Alright now a question ive been wanting to ask for so long :

When looking for a protein powder, i always check first the amount of protein per 100g. So ive seen a lot of you guys choose to go with the famous Gold standard Whey or Isolate.

Taking as an example the Vanilla flavour, the Whey stands at 77g of protein per 100g.
The Isolate Vanilla is at 83g per 100g

Musashi chocolate is at the laughable amount of 43,3g per 100g.

And then there is this one, Natures Way that ive never seen anyone talking about, which is plant based , WAY cheaper and counts 87g of protein per 100g.

SO my question here is how come no one goes with this last one ? Cheap and using Soy protein in the blend (NV here https://www.coles.com.au/product/nature's-way-natural-instan… )

I just tried to google this after chatGPT was totally unhelpful, and I wouldn't expect a clear answer from a layman. It gets heavy on the chemistry very fast.

People still seem to be unfoundedly scared about soy protein messing with your hormones.

From what I've read, there's also some debate on whether it constitutes a full amino acid profile or not.

I also saw that whey may assist with metabolism and lean muscle, whereas soy assists more in tissue repair. That may be totally untrue however.

Taste is also a factor - the soy protein looks to be totally unflavoured. I think most people accept a slight decrease in percentage protein in order for it not to taste like sand.

Just my 2 cents. Hopefully somebody will annihilate my google-fu with the correct information

      • Taste wise I actually never used it just as is, but always mixed (either as a drink , milk and banana for example or for cooking , in a pancake mix for example).

      • Just curious

Do people drink protein shake because they cant eat appetite more meat

        • I do because I don't eat that much meat, and when I look at it I barely reach 80g protein per day.

    • Especially compared to ozb's fav Amino Z, whose WPI is usually $40/kg.

      • Used to use aminoz unflavored, they changed the protein base. I dont like the new ones and switched to uprotein isolate. Much easier to mix and digest due to digestive enzymes. Not looking back.

      PDCAAS

Plant based protein has a lower digestibility compared to milk or egg protein sources.

Also from personal experience plant based protein powders all taste horrible.

also once you drill down into the EAAs plants ones aren't anywhere near as good.

    • I know they rarely go on sale/discounts but have always been satisified with Bulk Nutrients Protein. Can get up to 90g per 100 with some of the unflavoured whey proteins.

Starts at $43/kg but goes down with bulk buys.

Based in tassie but I have had next day deliveries in QLD from them.

Drink it and you'll see why :)
You can buy unflavoured WPI if you want the protein % to be the max it can, otherwise steer clear of choc flavours as with the cocoa added the protein % comes down
You can get some flavours that are in the 80s still

But just make it fit your macros and enjoy a WPI protein that is actually enjoyable to eat?

The best diet is the one you enjoy and can stick to

      • WPI has an additional benefit that it has neglibible lactose, so less protein farts for those thusly predisposed.

        • I still drink WPI with milk, but just pop in a lactase tablet. just tastes better than water.

      • Macros, is it still 2g+ protein per kg bodyweight?

        • 2g per kg has been proven to be more than enough, can even get by with slightly less but 2g is a safe bet.

        • 1 gram per pound is usually good
Some do 1 gram per average of height in cm and weight in pounds

Pretty much aim for about 40% of your calories to come through protein

          • @jamestownfx: Oh i see than ks

            Was it the 40/40/20

            • @ATTS: 40 protein
              40 carbs
              20 fat

Depending what you like to eat you could increase fat and lower carbs a bit but wouldn't suggest less than 20% calories from fat
And wouldn't lower protein from 40%

Make a plan, stick to it, take photos and measurements weekly, only use the scale as a guide, weigh daily and worry about the 7 day average not the day to day fluctuations
If you're not seeing results (suggest max 1% fat loss a week) then adjust total calories down in same proportion or walk more or a bit of both and check again the week after
              Drink water

              /Rant 😊

    • Whey tastes better and mixes better.

Easier to digest (get the isolate if you are lactose intolarent)

Better usability because of better amino acid profile.

Soy was always used in Japan and other countries in fermented form not as an isolate. So not sure about long term affect.

There is a lot of debate about soy and increase in female harmone estrogen or phytoestrogen.

Also whey is promoted more by the meat industry. There is a lot more money there, So everyone says whey. Even though dairy based products are the largest allergens.

If you still want to go plant based, pea protein or mix of pea rice hemp etc would probably be better.
