1366 x 768 touch display, 4GB RAM, eMMC storage and Jasper Lake N6000 for those playing at home.

So refurb laptop would be better and cheaper.

      • +3

Much better and (potentially) much cheaper with an OS that isn't crippled

      $500 for this?!

      Yeah nah.

I'm a fan of Chromebooks, but this looks like a terrible deal. I could not possibly tolerate that low-res screen. Especially not for $500!
Get a refurb and install Linux, or ChromeOS Flex.

ChromeOS Flex is not the same ChromeOS. It doesn't have Google Play Store or the ability to run Android Apps.

      • If that is important, you probably want an ARM chromebook, not Intel.

  • Is ChromeOS absolutely necessary for a school byod? Or is ChromeOS Flex ok too?

    • +2

The main difference is that Flex does not support Android. However with a 4GB device, Android would likely struggle anyway. A 4GB Chromebook would probably suffice for most kids up to hear 10, but not if they are at all technical.

depends what the school ecosystem is. my sons school is windows or mac os as they run windows 365.
guess if your school runs google apps chromebooks fit in.

  • So what's the cheapest chromebook for school for kids?

    • There is not much around lately, not like there was. Hard to recommend any new ones.
Does your school really require a Chromebook? Refurb with Linux or Windows is likely better.

      • would have thought windows so that kids have app skills in office 365 when they go into the workforce. in my working career in IT haven’t been to one organisation that is chromebook based, it’s usually windows and office.
think some woolies staff are windows laptops and google apps for drone workers.

        • I guess price is a factor here.. most chromebooks are below $500 mark compared to Windows laptops

        • I don't want them working at woolies, thanks :)
ChromeOS is good in an education setting, and Office 365 works fine on it.
Microsoft has come along way, and are no longer monopolistic.

But the last time I got my kids a Chromebook, it was $99 on Amazon, and Malcolm Turnbull was PM.

All Chromebooks are cheap, compared to Apple and Windows machines. As mentioned, deals are rare.

For students, I would recommend checking
them out in store. JB HiFi usually have a good range, Officeworks will have them online, not sure about in store. Get a good case for them when you're there.

Choosing a model thats the right size screen for your child's needs, and can handle being transported might save you more money than just buying the cheapest. But if you're not sure whether it will survive, save some bucks on the first one. I would suggest a clamshell with touch screen as being the most robust, and work well with limited desk space. If you think it will survive school use a couple of years, look for 8GB RAM models, but 4GB will work.

Chromebooks generally have all day battery life, they just need to charge overnight.

      • Agree. Not many deals on chromebooks over the last 6 months. This is one of the rare ones I've seen over the last few months with a decent processor and storage and which comes in laptop form factor

Aldi have a $299 Lenovo Chromebook in this week’s catalogue. Higher res screen. Worth a comparison

    • Depending on your usage…it comes with a single 1xUSB C so not much in terms on connectivity
I have one of those which they use to watch Netflix

Edit: 2 usb connections, my bad 😉 definitely one to add to the list

    • Well Spotted! That looks much, much better for school: 2000x1200 IPS display, 2-in-1 design, ARM cpu and 40% cheaper.

a single 1xUSB C so not much in terms on connectivity

      Specs say: 2 x USB-C® 3.1 Gen 1 (support data transfer, power delivery 3.0 and DisplayPort™ 1.4)
It is 2023. Connectivity is wireless.
