It's nearly 2024. Windows 7 is dead, get over it

        It's almost 15 years old now…

Unlike this game which is almost 25 years old hehe.

Well this specific DE version isn't, I think around 5 years old but the pathing makes me want to cry

    • As a fellow Windows 7 user (for the hundreds and thousands of games that either do not work at all on Windows 10/11, or require arduous workarounds that often still dont work properly) I was also very upset about Valve's original decision on this matter.
However, Valve appeared to have quietly changed their stance and messaging on this, despite the Steam client on my Windows 7 install still saying it will "stop running" shortly, if you click on the warning, it sends you to their website with an updated message, with the most important part being:

"We expect the Steam client and games on these older operating systems to continue running for some time without updates after January 1st, 2024, but we are unable to guarantee continued functionality after that date."

Steam came out when XP was around. The legal standing for ceasing XP support is about as strong as when they stop supporting Windows 7. Good luck and Godspeed.

I still prefer Win 7 to Win 10 (less annoyances and distractions). I was forced to upgrade when i purchased new hardware (no Win 7 drivers); also now many games won't work on Win7 unless you find a hack. Win10 has DirectX 12 as well.

One of the best AoE (if not the best)

    • Only 4 AoEs I know. II was the golden but aged and bugged. III was uncool. IV is the revision. Maybe takes a few more years for MS to get AoE back to best again. Nowadays games need regular content updates to keep alive.

    Thankyou - good holiday timing.

  • Besides the Rome DLC, are any of the other expansions recommended in terms of mainly playing campaigns?

  • Steal at this price…

  • I couldn't get into it. As a kid it was cutting edge game design, but now spending 15 minutes just to position initial troops to actually start the level is just infuriating.

    • What do you mean position initial troops? You mean working your economy through dark age to feudal to start your first attack? There are different game modes like death match or even custom games you can create so you don't need to.

      • I mean the campaign. Just playing death match or multiplayer is fine, though still a little slow compared to how RTS is done today.

  • Does cheatcode work on it?

    • I love the monkey head

      • Cars dominant everything

    • yes (for single player / campaign)

  • AOE2 is free with game pass sub but tempted to keep a copy of it

  • Wolosoooooooooooooo many campaigns and it feels like a profit to me!
