Please note: skip G14 if you are using Uber or DiDi, it would not work

I tried to hail both 2 days ago trying to get either and none worked. Made me almost missed my flight as I have to dig out my older phone and install the apps again. Wasted a total of 45 mins.

    • +1

why so? did you check other apps that would not work?

      • All the other app works fine. Only DiDi and Uber didn’t

        • I find they just cancel trips anyway before getting to you. Really annoying. I spent almost 20 minutes once putting up with drivers cancelling rides. I gave up and and took a train instead.

    • +1

      it would not work…

for you. (Or do you have some link to something showing some incompatibility?)

  • +4

Waiting for the G86. The SDM695 is getting a bit old.

  • +8

Bought one of these for Christmas during the JB deal to replace an iPhone SE, and it's been a goddamn nightmare.

Apps like Discord, Skype, MS Teams, and lots of soft-phone applications that distance work use, do not work on this phone.
When you lock the phone, or minimize certain apps using the microphone, some invisible permission will turn the microphone off until the app is brought back to the foreground.

Apparently this issue is exclusive to a select group of Moto phones running Android 13, and there's no fix yet.
Have gone onto the forums several times, asking when an update for this will be rolled out, and Motorola staff just hand-wave it and say they'll send it to the tech team and to expect it in the next monthly patch… But yeah, no fix yet, and no ETA.

    • That does sound like a nightmare, was looking at possibly buying one of these down the road but I might look at something else

    • +9

do not work on this phone.

      Which phone???

      • G84 5G, but you might as well consider any of the Android 13 G-series to have it.

        • That's terrible, I hope they get it sorted

    • Terrible user experience. Hope they get it sorted soon.

    • +6

Yeah nah that has to be user error on your behalf guy. I use teams and discord on my G84 absolutely fine. And Android 14 is confirmed coming quite soon anyway.

      • +2

Listen, like most people I love the iconic Gamer Dad Reviews whataboutism: But your comment was unnecessary.

        • Maybe but I'm a G84 stan

          • +1

@Gamer Dad Reviews: So am I: Unmatched value for a screen like this and great speakers, too; And the even though the SD695 is getting a little old, it's still snappy enough for normal people.

Unfortunately I've spent hours over the phone with Moto support and they just don't have any solutions that aren't "Factory reset", which I've done twice since December, and "Wait for an update" Well, Android 14 can't come soon enough. :(

      • Also have a g84 and don't have any of these issues described, is amazing value for money

      • Second that, fantastic phone. Very happy with it. Also use dual SIM and never had a more streamlined experience with any other phone especially the messaging app.

    • It's wild how Motorola can have serious functionality-breaking issues with what seems like stock Android.

I gave up on them when the phone app stopped working. Would play ring sound but app wouldn't open, and if opened manually had no Awnser button. Factory reset, rolled back updates, even tried different SIM and network. Issue always eventually came back sporadically.

It annoyed me so much I switch to Apple for a year… on a Pixel now.

      • That's a massive issue. If a phone cannot do the #1 thing it is supposed to do i.e receive calls, then it is trash.

    • What model? 3 phones in this deal.

  • +15

    Using the G84 after years on my pixel 4a…Here are some thoughts;

    Pros
    - Camera is solid for the money (night mode decent)
    - performance good if you don't game
    - great 120hz OLED
    - 1.5-2 day battery life no worries.
    - 10% to 80% battery in about 30 minutes
    - minimal bezels and hopepunch cutout

    cons
    - 1 year of android version updates (3 years security)
    - no gorilla Glass (get a screen protector asap)
    - SD 695 is getting old, even though it's super efficient.

for $350 it's honestly a bargain. it feels way more premium and is just good at everything..

    9/10 would recommend!

    • Possibly a stupid question… But what's the glass, cos I thought every phone had a version of gorilla Glass, just newer or older. Wouldn't it be the same, but a different brand/trademark

      • they haven't disclosed.. but if they aren't using gorilla glass, it'll likely be dragon tail (the wish version if you will)

      • The G54 comes with Panda Glass which is a cheaper and less durable alternative to Glorilla Glass. So, the G84 probably uses the same thing.

    • Thx for the details. Yeah the lack of gorilla Glass explains why it's cheaper and didn't notice that….for me that's pretty important and a corner cut that's too far.

  • +7

Bought a G84 to replace my iPhone se2020. I absolutely love it! Battery life is fantastic, screen is great, does everything a phone has to do. Highly recommend!

    • Same use case and I found the opposite. Do you have issues keeping calls/microphone active with a headset when the phone is locked?

      • +1

        Not at all

      • +1

Is your phone faulty? No issue for me too,

    • I also just bought a G84. The battery is good. I think the performance sometimes lag a bit, otherwise it's a decent phone. I bought it as my second phone while waiting for iphone 16 to be released in Sept.

  • Do these use Android go?

  • +4

How is G54? looking to buy one for mum.

    • +2

Reckon these are definitely mum-worthy. My wife likes hers. Bought one for my mum!

      • Your wife's mother-in-law, or your mum's daughter-in-law?

      • +7

Now that's a keeper. A wife that' happy with a phone other than the latest iPhone?

        Freakin Amazing.

  • I just placed an order for G54 with $20 off code. A huge loss of $5.7

    • +4

you might have to hand in your ozbargain license.

  • G84 even do slo mo video? All I see is 1080p 30/60fps.

Would have been nice to see QHD screen. FHD getting old.

Any1 use a g54-g84 side by side, differences? Experience?

    • +1

Yep, does slow-mo. Took a slow-mo of my wife jumping in a low-cut top for fun!

They share a lot of functionality. Have to dig a bit to notice the differences(but I haven't compared my wife's g54 to my 84 much)

Very happy with my g84 so far.

      • +7

        Link, or it didn't happen.😊

  • Good prices, nice

  • -1

Does G84 come with dual sim?

    • It's dual micro sim or the second sim slot can be used for an SD card up to 1TB.

      • +1

        Nano-sim, no?

        • +1

          Oop my bad, I'm old.

          • @monky: So that's dual nano monky???

            • +1

              @TilacVIP: Yes correct :)

Dual Nano, or Single Nano + MicroSD

  • Comparison between the G54 and G84: https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=12543&idPhone…
Question of whether it is worth an extra $92 for OLED display, more RAM & internal storage, and a Snapdragon processor.

    • +5

Unless you need the $100 to eat the G84 is definitely worth the extra $

    • +7

I would argue that 12 gigs of RAM is overkill for the Dimensity 7020 and Snapdragon 695 class of processor.

By the time 12 gigs becomes necessary and 8 gigs becomes too little (like 4 is nowadays), the other components will be obsolete. Unlike a PC, you can't just upgrade one component. It's all or nothing.

It's like the phone equivalent of the RX 7600 XT 16GB.

Under the hood, the Dimensity 7020 and Snapdragon 695 both have 2 performance cores (both A78 based) and 6 efficiency cores (both A55 based), with the Dimensity 7020 having its efficiency cores clocked at 2GHz vs 1.7 on the SD 695. That could be better for performance, since that's a small clock difference on 6 of the 8 cores, but could also slightly reduce energy efficiency, since you don't want highly clocked cores on mobile devices.

However, in the real world, I suspect the better driver support for Snapdragon processors will allow it to edge out any similar Dimensity processor. This may change as Mediatek continue to undercut and eat into Qualcomm's marketshare.

      • Interesting analysis. I tend to agree with you. Both of these phones are capped out at Android 14 so its software-based longevity is questionable anyway.

    • You've picked the wrong model of g54 which shows as having 4gb of ram.

  • +2

Anyone that's interested to buy the G84, TheGoodguys phone sales offered me the phone for $289 without any price match request. Simply asked them for best price they could offer on the phone. Unfortunately TGG store sent me a demo phone by mistake, had to return with no stocks around. JB happily price matched the invoice price from TGG and gave me the phone for $289. Don't forget the 2.5% giftcard from Shopback.

    • Hi, could you please dm a copy of the reciept if possible. I went to JB the other day when it was advertised for $399 - I told him i wanted to buy 3 but he still wouldn't budge on the price.

      • +1

Sorry guys unable to share my invoice as that has got sensitive info on it. I suggest following the below steps if you don't mind waiting a few days for refund and can buy the device at two places. TGG will offer you the price straightaway ($289), speak to their sales team on the helpline. Suggest placing an order with TGG first to receive your personalised invoice, then cancel the order if they don't have any available stocks nearby and then walk in to a JB store, so they can price match with your TGG invoice. So better to try the above steps and I believe you will be able to get the phone. Only caveat you will get your TGG refund in a few days. I could send (sensitive info blurred) invoice but do not think that will serve the purpose for you guys. So if you can afford buying the phone at two places and wait for one refund to pop-up a few days later, then try this method out.

    • Other users didn't have the same luck
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/14881930/redir

    • Hi, I have pm my email. If you can send me the linkt or price invoice, it will be much much appreciated! I desperately need it! Thank you again!

    • $289? Damn, this might edge out the gamble i was gonna take on the Poco x6. Which seems to have better specs, but it's a 'chinese' phone…

  • Good guys cancelled my order of the 30 edge fusion… Hows the g84 stack up with it? Worth getting or hold out for another fusion deal?

    • How much was the fusion deal?

  • Interesting. I ordered a G84 last Wed. Yesterday (i.e. one week later) they called to say that they had no stock of my colour and the distributor wouldn't have until 'early Feb'.

    • JB has lot of stock. I suggest you check with them for price match and phone stock

      • -1

JB online are the biggest bunch of arrogant $h!t$.
Asked for a better than $314 and she offered $345, $4 less than their current price. Told her how pathetic their offer was and she just returned $mart arse remarks.

        • It's not hard to empathize with her - whoever the unfortunate lady was.

  • Y r they all clearing these phones ? I' almost bought the 84 as a second phone due to price and specs but so many sales pushes makes me wonder Y they are nearly giving them away ?

    • +4

tactic to gain a larger share of the market using competitive prices and specs that no other company offers at these price points

  • +1

    so cheap

I wish they made some cheap but high quality 8" tablets to take on holidays and watch movies on the plane

    • +1

Not cheap but iPad mini is perfect for that

      • thank you - yes I did come across some of these. In fact I have the alldocube mini but I feel like its still pretty rusty. Very glitchy bluetooth headphones dont pair properly which is a pain when I am on the plane. Feels like if $2-300 can get you very decent phone can they just extend the screen an extra 1.5" and hit the 8" mini tablet sweet spot?

    • +7

No, but you can buy 5 of these and still have change enough for a small second hand car for the same price as an iPhone 15 Pro Max.

      • The car will wirelessly charge my 5 phones?

  • Thanks bought the g54!

  • Was planning to get the G14 but with the Uber Didi app issue I might hold back. Kmart currently has it for $149 part of a Vodafone pack and I was thinking of using flybuys points to get it for $100.

  • -1

How is it that my Oppo Reno 5g released in 2019 has a Snapdragon 855 processor and the Motorola being sold in 2024 has a Snapdragon 695 processor? The 2019 phone flogs it!
    https://nanoreview.net/en/soc-compare/qualcomm-snapdragon-85…

    • +1

Lol! How much did you pay for the Oppo? Assume it was a flagship but that's almost 5 years ago!
Innovation is dead in phones hence why I'm keeping mine longer.

      • +1

I paid $600 for the Oppo in 2020.

    • 860 in my poco x3 pro. Think I paid under $300
      855 in my wife's mi 10t $350

    • Because SDM695 is also pretty old and low to mid level chipset.

  • Is the CPU laggy as? 2.2ghz seems slow for the rest of the specs on this phone. Even 200 dollar phones from 3-4 years ago had this speed. Or is it just fast enough or something

    • Just does not really matter anymore.

If your really into phone games or something, maybe.

    • The main focus is probably on efficiency and extending battery life more so than raw performance.

  • $289 less $25, think I am the winner from GG

    • +2

How did you get a further $25 off?

    • Goodguys doesnt have stock. How did you get it for $289?

I ordered one in mobileciti for my kid and can cancel this and buy one in goodguys if u provide us the screenshot of receipt?

      • I clicked the little chat button then requested to speak to a rep and was able to get $295 on the blue model (red was out of stock he said, dammit). that included the $5 shipping to my house (that I initially thought was to the local shop)

    • +2

Mobileciti don't sell international or grey market models. I've bought phones from them in the past which were Australian models.

      • They sell both Australian models and international models. When it's an international model, they do clearly label it as such.

    • It says Australian stock and the model number is the same as that on Harvey Norman, bing Lee and etc

  • I bought the g84,is this network unlocked? Couldn't find anything on the website

    • Yeah it isn't locked to any network.

  • Anyone know if both g84 and 54 got app muti cloning function? Thanks!

  • Moto always have performance problems.
