Why would anyone trade their consoles for a controller with a screen?? It still requires a PS5

    • +2

Yeah, seems unlikely someone will be looking to get rid of their last gen console for an accessory.

    • It’s not even the best device for streaming your ps5 either. Way better devices out there that can do it, whilst also having the ability to do other things. Without an internet connection this thing is a paper weight.

    • It’s a good way to cash in your games for credit.

I know the Sony die hards will attack me (and I say this as someone who has owned every PS + the PSP and Vita, but man this is just a joke of an idea.

Typical Sony trying to cash in on peoples stupidity with an overpriced device like this.

You can literally do what this device does already with a phone + a controller you can attach to your phone…. For ALOT less $.

    • +5

Agreed. It's a worse version of what the Wii U was doing 10 years ago.

    • -7

Less than $330? Even the phone attachments are $150, let alone adding the cost of the phone. And IMHO aren't going to be as good.

      • +1

If you own a PS5 you can pair the controller to your phone so you only need a mount for your phone which would prolly cost $15.

      • +3

Except 99% of people already have a phone that can stream the app…

And with just a quick google the Backbone phone controller is 111 on Amazon (with a sony gift card of 25.00 as well) Or as someone else mentioned you can just mount it to a Sony PS5 controller for like 15 bucks…

But hey man, good on you for wanting a device that just streams and does nothing else.

All the more power to you for wasting your money and defending the decision to do so :)

See above for a better way to write a response…

    • This would be a much better experience than even the best phone controller. It’s much more ergonomic, has PS5 Dualsense features and a decent sized display.
If you were regularly streaming to a handheld device there might be a very niche case where this is worthwhile.

      • Ignoring everything else, there's then Aussie mobile internet to contend with. So it's only usable in areas with a good stable connection (and thus useless on planes etc for travel).

Entire thing seems like a flop to me but hey, happy to be proven wrong.

        • I'm pretty sure this only works on the same wireless network that the PS5 is on.
Does the remote play still require internet connectivity?

          • @SuiCid3: Nah you can stream over the internet.

Hell I've got people telling me they got it to run on plane wifi….

Skeptical… but maybe some kind of playable connection?

            • @Ruddaga: :O

If that's the case, that definitely gives it an advantage.
I remember the old remote play on a compatible device would only work while on the same network.

              • +2

@SuiCid3: You've been able to use the PS Remote Play app to play PS4 and PS5 games for years. I streamed Persona 5 to my phone from my PS4 on my lunch breaks at work, and was even able to finish God of War at my parents house in NZ when my PS5 was at home in Brisbane.

      • +2

        This is what I'm thinking.

Also I don't have a phone with an 8" screen.

Also I have young kids so sneaking in gaming is a priority. Which is why I use a Nintendo Switch.. resuming is so quick that it's actually possible to sneak in gaming. It would be great if I could sneak in PlayStation with proper dual sense features

There are good mobile options out there. Something like the GameSir G8 is very ergonomic and isn’t at all cramped. That one will have similar sized grips (it’s very close to an Xbox design) and is easily modded to take something as large as an iPad mini (https://www.reddit.com/r/ipadmini/comments/18ljjyk/ipad_mini…). At Xmas it was about $100 too, so not that expensive either and while it means using your phones battery, it has pass through charging.

        Missing the Dual Sense however.

On the flip side a mobile solution will support Bluetooth headphones unlike Sonys product, which I consider a pretty big issue with what Sony put out given so many people have Bluetooth headphones nowadays.

You have to use a PS controller when streaming on the phone (via PS Remote Play) anyway unless you're using a third party app

Considering getting this for my 10 inch tablet.

      What a beast!

I've used basically every phone clip adapter thing out there and i hate every single one of them

they all feel like a compromise and like the shitty 3rd party controllers from the ps1 days

i also just flat out hate using my phone. My phone is my phone, it's not a gaming device. I don't want to get messages in the middle of a game.

I wish the vita was PS5 compatible, that would've been best

      the portal is good though

    Should be $150 max

    • Nah, should be $200 cos backbone RRP $179, this come with a screen.

      • Backbone regularly sub $120. That's a massive rip off like the portal at $330.

I tried remotenplay with my Pixel and despite 100/20 internet and decent router the performance wasn't smooth. Might work for slow rpgs but anything else it's just not good.

They should have put the same tech as the Wii U.

        • The Wii U worked well within its limitations, but its limitation was essentially 10 or 15m direct line of sight to the console or it’d fall over.

Sony using your access point has its own compromises, but potentially has more flexibility where you can use it in a house.

Yeah trade your console for a remote play device, nice idea 10/10 logic

    • +1

      Did you READ the title?

  • I'm happy to get one and will be.

Appreciate all the hate for it, but for my gaming regime then i can definitely see use for it.

Yes i can use a phone with controller or similiar, but no controller can match the features of the dual sense which is part of its appeal.

    • Have you tried remote play on your phone first? For me it felt stuttery playing Astro Playhouse so I can't see it working too well unless you play slow games.

      • My network and home setup works great - tried on steam deck and rog ally. However, had to use third party app to get good play where the sony app is not great

When they run extra trade bonus they often drop the trade value of games for a while…pro tip
