Forgetting this $20 promo , anyone here driven the Atto 3 SUV? Reviews?

    • +6

The only byds I would test drive are atto and seal.
Daydream about them every time I go to the servo

      • +9

The game to find the cheapest servo never ends. But its always funny to get to IKEA locations (usually have free charging) to see a whole bunch of EV's slow roll past a whole other bunch of EVs occuping the chargers.

        • +6

Though admittedly everyone is driving past to see if they can get free charging. Most people charge home

pegaxs has a great post on the ATTO 3.

    • +2

Love it. Great height to get in and out of easily, very HD cameras, budget option EV, fast enough and still has normal car features.

    • +1

Yes I have. What specific information you are after?

    • +7

I've driven the atto. Feels and drives really well and quite zippy. Compared to my Mitsubishi Outlander, the build quality was a lot better.

    • +10

Rented one from Sixt for a few days.
Pros - quick enough (0-100 7.3s), quiet, huge main display with novel rotation feature for portrait/landscape (will only do landscape for Android Auto), has a driver info display (unlike a Model 3), passenger room is good, huge glass roof, energy efficiency was good (about 14-15kWh/100km, despite me driving it like a peanut),.range matched claims

Cons - suspension tune is unacceptable (too firm at low speeds, too floaty and poor body control at highway speeds), dashboard design is an acquired taste (one I don't wish to acquire), small but annoying software bugs (driver display wouldn't automatically change to night mode was the main one), no speed limiter like most other car brands now (better than cruise control IMO), boot is too small like most SUVs in this class, regenerative braking was inconsistent and cuts out below 20kmh, sound system sucked

It impressed me for the price but I'd rather spend more.

      • +6

I rented one from Sixt back in Aug and had similar thoughts. Full disclaimer, I drive a Tesla daily, considered getting a BYD but the Tesla ended up being the right price for us.

Pros - Really easy drive, zippy, responsive, built nicely, came with all the bells and whistles, interior is nice minus the strange guitar strings (playable, another plus), decent boot size and I enjoyed the additional height. The interior light beats to the music, which is a cool party trick!

Cons - The dashboard UI was horrible, unresponsive at times, kept changing to night mode during the day so we couldn't see the map guidance, or adjust air-con, cruise control was really finicky to use, it kept getting stuck on the previous speed (say 30) and would slow down to that even if you are traveling 100km/h on the freeway. Not sure if it's a user error but super dangerous. The most annoying part is the constant chime! I am a weirdo who loves driving in silence so maybe I am more sensitive, or the cabin insulation was poor. Our ears started to ring at night with phantom "Ding dong ding dong" and "Dong Ding Dong Ding" (when you turn the left indicator on).

Like the user above me said, it's an impressive car for the price, but I am still really happy we went with Tesla (yeah the build quality sucks but everything else works seamlessly).

I kept walking away without turning the car off, or locking the car, or forgetting how to switch gears. Funny when I thought the car had bugged out again because it wouldn't lock, it turned out I had left the car running, once again.

        • I rented in June. Sounds like the software got worse lol
Agree on the cruise control, was really strangely set up and did have some similar moments of "what the hell has it done".
          I don't remember any chime.

      • -6

0-100 in 7.3 seconds is so slow for an EV especially at this price. I'm sure with wear on the battery that number becomes longer. A 2009 normal Sedan lancer does 0-100 in 9.6 seconds and that's a 4cyl. You could probably get your average Holden or Ford take out the spare wheel and the back seats and be faster then the BYD for less than 1/10 of the price

        • You're comparing a small to mid size SUV aka mum mobile to cars in a different class.
At least compare it to a Rav 4 or similar.

          • -3

@dasher86: An NA Ford FG XR6 weighs almost exactly the same as an Atto 3 and beats it from 0-100. But if you really want me to compare it let's take a 2014 Ford Territory SUV. 300kg heavier than the Atto 3 but does 0-100 in 7.5 seconds. You have to realize I was comparing the lancer because a 13 year old 6k lancer with 200xxxkms on it should not be close to a brand new 60k EV. I'd just be worried if the Attos battery only has that much pull now what about after a decade of use?

            • +1

@lookingforadeal7: A Rav 4 does it 8.1s so by that theory how come a lancer is faster than it.
And Rav 4 can cost up to 60k as well.

              • -2

@dasher86: I'm comparing EVs to petrol cars, not sedans to SUVs. Just pointing out the obvious scam marketing, EV companies propose EV = faster which is obviously not the case

          • -3

@dasher86: "EVs are fast" is a huge scam, yeah if you start at the 100k+ models sure, otherwise your average electric scooter is probably beating the Atto at the lights lol

            • +1

@lookingforadeal7: The X Power is about 60k + on roads and you wont see that power for that price point since the Holden and Ford era.

              • -6

@dasher86: It's not really about price to performance, just moreso this "new shiny tech" thats supposedly better is outperformed or rivalled by low end cars from over a decade a go that you can get for 5k off marketplace. Again there's already horror stories of people's EVS shitting themselves already, they haven't been a thing long enough for that to be okay. It's basically an overpriced test product at this stage but hopefully the tech will improve. In saying that I'm sure everyone sees it as a scam now, EV charges ran on petrol generators, I remember that being made as a joke before EV chargers were everywhere, turns out truth is stranger than fiction.

                • +8

                  @lookingforadeal7: Are you okay mate?
You seem abit obsessed on the performance of the EV. Not everyone is buying this car for it's straight line "performance", but the overall offer.

But let's take your argument further to prove a point, why don't you look at the Seal Performance variant? How many petrol cars within the same budget can beat the BYD Seal Peformance of 0-100 in 3.8s?

You are literally taking one aspect/one feature of the car and trying to crap on the whole EV segment. Open up your mind dude.

                • +2

@lookingforadeal7: Nothing you've said makes any sense or contributes to the discussion.
                  1) comparing the value of used cars to new cars is a waste of time and you're exclusively doing it on the value of acceleration times
                  2) why did you even bring a 9.6s 0-100 Lancer into the discussion? Have you actually driven a 7s 0-100 EV and said Lancer? Do you have any idea how gutless the Lancer will feel by comparison? Even a 7s 0-100 ICE car will feel slower most of the time by comparison because EVs react so much quicker to throttle input than waiting for an auto 'box to downshift 2, 3 or 4 gears
                  3) 7.3s is not slow for the price point, EV or otherwise. There's a few small-medium SUVs that are slightly quicker, the only one that is significantly quicker is a Kona N, provided you can get a demo for $50k
                  4) Wait til you find out about ICE cars prematurely dying when they've been on the market for over 100 years and still have major design flaws from time to time

            • +3

              @lookingforadeal7:

"EVs are fast" is a huge scam

It was all part of Elon's strategy to make EV's appealing. Remember before Tesla all EV's sucked ass (Leaf, Pruis etc were jokes) so he needed to do something to change perceptions and he did a good job of that IMO. You can hate on the showmanship all you like, but it works.

        • +1

Less power means less energy consumption which means more range. BYD has cars from 3.9 seconds and a potential new car with 2.0 seconds. The faster cars aren't aimed at poor people like you.

    • Not much chop. Seal has great review

    • +5

I've had the Atto 3 for 9 months.

It is very nice to drive. Very zippy. I love the safety features as I came from a 2008 prius.
The interior is quirky but really nice. I feel quite fancy driving people places. And only get a little irritable when combustion engines are in the lane that merges soon :'D

Only complaints are mainly small usability things such as:
      1. going to aircon controls from android auto (can be improved by an update)
      2. inconsistent auto light/dark mode (can be improved by update)
      3. Changing adaptive cruise control goes up and down in 5kmph intervals in the multiples of 5 which is theoretically good but like all modern cars, the speedometer is off, so it is much more difficult to go the actual speed (when the car says 83, it goes 80) - I would want it to go up/down by 1, and then go by 5's if you continue to press. (could theoretically be improved by OTA update but less likely)
      4. Sometimes the YOU ARE GOING TO CRASH SOON alert goes off when in control but its just a suburban street with parked cars on both sides (not too bad, but I am semi often telling my car to calm down)
      5. adaptive cruise control breaking could be a bit smoother, my passengers don't like when I rely on it as it feels a bit sudden. (this is when at traffic lights coming up to a stationary car) (i don't know if safety things like this can be improved by update, or they don't change that bc AMCAP ratings etc)

Overall very good value. I had looks at more respected brands but it seemed like paying 20k more for their base models but you get everything with this. No regrets.
It's a very good car but life can be a little trickier managing the charge but that's worth the extra pain ethically and monetarily for me.

      • +5

Had mine for 11 months now. Have had somewhat similar experiences:
        1. I don't use android auto; my phone can't do it wirelessly and it's not worth the hassle
        2. I don't really have this. It'll often change when going through short tunnels or sometimes even under large bridges, but other than that it's not really been an issue for me
        3. You can set it at a specific speed if you hit down on the switch when you're at that speed. This is another thing that hasn't been an issue for me; I always use the speedo anyway. I'd rather be slightly under the speed limit, so even if I/the car accelerates a bit, I'm not speeding. That said, the cruise control is pretty good and pretty much never goes more than 1km/h over the speed you have set.
        4. I get the same thing with the phantom collision warnings. I've decided that my car just has anxiety.
After a while you get a sense of when it's likely to go off (especially when it frequently happens in the same spots) and can drive a bit further to one side or a bit slower to avoid it
        5. I don't like the adaptive cruise control braking to a stop either. It starts way too late for my comfort. It's fine for everything else, though.

          1. Yes I do do (heh) that, it's just unsatisfying when I hit the wrong number. And if I do, I got the little beeps and distracted.
          2. Yep! It's certainly alright when in slower traffic. certainly braking either way when faster, but good to have emergency braking for peace of mind.

also @dasher86, that is excellent, I updated last night but didn't see what was in it ✨ (ohh, issues huh..)

      • Given the last Atto 3 I drove was in June and had similar complaints, all of these issues should have been addressed by now. Deters me from considering the brand in future.

        1. Solved on v 1.7 update with quick swipe but 1.7 has introduced other issues.
        2. Just set it to dark mode all the time.
        3. You can set exact speeds by entering and exiting cruise and pressing down but requires more steps.
    • +3

I've had one for almost a year. It's had a lot of minor issues (most of which were fixed by updates,) but overall it's been a great experience. It's not going to beat a model 3 (or probably any Tesla) off the line, but it's fun enough to drive and has enough power for anyone who isn't trying to race people.
Adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist mean that on the highway the car basically drives itself.

There's heaps of internal space. I'm tall and have the seat back further than most people would, and there's still enough space that I could sit directly behind the driver's seat and be comfortable.

      Some issues I've had:
      * The sun shade has randomly stopped working on a few occasions. Sometimes it wouldn't open unless I held my finger on the button, others it just wouldn't open at all. One of those times I got the dealer to reset it (I had to take it in for the three month peace of mind service anyway,) the other times it just fixed itself after a while, or after a software update. Hasn't happened since the last update a couple of months ago.
      * As another comment mentioned, the collision warning is a bit overzealous. It will go off when there are parked cars you are in no danger of hitting.
      * The ACC works well on surface streets too, but will sometimes get confused by cars that aren't actually in front of you (parked on the side of the road, for example) and will slow down. Easy enough to override by pressing the accelerator until it's not confused, though. It is however pointless in stop-start traffic. Once the car stops it won't go again until you tap the accelerator. That's probably not unique to this vehicle. It's the first car I've had with any kind of cruise control, so it might be normal.
      * The internal RGB lights have a sound-reactive setting, but it doesn't work with Spotify if you run it directly from the car. If you're using android auto/carplay or using the car's media player for the radio or whatever, it does work.
      * The automatic braking has triggered a few times for no apparent reason; mostly when I was reversing down my driveway.
      * The buttons on the remote sometimes don't want to work; mainly the one to open the boot.

These are all fairly minor issues, none of which have ever had any real impact on my enjoyment of the vehicle. In the 11 months that I've had it, I haven't regretted the purchase once.

Mate, the phone/computer you're using to type that was also made in china.

You also do realise a majority of parts used in toyotas, fords, etc are made in china? All teslas coming to Australia are 100% made in china?

      • There's made in China and Chinese made. They can make anything to the highest quality, to the lowest quality and every step in between depending on who runs the factory, how the factory is run and customer requirements.

Seeing these cars being sold for cheaper, tells me corners are being cut somewhere, hence the zero star ancap MG, and /or these state owned car companies are making us all depend on them even more, running at a loss and flooding us with crap.

Also its not just the assembly of cars on production line quality, its the components. Say Toyota use 3mm thick metal, they might use 1.5mm. Instead of a headlight having 100,000 hour life, they use 50,000 hour etc etc. Almost all consumer wont know things like this, and even experts wont unless you pull apart car.Even then how do you know the life of a electrical component until it fails, unless you experience it.

I wouldn't buy one, as i see these as disposable cars with questionable resale value. This might upset alot on here as all they see is the price and think its cheaper so its good.

In saying that im not the target market either. Some people are not car people and just need four wheels and think new is better, when in reality a 2 year old corolla would be better choice, if it was similar spec.

        • +2

Ok, your evidence for cost cutting is by mentioning the MG and their Zero ancap as example. So does that mean the BYD SEAL with its 5 star 2023 ancap rating is not crap? you obvious have 0 bloody clue about the BYD brand or you wouldn't even mention the state owned BS. i wonder how well your 2 year old corolla will do on the much stricter 2023 ancap test. You're not one of those "car people" and your ignorant post stinks of it.

    • +7

Most Teslas are made out of Shanghai and if I remember correctly that's from China.

      • +2

Shanghai is in China, you sir have made your point!

    • +10

You realise the Teslas that reach Australia are made in China right? Same as all the electric Volvos, Polestars and some BMWs.

    • +10

This post probably isn’t worth responding to… such oversimplification and generalisations… I have a Fremont made Tesla. Like with many of the US made Tesla, the quality is just subpar. While there are plenty of terribly made Chinese cars, there are also decent ones made. Definitely would say the Shanghai made Teslas are better than Fremont ones.

Also, the point is moot - you don’t have a choice to buy US made teslas in Australia anymore

    • +7

You are saying the QC is not good then you recommend a Tesla. Interesting perspective you have there.

    • +4

There have been reports that Shanghai made teslas have better quality control than us made teslas😂

        • +3

You're correct, thanks for sharing the video links.

The CCP bots will neg anyone who criticises BYD despite the legitimate evidence regarding safety and quality.

If you want to buy an electric car I'd heavily reconsider before purchasing a BYD. Not only for your own safety and long term automotive reliability, but also consider the ethical implications of supporting a company based in China, where the government's actions have raised concerns about human rights and global ethical standards.

        • I suggest all to watch thus vids, get educated and plus+ this one

      • They are not the biggest maker.
They made 10,000's++ and dumped them all over china in fields and hidden in valleys. These vehicles are even Registered. They cashed in on the ccp's rebate scheme and lied to make out to the world they are the biggest maker.
Warren buffet and his mob have just pulled out their investment.
Check them out.. 1000's of cars falling, catching on fire and even blowing up.

Maybe, the au ones are made better..?
I wouldn't want to risk it.

And, have you seen the quotes for new battery when the batteries fail or have an issue for other ev makers? Quotes $40,000 to $60,000.

        • Ermmm, so they are the biggest maker then? You just stated it mate. Warren Buffet dropped his stake from 20 to 10 percent in May.
The carmakers dumping cars for subsidies, which is ludicrous as they would make a net loss regardless of subsidy…. Has been debunked. They were evs used for ridshare that were dumped when covid started.
Battery issues?? BYD have an eighth year warranty or 160000kms. Batteries are also rated for 1000 cycles which is 18.5 years at one cycle a week.
Regardless of your ill informed China ranting. Their cars are coming, they are now quality, well priced and much needed.

      • Your dumb.

If you're going to call someone dumb you should at least know how to spell…

    • +4

      Dumb ass

    • +5

LOL what a laugh. how ignorant can you be?? Tesla made in China, Volkswagen ID7 luxury made in China…EVs are just better made in China.

      • Tesla is their own factory and pay is much higher and they get extra days off. They are not forced to work 7 days a week 12hrs+

    • +1

I am negging to get into the neg orgy!

  • Seal is out for test drive?

    • For most dealerships they are still only letting those with orders to test drive but doesn’t hurt to ask

  • How does it compare to Tesla?

    • -4

Tesla won't rust as as badly as BYD for sure.

    • -1

BYD is better value for money. They sell 2x more EVs & growing

  • My friends said the MG4 is better car for chinese made ev. The app & battery is better app

    • -5

I wouldn't give a cent to SAIC knowing that money is funding genocide within China. Although it at least has a 5 Star ANCAP rating unlike the MG 5 with 0 Stars and MG 3 which is so terrible they won't even test it.

      • +4

So you just made a profile just to bad mouth China. ASPI would be proud.

        • +3

Not China. Just the CCP. I don't consider them the representatives of China. Just an occupation force.

        • +1

He mentioned in another post that he came from Taiwan……
Obviously under the same type of media controlled by ASPI.

      • Lots of genocide happening right now. we can see it live streamed…but no…nothing to see in the middle east. lets turn on google maps and find that massive factory compound in XinJiang and name it death camp!

        • Lots of genocide happening right now.

          Where specifically?
Do you know what the word genocide means? Because I know a lot of kids like to throw that word around every time something upsets them, but the reality never matches the hype.

      • Thank you for regurgitating ASPI garbage without at least some creative input. But I guess that's the life of a sheep… thought what's happening to Ukraine and Palestine would've waken most of you lot up.

But clearly you can't wake those that are pretending to sleep!
