The M1 Air still represents better value…

    • +12

Not available in 15", so not apples to apples (hah)

    • +1

I use it (M1 air) everyday and love it! Bought for 1200 ish a few years ago. Still fast smooth feels good and I love the old tapered shape. I reckon 13 is the best. Can take on plane or lie in bed with this

    • agree. light and (almost) equally powerful, not to mention dual storage chips.. and I liked that wedged design more

  • Shows 2128 for me

  • +8

    M3 MBAs expected January - March…

  • Purchased from OfficeWorks, thanks OP.

  • Nice discount

  • +7

    8GB RAM !!!!!

    • +4

Acceptable in an air, not a pro

      • +3

IMO if you're using it light enough to be fine with 8gb ram, you'll be fine with the M1 2020 version

        • +3

good point, except if you're old like me and refuse to wear glasses

        • +3

$1800 for a "light use" device. Surely a bargain.

          • +1

@Bluto Mindpretzel: I wouldn’t say this is ‘light use’ even with 8gb. Very well built, fast and efficient.

    • +14

I've been a Windows guy for yonkies. my last laptop was 4k i7-1260P with 3050 Ti and 64GB of RAM

I bought cheapest 13 M1 (8/256) when it dipped to $1197 at OW couple weeks back, just for fun

and guess what, in the same software for photo editing this 8gb MBA beats my windows laptop in every way possible. adding photos to the library is instant. switching between photos is instant. applying filters and tools is real time. and it does so without spinning fans and lasts 5 times longer.

guess what, already sold my i7-1260p 64GB RAM laptop and this 8gb toy is here to stay. even if it pages to SSD, does so in a way that there's no perceived delay or degradation in performance. whatever they did they knew what they were doing

      • +3

Oh no, so all the crying about 8gb ram being not enough - made by opinionated and fierce people who potentially haven't used a mac for longer than a month - is wrong?

        • +4

but you can't tell them that ……

        • +6

or maybe like myself they tried macs years ago when they sucked were no better than their wintel counterparts (except for screens and build maybe), and dismissed them as an option

but seriously macs are worth trying again, especially Air, since they pack a lot of punch for the price when they drop.

I am still no apple fan, and their pricing policies are outright extortion ridiculous, but that's my opinion, take it or leave it. I tried, I liked, no complains about 8GB

I don't have any iPads or iPhones, apple watches etc., not convinced and bought well into Samsung galaxy stuff, also I prefer smart watches that look like, you know, watches, they gotta be round. quite a few reasons apple products didn't quite find way into this household. but m1 chip is really good I admit it

        • +7

I've used Macs for years (>7) and I still find 8GB insufficient. I have 2 Macs sitting next to me , one of which is a 16GB M1 Mac mini, suffice to say I'd never go back to 8GB.

          Here's my mem usage.

          ❯ top -l1 | grep PhysMem

          PhysMem: 23G used (4212M wired), 1442M unused.

          • +2

@OzHan: yep that's fine, you have yours sitting next to you, I have mine sitting next to me, you're happy I'm happy and obviously my usage is different from yours and YMMV 😊

        • +4

Wow, guzzling the apple kool-aid aren’t we?

Regardless of if 8gb is or isn’t enough, Apple charges a ridiculous premium for the amount of ram and storage in their devices.

        • +2

It entirely depends on what tasks the user is performing. For a lot of people just doing light tasks 8gb is fine both on Windows and Mac. I suspect people find the Mac more zippy as their Windows system has a lot of bloat software installed.

Also the M series chipset has excellent thermals. A powerful Windows laptop might seem slower due to throttling that occurs from heat build up.

For power users you still need more ram if you want to maximize performance. There is nothing magic happening on a Mac machine. If a piece of software allocates 5gigs then that's going to be the same for both operating systems. Before the prevalence of SSD you would certainly notice the huge hit of having to use virtual memory as it wrote to a slow hard drive. But an SSD is still orders of magnitude slower than ram so you still don't want to be running out of memory.

          • @Goonos: No expert on Mac - but comment to disagree on Win - 8gb is not sufficient these days unless for the lightest of duties - Win needs 16gb

      • +1

Keep an eye on your SSD usage. With the 256GB SSD it's easy to run low, and when there is low SSD space that's when the Macbook performance can fall off a cliff.

        • yep thanks for the heads up. 64GB card contains roughly 2400 photos, and I never edit more than 1000 at once. I will be fine. no intent to store my whole photo library on it, just the stuff I work on this very instant

          • +1

@shabaka: Just keep an eye on the ssd in terms of life span, not discounting the fact that mem, ssd and cpu on the one subsystem is why you are experiencing good performance regardless of the low ram, but the swap file on your ssd is getting hammered.

As with everything, issue isn't that these won't perform, issue is they can't be upgraded and if anything fails it's e-waste… RAM and SSD aren't at all expensive this is just the usual Apple pushing buyers into paying alot more for an upgraded version (which should just be the base). Just my view on how loyal customers should be treated better.. But this is Apple so yeh…

            • +1

@scud70: it was just a test run for me, essentially. I'll wait for a good deal and grab a 14 inch pro, and give this to better half. win win

            • +1

@scud70: for the record today I successfully returned M1 13 base model, and incidentally today Apple added a bunch of M1 pro 14's to refurbished store and I grabbed one. 16/512 were $2299, and 16/1tb were $2539 and that's what I grabbed lol mini LED panel and all

        • +1

The 256gb chips used here are the cheaper low end speed limited ones
So best to get the 512

    • Yes , it works for those who believe 😱

  • Anyone got a savescreen of the 15-Inch MacBook Air M2 (8CPU/10GPU), 512GB SILVER model at this price ???

Need it for a price protection claim but currently SILVER is no longer available to order, only the other colours.

    Much appreciated if you have.

    • Officeworks has silver available when I check

      • Unfortunately not the 512 GB SSD model, only the 256 GB SSD.
Would be v happy if I'm working though.
        Do you have a link?

        • Sorry yeah I think it must have legged from starlight. My bad

  • +4

640kB or ram as that's all you'll ever need?

  • +1

    just bought one !! thanks

  • Out of Stock, for CnC & delivery to Metro WA 😔

  • +5

Choose 16GB/512GB and see the price skyrocket to Pro level. Air only makes sense when you're happy with the base model.

    • +1

It's the baseline device of choice for kids school they are entering into. OW offered 7 day quote to lock in price but that doesn't help the $3k gift cards I have that will only be valid in-store 🙄

  • +1

It’s 8GB RAM so only enough for toddlers

    Adults need 32GB and up

  • +2

Missed it - goddamit - been waiting for this to go on sale!

    • Used both 8GB & 16GB.
      Pretty much different devices.
Well worth the extra few hundred imo.

  • +2

Minimum 16GB RAM. So many YT already tested that the amount of swap disk being used is not ideal not matter how optimised Mac OS and their hardware is. I'm holding out still to update my sorry Intel-base MacBook Pro!

    • The fact is its not optimised, Its the same OS - in fact the Mac OSes released before M1 were better in performance. only difference is now RAM is built into the CPU and SSD is faster than they used to be.

    • I use a 16G m1 pro for software development work and has run into absolutely no issue what so ever. 16gb for everyday use laptop such as air is an overkill and waste of $.

But hey, we live in a world where people would sweat over a few a MHz difference between hardware components, so what do I know 🤷‍♂️

  • Good price, recently bought 16gb/512gb during Black Friday (using discounted cards).Fantastic laptop, I come from an M1 so not too much of a difference except the stunning large screen. In terms of weight very similar.

  • Still not worth the price IMO

Why? These are great machines and will age really well. The performance for everyday tasks is next to nothing.

  • +2

maybe it's time to move on from my 2013 15" MBP.. lol

People saying apple's not worth the price but experience has taught me better. (Get ready for the Kool-Aide Ooooohhh yeah!!!)
More than 10 year old laptop, bought it for $3000 (16gig ram, 512 HDD, discrete GPU) back then… my partner said i was crazy!

They're on their 5th windows computer (Dell, Dell, Lenovo, Asus, Dell again)

    Mine's still running fine!

It's got so many dings and dents but i fixed that with woolies/disney stickers, battery only holds 40 min charge so it's just hooked up to a screen with BT keyboard/Trackpad, lost a bottom screw some years ago so it kinda gapes at one end, one of the USB ports is very temperamental, only one thunderbolt port is working, the charge cables's mostly electrical tape at the ends (hahaha).

Yep.. sure.. not worth it. Lol.

  • +1

Got a M1 Pro MBP 14" 16GB/512GB for $2229 refurb from Apple, better off waiting for something like that imo.

    • thanks a lot for the tip, those m1 pros are/were available again today.

      I ended up returning my m1 air 13 and snapped a 14 pro with m1 16/1tb for $2539

16/512 were available too for $2299 but I thought 🤔 another $239 gets you another 512GB I'll take it

  • I’ll upgrade my 2017 MBP when they get rid of that ridiculous notch. Everyone made fun of it on the iPhone but somehow it’s acceptable on a MacBook.

    • +1

You can change the resolution so you have the lovely thick bezel and no notch, no harm to your eyes. It will look outdatedly 2017 again.

You can't get the glorious Touchbar back that way tho /s.

  • Missed it…

Should I just but the 256gb from OW and cry in a corner? (Gift for xmas)

  • Purchased and loving it.

    • -2

How? says its out of stock?

      • Picked it up yesterday. The migration assistant has been a bit of a pain but all is working well! Upgraded from a 13 MBP M1 as wanted a larger screen as I get back into travelling.

  • They have just corrected the price to 2197 ): any other deals around for 13"?

  • Price matched at JB!

    • How did you do that?

    • Wowee, nice one. jB online chat didn't when I enquired, they said they couldn't price match, the best to offer me was $2350 🙄

      • Finally managed to get 2 units from my local OW as stock were released and OW honoured this pricing $1877 instead of their shelf $2,247.00. Winning.

  • Can anyone upload or send a receipt so I can try get a price match please?

  • WHERE ARE THE M2 PRO DEALS. MY INTEL MAC GOING THEMO NUCLEAR
