    Hi All,

I've vowed to neg every TID post/deal that comes through, this is so people are aware of my bad experience:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/482338

Copy and paste from my previous comments:
I had a bad experience with TID.

There was an earthquake in Japan last year and I couldn't travel from Tokyo to Osaka due to damage on the train system.

This resulted in me also not being able to arrive to my Osaka hotel.

TID advised me the train company and hotel should compensate me if it was impacted by the earthquake, not them.

TID also requested I get written evidence from the train and hotel companies advising they won't cover me before they would even look into my claim.

What's the point of having travel insurance when they're not covering these scenarios.

My work colleague used their credit card travel insurance with the same scenario and no problems claiming.

I advise you to contact any travel insurance with a few scenarios and how they go about compensation eg., like my scenario.

Again, I strongly advise everyone against taking out a cover with them. It may be worth the extra money for looking elsewhere.

Thanks for the heads up! Am travelling to Japan in March and was going to put in for a quote. Good to know and I’ll be looking elsewhere.

I've done a ton of research on other travel insurance companies post that experience, Tick Travel Insurance was what I ended up with based on price and what they cover:

I'm sure you'll suss them out yourself :)

I've used CoverMore and Southern Cross Travel Insurance. Both have paid out on numerous claims without too much hassle (broken bags, small medical bills, even a cancelled air ticket due to traveller getting COVID)

Its poor form asking you to ask the Train and Hotel Company, that's the whole point of Insurance. Its like having comprehensive car insurance and your insurer asking you to ask the other party to pay you out, or get a letter from them stating they won't do this.

      Thanks for the heads-up.

    • Hi OP,

Can I suggest you make a complaint to https://www.afca.org.au

    • Funnily enough, I was in Osaka during that 2018 earthquake too and it disrupted our train down to Koyasan. Didn't think we'd make it down that day so I tried to claim it on insurance and got told sorry, you didn't have natural disaster add-on. Thankfully the train came back up again later and so we didn't need to claim anyway, but I didn't recall seeing that add on during the process. I even did a 2nd run through and never saw the option to add it either, I guess I missed some real hidden option somewhere. Though I don't quite recall which insurance this was.

Anyway I'm off for my 2nd trip to Japan in 2 weeks and your comments put me off TID thankfully.

  • Shop around… When I've looked at these guys in the past they've been on the expensive side, even with the discount codes…

Same experience as Ausdave above, I will also neg every TID deal.

Bought this for my dad back in 2011, he fell whilst overseas, and TID wanted a medical report saying that he didn't fall due to an "pre existing medical condition".

Wanted a full medical report to pay out on a $100 claim.

Never ever again will I ever use Travel Insurance Direct (TID).

Thank you for the heads up. I'm shopping for the travel insurance, now won't be considering TID.

  • Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm heading to Thailand shortly and will strike TID off my list of potential travel insurance suppliers.
Hey TID, if you read this, I think it's fair to say your mistreatment of one customer has resulted in more and continuing loss of sales than if you had just done the right thing and paid him in the first place. :P
