    • Maybe you should wait a bit longer before you get one if that's your logic.

  • +1

Does anyone know if having an AMEX corporate card impacts eligiblity?

  • -3

Wow! That is very high annual fees. How come such a large votes? Is everyone planning to cancel straightafter or high large annual fee a norm now?

Just curious what is the best rewards based credit card with $0 or less than $100 annual fee? I am guessing like Coles or Woolworth cards?

    • +3

      What is better?

Spend $0 and earn $50 or spend $375 and earn $1,400.

    • +2

Did you read what the benefits are? Arguably breaking even BEFORE you get 100,000 points given what it gives you.

  • Anyone know whats the maximum amount of velocity points you can earn per month? Some credit cards limit to 3k or 5k points per month even if you spend more money.

    • +2

The AMEX web page for this card literally states this in the Benefits Section: 'Enjoy uncapped points earning potential with no limit on how many Velocity Points you can earn.'

  • Hi all, does anyone know what would fall under eligible purchases to meet the $3k mark? E.g. would paying the GP count towards it?

    • I read the T&C and what constitutes eligible spend are clearly listed and I think BPAY payments, rates and taxes etc are included as eligible spend. Paying GP should be ok….I think?

      • I read them too - the Velocity T&Cs at clause 3 - seems to be okay… I just wasn't sure if hospital treatments fall under 'goods and services'.

  • What is the policy re pro rata refund of annual fee?

    • +1

No pro rata refunds with Amex.

  • The 100 Status Credits is also a rare feature for a credit card offer (albeit you need to spend $50k in the first year)

    • Wonder if it works on something refundable - not that I'd be game to try lol

  • this or the NAB velocity offer? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/784275

    • +2

      Both.

      • good chance to be approved for both at the same time while having a CC already? (so 3 active CC's on credit file). Usually i just churn one CC at a time

        • +2

Impossible to say without your entire financial details, but Amex and NAB are two of the easiest providers to get approved by.

If you have to prioritise, Amex's offers are more fickle, so I'd go them first.

  • Thanks OP, I remember this deal from a few years ago and how good their customer service was when booking the flight redemption over the phone. The final screen of my application glitched and they rang me within thirty minutes to approve in real time over the phone!

  • +2

    Does this stack with referral?

  • has any been approved recently? Do you get conditional approval or confirmation email first?

    • Was asked to provide additional payslip yesterday which I did, today is day 2, no approval yet

      • did you provide a payslip initially? I haven't given anything

        • yes I had, at the end of application process there was option to upload supporting doc, I uploaded my slip but it was not the latest one, so they asked me to provide one more payslip yesterday

          • @ujwols: Declined - Very high credit score as per credit savvy.

Doesn't make sense. Was with Westpac black 2 months ago.

    • Applied yesterday evening and almost instantly got email and text message asked for uploading proof of income. Did it immediately and received the card approval email around midday today. Pretty impressive, the whole process took less than 24hrs and hassle free. I cancelled my Westpac black about two months ago, so no active CC before the application.

      • Same experience except I had an ANZ open until yesterday as well, but cancelled it just a few mins prior to applying for this (so technically I didn't have to bother declaring that I had it open once I had the confirmation it was closed by ANZ). I was worried they would complain and see the ANZ card in the credit report or something (it's still there as "Open") but nope, got the approval.

    • I got approved pretty much as part of the application form, when I clicked submit, it said you've been approved. So in short, quickest approval of any credit card I've applied for.

  • Anyone been approved after being told theyll be notified of the decision in 5 to 10 days?

    • Thats rejection. I got the same. I called and found out its rejected.

      • Thought so, damn it.

      • +1

        rejected too.
I got an application declined in November so Amex said anymore applications will be automatically rejected.
I can only apply again 90 days since November, which is 13th February :(
        Will miss this deal :(

        • +1

Good to know about the 90 days rule

    • Yes. Approved after receiving this email notification of '5 to 10 days'. I called up, they needed some additional supporting documentation. Subsequently provided, and approved when the Phone Rep reviewed.

      • Did you wait 10 days before calling. I applied on Sunday and haven't heard anything yet but don't know if it's too early to call.

        • I called them the next day because I'm impatient and wanted to get ahead of any questions/automated processing. Fortunately weren't strict with enforcing a wait time.

          • @shift6: Gave them a call and got rejected, but sending the rejection through the post instead of email lol

    • I called them today after waiting two days. They confirmed I was rejected. First time ever for me. I had recently worked through 3 or 4 cards since September, so that is probably their reason why. I had been with AMEX about 20 months ago as well so it was a pretty obvious churn. Still pisses me off having this rejection on record and missing out on this great deal. Will need to take it easy for 6 months or so and will avoid AMEX in future.

  • Can I get the bonus points if I previously had a business Amex card in the past 18 months?

  • Are Apple gift cards part of the eligible spend?

    • Yes, if you are buying Apple GC from a shop (e.g. supermarkets, BigW, AusPost, etc) or from Apple directly.

  • Mine got approved.
Submitted application last night and got approval email this morning.

  • Income requirement is not clear. Friend with combine 100k income gets rejected. Not sure why

  • This is a good deal. I wonder if it's a sign Amex are going back to their golden days of sign up bonuses?

  • When can you access the free return flight after approval? I have a CBR-BNE trip in March.

How restrictive are they flight options?

    • Nevermind. Find the answer. After first spend.

      • Any idea how long after first spend you can access the complimentary flight portal?

  • Application rejected even without asking for any documents like payslips etc, interesting approval criteria

    • What's the criteria?

      • No idea, outright rejection without asking questions, anyone can provide some insights into this ?

        • same but you can ask for it to be reassessed. Another week.

          • +3

@ilovefood12345: I found out I was rejected as well after calling. The guy on the phone just said "due to overall assessment". He said no point getting reassessed and to try again in 90days.

            • +1

@lemonteh: its so annoying as its the finance team we need to speak to. I had the dame as for virigin

  • This or Qantas deal?

    • +3

IMO really comes down to preference on Velocity or QFF programs, and view on Reward Seat availability between the two.

Perhaps one consideration for the Qantas is if someone is gunning for, or finds value in getting the Points Club Plus program after hitting 350k points earn in a membership year. The complimentary Qantas Club Membership & SC rollover might be of interest to some, and 100k is a decent step towards this.

  • where can i find what purchases are eligible? i wonder if paying off strata or buying amazon gift cards are ok?

edit: just checked, gift cards do not count. However i cant find anything about bills

  • Application rejected due to income. Repsonse sent via mail for some reason.

  • If I were to use the referral link, would i then lose the 100k sign up points and only receive what is offered via referral, or would it be 100k bonus plus additonal points from the referral link?

    • Only the referrer gets the points for the platinum card.

So you'd still get 100k, but they would get 40k

      • +1

Appreciate the reply. Onto it today

  • This card is apparently not eligible for Amex Offers, and I only saw this when comparing to Qantas Ultimate card.

    • I'm not sure where you saw it but one of the guys at work applied for this a couple of months ago and he's definitely getting AmEx offers.

      • It would make sense that it'd have it, but I was on Amex's own site and used their "Compare" feature, and under Amex Offers, there's a "-" whereas the Qantas Ultimate and Platinum Edge, for example, have a tick.

    • This card definitely gets Amex offers

  • Can I use the lounge passes with another person travelling?

  • Rejection letter said I was rejected based on credit report, the letter says I can download and check it. My credit score is "excellent". I only applied for a 5,000 credit limit while I'm on an income of 90k and have very low living expenses and large amount of savings and very little debt ( only last months credit card).

Wish I could know the real reason for rejection because none of this makes sense, I don't understand why I would be rejected.

    • same as mine, it's puzzling

    • +3

      My thoughts:

      • A credit score rating of 'excellent' vs. 'very good' etc. has little weighting - I don't think FIs pay much attention to this value, but more on other aspects. Just because one has an 'excellent' rating doesn't mean they should be eligible to take out a credit card with a $100k limit because income is a more important factor on ability to repay
      • If pursuing a card for short-term purposes and don't need a higher limit, I would typically suggest going for the lowest available limit (which in this case should be $3,000). Else never know whether that $2,000 was the amount that tipped your overall profile over the edge.
      • You might have low living expenses, but I'd speculate that some FIs (as they do for home loans using the HEM - Household Expenditure Measure) might use other indicators as part of the decision process. I would guess that if if your expenses are too low, then there might be a red flag as well in terms of whether someone is truthfully representing their position
      • You might have ample savings, but ultimately a credit card is unsecured
      • Having an open balance for a credit card (not paying in full each month) sounds unusual/not advised. Also, perhaps this card has too-high a balance against your income when they did the assessment for another card.
      • If they're pointing to the credit report, double check you don't have any negative events or black marks
      • The real reason/decision process is likely to be somewhat opaque most of the time
    • had a similar situation. got rejected for the amex explorer 3 times for some reason so I've not applied for it again (they were >3 months apart each time).
applied for this card right after I got rejected for the explorer, and it was immediately approved with no hassles (I think a single payslip was all I uploaded…)

For those wondering which return flights you can book for free: americanexpress.com/australia/campaigns/velocityplatinumflightmap

It's otherwise quite hidden in the T&Cs and notably, you can book return flights starting from Perth to the east coast but not the other way round.

    • is there a $ cap to the return flight cost for the complimentary flight?

      • Used to depend on the type of the fare, you could book any saver type fare. I would call and ask before strating the flight search.I would say it would equate to "Choice" type fare, regardless of cost.

  • Approved after a request for additional documents. I sent my NOA (with TFN blocked out). Approved pretty quickly after that.

  • Does anyone know how long the approval (assessment) would generally take for this card, once application is submitted with support documents uploaded? Thanks : )

    • Few days seems to be the norm. You can also call to give them a nudge if in hurry.

      • if I nudge by calling do you think they would get annoyed and just reject ;D

        • i called after 4 days and was told it has been rejected and the letter is on post lol.. wonder why they dont use email

    • Update: called Amex one day after uploading the supporting document and they checked the supporting documents on the call and got approved.

  • Unsuccessful even without even a credit check on my file.. lol

    • it's taken a month for it to appear in the past. not sure if its the same though.

also, not a strong offer from virgin. used to include ~120-140 status credits which they've cheaped out on.
the flights are only a return flight for a single person, unlikely qantas amex which is $450 credit which is best for international flights which essentially is the annual fee
best earn rate for velocity but are any of us really using it for earn? rather churn…
was initially going to sign up to this card again for the 100SCs/year to help maintain gold but at 50k spend is a little high for an Amex card (surcharges and whatnot), and 100sc for $375 not really worth it either ($3.75/SC). would rather fly business and enjoy that (as low as $2/SC when double SCs promos occur). no deal from me unless they bring in the SCs for signing up again.

  • +2

I wonder why they’re rejecting people with perfectly good credit history ☹️

  • Got the 7-10 days.
Great credit history and salary. Maybe its my 10k Virgin card still active. Wonder when I can apply again or just leave AMEX alone

  • Currently have 2 credit cards 10k+20k
    And got approved
    My score is reasonable
    Had amex 2 yrs ago

    • when did you last apply for a card? wondering this as it seems amex don't like churners

  • I am going Japan in April, can I purchase $3000 AUD in Yen with this credit card and it'll work for eligible spending for the 100k VFF points?

Edit: Nvm saw terms and condition, no foreign currency as eligible.

  • Applied last night, sent through payslip, got approval email today.

    • Same here. Got the "5-10 business days" email about 30 minutes after applying, and got the approval the next afternoon.

      • May I know which email did you use? I've been waiting for 2 weeks and still haven't heard anything back. Cheers

        • I submitted my payslip through the web, not via email. There was a link to it on the email they sent me.

  • +2

Could not fault how easy the application process is and how quick the bonus is awarded compared to non-Amex cards
    - 3 Jan applied
    - 4 Jan approved
    - 10 Jan(ish) received card
    - 22 Jan minimum spend reached (front loaded a lot of upcoming expenses)
    - 26 Jan bonus points (plus points from regular spend) dropped into my Velocity account

All of this before my first statement period and annual fee being charged

    • Are the bonus points rewarded weekly or monthly on the 26th of every month or how does it work? Because i also got some points awarded on the 26th Jan but ive just made the 3k spend on the 28th, so will i be rewarded weekly from 26th Jan, so the 2nd of Feb? Or will i be rewarded on the 26th of Feb occurring monthly? Would anyone know please? TIA

      • +1

Bonus points appear to be awarded monthly in tandem with points from regular spend. So in your case the bonus likely to be credited around 26 Feb.

  • Didn't hear anything for days and then got mail today with rejection. Would rather them just email it instead of wasting 1/100000th of a tree and dozens of man-hours to get a letter to me.

  • At what point is the credit check? I entered my details on the first page, clicked 'save and continue' and then it said that it was performing a credit check. That seems premature considering that I hadn't clicked 'submit' on the final page.
