    gained sentience, mr gpt?

Is the R7 really worth the extra $200?

    • +1

Worth it if your into light gaming

    • Not really. 760m is only 20% slower than the r7's igpu. It does matter in alot of games, but I imagine you're not likely to purchase this to be your main gaming machine.

That being said, if you're into emulation, this would be the best looking emulation machine you'll own. In that case, the 200 may be worth it.

The AMD 700M series apus also gained Fluid Motion Frames support announced by AMD yesterday which makes it even more interesting for light gaming :)

  • RAM expandable?

    • Nop. Wish it was. Everything else about this laptop is amazing. Also wish it came in black.

Thanks for reminding. 16G ram with integrated graphics…..NOPE

        • errr no, that video is from 32gb ram machine

16gb will struggle hard. The game hovers around 16gb system ram and 4gb VRAM

          • @Homr: Really? I had 16gb and a rx6800 and got the same FPS as benchmarks online. People are able to play it on handhelds which have less then 16gb ram.

            • +1

@lookingforadeal7: your rx6800 is a dedicated GPU so it will have its own ram

The 780m is an IGPU so it will take ram from the system ram

I play R6 Siege, BF, CS on a 680M laptop at the moment when i travel. No thermal issues, its been 6 months. Ill switch to a 780M laptop in the next few months.

Thanks for sharing. Your description says 2x usb c ports but the officeworks page says 1 x usb c. Can i ask where you copied the specs from? Apologies if ive missed something

  • Know this is not the same unit exactly listed - https://www.acer.com/au-en/laptops/swift/swift-go-14-amd
But mentions USB 4 eg Thunderbolt

Officeworks don't list this unit as being TB-capable. Does anyone know if this is actually supported on this unit, or just USB 3.2?

Was hoping a Ryzen 7X40 CPU-equipped laptop would have TB capabilities!

    • -1

No AMD laptop has TB. What specific functions of TB do you actually need over USB 3.2?

      • +2

This statement is incorrect. There are AMD laptops with USB4, which has the Thunderbolt 3 specification. There is no significant difference between TB3 and TB4 in terms of bandwidth.

      • -2

I already have a Nitro 16 (from OW) with 7640u that works fine on thunderbolts docks I have (with some laptop limitations) so you are completely incorrect

I already have a Nitro 16 (from OW) with 7640u that works fine on thunderbolts docks I have

Thunderbolt 3 docks are compatible with the USB 4 standard, so this laptop will work with your Thunderbolt 3 dock.

There are certain elements of Thunderbolt 4 and 5 which are not part of the USB 4 standard.

Dont need to answer why I need it, but I already have…

You asked the question, so don't be a lil shit. I asked your use case because that matters - it's not a matter of "does it have TB or not", because it doesn't (as an AMD laptop). If you'd just answered the question, i.e. that you need to plug it into a TB3 dock, then you would have gotten a straight answer - that it will work because it has USB4 (which you ended up getting anyway).

    • Bought the lesser version (7640u based) and supports USB 4. TB3 docks I have appear to work fine.

I’ve had this for 3 weeks so far.

I did not pay the officeworks price, got it from a reviewer who sold it to me for $990 + shipping. He had it for a week on his desk just to review, so the laptop was as good as new when it arrived at my doorstep.

It’s now my bedside laptop. For reference, I use it for non-intense productivity tasks. I’ve not tried gaming on this. My daily workhorses are still a Thinkpad X1/T480s.

For the price, I honestly can’t fault it. Some high and lowlights:

    The Good:
OLED screen is amazing. As a lifelong thinkpad user using only IPS matte screens, this was an eye-opening experience. Blacks are so black. Bezels are surprisingly quite thin for a budget laptop. It is however, reflective, doesn’t bother me as I don’t work with it outdoors in sunlight, but might be a consideration for some.
Weight and size are spot on. Light, compact but sturdy. 1.25kg is perfect for my travelling backpack. It also has smaller L x W dimensions than my 14” thinkpads as there’s less bezel on it.
Keyboard is decent. I thought I would absolutely hate this coming from thinkpads which are renowned for key travel. Transitioning across to this was seamless. Still typing at 90+ wpm.
2 slots for m2 ssds, apparently. Almost unheard of for laptops of this scale or price.
Good selection of ports. 2x usb c, 2 x usb 3.2, hdmi and even a microsd slot! Sorry can’t confirm if it has thunderbolt, not something I utilise.

    The OKs:
Trackpad. People complain about this a lot stating it’s too small. Doesn’t really bother me at all. I think the 2023/24 models have bigger trackpads, but not this one.
The case itself. Likely a preference thing, but I dislike the colour and wish it came in darker tones or black. The acer branding is an eyesore for me, I’ve blacked it out both outside and inside the case.
Finger print reader. Is also the power button but the placement is not the best, being right next to the delete button which I frequently use for a productivity styled laptop. The reader itself is actually quite good once setup properly.

    The Bad:
Soldered RAM of course. Wish this could be upgraded. I haven’t worked on any computer with less than 32gb ram for the past 5 years now >.>
Silhouette. It’s hard to describe this one, most premium laptops taper down from hinge to the lid opening, making the case slimmer. This one doesn’t, the chassis is not as nice and does feel budget.

    • Is it true to the advertised dimensions? I watched one Youtube reviewer who said the laptop is slightly thicker and heavier than the specs say.

From the side on pictures and how boxy it looks, it's hard for me to believe it's 14.9mm thick.

      • +2

        I just checked my unit.

        L X W: 31.2cm X 22cm
H: 18mm tapers to 16mm from back to front

        Weight: 1.318kg

L X W seems accurate, the rest is bogus.

        • Thanks mate!

    • Wow! What a real review! Thank you very much!

    • Would you still prefer the Lenovo thinkpads over something like this?

      • out of familiarity, likely. also for thinkpad specific features like the trackpoint and touchpad buttons that i use for work productivity. Maybe given more time, i can see myself confidently replacing it with the acer laptop or similar. it's much more value for money for the specs.

  • This or - this?

I'm not sure which CPU is better, but I just want a half decent media terminal with a flash screen to watch movies/shows/YT.

The one in your link is 16" laptop with an intel processor which may have less battery life compared to this AMD one which is much more efficient processor battery wise.

    • +3

The 13500h is a 45w TDP CPU. The 7840u is 15w TDP. So battery efficiency is going to be much better on the AMD. The AMD CPU also has much better iGPU graphics vs the Intel.

In terms of performance the 7840u is faster in Passmark and scores over 25000 vs 23000 of the 13500h.

      https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/5151vs5322/Intel-i5-135…

      • Ok, food for thought. Thanks. 👍

  • +1

I did my research, warzone will only be playable on 780m if you got 32gb ram. Part of the 16gb will be allocated to VRAM which will be about 6-8gb which will leave 8gbs for system ram which is not enough.

Buy this only if you plan to play games that requires less than 8gb system ram to run

    • Where'd you hear that? Everything I've read says it only has up to 4gb shared memory, which would leave 12gb for system.

Edit: Nevermind I think you are right. There is 4gb reserved for only the GPU but then it can allocate additional RAM up to max of half total system RAM (so 8gb). That means 16gb VRAM on 32gb machine provided the bios doesn't limit it. Crazy.

  • +2

Fark, it would be perfect if the RAM was upgradeable. Its 16gb soldered - which isn't enough since the RAM is shared with the onboard integrated graphics and the OS itself.

This or ASUS ROG Flow X13 Ryzen 9 16/512GB AMD Radeon Gaming Laptop grom OW?

    • +2

what are the chances? I own both. Recently got this one for myself, the Asus for my wife.

None of us game on these laptops.

The Acer OLED screen is nicer but the IPS on the Acer is no slouch either. It keeps up well, but IPS has its limitations where brightness and vibrancy is concerned.

The Asus feels a little more premo – case is much nicer to touch and is slimmer. Not a fan of the gaming font they use for the keyboard on the ROG though but if you’re using as a gaming laptop then maybe that’s right up your alley.

The R7 to me is the better CPU of the two for battery life and heat management. I still don’t understand why anyone would buy either laptop to mainly game especially with only 16gb ram on both. For productivity I always pick the latest CPU.

      • IS 0.6" difference in screen size noticeable?

        • +1

          you be the judge:
          https://i.imgur.com/Mak4Yht.jpg

(please note, i slightly 'modded' my acer by vinyl wrapping the trackpad and bottom bezel - by blacking out the acer logo - i reckon it gives the illusion the bezel is even slimmer and the screen seems more prominent)

so what you get at the shop is going to be different.

      • I am deciding on one of those two. Which one wouldnyou recommend? I dont game. Mainly for work and may travel with it.

        • Both are pretty matched for travel and productivity. They weigh roughly the same, the Acer is slightly lighter. I personally would pick the Acer for best value and newer tech.

          • @plentifoo: Thanks for your input!

            • @mtky: Yeah i think the Acer is better, lots of minor issues with the Flow, complaining about wifi dropout a lot and that sleep issue which drain battery and fan keep spinning while in bag!

          • -1

@plentifoo: Is any of these two sold at JB hi-fi? Might save a bit more with price match and gift cards. A link would be helpful.

      • I passed up this acer and got the x13 (didnt want to worry about oled burn in on acer, and flip/tablet mode on the asus was a nice feature that might come in handy once and a while), but i am curious about how the acer compares for light gaming. I like to think the ROG with 680m would have better hardware/software integration overall to compete with gaming capabilities of this acer with 780m, but have no idea really. Is any gaming benchmarking at a device level available?

        • Yes I totally forgot this has a tablet mode and stylus to go with it. Wife still has it in the packaging lol.

Again, can't comment on the gaming. I believe would be negligible performance difference for the type of games you can play on them anyway.

There's a bit too much bottom bezel for my comfort with the ROG flow branding which is pretty lowkey and inconspicuous but is there nevertheless.

    The 780M is no chump!

I have a Yoga 7 with the 6800U and 680M (slower older chip) and I've been able to play games like Call of Duty MWIII (2023) at 70-80fps at 600p, Metal Gear Solid V at 1600p and most esport titles run really well too. I can't believe something of this package can perform so well. The CPU performance is not only really capable for my CAD work like Revit and Solidworks, but its power efficient too. AMD really hit it out of the park and Intel have only started to catch up with their new Meteor Lake chips.

Honestly, with Apple also being highly competitive, laptops have never been this good hardware wise.

    • Apparently they haven't. Meteor Lake consistently underperformed against last gen AMD CPUs lol.

      • The issue with Meteor lake are the inconsistent drivers and the need for RAM speeds over 7000 to compete with the 780m. Unfortunately the retail laptops on shelf seem to have lower specifications than the Intel supplied review units.

    • lol warzone at 600p, seriously wtf? Warzone need to be played at 1080p and above.

I heard the Meteor Lake chips perform just under or onpar with 780m, also factoring in the cost will be much higher than AMD laptops

      • As mentioned above Intel seemed to have fudged the gaming numbers for the supplied review laptops, vs what you will see on shelf by conducting the following.

        1. Not restricting the TDP of the CPUs on the review units, compared to what an off the shelf unit will be limited to in day to day use.

        2. Providing laptops with 7500 RAM giving the IGPU with more bandwidth. Unfortunately I'm seeing Meteor Lake laptops with slower 6400 RAM, with performance worse than a Radeon 780m.

      • lol mate I just play shipment and dropzone and I was able to get a few wins by just using shotguns, it's not a full fledged laptop so what do you expect. Battery lasted over an hour surprisingly.

  • How would this be for Football manager?

Owned the laptop for a few weeks. Primarily for videos or gaming on the go.
Few minor issues but overall absolutely worth the price

    Pros
1.5 to 2 hours battery life whilst gaming which tbh is great for a laptop this size.
Great for switch/PS3 emulation and less demanding games like octopath and civ6
    Great screen
Pretty lightweight and feels quiet sturdy
I like the keyboard but that's very personal
    Plenty of IO
    Not very loud

    Cons
Trackpad require fair bit of force to click and don't feel great
Speakers are not horrible but worse than my old surface pro
Laptop can overheat to the point of shutting off if set to quiet profile.

    • Thanks for the great review!

  • Anyone done PC VR with this?

    • The 780M just touches the GTX1650 in some games. This is not powerful enough to run 99% of VR games.
