this is handy with the flybuys bonus points for the apple gift cards.

  • +1

Doesn’t seem to work on AOC education store sadly.

    • +1

      Never does

    • Still a cheaper option than AOC…if you can use the cards

      • Yes, and you can leverage the 20% off Applecare+ from this promotion.

        • Can you explain how you do that? When I go to buy AppleCare using the AOC link, it still shows the full amount (mac Macbook Pro 16" $649).

          • @mgguinne: Ok, I see why. I bought my Macbook before Xmas, which was not during the promotion, damn! Temped to return it and get a new one just so I can save some $$, but a lot of hassle

"the eligible product and AppleCare+ are purchased directly from an Apple Store or the online Apple Store for Education during the promotional period only and cannot be combined with non-promotional Apple Education Pricing"

            • @mgguinne: You can refund and re-purchase your Mac without having to reset it (or worry about payment since you can have it refunded onto a gift card, which would be used to re-purchase it).

        • +2

Please share how to buy discounted apple care

          • @jackking: you will need to have student ID for that I think?

            • @slipperypete: Thanks. If I get access to it, how would I go about getting discounted apple care?

              • @jackking: I can't remember exactly, but if you google Apple Care student discount, it should show something. I have it but can't remember who I got it

          • @jackking: I think if you go into a store and show your ID, they can discount it?

          • @jackking: I had to call up to purchase the discounted apple care the last time this promo was on. Online chat should work too.

          • +1

@jackking: Since AppleCare+ cannot be purchased together with a product in Australia, Apple has outlined the following method as a workaround for the deferred sales rule:

            • Buy a Mac or iPad from this deal during the promotional period.
            • Wait for the 7-Day Complimentary AppleCare+ coverage to expire.
            • You now have 10 days to purchase discounted AppleCare+ upfront. *Discount does not apply to subscription AppleCare+.
      • Was looking at a MacBook and it works out cheaper to buy from AOC with 5% discounted gift cards. Looks like it may vary depending on product.

        • which model?

why only 5% gift cards and not the 20x flybuys (~10%)

        • +1

I looked at both. Why not use discount cards here and still get the Apple Gift cards.

        • Can’t see any that this applies to

      • +2

Just contacted an Apple purchase specialist, TL;DR you cannot use the gift cards towards the current purchase.

Me: Hello, as stated above I was wondering if I could use the gift cards received from buying the iPad via the "Save on iPad Pro with education pricing. Plus get a A$160 gift card.◊◊" promotion, towards the iPad.

Agent's Message: To answer your question, the Apple Gift Card that comes together with the iPad that you will purchase under Education Discount can be use towards your future purchase.

Me: So there is no way to use it towards the current purchase?
Agent's Message: That is not possible since the Apple Gift Card will be sent once the order has been shipped.

Me: What if I went in store?
Agent's Message: That is the same process as Apple Online and Retail Store has the same terms and conditions for the on-going promotion for Education Discount.

        • +2

this seemed like a good deal but since there's nothing else I'd want to buy on the apple store, i'd be stuck with a gift card that I won't use.
maybe you can buy the ipad, then return it, then use the gift card to buy again? lol

    • Do Apple gifts cards not work on the AOC store?

      Was looking at buying this:

      https://www.apple.com/au_edu_5000447/shop/buy-mac/macbook-ai…

      • +3

        they do work on AOC

      • +4

Do Apple gifts cards not work on the AOC store?

You can use them at the AOC, but you won't receive these bonus gift cards if you buy via AOC.

    • Do cashbacks work on AOC though? Just wondering

    • +1

      What does AOC stand for?

      • Apple on Campus.

        • What does that mean?

          • +1

@muddytyre: An Apple Store on Campus or online store meant for purchases made for on campus use.

            • @PainToad: Thanks. Never seen anything like that here in WA, but I am starting university this year so that might be why.

      • Finally a sensible question

      • Notably Medicare for all, Housing rights, Justice for workers and small businesses, Gun control.

(She's a real troublemaker this one)

  • +9

Waiting for new iPads to come out before I think about upgrading

  • Can we buy from retails and still get this offer? Need a Macbook for this year high school student loan.

    • No but you can try to get them to price match a retail store I suppose.

    • Keen to know this also but from the Ts&Cs, "Apple Store locations, Apple Store for Education and 133-622" makes me think its only valid for purchases direct from Apple?

    • +2

I do not know what is the most surprising. Need a Macbook for high school ? Or need a student loan for high school ?

  • +2

If my maths is correct with current cash rewards and flybuys GC offers works out around $960 for MacBook Air M1. Not bad.

    • +2

      how does it work?

      • Id like to know too

  • +1

    No iPad minis 🥲

  • Anyone know when Cashrewards cashback will kick in? Would be good to stack

    • +1

Indeed. I was waiting to buy the iMac M3, but I would think it would be on the exclusion list for cashback. Still good to have $240 gift card. Effectively about $140 benefit against buying at AOC prices.

    • Whats the cashback amount?

      • Sometimes they have 8% cashback, but not at present

          • +1

            @PAFC1870: Jan 2023 :

            Cashback eligible with gift cards.

This is what I'm hoping for, and hoping not capped.

            • +1

@dangerdanger: @dangerdanger Thanks for pointing that one out to me. I misread that when i skimmed over the fine print, my apologies. Think i will have to take advantage of that even if it is only 1.3% or i may just wait and see if they have the upsized cashback. Thanks again, you're a legend :)

              • +1

                @PAFC1870: No problem.

I'm hoping to stack existing gift cards (all loaded onto my apple account) + this offer + cashback + maybe reimburse through work (or tax deduct).

No doubt some on OzB are calculating TRS (gst refunds) as well. Haha!

CR usually come out with a sweeter deal towards the end of the back-to-school promotion (mid-Feb / early march). If uncapped, would be better. But even capped at $100, I'll take that!

        • +1

@dangerdanger i emailed cashrewards support to see if they would be able to let me know if there were any increased cashback, unfortunately they didnt know. Their reply is below

Thank you for reaching out to our team. I hope you're doing well.

I'd like to clarify that all the offers advertised on Cashrewards are advertised by our partnered stores and not Cashrewards. Therefore, we are unable to confirm when the next Apple boosted cashback offer will be advertised. Rest assured that we will keep you posted on our latest offers as and when they are active.

I guess we just cross our fingers and hope. Im not in a huge rush to purchase, just need it before school starts back. I will leave it a week or two and pull the trigger then if no sign of cashback, although the day i give in is usually the day before they start their promotions.

          • +1

@PAFC1870: Agree, me too, don't need until school starts and even then - no harm in waiting 1-2 wks into the school term. They'll come through towards end of Feb / early March, I'll wait until then.

TA is "the man" and he / she will come through!

            • @dangerdanger: @dangerdanger i see shopback has 8% cashback. Not sure if we can use it or not with the giftcards as the t&c's only state

ThisCashback deal is not valid together with:
Promos or Vouchers not featured on ShopBack

Nvm looks like they updated their t&c's right after I cut & pasted the above. New t&c's below.

This Cashback deal is not valid together with:

Any Gift Card, Voucher or store credit purchase
Any Gift Card or Voucher redemption
Vouchers or Promo codes not featured on our platform
Any exceptions will be at the store's discretion

              • +1

@PAFC1870: Some of us prefer cash rewards, they seem to track better and respond to problems easier etc

              • +1

                @PAFC1870: Mate, it's here! 8% uncapped!!

                • @dangerdanger: Awesome :) i bit the bullett and ordered through shopback. The lad was nagging me about when he was going to get his Mac, and wanted to make sure i had it well and truly for school. My cashback tracked already, Mac has shipped & i have received my $240 giftcard.

  • Anyone knows where to get discounted Apple GCs to stack with this deal?

    • +4

Coles selling with 20x flybuys points

    • Ozbargain classified

  • +1

    A full-time or part-time student aged 18 or over
    not for high school

  • Any expert thoughts on whether the M3 MacBook Air is worth waiting for?
I’m guessing the price will rise and not sure how much extra performance it will give.

    • +1

What are you using it for?

    • +2

Depends on what you’re using it for but 90% of the time the answer will be no

      • +1

100% of the time the answer will be is it worth missing out on this $240 gift card to most likely get an extra year of macOS updates on a newer model.

Only the person spending the money can answer that.

    • +1

yeah depends what you're using currently. i've upgraded recently from an m1 air to an m3 pro and it's significantly better.

m1 air to m3 air with the same config? probably not a lot of difference.

      • Did you get the M3 pro chip or the standard M3 ?

        • Also wondering @jrowls

          How many cores?

        • +1

          m3 pro.

          @evasive re specs:

Apple M3 Pro chip with 12‑core CPU, 18‑core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine
          18GB unified memory
          1TB SSD storage

    • +1

But when you consider the second hand market in the future, it is obvious that newer Mac preserve around 20% more value.

    • +2

Hey thanks for the replies. I should’ve known contained better.
Currently own an M1 air with 8gb ram. People convinced me 8 was enough. It hasn’t been the case.
I do a lot of photos editing but not video so on the whole the newer air with 16gb should be adequate.
I’m also studying and tend to have a lot of tabs and applications open. Mine lags badly in this case.

I’ve heard there may be a bit of a cost increase.

I’m also looking at the M3pro chip in the MacBook Pro. Big price increase but it’ll last for a long time.

Funnily enough it almost comes down to a 14” vs 15” screen.

      • +2

If you stick with M2 unfortunately you’ll likely want to also upgrade storage to 512GB as the 256GB is sitting on a single NAND - which in real world use I’ve seen it be a little problematic with multiple tabs etc. There is lots of content online about how ‘crap’ this decision by Apple was for the consumer.

It’s a bit tricky. To get something meaningful you’d be looking at 16GB/512GB M2 Air, or just coughing up the extra for a 14 Pro - which has its own configuration issues (base 14 having 8GB RAM).

IMO - if your machine is running fine enough for now, I’d hold off. However the same could be said for about 99% of my purchases where I ignore my own advice lol.

      • +1

was in the same boat, had M1 Air with 8GB and it was great for everything except really bogging down in photo and video editing

I returned it, and got MacBook Pro 14 with M1 Pro (16GB / 1TB) from Apple Certified Refurbished, cost me $2539. base model with 16GB / 512GB was $2299. just wait till next drop of Apple Certified Refurbished, they are indistinguishable from brand new.

        https://www.apple.com/au/shop/refurbished/mac/128gb-16gb-32g…

they dropped another batch couple days ago, for instance Air M1 with 16GB and 1TB storage was about $2k, or makes sense to spend a bit more and grab a Pro as it comes with much better screen and speakers, and ports and everything pretty much.

speccing similarly an M3 Pro 14 inch even on AOC will be $3300 at least. I am super happy with my 14 inch M1 Pro
the last drop was already pretty much scooped up, monitor daily I am sure some more units will get added.

        • Hey

great find. I've been looking out on the refurbished page but there hasn't been anything with the right specs for the price so appreciate the post

          I'm looking at a 16Gb 512Gb option
It works out about $200 less taking into account the gift card

Now I have to think harder

          cheers

          • +1

@slipperypete: those M1 Pro 14 with 16/512 were available until a few days ago, hopefully more will be added soon, those were $2299.

I ordered one myself but cancelled and ordered 1tb version for $240 more looked like a sensible upgrade at a time..

funny enough refurbished 15 inch air with m2 and 16/1tb costed $2600+ which is obviously inferior to m1 pro in almost every way

          • +1

@slipperypete: is this what you were looking for https://www.apple.com/au/shop/product/G18S2X/A/refurbished-1…

            16 / 512 / Air 15 M2

a crap load of models got dropped to Apple Certified Refurbished tonight

1TB version is $2629 like last drop

however I would stop and think why so many people returned their 15 inches, with those high specs, too - can see lots of 16GB and 24GB unified memory

my guess would be - having no fan kinda suxx, and having all this RAM doesn't help the fact that CPU gets thermo throttled

I'd say stick around and wait till those $2299 pro 14's drop again, these are machines that will last you much longer

compared to pro 14 (even M1 Pro), Air 15 has: half RAM bandwidth (100GB/s vs 200GB/s), less CPU/GPU cores, no fan, inferior screen (lower pixel density, no mini-LED, no 120hz refresh), less ports - should I go on? no reason to pick up 15 inch one when you can have much, much superior pro 14 for less money

            • @shabaka: Hey, this actually works out more when considering the Gift cards

So does RAM cause heating issues? I quite liked the idea of no fan as I do a lot of work sitting on my bed which tends to wreak havoc with a fan.

I think I'm either gonna go for a refurb M2 Pro or just bite the bullet and get a new M3 Pro.

              Thanks heaps for your help

              • @slipperypete: yes it's slightly more, but you're spending less. gift card you have to spend at Apple, just tricking you to buy something else. up to you

does ram cause heating issues? no I probably mis-expressed that. the problem is that in airs there's no fan, so if you push your CPU and it doesn't cool on its own fast enough (hot day, or doing stuff in bed - no questions asked!), it just throttles, and system goes sluggish

so with 15 inch air it doesn't matter a lot how much ram you have, your CPU is going to throttle when you push it, if you do anything serious - for which you need that ram

so it doesn't make a lot of sense to get a higher spec 15 air, when you can have cheaper refurbished M1 pro 14 which is better in every way..

I was in the same boat deciding between 15 air and 14 pro. went to apple store and molested both. 15 feels like a toy, every air does. pro is my choice, especially at the price I paid..

                • @shabaka:

hot day, or doing stuff in bed - no questions asked!

haha. no, I just like to study in peace and quiet

went to Apple store and molested both

I'm hoping that was spell check.

Yeah, I think you've convinced me.

I don't think I will wait for the new M3 Macbook Air and will grab a Pro. Just gotta decide which one.

                  • @slipperypete: spell check? no no, that's exactly how it all went down

good choice, you'll love it. I hope apple restocks refurbished base m1 pro 14s, as power is aplenty there, no need to overpay for m2 pro or higher juiced m1 pro versions

        • "MacBook Pro 14 with M1 Pro (16GB / 1TB) from Apple Certified Refurbished, cost me $2539"

It looks like they have bumped up the price by more than $200 now

          • @icemanmelb: mine was 8c CPU and 14c GPU, the base M1 pro chip. those available now are more grunty M1 pro versions

same goes for the base version with 16/512 which went for $2299

I am super happy with the power, so I chose to bump up the storage instead of cores

  • Do Officeworks or JBhifi run this kind of promotion to match the price or value?
I've been waiting for new M3 ipad pro but getting hard to hold the horse.

    • Usually not. I don't see JB or OW giving away $$$ in the hundreds

  • Is the basic M2 Air any good for Davinci Resolve? Just want it for basic 4k video editing.

    • No. You'd better have Pros.

    • M3 Pro or Max for better GPU

    • +1

Absolutely. We used to edit 4K videos on Intel processors, and even the base M2 is more powerful than those. It won’t be as fast as M2/M3 Pro/Max but it’ll get the job done.

  • Just picked up MacBook air M1 16gb 1Tb yesterday from apple store. Haven't even opened yet. 😞

    • +3

Return it and order again. Simple.

      • +2

        Yes return.
Back to school offer happens every year though, don't know why ppl don't hold off

        • Doesn't matter if you've opened them or note - Apple will still take them

    • +3

Hey mate, I did the exact same thing. I called the support number and they gave me the gift card without needing to return. I just mentioned I was inside the returns window and they hooked me up.

      • Did u buy yours through education discount? I ended up buying direct from good guys as it was only a $40 saving yesterday and now a little miffed.

      • I called them earlier and the guy said he can't do anything about it and suggested me to return and reorder again. I was about to go to store to return it then I saw your comment. So, I called again and the lady said she can apply for the promotion to the order. Now I have to wait 1 to 2 days to receive gift card email!!!

        • Did you buy under education discount originally or not?

        • Have you got your gift card yet? I called them and was told to wait and I've been waiting for 5 days now and still nothing…

          • +1

@Dogless Bone: Not yet, they said it will take about 7days to process it manually. Hopefully by the end of this week.

    • +1

Got mine M3 Max 28.12.23 and called today. Got my $240 gift card. Easy.
