Cars You Love but Can't Bring Yourself to Buy/Drive

Another Saturday ****post. I made a thread about horsepower and speed are now cheap as chips.

So to follow up, which car you LOVE, but couldnt bring yourself to buy because of its underpowered engine / unreliabiity / unavailiable etc.

If they made a 1000hp f*ck you electric version, would you pop down the money immediately?

For me its probably a Honda Prelude, which THEY JUST MADE A NEW ONE! OMG. . Too bad all reports point to it being a hybrid.

    Goggomobil (No, not the Dart!)

  • +2

Nothing wrong with it being a hybrid, the new Corvette e-ray is a hybrid and has all the speed you'd ever need.

    • +5

No, nothing against hybrids. I just prefer my dream cars to be V12 or 1000bhp 4 motor Rimac's.

      A man can dream yeah?

      • +16

Well you're driving a Honda prelude so you're not going to get neither of that

    • Nothing wrong with it being a hybrid

Unless definitively want either an ICE or an EV … but not both ;-)

    Camry

Want to find out if they really are speed limited to 40 km/h

    • Couldnt you just rent one ?

    • My 2008 Camry sure has a bit of grunt, accelerates quicker than wifes Rav4.
I even have the dint on the back (found it there after returning from the shops, no note either), doesn't slow me down.

What I did discover is that the speedo is out by a good 10% which might explain the hate for Camry drivers. First time driving it everyone was zooming past me.

Bugatti La Voiture Noire. Just don't like those brake lights that are a row of LEDs, otherwise I would have pulled the trigger and bought it by now.

    • -3

      Yeah , sure thing !

    • Same boat.

      • It's not a land barge, by all accounts.

    • Just don't like those brake lights that are a row of LEDs,

Just don't use the brakes - problem solved 👍

  • +5

I would absolutely love a Range Rover Supercharged but cannot bring myself to buy one for many logical reasons, notwithstanding the cost.

More realistically, I refuse to buy a Prado with a tiny 4-pot diesel engine and very disappointed the Toyota 4L V6 engine is now retired.

    • You know, thats a great choice. Price not withstanding, the unreliable name of Land Rovers really do put a hamper on wanting one.

3 year old RR are almost half price from new. That seems like a lot of depreciation.

      • +2

At one time I bought 3 new RR in a row.
In all that time I only ever had two leaks:

        Water in.
        Oil out.

  • +5

Lexus LFA or a nice R34 because I'm poor

    • +2

Same, give me a R34 GTR in any spec and I'd be so happy

      • +1

I drove one around Mt Fuji a few years ago. So much fun and the power is addictive.

        • Is this something you can pay for - or did you know the owner?

          • +2

@WhyAmICommenting: Company called fun2drive, based in Hakone.

Unfortunately, I went early last year (drove the old NSX) and was no longer allowed to free roam unless you're a citizen. So had to go part of a tour and couldn't go as crazy as before when I was speeding a bit in the R34.

            • +1

@Caped Baldy: I went early last year too and as long as you were at the front half of the pack, you were able to have plenty of fun.

              • @EarlyBird22: I did too but it was a big difference. Sped up Mt Fuji overtaking the slow buses, hooned through multiple tunnels, went up and down Hakone turnpike a couple times.

A few slow Americans and a traffic accident ruined the pace though.

      • Supra MKIV

  • +1

Hybrid can increase power available for acceleration. It’s not just for reducing fuel use.

As for which car? The list is long as my arm. I guess my ultimate would be a 50s cruiser like a mercury. Long low and loud with a lot of curves - but not fins. Modern take on it would be an EV drivetrain coupled with a speaker system capable of sounding like a thumping V8.

    • +5

Really? You'd opt for the fake sound?

I understand its a subconscious thing, but if I know its fake, it takes me out of the illusion. Like fake boobs.

      • +3

Truth be told I’d probably rarely use it, but I do love the sound of a V8. It’s want to be a good quality authentic fake sound.

        • +5

The sound is one thing but the rumble you can feel in the seat and on the wheel and pretty much everywhere is something no speaker is going to mimic. Plus the shifting delivery through the gears, the faint smells, etc. - it's basically gonna take a whole VR experience to try to make that happen properly.

IMO this is going to end somewhere similar to vinyl or film - sad for the nostalgics, a pricey curiosity for the new generation, but an objectively better place overall for is intended general use.

      • Agreed, especially with fake boobs.

Its not a real prelude if it doesn't have pop up headlights.

    • Damn, I just realized you are correct.

    • +3

      and four-wheel steering!

      • and four-wheel steering!

Such a shame we don't see it much any more. Was brilliant through the twisty stuff!

        • One of the big car companies announced a concept EV at CES this year which is basically just 4-wheel steering. It is a bit different though as each wheel basically has an independent motor that articulates but it does mean you can drive diagonal, making parallel parking a breeze.

    • Its not a real prelude if it doesn't have pop up headlights.

Really? The 4th and 5th gen Preludes weren't real Preludes? Or the 1st Gen for that matter!

Having said that, I loved the pop-ups in my 4 3rd gen Preludes. Stupid pedestrian safety laws …

      • Yeah, i reckon those 4th/5th gen versions just seemed like integras or civics. Toyota Supra had pop ups too, good times.

  • +1

    Volvo.

Can never do it's Mainland Chinese.

    • I second this but for an entirely different reason. Shopped around their dealers and none of them gave a shit.

  • +2

TBH my love for cars has died when I already had my dream car as a kid. I managed to get a RX8 and that was a headache to maintain, while it was fun to drive and it was a unique car, the maintinance and fuel wasn't worth it. Not to mention the wankel engine.

Before that was a 2005 Hatch Yaris, that was a fun bubble car, had that for approx 9 years. I now got a Mazda CX3 for the last 4-5 years and it's a great car.

I have no desire to buy another car. When my CX3 dies, I will buy another sensible car.

    • +2

Should have got a proper rotary, renesis is cool, but wasnt super exciting in the rx8, and the exhaust design caused reliability issues.

      • +4

RX3 with a 13B was my dream car for years. Sounds like a sewing machine on heat.

    • +1

Whilst the RX8 is an interesting car it's also a low bar for a 'dream car'. Not exactly the best show case for rotary engines but you still get all the mess of a rotary engine.

So if your lost love for cars was because of that then you're missing out. There are better cars that are amazing, affordable and reliable like the MX-5 ND.

      • +3

My lust for cars has been fulfilled by the RX8, I reached that goal and I am satisfied, whether or not you think it's a good car or not is subjective in the sense of what the car does to someone's feelings.

Someone may dream of a lambo, bugati, rolls royce. Someone can dream for a Toyota 86. If they reach their goal and are fulfilled, that's what matters, if they strive for a bigger and better car, go for it. But I stopped at my RX8, I had fun, I don't have the thirst for another sports car. I am happy with my CX3, even if I won the lotto, I am 95% sure I wouldn't buy a sports car, not even a lambo. I'm just not into fancy cars anymore.

    • +1

ahh the joys of popping that thing's plugs and cranking it to clear a flooded engine. The gf had one, I can't tell whether the HKS spark amplifier did anything or was just nonsense, but it seemed to improve things. But the Audi TT she replaced it with was way less hassle for a similar size car. My Supra is so much less effort to have a pretty thing in the garage.

The doors were cool, they made it a much more liveable car than jumping over folded seats.

      • This is probably going to ruin your day but it was way easier to pull the fuel pump fuse and turn it over a couple times to clear.

  • +1

Older BMWs. Either E46 or E92 M3s. I have always wanted one. But they scare me. Lotus also scares me.
Alfa Romeos I also really like. Reliability doesn't scare me on Alfas. Its the depreciation. So it will be a few years before I try a 4C/Guilia/Stelvio QV.

I tend to stick with S2000s/MX5s. Or if I have a bit of money. Porsche Caymans (987.2/981). If you can get a good deal on them. They tend to not cause headaches and depreciation is minor. Then if I want something a bit spicier but more usable. I go with Renault RS models.

    • Alfa Romeos I also really like. Reliability doesn't scare me on Alfas. Its the depreciation.

Depreciation could be good, if the car was on novated.

The thing I read online about Alfa, it's the Alfa spare parts.
Apparently, they're expensive and has to come from overseas.
      Is this true ?

      • +1

Not sure about price. But yes most non standard parts would come from overseas.

But generally they sell just enough cars to have a good supply of wrecked spare parts.

I tend to like Alfa as they are a little bit behind their Euro cousins in technology. Which often makes them a bit simpler compared to their more expensive rivals like BMW or Mercedes.

    Daewoo Matiz

    • This was my first car I bought off my sister and it was a such a joy to own.

0-100km/h in 17.8 seconds, 765kg kerb weight and running a three cylinder 0.8 petrol engine comprising 37.5kW of power and 69.8Nm of torque. The thing even had front powered windows, CD player at the time and even a front cupholder.

Sadly she succumbed to snapped belts when I was driving on the freeway and wasn't worth the fix, with an oil leak leaving puddles daily at work and at home.

I’ve loved them since I was a kid because they are the quintessential Aussie muscle car with a thumping v8 - but good ones are very rare (they only ever made ~400), and cost the earth.

Or maybe - a classic VW beetle decked out in full classic Herbie livery. That would be fun, but not something I’d trust with my kids in it

    • you spelt A9X incorrectly

I drive about 800 kms a week for work, and just too many issues about their reliability.

    • +1

      You mean a Fiat

  • +2

Anything classic. As much as I want to, I want reliability and something that won’t dismantle me in an accident.

I look forward to the day batteries are cheaper and smaller so full electric conversions don’t cost an arm and a leg. I’ll have a nice weekend Alfa. But daily drive I want my airbags.

  • Too many to choose from. But my first love of classic cars was the first gen Mustang fastback. I would want to rebuild one, just lack of garage space for me to do it.

  • +5

Subaru Brumby. Love classic mini utes but not keen to drive manual in the city, and nowhere to put a child seat.

    1: Bolwell Nagari.
Had one as a drive car for a while when I was working in the motor trade in the late 70's.
No frills, just a 351 V8 and a fibreglass body.
    2: Jensen Interceptor
Again, another drive car from the 70's.
    3. Would also like a Citroen CX 2500 GTi for road trips.
Incredible handling and comfort on long drives.
4: The drive car list goes on & on..
Had a 246 Ferrari Dino (unreliable, but great fun), Porsche 911 930, Lotus Elan 2+2, BMW 2002, Triumph Dolomite Sprint, Rolls/Bentley (nothing past 80's), Peugeot 205 GTi.
Owned a few as well, but not for any length of time.

I got a dual cab ute and a ride on mower now.
    I'm happy.

Never forget 95% of Land Rovers ever built are still on the road.
The other 5% made it home OK.

    (A repeat RR buyer)

  • Literally any supercar. No matter how cashed up I may be, I just can’t see the value. Plus, I like to drive my vehicles. Can’t see any supercar making 100k, let alone a million km.

    WRX Sti

Was my grail car as a kid.
now that i can afford one i don't see the logic.
Subaru has barely innovated in the last 10-15 years, the cars haven't become any faster and if anything the interior is stuck in the 2000's. Secondhand isn't really an option given the head gaskets that tend to blow if no looked after correctly.

If they actually brought out a decent automatic (not the slushbox CVT) and gave it some proper power with maybe a 3.0L turbo engine or even an electric assisted mild hybrid for the launch then i'd look at it. EV's have all but got the sub-5 second club value for money argument sewn up.
Oh and the styling is very dated imho

In lieu of this a Range Rover Sport, but i want my car to get me from point A to B, not just there and back on a flatbed.
Had a Q7 Euro once, absolute money pit.

    • I forgot about the WRX! Yes x100.

I used to flog around the urban legend that the WRX was too powerful for street legalization that they had to lie about the hp. I just didnt realize that was only in Japan. Now that I can afford one, the new ones are butt ugly and its almost impossible to find an old one that doesnt have 50 mods "done by their friend".

1000 hp all electric WRX STi 4wd with old bug eyes. Thats a sight to behold.

      • +1

1000 hp all electric WRX STi 4wd with old bug eyes. Thats a sight to behold.

Change the bug eye to the hawk eye and that's my wet dream.

        • I had to google hawk eye. I thought they were called the pig nose.

      • I bought a bug eye WRX towards the end of '21 with a stuffed engine, and had the short-block replaced by a specialist. Overall it costed less than the more recent models, and the newer cars were a bit tame at legal speeds for me due to the better isolation i.e. not slow car fun. There's still a lot of brand new EJ207's short-blocks floating around (they stopped producing them at around 2020? FA engines from now on for Subaru)

It's now my weekend car - and it's pretty much is a brand new 2001 car with all the rubber parts in the engine bay replaced & the steering rack rebuilt. I kept it at stock EJ205 power though as I'm old & I wanna hit redline in Sydney roads without losing my license. It'll also be near impossible to blow up with an STI shortblock in it, and I can always bump the power later if I feel I want it. Turbo lag is fun!

(BTW What on earth are you going to do with 1000bhp? Get a Tesla - it'll probably be cheaper & more reliable :P)

Edit (to answer the Q): I couldn't justify a new WRX or a new GR86/BRZ, since my weekend car only gets driven 2-3K kms per year. Plonking $50-60K down on a car just for that felt insane (Lucky I didn't due to the rate rises). I got rid of my NC2 mx5 as it was impractical with children, and the older Subaru felt reasonably close in driving dynamics.

        • Past bugeye wrx owner (2001 hatch) and current NC1 owner. Weird how you seem to run into people with similar car histories.

To keep on the thread, Porsche 911 996. Wife has green lit trading up the NC but scared of IMS failure.

      • I used to flog around the urban legend that the WRX was too powerful for street legalization that they had to lie about the hp. I just didnt realize that was only in Japan.

Maybe that was true for GTR's, but WRX's aren't really that powerful in factory trim.

      • WRX has always been butt ugly tbf. I never understood the popularity of them.

        • +2

You could go from zero to wrapped around a lamp post in record time!

    • I had a Levorg GTS (WRX Wagon). I thought the CVT was more then competent. Would I like a manual or dual clutch for a better driving feel. Sure…. But I really had no complaints.

Power wise. It had more power then its equivalents. So cant complain there either.

When the jackpot lottery 1st prize was heading towards 9 figures a few years ago I decided what I'd buy if I won. A Koenigsegg Gemera. Four seats, dihedral doors, a 2 litre 3 cylinder engine with electronic valve activation not camshafts, and turbocharging producing 600 bhp, plus 1100 bhp more of electric motors. 320 km/h on just the electric motors, 400+ with the petrol engine running too. It would have been fun to say to people its ONLY a 2 litre 3 cylinder hybrid with no overhead camshafts.

But, damnit, someone else got the $90 million the jackpot got to. And even if I won't five or ten million that'd barely buy a really nice house these days, and there wouldn't be enough left to buy and insure and run a Gemera.

    • +1

You're looking at this the wrong way. Do it like the other 95% of lottery winners.

$10 million dollar lottery win, after the Gemera, there wouldnt be enough left to buy and insure a house.

    Alfa Romeo 147 GTA V6

Love love love this car but scared of reliability.

If I had money - Ferrari 355. Gorgeous but also famously unreliable and costly to maintain.

    • +1

Been telling myself I’d get an Alfa Romeo one day and almost pulled trigger on a Giulia QV. Becoming less likely as I’m growing older

      • The Giulia are pretty reliable. Go for it!

        • +1

I reckon a Veloce would be a nice daily driver that's still cheap to own and run compared to the QV.

          • +1

@eek: It is a nice car but I reckon you'd be secretly wishing you got the QV.

To be fair, the Veloce is still a lovely drive.

      • +1

OOooo, yes. Much prefer the QV over equivalent F80 M3 or C43 / C63S! Still a bit understated styling wise and no as common as the other two on the road. I have driven the C63S and it is a lot of fun! Tuned ECU with modified downpipes etc - almost a little scary even with all the modern tech and computers.

        • +1

          I have a C63s (completely stock).
If I'm honest, it's waaaaay more power than I can use.

      • Definitely should get a Giulia QV.

You can honestly say the engine is from a Ferrari.

    • Such a pity the 147 GTA V6 was so unreliable. So much fun to drive!
