Save money on a window seat by flying Alaska

      • It’s cheaper price flying Alaska?

        • +9

          Check the news.

          • @DingoBlue: we talking about price match?

Here's how our price guarantee works:
Purchase an Alaska Airlines flight here at alaskaair.com or alaskaair.com/easybiz.
Within 24 hours of buying your ticket, find the same flight and itinerary on another travel site, for at least $10 less than you paid.
Complete the price guarantee request form.

and if thats the case, then technically i can go with alaksa airlines, then i can go to hawaii and get them to refund the difference with a jetstar flight on sale?

            • +2

@prankster: Here's how our aircraft guarantee works:
              * Purchase an Alaska Airlines flight here at alaskaair.com or alaskaair.com/easybiz.
              * Within 24 hours of buying your ticket, find the door plug or side of plane in a backyard, for at least $10 less than you paid.
              * Complete the fuselage guarantee request form.

              • +1

@bdl: oh wow this is amazing, i have to try this next time i want to go to Hawaii then!

        • +1

cheaper and better view, can see more from plane

    • +4

We’ll yeah the hidden tax, now the 15-20% tipping required couple with our shitty Aussie dollar, a $10 USD burger will easily equal to $20 AUD 😢

I miss the good old parity days in 2012, wish I lapped it up more at my friends bucks at vegas - what a time!

      • Tipping isn’t usually required at burger joints such as In&out, maccas etc.

        • -1

oh yeah if you just go to only those places then its just the hidden tax and usd to aud conversion lol

      • +3

Well, a burger costs $20 in Sydney, so…

        • +3

suppose but it also depends where you go in states too, i was giving an example of 10 USD who knows it could be 15 USD there, but all i've heard from people that have gone is that definitely double the money required when spending there

          • +4

@prankster: From all I've seen and read online, the days of the cheap burger are over (same with most bargains we used to find in the States), with things often costing the same or more in USD as we pay in AUD, plus the hidden tax and the obligatory tip (15% is now seen as stingy btw, so greedy have they become - 20% is expected and many stupidly give 25-30%). And tipping is also surfacing on takeaway places, where you pay in advance.

            America sucks now.

            • @JohnHowardsEyebrows:

From all I've seen and read online

And herein lies the problem… do less of that…

              • +3

@1st-Amendment: I'm talking about YouTubers, documenting prices as they go, and comparing to my own experiences 5 or 6 years ago. The affordability of the country is no more.

                • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: yeah its sad and sucky right, i know usa has issues but what country doesn't right but usa does have some awesome people/places to see. i went travelling there in 2013 for 6 months and it was above 90 cents, really enjoyed it knowing i wasn't going to be crapped up by the aussie dollar and yeah back then it was 10-15% tipping so overall we were ok but yep nowadays i've heard 20% bloody hell

oh dont get me started with takeaway places, i saw a place that did that and i was like wtf i'm not tipping, what for ? to collect my food?

              • @1st-Amendment: What rubbish.

Another one who lives in an echo chamber by choice.

                Prices are easily found…

                https://mobile-cuisine.com/menu/in-n-out-burger-prices/

                For example.

                • @Eeples:

                  Prices are easily found…

Well you've just given us a perfect example an echo chamber in action. You only look at data that supports your existing view to convince yourself you are right.
I'm in California right now. Pretty sure I've already eaten many cheap burgers… But you stick with manufactured online anger and see how that works for you…

  • +1

Not bad, kinda works out the same as using 40-44k points + 150ish tax

  • How do the short transfers work (say 1hr 20 mins in SFO) when on the same ticket? Assume you have to clear customs at SFO

    • +4

Yes, that is correct, you need to exit international in the USA at your first stop within the states, whether you are remaining in the country or not.

      • Thanks, assumed so. Don't need that stress. Will look for a longer layover.

        • +1

Yep, it can be a total PITA!

          • @SimAus007: Moreso if you have a cavity search

            • +4

              @bdl: I might enjoy that.

            • +1

@bdl: All jokes aside, the TSA are incompetent savages. They take pleasure in pointlessly opening jars of liquids and pastes, then nkt sealing them properly, making all the contents of the bag messed up, and destroying what you bought.

        • +2

FWIW, its a bit different in the US vs here. Generally if you miss the connecting flight, the airlines there just put you on the next one at no cost. I wouldn't stress too much either way

          • +5

@Bargainitis: It's the same everywhere. As travel agents we can only book flights that meet the MCT (minimum connect time). If you try to book a pair of flights on the same itinerary and it doesn't meet the minimum the system will not allow you to proceed.

The key is it all has to be on the same itinerary / booking - or it becomes your problem.

For example for UA in SFO the MCT is the following:

            D/D means domestic to domestic
D/I means domestic to international etc

            T*CT-SFO/UAUA/ID

            STANDARD D/D…D/I…I/D…I/I.
            ONLINE .50 1.00 1.45 1.45
            OFFLINE .50 1.00 1.45 1.45

So the MCT from from one United international flight to the next United Domestic flight is 87 minutes.

If you miss your flight, you'll just get put on the next one at no cost. If you have travel insurance you might even be able to claim (for example Amex Platinum Charge covers $700 after 4 hours depending on the situation).

    • You won't make it

    • +10

I hope you find your way out of the echo chamber.

      • -2

        What do you mean?

        • He's in his own echo chamber and can't hear you…

      • +1

While I appreciate where you're coming from, suggest you do some research about such cities atm. Saw a video in Seattle the other day. You wouldn't believe how horrible the city centre has become.

    • Why would they not? They're great places to visit

      • There are many reports of rampant drug use, robberies and other crimes from there.

        • +2

Plenty of other cities in the USA have far higher crime rates. FS and Portland sit at 37th & 62nd when it comes to violent crime rates for example. I walked right through the drug riddled tenderloin a few times, and past camps ion Portland, and while it was shocking, they keep to themselves mostly.

Considering what these cities offer over some of the cities with higher crime rates, I'd say they're pretty alright. All that being said, there's no way in hell I'd live in the USA lol, but good to visit, especially SF and Portland.

          • @SkMed: San Francisco is 7th and Portland is 15th in total crime rate across the US.

That data is from 2019 and there are more recent reports of worsening crime in those two cities.

    • +2

I visited SF in November, thought I’d hate it given all these comments online but thoroughly enjoyed it and would definitely go back.

      • Hey @Rodger1, Did you get a rental car while you were there? Any issues with robberies or feeling unsafe?

With all the videos of smash and grabs into parked cars in SF, it's quite concerning and putting me off a potentially wonderful destination. Obviously, the news/social media shows the worst, but lots of the videos of the robberies are from 'nicer' neighbourhoods as well as tourist areas, so am keen to hear from your experience.

        • +1

No rental car. I drove in LA, Vegas, Florida etc. but you don't really need a car in SF.

The streets are very narrow and steep, parking is quite difficult and expensive. I stayed in Fishermans Wharf which is very touristy and doesn't give you the "true" experience but where I stayed had a very secure parking garage. Took buses and trams and cablecars around to see golden gate bridge, union square. Could get you anywhere really

I certainly wouldn't leave belongings in the car in the area, or at the golden gate bridge etc. But you also wouldn't do that in Chicago, or anywhere else really.

        • I Was in SF in 2011 and had a my rental car smashed while in a underground car park. Stole all night bags. My laptop through Microsoft security reported 4 days later it was in Columbia. Was CC insurance with cba so didn't cover electronics but some how covers Mrs make up.

          • @ajkaos: Nice precautions.

            What’s wrong with these people?

            Take some responsibility.

    • Was just in both in October. Tenderloin was pretty shocking to see in SF, but it's similar in all major US cities. The rest of the city was fantastic, Portland is an amazing green city with tonnes of amazing nature all around. I'm likely gonna go back this year tbh.

  • We'd all like to flee to the Cleve and club-hop down at the Flats and have lunch with Little Richard, but we fight those urges because we have responsibilities.

  • Bummer thought this was for 2025 dates 😞

  • REMEMBER: Qantas & AA are codeshare partners. On standard tickets, AU customers can carry 32 KG to the USA, but within the USA (domestic) weight limit is 23 KG (50 LBS), and they are pretty hard on it when it comes to enforcing and extracting more money.

  • +2

    Bummer, nothing to NY.

Few months back, managed to score Asiana SYD to JFK return for July/August 2024 around $1300 per person. Overnight layover at Incheon tho.

    • +1

      Great price!

    • +1

Nice Find, not much on east coast

    • what…. noooo! i missed out. those are pre-COVID prices. at least it's not completely RIP yet.

  • Wow thanks OP

note direct flights can take up to 17.5hrs!

  • No Orlando, Miami, or Tampa. looking to do a Disneyworld + Caribean cruise in 2024

    • +1

There were, but they are a touch higher so I didn't include them. Jan - march for $1453 which is still a great price. After that (April onwards) it goes up to around $1750, which is still not terrible.

      • Way better than anything I could find, thanks

  • The price of seat selection on United is crazy. An extra $70 to be allowed to select your own seat, and another $450 for an exit-row seat. So more than $1000 on top of the base ticket price to get an exit row seat round trip.

    • The price of seat selection on United is crazy.

They're all doing it now, that's how they make the advertised fare look so appealing, by charging like a wounded bull for everything else.
I'm flying there on Delta and it was the same. I'm also doing a couple of internal legs and one of them charged $60 for a carry-on bag. (Check-in bag was over $100). $60 just for me to carry my own bag onto the plane!
From memory it was something like $90 for the ticket, but if you had a carry-on bag, a check-in bag, and wanted to choose a seat it ended up being about $300. It's almost cheaper to fly with nothing then by your clothes when you get there.

      • +2

Try Southwest for internal flights. They don't come up on Google Flights for some reason but they have 2x checked bags free and cabin baggage included as well as free live tv streaming, free drink and a snack! Much much cheaper than the big names and very reliable

        • +1

I've flown Southwest a couple of times and they were excellent. We even missed our flight one time (slept in due to jet lag) and they just put us on the next one at no charge. Definitely recommend them when available.

      • United are taking the piss with those prices though. I flew overseas a couple of times last year and paid for exit row each time, and the prices were much more reasonable. Singapore charged me $130 each way MEL-SIN and Jetstar $90 each way MEL-BKK. I’m happy to pay extra but United are on another planet asking $500+.

    • +1

FWIW despite the questionable reputation, I had no complaints flying United in March last year. I was quite worried about losing my bags and even Airtag'd both but the United app actually lets you track them.

Regarding the seat situation, agreed that it's outrageous, but many of the paid ones become free just before boarding which I made great use of. I went from having seat neighbours to being able to sprawl out across a middle aisle I had to myself after a last minute change.

      • +1

do you mean you check online while waiting at the gate?

        • Yes that's right. I think some may open up at the 24 hour mark though?

    • 'Murica.

  • +1

All negatives going to Murica in 2024.
Tipping, wildly expensive, big cities are third world cities.
