  • If I use thos with an existing reolink NVR it won't work with Alexa, will it?

    • +2

I think that's correct, if you plug the doorbell directly into the Reolink NVR.

However, I am pretty sure there's a work-around. If you connect the doorbell to your router/switch via PoE injection, the NVR just picks it up as IP camera that it can record, and you can keep your Alexa integration. Worth looking into.

    • It depends on the model of your NVR. Some do not support IOT.

  • Any questions about PoE version - ask me.

    • Just confirming that it can be set to record 24/7 on sd card? Approximately how long will it take before it writes over the max 256GB sd card capacity?

      Thanks

      • +1

Yes, you can set it up for 24/7 recording on SD Card. However, be mindful that it will be hard to search for specific event in that way, and the motion detection works pretty well. You can also google security camera storage calculator for checking amount of recording you can do.

  • Sorry for a noob question - I have a 20 year old wired doorbell that goes to an inside intercom from the gate outside. Would this be a suitable replacement and use the same cable?

    • Is it using an ethernet cable?

      • no its an Aiphone MK-1GD intercom, seems to have its own cable

    • +3

Neither of these models have a battery, and require both a power and a data connection.

The PoE version of the doorbell gets both power and data connection via a single Cat 5 / Cat 6 ethernet cable. You will need either a PoE-capable network switch, or a PoE injector to achieve this.

The WiFi version of the doorbell gets power from a cable (plugged into a 12v transformer somewhere) and uses WiFi for the data connection.

Depending on what your old cable is, you might be able to:

      1. Get the PoE version of the doorbell, and run a new ethernet cable to the doorbell location, using the old cable as a drawstring; or
      2. Get the WiFi version of the doorbell, use the existing cable to supply 12v power, and hopefully your WiFi signal reaches that location for a data connection.
      • my WIFI wouldn't reach that far so I might be but thanks heaps for the info!

        • +1

All smart doorbells require a data connection of some kind, even the battery powered ones.

For best reliability, try to replace your intercom wire with an ethernet cable.

      • PS: A battery powered doorbell will be released soon - Reolink Video Doorbell Battery (D340B) - as per their product book (Page 31),

      • FYI, I think WiFi version does have an ethernet connection but it's not POE. So you could send data through it but still need the power adapter for power.

    • I have installed the wifi doorbell in a similar use case. Power it with the supplied DC power supply spliced into the original cable & use wifi for the data (assuming your wifi has range to the gate). Other option is use the old cable as a pull wire to drag an Ethernet cable through but it can be hit & miss depending on how many twists & turns/how tight a fit the existing cable has. If its a long run trying to pull through can be risky as the wire could break.

      • Is it easy to replace another smart doorbell for someone without any electrical knowledge? Wifi version, not POE.

        • It depends which model you're coming from, and which model you're replacing it with.

The Reolink WiFi doorbell doesn't have a battery, so swapping from something like a Ring doorbell would still require wiring.

          • @klaw81: I have a Ki, I think it's called. It is wired already so hoping it's not hard to swap over. Do I need to turn off the power?

            • +1

@FezMonkey: I googled the Ki video doorbell, and it appears to use a DC power supply. It may well be suitable for re-use, but it would be best to verify it in case it's something weird.

You definitely should try to turn off that power supply before you remove the doorbell. It can't possibly electrocute you, but shorting it out will damage it and possibly burn the wiring.

If you genuinely have no idea about electrical stuff, it's probably best that you get some help from somebody handy - you don't really need an electrician as it's low voltage DC, but somebody with a multimeter and a few basic tools.

2560x1920 equals 5 million pixels. It's effectively a 4:3 ratio version of QHD, and the picture is very sharp.

Pretty dodgy how they are still saying it is 68% off after increasing both the special deal and the cost of what it is without the deal.

            That's 90% of AliExpress.

  • Don’t Reolink doorbells require a separate subscription from their cameras for cloud-based storage?

    • Yeah starting at around USD$3 per month.

Do you know of any brands that don’t charge for cloud storage?

    • +3

For cloud storage yes, though reolink cameras stand out for having plenty of free/local storage options including an internal SD card, a local dedicated hardware NVR, local reolink software based NVR, uploading to a self-hosted FTP server & automated email alerts.

I like the email alerts with 24h SD card recording as a backup. Whenever my doorbell/cameras detect a person I get a 1minute clip emailed to a dedicated gmail account.

      • Also (generally?) support RTSP and/or ONVIF, allowing you to connect to any NVR or other system (i.e. Home Assistant).

        • Works with both protocols and the Reolink integration in Home Assistant is excellent.

  • Great price but missed….
