Personally would not purchase an Arlo Camera again.

    • +2

      OK. Good to know.

    • Any reason? I have Arlo Pro 4 and would like your opinion before adding more cameras.

      • +16

I previously owned the Pro 2, so can't comment on the newer models.

They were fine in the beginning, but overtime they started to remove features/put them behind a subscription paywall. The Pro 2 will also be moved to End of Life in Jan 2025 (so no support, updates, bug fixes, etc).

I've since switched over to PoE cameras from Reolink; but if you're looking for wireless option then I would recommend eufy.

        • I have 6 Reolink cameras running on PoE which not had any problems (3 of them I have been running for about 2 years). I run motion on a ubuntu raspberry pi box to capture the footage.

          • +1

@ozzieblue: can you provide some info on the Rpi component? maybe a guide you followed or something?

            • +1

              @CantonasKungFuKick: Check out Frigate.

Self hosted, amazing features. Can run a couple cams on a RPi but for more you need some grunt plus ideally a Google Coral or similar device/video card. Lots of info on this site on this + how to set up and run.

            • +1

@CantonasKungFuKick: It was a long time ago and I don't have a guide.

              Briefly you
              * install ubuntu on raspberry pi,
              * then install motion (sudo apt install motion),
              * then configure the cameras in motion.conf (eg camera /etc/motion/front.conf),
              * then configure the camera in the file front.conf like this
              netcam_url rtsp://username:password@ipaddressofcamera:554//h264Preview_01_sub

Any camera supporting rtsp can be used.

        • Thank you. That sucks… Looks like I’ll have to look into other brands like eufy.

        • I think the end of life was worse than that is because it would completely cease to function, not just bug fixes. I had 5x arlo pro 2

      • Do you want more arlo pro 4 M? I got 6 still in box, gonna go solar with eufy

      • If you own your own home - Poe is the way to go. If renting its a bit hard to put holes in walls.

    • +4

Never had arlo cameras but wouldnt buy them i have eufy now but motion recording cameras are terrible overall they miss alot or dont record for long enough or dont record quick enough. Definitely going wired hikvision or something next time.

I’m running 4x Arlo Pro 4 cameras and Doorbell Camera. They are an excellent camera system for their price. The app, smart detection functionality, camera hardware etc is all significantly better than I expected.
I was very sceptical about non POE camera solutions as I run a UniFi network at home and wanted a high quality camera system. I purchased the Arlos as a stop gap in a rental that I can’t install cabling in.
I’ll almost certainly be sticking with the Arlo camera products for the foreseeable future when I build my own place as they are absolutely a good product.
The service price is incredibly reasonable. When I got them 18~ months ago it was A$15~ month for their cloud services and they’ve since put the price down to $13~ month.
That plan is for unlimited cameras up to 2k motion detection recording (which is all 90% of users would need) - I wanted 4k cameras initially and I still might add some later but these are higher quality images than I expected.
I have 1 camera on solar power and the others I charge once a month and they are set to maximum quality but I have to refine the motion detection setting to not triggers hundreds of times a day if I want it to last that long - and not get excessive push notifications.
You can add continuous video recording for $13/camera/month and the camera has to be powered by cable (not battery like normal) but I am yet to see a use case for this. The recordings triggered by movement are great.

    • Battery life sucks,, dont last a week. they ask me to install them where there is no activity,, :) defeat the purpose of having a Security camera..

      • +1

If you want them to be constantly recording then obviously battery powered ones aren't for you (unless you use the solar panel add-on).

        • You can also get the larger battery update. Useful for high traffic areas. Combine that with a solar panel and you shouldn't need to touch it for the majority of the year.. if at all.

  • +1

Very capable security camera that is dual band capable. Battery lasts about 5 months before needed recharging (not the 8 months they claim) but that's still pretty good.

Downside is the fact you have to pay for the Arlo subscription service to get the full features - including cloud storage. And that costs $5/month for a single camera or $15/month for unlimited cameras so if you buy say 3 cameras for your whole house you're up for an extra $180/year.

    • So if OP wants full functionality they’ll be paying almost the price of a camera itself in subs every year.

For some reason I find the term ‘subscription’ too bland.
I think it should be called ‘feature rental’ or similar

      • +1

Or buy the base station and an SD card

        • Can you view footage from the base station from within the app?

  • Do we need to pay for a subscription?

Edit: Yes…I'll stick to my ring cam

    • You don't have to, but its definitely recommended.

  • Am still using Arlo pro 2 bought 2019

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/465572

    No paid subscription that time

    • They changed since Arlo Pro 3 series

      • best to get Arlo Pro 2 instead of newer version?

        • I upgraded few years back due to 2K recording, siren on camera itself and spotlight on Arlo pro 3. The newer ones Arlo Pro 5 doesn’t even need a base station. But, yes you will need a subscription. Been using Arlo for few years now and they have been great.

    • +2

Note: The Pro 2 will also be moved to End of Life in Jan 2025 (so no support, updates, bug fixes, etc).

  • Id love to use with homekit - either via homebridge or directly with homekit. Are these ones better or would something like this work better?

    • I have the base station and it’s HomeKit enabled. Works great. I have an SD cars in the base station so no subscription required

      • How do you view the footage stored in the SD card from the app?

        • +1

Select the base station instead of the cloud up the top in "Library".

          • @rpb: Thanks. I have the hub that came with the Pro 2 cameras and looks like they don’t support this feature. Anyone knows if these newer smart hubs can be used with the Pro 2 cameras?

      • Can you view footage when you're not connected to the same wifi network, i.e. away from home? I also have SD card + base station but can only view footage when I'm at home. When I'm away it just sends me the notification.. which beats the point of having a security camera if it can't let you view footage when you're away..

    • I got rid of my arlo system as they weren’t compatible with HomeKit secure video. Seems stupid to pay arlo for features and storage that I was already paying apple for.

  • +2

Arlo cameras are built well, and just last, my Pro 2 cameras have been running for about 6 years, and battery life is still amazing. Yes, you have to pay a subscription for rich notifications, but in my experience they are great and significantly more accurate and reliable than the Person/Car detection on my hardwired Reolink camera. As a result I still pay my $5 for Arlo, even though I am a tightarse and hate the idea of the ongoing cost.

If I have one of my Arlo cameras die, I would stick with this brand

  • +1

No dramas here… small price to pay for the subscription. Never had an issue with them.

Only issue I had was the slow as NBN here would trip up the uploading. That has been resolved now with the fibre upgrade and has been fine since and far more responsive when accessing it as well.

PoE definitely has it's advantages but for something that is DIY and basically plug in and play it is worthwhile.

  • Does anyone know of wireless security cameras that don't require a subscription? If there is such a thing

    • Eufy. And there is probably a bunch of other ones.

    • If you only run 1x Argus battery camera, you get free 7-day cloud recording. If you run up to 5 cameras, it's around $5/month. Or you can just use the on-board SD card slot to store and playback.

    • +1

These don't require a subscription btw. You can use them without a subscription, you just miss out on some very good features.

  • i was keen to get a camera for security, but it seems most need subscription to use the capabilities, which is so annoying.
Seems like you needt o pay to get alerts which is the most important feature after recording.

Is there a camera that doenst have to subscribe and just connects to wifi and an app that you can fully control features without having to pay extra montly?

    • +1

eufy camera doesn't require a subscription.

      • thanks. ill look up on that brand.

  • I think Arlo cameras and cloud pricing are over-priced (I use an Arlo Pro, but recently went to Reolink Argus 3 Pro).

Arlo charges $5 per camera per month, or $15 or something for unlimited cameras. Reolink gives you free 7-day cloud for one camera, or if you have more than one it's around $5 per month for 5 cameras. So, much cheaper.

Reolink Argus Pro 3 seems fairly feature equivalent to Arlo, but less than half the price of Pro 5. On-board person/animal detection etc seems great. That said, I think Arlo supports IFTTT and in-app cross-camera triggering, which Reolink does not.

Arlo does have 50% off monthly pricing at checkout at the moment, but they will probably revert any sub taken at that price point after a while.

    • If you pay annually it's only $9.99 a month for unlimited cameras btw.

  • +2

I currently run both Arlo and Eufy at home and the only reason I use Arlo is because I started with it.

My Arlo system is much slower to respond and a lot of the features are for subscribers only, in comparison to the Eufy system, its much more responsive and innovative and no subscription fee, so its kind of a no brainer to ditch Arlo.

    • Do the Eufy's do all the things that the Arlo cameras + subscription do? Notifications (different ones for animals/people/cars/packages), cloud back up of recordings, "smart zone" areas to only record/notify if movement in them, etc ?

Curious to know because I've got an Arlo setup and while the $9.99 a month subscription doesn't really bother me, if the Eufy's do the same for free I'd be dumb not to consider them.

Edit: seems they do pretty much everything apart from cloud backups. While that might not seem like much, if someone was to break in to your house they could steal the base station and then all videos are lost. Still, definitely going to consider changing when some of my cameras kick the bucket.

      • +1

I only use the basic functions on both systems so cant comment on the more advanced stuffs.

On the note of cloud storage, Ive heard people in the State complained about some big brands uploading customers camera footages when requested by the police, I cant verify if its true but I guess local storage is a selling point for some people.

      • +1

One more thing I forgot to mention, experience with Eufy's app is far better than Arlo, Arlo force you to view their ad everytime I open the app

    • Except the fact eufy have terrible security.. which for those with brains is actually important.

  • This is good if you're already in the Arlo system and want to expand. If you're not, I would go something different (Eufy or, more ideally, something wired).

  • Can this work with any other software or setups etc?

  • new range of eufy products are the best, very happy with Homebase 3 AI

    Hi All,

I purchased a few of these a couple of days ago along with the hub. Videos record to local hard drive and I can access footage outside local wifi.
Camera is great, well built, good quality video and the fact that I can store videos locally instead of the cloud is a huge plus for me.

Arlo offers 1 month trial to their cloud service which is actually really good, great features, app works really well, hardly no lag when viewing videos etc.
I am not interested in a plan and I bought this strictly to use with local storage and no cloud upload. I canceled the trial to see what I will be missing as I was aware that few of the features will not be available ie AI smart detection (people, animals, etc , which I wasn't interested in anyway). Few other things were missing, zone detection ( actually still work , however power is required to be plugged in ) oddly , no power is needed when subscription is active…
Also the app has a few pop up messages "you found a premium feature" in certain areas. To get to stored videos takes a few extra clicks now also instead of being on the front page.
Few little limitations without the subscription , but enough for me to consider another brand.
Don't get me wrong, camera is great, but it just not for me without the premium features and I am not interested in paying 5 bucks a month for subscription.
I have had the camera for a few days, if anyone is interested I will be selling the hub and a camera.

    • So you cant use the cameras with any other software at all?

    • Are you able to view footages saved on the hub when you're not in the same wifi network i.e. away from home?

      • yes

  • +2

Home kit compatible but can’t access recorded footage through there only live view, talk, light on/off.

    • So cant use scrypted via docker install on NAS to record video?

  • I have no idea how that works. Probably too complex for me

    • no worries, thanks bud

Got a couple from Officeworks for $132.

  • rubbish camera and doorbell. Highly not recommend.

    • What’s wrong with the doorbell? I’ve had the regular one and the video one over the years and they’re fantastic, have never had a problem with them.

      • I have 4 pro4 camera and one wireless doorbell. All devices are connected to a base hub. One important defult of the doorbell is that it usually cannot get connected when someone ring the doorbell (Even I have moved the hub to the doorbell within 2 meters). Always get a frozen screen and a loading page. For the other camera, not quite stable as well and also portforwarding is only available for primary account.

        • That's annoying. I've got 6 cameras, 2 spotlight cameras, and the wireless video doorbell and apart from the batteries just dropping dead on a few of them outside of warranty I've had no real problems, especially with the doorbell.

        • Can you disconnect the doorbell from the hub and move to just the wifi network?

I had to move my hub to be more central to the house and along with that I moved a spare router that I converted into a mesh node.

This saved me from slow connecting due to the lack of bandwidth due to low signal strength.

Since that move I have had no issues.

    • +1

Yeps no issues with the doorbell or the cameras.
