in our household. Happy to share around

Teach your kids. Have a healthy relationship with your kids. Give them the tools to make wise decisions.

Spying on them breaks your relationship and tells them that you don't trust them.

Will they do stupid shit? Of course. Like you did. But that is how we learn.

    Save your money. Set boundaries.

      Hard agree.

      Well said sir

    • More interested in the screen time limits than the spying but yeah, good advice.

      • +1

Exactly. The basic version is more about the screen time

Good sentiments, but a little naive. It depends on individual circumstances.
With one of my kids, I put some restrictions on his phone & laptop after all else failed. It was a PITA for me, but did help break some bad habits in a way that "frank talks", periods with device physically confiscated, and assorted sticks and carrots did not. Addiction is not easy to fix.

Sometimes, "spying" helps build trust - see the Cold War. It can show when agreements are being kept.
Trust is eroded when you don't tell them what you are monitoring. And get caught.
I also feel better knowing my kids are not using the more toxic apps like Tiktok or Instagram.

But what is this commercial software doing that free services from Apple/Microsoft/Google do not? Are they going too far?

    • @DivZero, good luck to you if you think what you said is feasible.

Teach your kids - every kid are different and you must committed yourself and be a model to your kids. Are you willing to do that ?

Have a healthy relationship with your kids - I guess everyone know that but how? It's all theory. Every kid and every family are different. Most parents and families are struggling in many aspects in life at present. Tell me what's definition of healthy.

Give them tools to make decisions! - how can parents give something they don't even have? What tools? Where to buy? Bunnings or Officeworks? Actually, many books offer good advices if only parents have time to read them.

Spying on them breaks your relationship and tells them that you don't trust them - that is viewing from one angle. In stead, the software provides a perfect platform to parents and teens to learn mutual respect and self discipline. That's one way to build trust and relationships.

I agree that we as a human being, we all made mistakes. We need to learn to face the ugly side of ourselves and help kids to do that too as we all need help! Seek help is an important key to turn the situation around.

Parents spend load of money on useless stuffs, please spend something on your beloved kids. They are yours and they worth much more than bargain stuffs.

  • I've used Qustodio in the past, but got fed up with its constant failures. it wouldnt do what it is supposed to do.
Changed over to Kaspersky Kids, although not exactly bug free, its much cheaper option !

Depending on your needs and kids ages - if we're talking Android specifically - Google's 'Family Link' app is free, easy to setup (requires your kid to have a Google account) and provides good basic functionality IMO - set screen limits, prevent installing apps, 'find my device', see their location, remote lock and view some basic usage info.

Been a user for many years BUT all stop working lately on multiple devices and OS, save your money and get something else.

  • Anyone found a windows version similar to family link? Hardest part is stopping them gping to YouTube as they find a way atound it and than school says need access as part of homework… sighs
