  • What else would I need as a complete beginner with no other gear?

Soldering iron and solder. I buy a few kits from these guys every year as my daughter loves making them. The instructions can be a little less than clear at first, but they can always be worked out. Avoid kits that use SMD (surface mount devices) at first as they're really fiddly and can be hard to identify which component is which.

Something like this will get you going. A solder sucker (spring loaded syringe in reverse) is dead handy as it allows you to melt your mistakes and suck them into oblivion (soldering mistakes only, sadly) https://www.amazon.com.au/Soldering-Iron-Kit-Adjustable-Deso…

      • Have you tried the Tesla Coil DIY Kit?

My daughter has it sitting in her "to do" kits box, but it's not built yet.

Hello, you don't need any expensive tools. Below are some basic soldering tools needed: soldering iron, solder wire, scissors, tweezers, screwdriver. This kit is not too difficult, beginners can try it. Just be patient, follow the installation manuals and feel free to contact us if you need any assitance.

I would also get some flux it will make it abit easier. I can also recommend the pinecil v2

      • Rather than faffing around with separate flux, a flux/rosin core solder is simpler for a beginner. One with lead in too (flows better). Something like this - https://www.altronics.com.au/p/t1095-0.8mm-tube-17gm-60-40-l… Just wash your hands after using it.

        • Ive found that its not always enough and you may need more flux

          • @JXXY1337: Are you using lead free? It might be partly that and partly temperature.

            • @banana365: I use lead free, lead will flow much better but I personally think that if the solder doest have higher percent of flux you will need more anyway
