Will this one play classic arcade games like wonder boy or silkworm , ok?

  • +4

    Great post OP!

    Found it slightly cheaper here for anyone interested;

    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006152991376.html#

    • Only if you don't want the purple model.

      • What about the transparent orange?

  • +1

Aargh, I just bought it for $85.

But really liking it so can't complain too much

    • Oh damn! I got the rg35xx plus for $100 so we all over paid for something haha

      • +2

Me too, but can’t complain as the kids have not stopped using it.

      • +1

The rg35xx plus is better overall though, wifi / bluetooth, hdmi out - i would rather have that for $100. Only advantage being the analog sticks.
I am waiting for the RG35XXH, which has all these in a horizontal layout.

  • Does this have HDMI out? It looks to say video out via USB C. Anyone confirm?

    • Some reddit users comments leads me to believe no video output but have a little google yourself, I would love to be wrong as that would be a great addition to this device!

      • I was sure it was mentioned in Retrocorps setup, but maybe I'm thinking of the R35. Let me check the video again. Edit: Yes, my apologies, I can't find it anywhere in the video that it's USB-C to HDMI

Edit2: It was the RG353 that had working USB C to HDMI.

        • But the picture says otg and play at higher screen?

    • +2

I just tried it with a usb-c dock and it doesn't work.

    • +1

If it has video out via USBC then you just need a USBC to HDMI cable 👍

      • Awesome thanks!

            • @xaykogeki: Soul silver on a phone emulator is close to perfect imo

    • This comes with most of them.

    • +3

The ROMS and micro SD card that it comes with suck. Get a 64gb/128gb card & load with your own roms.

      • Without being jumped on , what’s the best roms to use on this? Just mainly want arcade games.

        • That will be fine. Look up what arkos can support.

    • Does OG stand for original - I have always known it to stand for original gangster!

      • +1

It's original gangster. Those original games are gangster (good). No cap.

  • I have the RG35xx (not Plus version). Anyone have both and can comment if the R36S is worth getting too?

    • +3

This won't offer that much more than the 35xx. I wouldn't get this as well unless you're really after analog sticks.

      • +2

I have the RG35XX and I don't think it's worth getting this. Only bonus is the analogy sticks. I suppose if you play PS1 games alot and some PSP (this won't play all Psp) it might make a bit of sense.

But this isn't that much of a leap above the RG35XX.

It's sub $60 though so not that exp.

        • +1

Yeah, at that price I'm tempted just to have a play around with it. I already have multiple similar devices though so I'd better hold off haha

          • @Orion au: Haha for what it is it's super cheap.

I'm also tempted but really I have no reason to but it but just because it's cheap.

        • +3

Even n64 games will benefit from the stick

        • +1

I had the RG35xx and sold and got the R36S cos I needed the analog sticks. PS1 as you say.

Got mine for 65 so still reasonable.

        • Thanks all. Think I’ll save my $$$ and pass on this one.

    • +2

I got this one after having an RG35XX!

It’s worth it for the price, N64 and some PSP games was all I felt was missing.

  • +8

I got one just before Christmas. Highly recommended to use branded SD cards once you get it. It looks like it should have wifi but it doesn't. I tried with an OTG usb dongle and a usb wifi dongle but had no joy. In the end I connected it to a mobile via tethering to update the software (mine came with ArkOS from 2022). It's a great machine for the price. Works great on PS1 stuff, some Dreamcast and Saturn. Easily does anything older like NES, SNES, Genesis and most arcade games up to early 90s. Even things like Spectrum, C64 and Amiga work great.

Like most of its ilk, you have to mess around a bit with cores to get N64 at a decent frame rate. Also managed to get Stardew Valley working via the portmaster app.

    Unresolved Reports
    1 for Illegal/Inappropriate

Sook of the week goes to…?

    • +23

Was me. There’s nothing illegal about these devices, in fact I own a 351V.

However, the only reason there allowed to be posted here is because mods can make the assumption that copyrighted games are aren’t included on the provided sd card. But clowns here keep asking the same dumb question over and over again “does it come with <insert some high profile Nintendo game here>”.

Ozbargain can’t be seen as promoting copyright infringing products and dumb comments will eventually results in a blanket ban of these devices. Which would be a shame if a bunch of people too lazy too Google ruined it for everyone.

      • +15

You should report the individual comments that are infringing then.

        • +7

Once it’s been flagged that the device comes with illegal roms, the deal as a whole becomes inappropriate.

Don’t blame me, blame the people who announced the fact in the comments.

Edit: here come the clowns voting me down for stating facts. Yet the people who ruined the deal because they were too lazy to read if it came with *** game or spend two minutes Googling where to source ROMs don’t get voted down.

    • -1

On the other hand, I doubt they have their RCM.

  • Thanks op. Don’t forget to add a case for $3.43

  • +6

Use this URL to get it for US$38.77 (~A$57.19).

    • +1

Or if you have 71+ AliExpress coins then it'll be US$38.31 in OP's link.

    • But you don't get the $4.5 off every $30 and can't use your coins

      • Best to read both comments before replying ;)

    • show $210 AUD now :(

  • Do the emulators on these enable video filters?

  • Worth it!

  • this or an x50 with bigger screen ? not that worried about cost more enjoyment when using.

    • Of this 2 options, I'd go for this. If a bigger screen is required, I'd think about looking at an Anbernic or a Retroid device

  • -1

    Is this an anbernic?

Retro Handheld Buying Guide - RG35XX Plus / R36S / Miyoo Mini Plus / RG35XX by Taki Udon

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIdTcgI24YA

The 4 most popular handhelds in this particular price range.

  • +3

I've got this. It's pretty awesome although the buttons aren't the greatest. For some inexplicable reason it doesn't like pd charging and needs to be charged with a usb a to c cable.

    • They all like that even the RG35xx

    • What would you recommend that has better buttons?

      • +1

Sorry, this is my first retro handheld so I'm not really able to comment. That said, overall I'm actually very happy with this purchase. I found my old gameboy advance the other day and was amazed by how tiny the screen was, it's far better on a retrohandheld.

  • Goddam just bought for $65 last night

  • Just wondering, could this play game cube games?

    • +1

      no

    • +1

Look up a Retroid Pocket 2S as a minimum for GameCube. Even then you're not gonna get every game playable.

  • Bit the bullet and got a ROG Ally because every time I try to buy one of these, my order magically gets cancelled. Not meant to be 🥲 Just need to find a power bank to make the ally actually portable lol

Also, aren’t we waiting for the plus with wifi anyway?

  • So I got the anbernic RG35XX (weird name) and thought it was decent, but that the screen was a bit small.

I had a look around and found this: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005423393058.html

7 inch touch?! screen for around 70 bucks. Does anyone have any experience with these?

    • +2

I wouldn't go near the x70. It's cheap for a reason. The screen looks pretty basic in terms of quality, the controls look bad if you want to play anything like fighting games. It lacks power once you start getting to psx emulation too. Powkiddy are pretty bad with after sales support, if you have issues.

    • Google some reviews… I'd avoid, the screen looks a bit rubbish.

    • Ok, but are there any decent options for a budget handheld with 5 inch+ screen?

      • Not really, if you still want decent support, controls, quality of screen etc. The x55 might be what you're after, but you'll be going over $100 for it.

  • +3

I spent two days setting this up. Most of my time copying roms into the right folder. Follow this guide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1MQZVG8Dy8

Keep the original SD card as is in case you screw up. It is does it get confuse if you go from 2 sd cards into 1.

Finally, I find nintendo DS and under/older is where it runs right. PSP, n64 and psp can be abit buggy.

    • Can I not just play the card supplied?

      • +2

The cards are junk and fail often.

      • Don't have personal experience with a card failing. But every video and guide I read, said to replace the cards. The cards are not branded.

After spending some much time setting it up and especially transferring the roms. Scrapping the boxes of the roms to look pretty. I wouldn't want to go through it again due to a dead card. Also I imagine the save state of the games will be on the card too. So imagine burning 20 hours into pokemon and the card is dead before you could finish.

        • Did a bit of research and have bought cards for games and OS. Tutorial for ark Os seemed pretty straight forward so I’ll try that.

        • Yeah I'm having a lot of issues with scraping. Downloaded the tiny best set and scraping via the R36s directly a lot of games aren't found/being scraped.

            • @PainToad: Yeah thanks. I also tried that and it was taking forever. Might need to try it again.

              • @beaver2233: it very slow. I did it per folder. Most of it is got discovered. I also used a usb c to ethernet port as i didn't have a working wifi dongle. That might have helped.

                • @adn: Yeah for some reason I'm having problems with snes games. like 90% of them aren't being found/scraped. No idea why. Other systems/platforms seem to be fine (mostly).

Edit: worked it out. The games in the tiny best set are defined as SNES, though they're actually NES. Moved the games from SNES to NES and now they're all scraping :)

                  • @beaver2233: I get the OS thing but the games are bamboozling me. Bios files , what the hell.

  • +4

Thanks OP… now being lectured by my 18 yo on how many dang games I need. Simples. I need all of them. Soz son.

    • +4

the best part is scrolling through trying to find that one game you want to play but never do, you just keep scrolling.

      • +2

        So, like watching Netflix

        • yep.

      • +1

So true. I transfer so many game and only play pokemon heart gold.

  • +1

Good stuff OP, I also saw the post on r/SBCGaming with this find.

Would totally get another but would have to be orange.

  • This or miyoo mini plus?

  • +1

    Thanks OP!

  • +1

    Buy now think later Thanks

  • Hi OP, I've seen a few posts on these handhelds and my ozb trigger finger is itching.

If this model is entry level, what's the absolute top end model? Thank you
