        • Mine says it arrives tomorrow (Perth).

        • Amazon just opened a new warehouse in Perth.
          Hopefully, it gets better.

          • @Pest85: Weirdly it looks like they took the money yesterday - which tends to mean its been shipped - but the order listing still says:
            Arriving Fri, 29 Dec…

  • +1

Hi all, this or eero 6+?

  • +3

Would you just get the S7 from GG commercial at $157? Specs looks slightly better. Anyone know?

  • Hi, do I just connect this to the NBN box? Or I still need the tradition router like VX220 in between? Thanks

    • Which nbn do you have? FTTP or FTTC will plug straight in, FTTN you'll still need your router (but in "Bridge" mode)

      • What about HFC, will that be ok?

        • +1

Plug in the Deco to the nbn HFC NTD.

  • is this wifi 6? I really don't know the terminology.

    • +2

No, these are WiFi 5. In real world usage, you'll likely not know the difference between 5 and 6. If you think you might, get something WiFi 6 instead.

  • Wish I grabbed the $100 Bunnings ones

  • also on OP's link is "TP-Link A1300 Dual-Band Whole Home Mesh Wi-Fi System, Connects Over 100 Devices, Seamless Roaming (Deco M5 (3-Pack)) + 8-Port 10/100Mbps Desktop Switch (LS1008)" = https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0C48FFMG1?th=1
for $174. same 3x AP bundle, plus 10/100 switch for the extra $15 .. seems OK on top? unless it's a crappy switch .. anyone got experience with that?

    • just realised the specs as i hit submit . .10/100! yuck

      • +2

True, 10/100 switch should be illegal now.

  • Hi, could someone please help with advice on which extender would work best with the TP-Link Deco AX5400 VDSL Whole Home Mesh WiFi 6 Modem Router. We have one area in the house dropping out.

    • +1

Pretty much any of the TP-Link Deco mesh range should be fine - they're designed to work together.

The ones from this deal are a lower spec wifi version than your router BUT if you're only trying to boost a single room, that might not matter to you.

      Something like (https://www.amazon.com.au/TP-Link-AX1800-Whole-Wi-Fi-System/…)

would probably work fine. And if it doesn't, Amazon are cool about returns.

    • +1

Don't get a TP-Link Wi-Fi extender. Purchase another TP-Link Deco to form a mesh Wi-Fi network. As for which Deco depends on how many ethernet ports, speed and how much Wi-Fi coverage you need.

  • +4

Had this 3 pack for over a year now. First on FTTN using a Telstra Smart Modem Gen2 in bridge then upgraded to FTTP on 250/25 atm.
This just works. Can't think of a single issue I've had. Set up and forget.

    • +3

You said it in 3 words: This just works.

    • I was using Telstra Gen2 on old FTTN (25/10 basic plan) without any issues for years while my modem was upstairs on double story home (that's the only place I have connection).
Upgrade to FTTP (100/20 plan) recently and NBN box is now installed on ground floor in one of the corner room.
Still using same Telstra Gen2 modem with same settings and the performance is worst. Buffering issues now and then and looks like its dropping off frequently.
Not sure if it's the location as the same modem was working absolutely fine while on slow plan installed upstairs.

Would a mesh system like this is a must for FTTP?
I already got eero6+ (1 unit) from the provider, but I haven't opened it yet as I guess 1 unit is not sufficient for my house size (5 bed) and will need to buy another unit if I want to get the mesh system, another unit will cost me around $170.
Rather I should buy this system with 3 units at the same price?

      • +1

As the modem is now in a corner of house I guess it's struggling to reach everywhere now.
This should make a big dufference. Plug one into your NBN box and go from there the app walks you through the set up. Although OOS atm, getting something like this from Amazon you can always return for free if doesn't meet your requirements.

  • I have an old orbi AC2200 i believe. Almost 7 years old. Thoughts on upgrading to this for speed and stability? My orbi seems to drop out every now and then?

  • Does TP Link mesh support wired backhaul when plugged in to a non-mesh router?

  • Ive got the tplink M9 mesh & has worked fantastic over the past 3 years

  • My old man who has NBN Fixed Wireless got this. Nobody could get it working, even with the help of a friend who had the exact same on their Fiber NBN. I had a crack and failed. Couldn't find any instructions that worked (i've setup dozens of home networks for friends/family). Must be something unique about the NBN fixed wireless modem we overlooked as that is the only component nobody had experience with. Wish he would just get Starlink.

    • Nobody could get it working, even with the help of a friend

Did you set it up as router or wireless AP?

      • Attempting Router. Door stop now.

    • It's just ethernet out from the nbn FW NTD or FTTP NTD to the Deco and configure the Deco to your ISP requirements. Sometimes it can take at least 30 minutes for the replacement router to get an IP. Does he still have the Deco?

      • Yeah the box is a door stop now. The Deco setup APP just would not talk to the NTD. I used to have a Deco myself before i went Netgear Orbi. His Fixed Wireless is pretty crap anyway so its not much loss.

        • +1

I'll send you setup instructions if you want. Who is his provider?

nbn FW speed and range upgrades are in the works. Hopefully it helps.

          • +1

@Twix: Ill have to check, its been a while, thank you.

  • No VLAN tagging or forwarding, if that's your jam. (supports ISP VLAN eg.TPG)

  • I’ve got a 3 pack of M5s from a year or two ago. Pretty solid except don’t like how you can’t have separate ssid’s for 2.4 and 5ghz (unless you use the guest network for that). Parental controls are fairly good.

I’m getting 1000/50 (1gbps) fibre soon - is it worth getting this as I do need to expand coverage on large double brick - I will have cat6 wired backhaul to all of the M5s which I believe operate at gigabit speed; but will I be stuck on 4th gear rather than 5th for all the wifi devices due to the 867mbps max speed? (iPhones, Google tv etc)?

    • You would need wifi 6 (Deco X95 is the top model) at least. If money is not an issue get wifi7 for future proof.

  • I've got Aussie BB FTTC with the NetComm NF20MESH. My house has 3 bedrooms, so if I was to buy this, do I replace the exisiting modem with it or to expand the wifi signal?

Also bedroom 3 at the back has like 1 bar at times, so when needed can Bedroom 3 Deco M5 be turned on to improve the signal when required? I'm sure I don't need to use all three, but I'll save the third for when the time comes.

    • do I replace the exisiting modem with it or to expand the wifi signal?

You can replace the NetComm and use the TPLink as router or you can also setup the TPLink as wireless AP.

    • Plug in the Deco to the nbn box. This assumes you don't use the Aussie BB home phone from the NetComm NF20MESH. If you do the Deco setup is different.

Turn on Deco number 3 at anytime. You can always try get $50 for it.

  • I have FTTP. My NBN box is connected to a wireless router that has 3 x RJ45 plugs that go off into various parts of the house (multi-story).

If I buy these and plug them into the RJ45 jacks on the wall (e.g. 1 on ground level, 1 on level 1, 1 on level 2), will this effectively act like having 3 more wireless routers?

My current one does get to all parts of the house, but obviously slower in some areas.

    Any help appreciated

    • Yes you can, what you said above.
OR NBN box to M5 Deco Main via RJ45, then M5 Deco Main (1) to M5 Deco (2) via RJ45, then M5 Deco 2) to M5 Deco (3) via RJ45.
      This diagram will help you

      https://www.tp-link.com/au/support/faq/1794/

      • NBN box to M5 Deco Main via RJ45, then M5 Deco Main (1) to M5 Deco (2) via RJ45, then M5 Deco 2) to M5 Deco (3) via RJ45.

I'm not sure this would work. Where the NBN box is, I have a wall plate with 3xRJ45. In the rooms, there is only 1xRJ45 each, so I wouldn't be able to ethernet backhaul between M5 units as there is only 1x RJ45 jack on the walls.

I think what I have in mind is actually more like this - the router is the 'centre' and that goes out to each of the 3 decos

        https://i.ibb.co/2kCHk3n/deco.png

        Would it work?

Does one have to be a 'main' unit?

        • Won't work.

          • @kml22: is there something that will work for what I am trying to achieve?

Based on my research I'm after wireless acess points? And these decos are not wireless access points?

            • @89tnp: Oh..you want wireless, sorry I thought you wanted wired backhaul? if that is the case then, your existing router is connected to the M5 Main via RJ45, then the other 2 M5 will wireless off the M5 main, that will work for sure.

              • @kml22: Any advantage to connect the other 2 m5s to the router via rj45? I would imagine stronger wifi signal?

        • I used that diagram before with FTTN, the Deco will have to be set as Access Point mode. You may need to turn off wifi on your router to avoid interference with Deco wifi. (Yes, you will have 2 wifi networks one from your router and one from the Deco)

I would remove your router from the network and use the Deco set in router mode since you have FTTP. (That's what I'm doing at the moment)

          • @BlackCaviar2016: So NBN > main deco > other 2 decos via wifi?

            • @89tnp: I am not an network expert, but can't you do something like this…
NBN > main deco > deco 2(using RJ45 using on level 1) > deco 3 via wifi (as you won't be able to connect this to main through RJ45)

So in this case, one of the deco is using wired backhauling while other will be on wifi, better then having both on wifi backhauling
Again, not an networking expert so not sure if this can work, but worth a try

              • @hothot: so the other 2 units have to go back to the main deco?

It sounds like what I actually am after is 3 x main decos then?

            • @89tnp: Yes

  • I have this set for more than 3 yrs. Been using it with FTTN, FTTC and now with FTTP nbn on both wireless and wired backhaul. It's rock solid but it's Wifi 5 (wifi 6 doesn't exist back then). Paid $249 for it.

  • 3 left guys, you can do it. Buy now, think later.

  • and it's gone….

  • My neighbour sold me a brand new one for $25, he got two from Costco/Bunnings a while back for $25 each, these things are amazing especially the mobile app and parental controls

  • How is this router (AC1300 WIFI bandwidth) compared to the below (AC4000 wifi bandwidth) router?

    https://www.tp-link.com/au/home-networking/wifi-router/arche…

On paper, 4000 Mbps looks much better than 1300 Mbps in terms of wifi bandwidth.

    1300 Mbps wifi speed
    -400 Mbps on 2.4 GHz
    -867 Mbps on 5 GHz

    vs AC4000 (4000 Mbps Wi-Fi speed)
-1625 Mbps on both 5 GHz bands and
-750 Mbps on 2.4 GHz band

  • wow so cheap. compare with eero brand, 1 unit for $150
    is eero good?

  • Bought this 3 years ago for $193

  • +2

Just be aware that there has been an ongoing issue with these units whereby you lose all access to your LAN if your internet connection goes down

Have a scan through this TP-Link forum post that's been active for over 2 years for info - looks like it still hasn't been fixed

    • Hmmm… yet again I post something that may be useful to check out and it gets negged. Wonder which of the trolls I've upset enough to have them continue this juvenile stupidity.

Sometimes wish all votes showed the user name, not just the positive ones.

      • They fear retribution towards the neggers so they withhold their names. I think if it starts showing names then there will be less neggers.

I appreciate your info though and I counter the neg with a +.
P.S. Don’t let those negs get to you or the need to feel unnecessarily proud when receiving +s. Ozb is just like any other online community after all.

Nothing I read from keyboard warriors gets to me - skin's too thick for wasting my time with them.
Just makes me wonder what mental process they go through, if any.

    • I read your posted article, and thanks for sharing.
I do find it's strange where the router failed to allocate IP address to the Deco when their is no connection, sound like some dodgy router to me. Regardless, router should always allocate IP address regardless.

      • I do find it's strange where the router failed to allocate IP address to the Deco when their is no connection, sound like some dodgy router to me.

I always thought that phrase 'it's not a bug, it's a feature' was just a figure of speech until I came across this response from TP-Link…

Regarding the issue you mentioned, it’s normal that you won’t have access to the NAS when the main Deco is disconnected. The main Deco does require an internet connection to decide the role of its two Ethernet ports. Once it gets internet connection from one Ethernet port, the port will become the WAN port automatically. If the WAN port is disconnected, the main Deco will keep searching for a connection and won’t decide which port is WAN & which port is LAN until it gets an internet connection.

  • Did anyone in Melbourne get this deal and no longer require it?

  • Hey team - I bought one of these kits, and ended up digging a spare AP out of my "box of stuff", so I no longer require it. The item is still 100% in original Amazon delivery box .. anyone in Sydney interested in taking it off my hands? Happy to provide pix if interested.
Will hand over for same price as purchase - i can drop it to CBD on Fri 13/1 or Mon 16/1.
