What does this need extra to use as a NAS?

    • more storage

    • Just grab an external jbod enclosure, some disks and you're good to go

      • +1

Ok. Thank you. So then just have to check if the connector throughput to this PC is good enough.

        • Will be fine to use with a QNAP TR-004 or dc008

@ONEMariachi: $400 just for that enclosure. Might as well just buy a 4 bay NAS instead.

            • @Aureus: Look into it a bit more. It has hardware RAID built in, also closer to $350 in most places. Not many 4 bay NAS you're getting for that price, and the same quality as QNAP, also pointless if they're using a optiplex head for it.

              • @ONEMariachi: I wasn't able to find it that cheap.

Either way you are paying minimum $800 for the desktop + enclosure. IMO for that price you are better off just getting a NAS.

                • +1

@Aureus: Depends on the use case. Current gen of NAS can't handle plex as well. My ds923+ is no good for it now taht they moved away from Intel and quicksync/gpu. This combined with a DAS will be significantly more capable than any NAS on the market currently.

Or maybe ICY BOX IB-3640SU3 can get it for ~$215

          • @mudguppy1: Got one of these running off a i3 Nuc 7th gen and it works a treat

    • I wouldnt get a micro as a nas. Wait for at least a SFF or full size. At least you will have space to put all those loose 3.5" disks in. Install unraid, have a SSD as a cache

i7-9700 is still a great CPU in this day and age as it is only marginally slower than i3-13100 but I really struggle to justify spending $440 for used desktops, especially for SFF.

    • +3

      Same,,,Cant justify 440 may be 350?

    0 upgrade path
Minimal benefit over much cheaper i5 versions
