$100 off Canon DSLRs at JB Hi-Fi with Trade-In of Crummy Old Camera. 600D Body $396

1580

JB are knocking off $100 from Canon DSLR cameras if you hand in your crappy old camera. I just bought a lovely 600D with 18-55mm lens kit for $546. All I did was take in a rubbish 10 year old 5MP camera that I had in a shoe box of string and paper clips. I almost felt embarrassed handing it over to the sales assistant. However, the promotion says, "any camera working or not."

Since you have to take your old camera in, it is obviously STORE PICKUP ONLY.

Hahahaha, I'm so pleased with myself right now. I'm taking the rest of the day off to play with my new camera and run around the neighbourhood.

And to the naysayers and killjoys, this is Aussie stock with an Aussie warranty. Not grey import cameras.

God Bless.

Lol if you are really cheap try gumtree a dead camera

    • Hahahaha!Spelling police! Nice. I've changed it.

  • Where can I find cheap Nikon D700 in Sydney, anyone?

    • +2

      google.com.au :)

  • +2

Looks like a good deal, got a 11yo 1.2MP ditial camera that had a built in MP3 function. On a fresh pair of Energiser Lithium batteries it could take 7 whole photos before draining them.

  • If only i had a truly shitty old camera.

Still, i think its worth trading in a relatively okay old non-DSLR to save the extra $50 or so on the 600d (over the Teds deal).

    • Buy an $8 disposable and trade it in. I just did it today and can confirm it worked.

  • -4

600D body is $496 not $396. That is for the 1100D

    • +1

      $496 before the trade-in…and den…

      • and dennnnnnnn?

        • …and den and den and den and den and den! :)

        • Dude….

    • +1
      • $100 for the trade in.
  • Hmm. I wonder if they will price match as well as reduce the $100? probably not, $100 is already a significant reduction. Great deal.

  • +1

Over 10 years of stashing old non-working digital cameras finnally pays off, who would have thought. Got a an old 2mp Fuji Finepix that I got in Japan in 2001, yesterday it was a paper weight, today its a $100 paper weight.

Catch: have to fork out $400…Always been more of a point and shoot compact camera kinda guy, do I really need to jump onto this….. I guess its the nice feeling of unloading some junk for something decent.

So everyone seems to think the 600D is the better way to go. As a first step into the DSLR world will I really notice if I just went with the 1100??

Also the 1100 is the cheapest I can see listed on the website, anyone know if there is a cheaper option to collect on the $100?

    • The 1100d is the cheapest canon DSLR you can get

      • +1

But as a DSLR newb, will I notice the difference?
Is the 1100 at a good price after trade in?

        • Yeah as a newb this is tough. The 600D is obviously better, however that will not matter if it stays at home and is never used. However if I do feel like packing it on along for a holiday and making use a new DSLR will I quickly regrest the 1100.

I like the flip out screen on 600D though.

Think ill drop in at JB on the home and have closer look at them.

        • I would say no, as long as you don't do much video you should love the 1100d. what type of photography to you do? if you don't mind me asking :)

        • Agreed. I regret buying 1100D everyday.

        • +1

The 600D represents a bargain in itself even before the $100 discount, as the same sensor is used all the way up to the 7D camera which is about $1100-1200.

Read some reviews on the 600D to get an appreciation for the hardware you're getting for that little bit extra.

Personally I wouldn't really bother with the 1100D as it actually feels cheap in the hand.

        • Plus, the screen is quite small and a bit dodgy. The controls are a bit sticky and everything has a very cheap feel! Trust me everyone, I have used the 1100D and bought the 600D as it is a much, much better camera. In many ways, the 600D is really the entry-level DSLR from Canon.

  • what about a film camera? … lol i cant find the terms and conditions!

    • A N Y camera !! web cam …kids toy cam …. a golo disposable camera… an old phone with a camera ….. any camera, means any camera, even if it is broken, bits missing, kaput, stuffed.

      • Just apparently not bread or cake shaped like a camera, only Cash Converters will buy those…

I suppose you could carve one out of a bar of soap, but that might only work in a prison! :p

        • +1

I was shaping a camera from wood …. damn it! :P

        • Might still work on store security though… ;)

  • +2

Guys, if you go to JB Hifi Elizabeth St. Melbourne CBD, they will take a $14.00 disposable film camera as trade in . You'll get the $100 off. Just got a 600D for $396 (+$14.00 for the Polaroid disposable camera you can buy next door at Michael's). Look for the pregnant female salesperson, not sure if other reps will take the disposable cameras. Offer is only valid until Sunday, apparently.

Plus if you are going overseas in the next month, you'll get another 10% back due to GST refund at the airport.

    • As compared to the pregnant male salesperson? I will say this about the staff at the Melbourne JB stores - they are far more friendlier and go above and beyond the level of service you'll get at say Fountain Gate or Dandenong JB stores.. Maybe its just my experience and not an accurate reflection, but this has been the case so far.. Maybe time of day makes a difference too….

  • For those wanting a Nikon - JB also have a D5100 with twin lens kit for $796 with 2 year local warranty:
    http://www.jbhifi.com.au/photo/digital-cameras/nikon/d5100-w…

  • Any old camera with a phone sounds like a great plan some old nokias lying around home! Damn so tempted to get this but I don't really need it lol

    • You need it, you just don't realise it yet ;P

  • +1

They'll take $100 for both disposable and toy cameras as well!

    Just got 2x 600d's

  • +2

I just got this :P, I didn't have an old camera laying around so I went to a pawn brokers and got a camera for $10 and was on my way to JB…

If anyone in Newcastle is looking for this Kotara is out of stock, I had to go to Charlestown to get mine.

  • Awesome, you can also get 5% off with ING Payware, but you have to ask cashier to split bill.

  • Just visited the JB store in my neck of the woods (SE subs Victoria) and they don't have the 600d body only in stock :( (and according to him none of the other stores do either)… Typical… sigh

    • which store was this? I'm after a body only too! XO

    • CBD Elizabeth St. has body only in stock, bought one this afternoon. unless they've gotten OzBargained and have run out!

      • Most likely, we OzBargainers work fast….buy first, ask questions later (sometimes).

  • Hi, I am new to DSLR as well. I have heard that a twin lens kit will have a longer use.
The Canon 1100D twin kit is $700, minus $100 is $600. This is cheap?
    http://www.jbhifi.com.au/photo/digital-cameras/canon/1100d-1…

For an extra $200, a Nikon D5100 would be much better value?
    Thanks

    • So this deal is only good if you only want to body? At $396.
      http://www.jbhifi.com.au/photo/digital-cameras/canon/600db-1…

Can someone recommend a good lens for the 600D?

      • You can get the 50mm f/1.8 II from JB Hifi for $115 if you ask for it, which is a good price for Australian stock at a brick and mortar store.

It's a good lens, most people enjoy zoom lenses, where you can alter the field of view (more/less the camera can see) whereas the 50mmm is set to a specific narrow field of view.

What do you plan on using it for?

        • Taking pictures of my baby boy to be born early next year! :-)

        • +3

Congratulations :) For baby photos, a 50mm is fine - but once they get old enough to move you'll probably be wishing you had the 18-55mm kit lens, so you can quickly adjust how wide your shot is based on where they've managed to run off to!

The 50mm has a wide aperture of f/1.8 - this lets in bucketlaods of light so night shots are much nicer (less noise from having to up the ISO and less blurry for being able to have faster shutter speed).

I'd probably get the $396 body and watch eBay for an 18-55mm kit lens, they usually pop up for $60-$70. If you don't want to wait for a lens, and can afford an extra $100 while you wait for a 18-55mm to pop up on ebay then get the 50mm - you really won't regret it, do some reading on what each of the values mean (aperture, ISO, shutter speeds, focal lengths, etc.) so you are well versed and can see how to make a shot better (for example, shooting at high ISO with a fast shutter speed is good for fast action sports where a bit of noise doesn't matter, but low ISO with a slower shutter speed may be good for your baby photos). Sorry if it sounds like dribble, but it's important that you read up on it :)

        • +1

          Thanks, will do :)

      • works with all Canon DSLRs, both single, twin lens kits, as well as body only.

can't go wrong with the 24-105 L IS lens.

        • 24-105 are like $800 :S

        • Almost $900 grey.
          About $1100 local

  • Mt Druitt is out of stock

  • I jumped at this deal and purchased a the body only, I already own a 600d and was looking to sell my used one (1 year old) for around $350.. few people interested on the interwebs for it.. but at the same time I think I might keep both bodies and make use of all my different lens without having to switch over..

Thoughts? or is one camera body enough.. I think having two camera's as an advantage, being able to capture that moment quickly without having to change your lens.. decisions… !

    • +6

Lol, I can just picture it - two DSLRs hanging around your neck…the girls will surely be impressed :P

      • Lens size wont matter :-(

    • where do you sell your cameras? looking to sell my old one as well.

      • +1

Gumtree / ebay.. but there are so many sellers at the moment..!!

        @montorola I could have my 150mm - 500mm on one body + 50mm on the other body! =p

  • got a 600D at Parramatta. :D

    • Which one?
      Westfield or another one?

  • Got 600D body, but need a little effort.
bought from Wollongong, they said no stock but will get it from Miranda, and should be in Wollonggong on Tuesday. But I need the camera on weekend. Managed to pick it up my self from Miranda.

But.. the BIG BUT is, Miranda store has different ticket price than online price. They admited it, and that's the way it is. Miranda price is a lot more expensive than online price.

I traded my Nikon S2500 which broken really bad, the camera is quite new, less than 6 months old. I only gave them the camera body. I keep the rest: box, battery, charger, etc.

    $496 for 600D body is a bargain.

    • actually $396 for a 600D body is a better bargain…

      • Yeah.. I did a typo there, I mean 396 after trade in..

  • 600D single lens was all sold out in my area (Highpoint, VIC). Though, bought the twin lens instead for $746, from $946.

    • +1

how did you manage to get $200 off?

  • Picked up a 600D body tonight from JB Carindale for $382.

They said they only had one left in stock, but after searching for ages they couldn't find it and there were none left at stores nearby so they sold me the display model (the one kept behind the glass) for a discount. I traded in a rubbish 35mm film camera i found in the back of a drawer - the guy said as long as it has a lens on it they'll take it.

  • Nikon D5100 twin lens ($800) or Canon 600D twin lens ($850)?
The specs say that the Nikon is better?
    http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon-600d-vs-Nikon-D5100
    Thanks.

    • IIRC, the Nikon D5100 is the better camera from a technical perspective as it shares the same image sensor as the D7000; but the Canon 600D will be pretty darn good as well. The Canon is cheaper to buy lenses for due to the built-in focus motor, it's more svelte so easier to handle if you have smaller hands & unlike the Nikon has a flip-out screen which is important to some folks.

  • Went to parra Westfield last night. They ran out of body only so I bought a single lens kit. With the surcharge on amex it came to $556. However, cba platinum amex gives you 1 year extra warranty over the typical 12 months Australian warranty. Anyone tried this yet? Anyway I brought in a match box sized digitron camera. Sales people were not impressed and claimed you need one with a rechargeable battery. But manager said ok eventually. Another guy tried to trade in his old mobile but was rejected.

    • Parra on a Thursday night? You must be desperate lol

    • +1

Ad says "bring in any camera working or not"..
Did that mobile phone have a camera in it?
If they have specific store requirements then they should detail this clearly in ads if not then stiff bickies for JB.

      • Parra Westfield didn't take a mobile phone camera, I had to buy a cheap $8 disposable one from Kmart.

  • one 600d with single kit lens left at elizabeth street but apparently someone has already put that aside.

3 at springvale and there is at least 1 at chadstone.

  • Awesome post just grabbed a 600D body only. I had a Nokia N8 to trade in which I thought was too good so managed to buy a webcam from Woolies for $4.99 and used that!

Great buy…now to get the nifty fifty and maybe look for a kit lens cheap on eBay - this will tide me over while I save for some real lenses :)

  • Hey ftweet, is there any chance you can scan an image of your receipt for the twin lens kit for $746.00. Anybody else able to get that deal?

    • They offered me $820 for twin lens & not need to trade in.
      I'm still hesitated.

    • +5

!!!!!!!!just got the Twin for $678! (including the trade-in)!!!!!!!!!

      http://imageshack.us/a/img594/1078/photo1du.jpg

      • Wow that is a great deal I got the twin kit for 710! If they are out of stock on the 1 lens kit I think its safe to say u can work out a deal for the twin kit 600d package!

        • Kogan.com has the twin kit for $739 +$39 for shipping
          http://www.kogan.com/au/buy/canon-eos-kiss-x5-600d-twin-is-l…

        • thanks, kdavies. i managed to price match using your receipt. the first jb i went to called the bunbury store to ask why they sold the kit that cheap as it was way below their "cost". after finding out it was a kogan pricematch, they didn't want to do it. but the second jb store i visited matched it without questions.

        • In QLD, they didn't accept WA receipt.
The same guy offered me $811 or $711 with trade in

      • Thank you kdavies I managed to get this matched at the JB Hifi in Westfield in the Sydney CBD. You're a champ man - very happy. Hope you get lots of awesome gifts this Christmas.

Anyone in Sydney wanting to match, I have a receipt now from the Westfield store, pm me if you need a copy.

        • Hi, I can't seem to pm you,do you think you can upload your receipt here?

      • Thanks for the upload, after driving around, JB in Midland was willing to match after speaking to his manager.

Cannington and Malaga werent willing to match as they said it was below their floor cost.

The guy tried to sell me whatever accessories he could, I felt bad and bought a $59 carry bag.

Midland Kmart had disposables for $16. Apparently 600D body only sold out in WA. However they appeared to have good stock levels of the 600D twin lens kit stacked up.

  • DSLR newbie here - If I get the body, will my old lenses that fitted onto my Dad's old Olympus OM10(film camera) work on the 600D?

    • +2

Short answer: no. Each brand has their own lens mount system. You could pickup an adapter off ebay though (if avail.).

      • Thanks. did some googling. Looks like the new lenses are more suitable for digital photography as well.
Probably better to trade in my crappy old Nikon Coolpix 990, which cost me close to a grand over 10 years ago.

  • +1

just got mine for $530 with trade in. he did it cheaper and I didn't even ask for it. Legend!

    • +1

C'mon you can't tell us the story and not tell us where?!

  • Just bought the 600D at JB after I traded in a $8.50 disposable camera that I bought from Big W. Thanks OP.

  • Bought the display model in springvale Vic. None left there. Glen waverley also sold out.

  • Hi guys I ended up getting a 60D at JB today instead. Problem is I've got Nikon mount Tamron lens. Will a adaptor damage the lens or the camera? Please help

Because of this I'm a little unsure if I should have added a bit more money to get the Nikon D7000 instead…

    • If its a specially made adapter it will work, but the AF & other functions might not.
If you're still worried about it, best return it & get the D7000 to save yourself the headaches.

  • Got probably the last Canon 600D single lens kit from Melb elizabeth st yesterday. They have memory 20% off aswell. Anyone know a good place I can take some lesson in photograph and Dsrl in melbourne? I am a newbie. Thanks.

  • There doesn't seem to be any body only 600D's in stock anywhere in Sydney :(

    • Liverpool JB Hifi has 1 left.

  • jbhifi didn't allow me to trade in for Body Only.. they said the promotion is only for camera with lens set. i didn't press further..

    • I traded an old camera phone for body only, no problem.

  • Thanks kdavies! Used your receipt and I'm sure they ran a background check on me and the girlfriend… Got the salesperson quite flustered after he had to honour the receipt and I refused the bag? Extended warranty? Screen protector? Memory? :-)

  • Got my 600d at JB blacktown for $465, price matched with an online store, camerapro.net. They have a store front in victoria as well that's why they happily oblige. Good deal! :) they don't have it stock though, i have to wait till wednesday for it. But it's alright, not in a hurry anyway. :)
