Anbernic RG35XX Mini Retro Handheld Game Console US$40.79 (~A$62.55) Delivered @ Data Frog FCS Store via AliExpress

1080

Looks to be an ATL, picked this up a month back for $64 and it's a great little machine after flashing Garlic OS instead of the stock FW.

Plays NES, SNES, SMS, MD, GB, GBC, GBA flawlessly, I've also tried a few PS1 games and they seem to work pretty well.

Appears to be available in all colours. More info here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWLRWEooqd8

    • Anbernic RG35XX Mini is supposed to be marginally more comfortable to hold, I prioritize that.

  • +5

For anyone buying this I highly recommend replacing the MicroSD Card ASAP.

    Deal post for a cheap reputable MicroSD Card - 64GB $7 or 128GB $13

  • What's one that plays everything up to Dreamcast / Game Cube?

    • +1

The AYN Odin 2 is pretty awesome.

Or then you start going into Steam Deck territory.

Both options are obviously much more costly than the RG35XX though.

    • +1

Retroid Flip is a decent option

  • Cheapest price yet?

  • Where can you download the 128gb room packages complete, hard to find. Them one by one, the ones in the sd cards are not complete, two many dupes and no artwork

    • +2

      sail the high seas matey

    • +4

Google 'Tiny Best Set Go' as a good starting point maybe.

    • I find https://vimm.net/vault is good for single roms
The full set has a lot of crap you'd never play anyway.

    • +1

Tiny Best Set Go yeah, or Done Set. Both on Internet Archive.

      • hey, do these come with artwork? the 35xx and 36s that i bought all came preloaded with them (contrary to what some of the youtube guides say)

  • How come it comes up as $43 usd for me delivered?
Is there a code or something?

  • +2

I have to laugh at the AliExpress page suggesting this is 76% off the normal price. Nobody ever paid $230+ for these even when they first came out!

  • +2

Make sure to stack with the upsized 15% cashback:

  • Ah they're back in stock at this price, spotted them the other day when I ordered an R36S from the same seller for this price, then they were out of stock.

Got an RG35XX a few weeks ago for a similar price, it's awesome

    • I got a R36S today for just under OPs price today. I feel like I got a deal, what do you reckon? Which do you prefer?

      • My R36S hasn't arrived yet. I also got it for around $62. I really love the RG35XX, hoping the R36S will do a few things that it can't, like PS analog stick games and maybe some arcade games that the RG35XX struggles with

      • I got my r36s delivered this week $65, I much prefer having the analogue sticks.

        Looks like it's down to $60 now - https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005006152991376.html?ug_edm_…

    • Recently purchased two R36S's for the kids for Xmas, have seen a fair bit of info on how to upgrade the RG35XX etc but not much on the R36S, is there a go to guide(s) for getting the best out of this unit?

Also, couldn't get the wifi on it to pick up any networks at all.

  • good deal.

  • Got one of these a few weeks ago, pretty good little rig. If you have large hands it can be awkward to hold especially if you have to use the shoulder buttons on the rear of it.

  • Got one of these last time it came up on Ozb. has an issue with screen flickering, and it draining the battery really fast. Sent video of the issue to seller on Aliexpress, was offered a 50% refund and to keep the item, or 100% refund upon delivery of the return back in china. seemed like lots of hoops to jump through to get the 100% refund, so went with the 50% and thought i could potentially open it up and check the connections to the battery.. (felt like a battery issue).. was not successful. have a $35 brick now.

  • Any chance you can do multi-player? I know this doesn't have WI-FI but surely there is a way to connect 2 devices together?

    • +1

No gameboy color link cables for these things… you need to go for a wifi device if that is what you want.

  • The R36S is much better value, but a little more finnicky to update the OS. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JazW_Rf0Ko

    • Lol it's actually quite easy easier than the RG35xx for me when I did it the other day.

      • For one you flash an SD card. For the other you flash an SD card and replace one file.

        Ok then….

        • You're saying it's finicky. It's not.

I have both devices and to get me up and running with GarlicOS took longer than R36S. Big deal.

        • +1

You're not wrong. But it's replacing a single file.

One thing that is finicky though (maybe only because I'm new to this) is that tiny set isn't made for arkos so can't just copy it straight across as is.

          • @zorrt: It's not you, it's definitely the folder structure for these OS's. Wish there was an easier way to copy them into their individual folders, and I find myself referring to the folder structure guides online cos I can't remember what particular system corresponds to what abbreviation etc.

            • @adrianhughes1998: anyone have any success backing up the roms from the stock sd card of the r36s ? My rom folders appear empty when presented to windows, but if I used r36s's configuration->file manager, I can see them.

              • @kevsta: You talking about EASYROMS showing up in windows as a drive?

                • @adrianhughes1998: Yes, EASYROMS is showing up and assigned to a drive letter G:, but roms in /roms, /roms2 inside the emulator sub directories aren't visible so I can't copy them to the pc. Tried Diskgenius, diskinternals linux reader and still shows up empty in these directories. It's got me stumped.

                  • +1

                    @kevsta: It's probably a symlink.

                  • +1

@kevsta: Sorry can't help , I can see all the files for me in windows 11

                    • +1

@adrianhughes1998: No worries, appreciate you and paintoad's help so far. I've got a work around, and its using arkos's file manager to copy from /roms2 to /roms. Only then are the roms visible to windows 10/11 file explorer. Thinking it may have been an arkos advanced option that I clicked, and got to a point of no return.

                      • +1

@kevsta: No worries glad you got a solution, yeah arkOS freaked me out, I got stuck in the file manager when I first received it and couldn't exit. Thought I'd deleted important system files haha

  • Best deal currently on the MIYOO Mini Plus?

    • +1

I think this is still valid - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/816137

Actually coupon code looks to have expired so about $7 or so more than it was previously.

      • Thank you

        • +1

Use code BF8 which still seems valid, that gets it down a bit still - I'm getting about $68.48

          • @Wuggle: Thank you, I like the Mini but also just noticed another device. I am going to order one of the Miyoo Mini Plus, RG35XX or R36S today/tomorrow as they seem awesome. I posted again below for some opinions, if you happen to know :)

  • I'm new to this and now want one of these, watched a few videos, but would appreciate advice from someone who knows better than I do :)

    Miyoo Mini Plus v RG35XX v R36S??

I don't really mind about HDMI, I have enough TV devices, so will always be a handheld.

I do like the idea of Wifi on the Mini - the R36S I know less about, other than it's more powerful and can therefore play N64 games etc. This would be a nice bonus, but not necessarily required.

    HELP!!

    • +3

      RG35XX PLUS model newly released

      has wifi

      • Does that basically mean the best of both worlds? I would get the dual SD, better size/comfort factor, and Wifi. Will have a look into this.
        Thank you

        • +3

Yeah, but you could almost buy 2 of these for the price of one Plus

          • @chromium: this gives me solace after buying this deal at lunch today before realising a new one just launched hah

    • +4

MatD88 - If you are after sub $70 than I would probably personally go the Miyoo Mini Plus over the RG35XX as you will not regret having wifi on the device.

I have both but the Miyoo Mini Plus always gets used more because of that reason.

However saying that I have just ordered the new RG35XX Plus which now adds wifi and improves on the power - Still however waiting for review copies to get out there so no reviews to confirm how much better this new model is as yet.

As for the R36S I do not have one of them and probably will not pick one up as obviously I have lots of other devices that can do what that can do already - see Retro Game Corps review that he did on the R36S very recently if you have not already seen it - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JazW_Rf0Ko

He does have a few issues with it but it is supposed to be the cheapest option, at least in US$, but not sure to be honest if you would find it that much cheaper than RG35XX of Miyoo Mini Plus to get it to Australia.

      • +1

        Amazing info - thank you!

I am basically now between the Mini Plus & RG 35XX Plus. I would like you said go the Mini Plus over the standard RG35XX as I really like the Wifi.

The features of the RG 35XX Plus look great in the official video I watched so I'll do some more research and then decide between these 2.

Did you buy yours from the official website? Looks to be ~$107 incl. shipping vs $62.55 for the above RG35XX.

        • +1

I ordered the RG35XX Plus direct from Anbernic's site via paypal and with a few dollars overseas charges, came in at A$111.04. No doubt they will drop over time but have this bad addiction of buying these straight away every time they release something new - I should probably start my own youtube channel reviewing them although retro game corps is your best source for reviews of these things. I believe he hopes to have a RG35XX Plus review out in the next few days.

Personally I am not sure if this is your first retro handheld if the RG35XX Plus is worth a $40 upgrade from say the Miyoo Mini Plus deal (or the RG35XX if you can go without wifi) but I have no doubt many suppliers are now dumping their RG35XX stock in preparation for the Plus model getting more widely available.

Probably depends a lot on what era/system you are looking to mainly play on the device. For example, playing Gameboy Color games is going to be a near identical experience as regards emulation performance on most of these devices.

          • @Wuggle: WOW - you really are into your handhelds, but I don't blame you and knowing myself, I'll buy one of these and then want a $600 one in a few months…

Typically, how long would it take the something like the RG35XX Plus to drop its price to around $70? Would we be talking a month or two, or 12 months. At $44 shipped (first time purchaser + 4.5% cashback) it's hard to pass up the RG35XX just to see if I will use something like this enough or not, even without the Wifi and Joypads, which I'd ideally like.

      • +3

R36S can be had for the same price as the RG35XX in the OP from the same seller.

I've got one on the way. More powerful than the RG35XX and has analogue sticks. Seems like good value and has some good reviews

No wifi, but I have no interest in WiFi. You can plug a dongle in if you really need it for updates, etc

        • +2

There's so many of these that all seem good options; the more videos I watch, the more confused I get haha!!

          • +1

@MatD88: I'm also waiting on delivery of an 'AYN Odin 2 Pro' - I'm hoping that device might cure me of my addiction of buying other lower powered handhelds. That is obviously in a different range in both power and price to the Anbernic and Miyoo devices but then you probably wouldn't need anything else….

Unfortunately though there probably isn't one device to rule them all as dependent on what you want to play, the handheld's form factor, controllers, screen ratio and resolution can make one device much better for one system than another.

            • @Wuggle: I was tempted for odin pro2 but just bought a Gamesir X2 pro and used that with my phone which is sd870. When I upgrade my phone the Gamesir will just carry across too

              • +2

@adrianhughes1998: Gamesir X2 Pro looks good but I just personally like to keep my phone and gaming devices as two separate things…. probably because I equate my phone more to work than play.

        • A lot of bad reviews from that seller. Everyone is saying they've received a RS35 Plus, which is apparently the same thing, but not really what is being sold in the advertisement, which is never good.

          • @MatD88: R35 Plus and R36S are the same thing I believe.

Which seller are you talking about, Datafrog?

    • Miyoo Mini Plus, I know people rave about its wifi feature. However, the issue I have is that mine currently doesn't see any wifi network. I don't know whether it is due to I need to update the firmware or I received a dud unit. On the Web, apparently some files need to be replaced to get it to work.

      • I had this issue at first with both my Miyoos, replaced the included micro SD and updated to Onion and that fixed it. Wifi is so helpful to have once it's working - getting cover images is so much easier.

  • +1

Finally taken the plunge and grabbed one. Thanks OP for eventually wearing me down…

Let's see if megaman one still holds up ;-)

  • I bought the R36S over this the other day for the joysticks. Did I mess up?

    • +2

Not at all. R36s is more powerful and has analogue sticks
      https://youtu.be/1JazW_Rf0Ko?si=eSPyVF4New_V-VTw

    • +2

No, the R36S was a good buy.

    • +3

R36S, RG35XX, Miyoo Mini Plus, and numerous other clones out there…. not much between them at the A$50-A$100 type range. As long your expectations are in check and you are looking at the 16bit game console era and earlier stuff you will have fun with any of these devices.

  • +3

good for kids Xmas present? I would guess so ! old games rock

    • +2

I think so too…. but dependent on their age a more likely response is 'Can it play Minecraft or Fortnite?'

      • my points would be exactly to show them older games - Minecraft is cool and all, but there is so much more out there, they deserve to know all those old school goodies

        • +1

Agreed although not sure 'Old school goodies' was the term my kids used when giving their reaction to some classic Atari 2600 titles I forced them to play :-)

  • +4

I was playing this on the plane and the dude beside me had a jealous look and watched me complete a TMNT arcade run. He had the "can i try this" look.

    • Don't tell him about these handhelds or AliExpress.

But of even higher importance, don't tell him about ozbargain.

  • Just bought one and the price has come down to $48 plus tax so $53.** posted

    • New/returning customer discount - US$31.56 (~A$48.13) + GST.

      • Ahhh I’m new so cool for me

  • Tried 4 times buying with different sellers using PayPal including this seller.

Sale was closed 4 times due to “security reasons”. Was charged out of my bank account all 4 times.

Told I’d get refunded - after a week still not so used PayPal to get a refund.

Even tried using no vouchers on aliexpress.

Maybe PayPal is as the problem but I don’t want to risk it with just credit card.

Bought last week on eBay with a voucher for $75 delivered

    • Have you previously made new accounts repeatedly to take advantage of the new user bonus? AliExpress hand out bans for that.

      • No not at all. Doing a google it sounds pretty common too u less it’s just to do with me using PayPal.

Like it’s the order is closed due to security why charge and take my funds

  • How does this compare to the RGB30? I have been tossing up between that and the Miyo Mini Plus.

    • RGB30's chipset is more powerful, and the screen is very different, of course.
Miyoo Mini Plus has OnionOS, which is very handy and comfortable.
Depends on what you want to play and what experience you're after, I suppose.
I personally already have a Miyoo Mini Plus, and have ordered an RGB30.

      • Where did you get your RGB30 from?

        • Aliexpress, Powkiddy Official Store.

        • If anyone is looking for an RGB30, the black is on sale below (2 left):
          https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006166784044.html

Mine came down to $88.63 with the 'BF8' code on checkout.

          • @VlVh: Hmm tempting, the 1:1 screen is interesting. Could be good for vertical games

Edit: damn you, just bought one after watching a video showing they are great for vertical arcade games lol

Already have an R36S on the way as well as my existing RG35Xx. These things are addictive. Just cheap enough to impulse buy

Could have bought one $200 one instead of 3 cheap ones though

    • I have a RGB30 and although the screen ratio has its merits, my unit was fully offset by the poor quality control from Powkiddy whereby the battery drained ridiculously quickly and only got worse to the point of now only working if plugged in and on charge with the USB cable. Check around the internet and you will see I am not alone with
many others experiencing similar problems with this model.

I have complained to Powkiddy who seemed to want to use every excuse possible to avoid me returning the unit for a refund. After 2 weeks of frustration with their support I am now disputing the transaction with my credit card company to get a refund for being supplied faulty products that the seller will not rectify. I should have purchased through paypal for better protection and ease of disputing it but oh well, live and learn.

My lesson being that I will never buy anything from Powkiddy again.

      • That is exactly why I paid via Paypal for my RGB30.
Let's see how it goes when I get it.

    • Having tried both:

Miyoo was way too small for my hands.

RGB30 has a great screen and form factor.

I kept the RGB30 and gifted the Miyoo to someone else :)

  • Thanks Op, Just bought it for my niece for Xmas. Paid $53.79 with a new account hope it helps someone else. Cheers

  • got one from the last dealand also had a Miyoo mini v2. The d-pad is worst than the miyoo and is not always reliable. For example, in fighting games I could do a super move to the left but not to the right. If what you play doesn't require precision then it's more than fine though.

  • Been waiting for a deal on these! Cheers

  • Kick butt, will use to supplement my retropi arcade

  • What size SD card would I need for use with NES SNES MEGA DRIVE MASTER SYSTEM AND PS1, MAME games?

    • 128gb is enough

      • Thanks

  • What kind of BS is this?

Placed first order, account charged then noticed this 'We had to close this order due to account security concerns. Please place an order again later, or remove the coupon and try again.'

Tried it again, same thing - down $106 with nothing appearing in 'Orders' under my account.

Has this happened to anyone before? How long do I have to wait?

    • You will need to create a brand new account with a different email address, phone number and different credit card. Your old account has been banned.
