10/15% cheaper with code BDEC10 or BDEC15 on The Good Guys eBay

postage makes the bargain less impressive. Still get about 9 dollars off though.

      • Can click n collect

        • Yeah as long as the petrol and time spent makes it worth it. Very few people in regional Australia are within a 30 min drive of a GG store. But for sure if you're in urban Australia why not click and collect.

      Came here to share this.

Unless you know how to set up an alternate launcher, think twice about getting a Fire streaming device.

      • How do I flash another OS onto the Cube?

        • +2

you buy a different streaming box

          • +1

@0jay: …until they all do it.

I have 4k max boxes through the kids room, bedroom, lounge. My needs are simple.
            - Stream big services (Netflix etc.)
            - Stream free services.
            - Play from Windows SMB share.
            - Play from USB drives formatted with FAT/FAT32/ExFat/NTFS.

I'm at a loss as to what my next devices will be. The Firesticks do the job but Amazon looks set to ruin them. Googles have known issues and also wouldn't put it past them to start locking the devices down. I would rather never see another movie again than buy an Apple or Nvidia device. The off brand Chinese boxes are inconsistent and known to sometimes carry hard to detect malware. Even going to a Windows 11 box, forcing updates at the wrong time and horrible remote integration makes it a non-option. And I don't want to spend my time hand installing graphics drivers or codecs on a Linux box. It's all gone to hell in a handbasket.

            • +3

@syousef: apple and nvidia are the two least inclined to cram their interface with ads and baked-in data harvesting

buy whatever you want but clearly google/amazon are fundamentally motivated to intrusive advertising and profiling, generic yumcha boxes to indiscriminate harvesting

              pick y poison

    • +8

Thanks for that you've saved me $109.

    • +12

You pay for a device. They still shove ads at you.

i.e. you don't really own the device, you're just renting it from the supplier under a contract they can alter at any time, in their favour.

    • +4

They’ve started playing ads between every episode of shows you watch as well.

      • you are joking???

      • -6

That depends which streaming service you use via the box. Also this ad at start up is a complete nothing burger, just press home or down once.

        • Absolutely. Once you know how the thing operates it's half a second to navigate down to your recent apps and kick things off. I bought the fire cube a couple of months ago at this price and it's a beast.

    • +1

Gotta love how the site informs you about the latest ads update, while bombarding you with said ads lol

    • +1

You can disable the video ads in settings.

      • +1

Apparently they still show as static ads

        • +7

Yes it will show you a static ad, but its of upcoming tv shows, or Kayo sports. It's not product ads etc, they aren't trying to sell you something.
Annoying? Possibly to some. Doesn't really concern me personally, as im on the home screen for 2 seconds before launching an app.

          • +1

@garvani: Exactly this, press the arrow down and it's gone.

          • +1

@garvani: agreed, they're not unskippable ads like YouTube or free to air channels.

      • I believe these are for ads within the network's platform itself.

    • +3

That’s why I’m happier pirating. Access everything within one app. So you never on the Home Screen and needing to have multiple applications to access different content from other streaming services. Got too much work needing multiple streaming services to access everything.

    • Woah was considering but now I'm definitely not…

    • There is an option to turn autoplay ads off. It's just buried down in one of the sub-menus.

  • If I have a 4k Google TV is this worth getting?

    • +1

From my experience it's mainly the speed of the user interface. its a lot faster using the amazon fire stick, that being said my wife keeps going back to the normal UI cause its a lot more familiar.

      • Cheers, might just keep the Google TV

      • thanks for this, are you speaking from personal experience? I like the firestick max 4k but find it bit laggy sometimes, is the Fire TV MUCH better?

      • Navigation of apps is ridiculously fast compared to tbox/tv apps I've used. Plex is night and day.

      • The Apple TV would be the best but the locked down walled garden approach killed it for me. I just wish there was an equivalent Android tv alternative to the Apple TV. This fire tv cube sadly isn’t it. Even though it has surpassed the Nvidia shield with cpu performance. I am really hoping that Nvidia actually make a new version next year, i figured with a new Nintendo switch there’s a small chance of having that happen.

  • 2x aw powerful as the 4K Max 23 or the older model?

  • Does this support DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD Atmos to play through my Sonos setup? To play Remux files etc Thanks

    • +1

      Looks like it

Dolby MAT trancoding for Streaming application and HDMI Input
Dolby MAT Input to Dolby MAT Output for HDMI Input
      Dolby TrueHD passthrough
      DTS passthrough
      DTS-HD passthrough (basic profile)

      https://developer.amazon.com/docs/fire-tv/device-specificati…

    • +1

I remember reading somewhere that the fire cube does passthrough TrueHD Atmos

    • +3

It supports TrueHD, TrueHD Atmos, DTS core, but not DTS-HD:MA.

They cheaped out on the ethernet port since it's 10/100 and not gigabit, so you need fast and stable WiFi 6 speeds to reliably play high bitrate files.

  • my nvidia shield pro (2019) still goign strong - as much as I think this is a great deal and want to try it out - I dont' think I can justify it? anyone else have/had both? Are there any material differences?

    • Other than this supporting HLG and AV1, it is worse in every other way. I wouldn't bother.

      • Thanks for that. Just what I wanted to hear haha. Shield pro keeps me going I guess :)

    • Shield may have better upscale. Other than that, I find it similar but cube tv has AV1 if you ever use it. Has more updated hardware so may also be better.

I have not use my shield as much, been using cube tv more if that helps.

      • Yea I don't use AV1 (i don't think) lol

I still use my shield daily and it's doing the job. Mainly streaming from FTA, netflix, disney, youtube.. so i think from all things considered, not much point in investing into a fire cube i guess.

Got an ATV from random ebay listing super cheap but I dont' end up using it much cos the shield still does the job

  • Is there a way to get espn app to work o ln the fire stick? When I go to the app store it says it's unavailable.

    • I have side loaded the phone apk to watch NFL redzone via a fetch account. It's not the best solution, you need to use a mouse app to click the screen. Very clunky to work with, but for sports events you just leave on … It works.

    • +1

If there is an android version available then it is very easy to sideload. Look up sideloading on firetv in google.

I bought this when my Nvdia Shield Pro's remote broke. Comparing 70$ for a remote versus 109 for a complete system I went ahead and bought this fire cube tv. I am not impressed tbh therefore im returning it and will just buy a bnew shield pro remote.

    • what did you not like about this Fire cube TV vs Shield Pro?

  • I ordered earlier for the $109 price and thought that was a good price then luckily I came back to this thread and saw the new lower price then cancelled the earlier order and reordered with the new price, thanks ozbargain.com.au and fellow ozbargainers.

Ps. I ordered the firestick 4k max last week for a bedroom Eko 65in TV to replace the remote with the sticky buttons that make you go mad. It's so much better than the chromecast google TV 4k.

This Firecube TV will go the the main lounge room tv and have the smarttubenext set up, plus hopefully the voice activation to power on TV works.
