All this inb4 is making me arse hurt

I hope no one is actually buying it at this price.
Kogan had it at 1199 for preorder right before release then they upped it to 1299 when they saw the demand for it. This is the normal Aussie imported price.

    • Supply and demand situation right there is sounds like.

    • +1

Yeah these shouldn't be up voted at all. Even for $1199 it's basically rrp. I would find it hard to call any of these a deal until they're under $1000.

Save money for incoming new toys from Dr. Lisa Su. It is said AMD would very soon publish newer iteration 8480U, which would definitely outperform current prevailing 7840U and Z1E, not to mention SD's customized CPU would fall back even further.

    • +5

Yes, yes Lisa will save gamurs

    • +1

The only change for the 8840U is an upgraded NPU, which is irrelevant for gaming. Otherwise it's exactly the same as the 7840U.

    • Life is too short, and technologies will change every six months. Buy now, regret later.

There is no difference between those APUs aside from the addition of an Ai engine. Next to no point waiting.

with the recent rog ally 2 news i feel like holding will be the best…i do wish steamdeck oled was officially being sold in australia..price is ridiculous

    • +2

Yeah the steam deck has some pretty decent demand in Australia. I don't know what's stopping valve from officially selling here.

      • Valve boycott Australia for all intents and purposes due to a pretty petty lawsuit the ACCC waged on them years ago. Valve lost the court case and had to pay a huge fine and now surprise surprise our country is always de-prioritised under every other country/region nowadays.

        • +6

We also banned L4D2 because it was deemed too gory for an MA15+ rating and our rating system at the time didn't have an R18+ rating.

        • +5

Yeah, Aussie consumer law is just too good that Valve is too scared to sell shit over here. oh well. Currently rog ally being sold for like $1000 with the ebay discounts and many seccond hands being sold for $800ish. If the typical revisions/refresh is coming to the Rog ally 2 (better performance, better battery, oled screen) then I think that is a better buy if youre in no rush. Can also load Chimera/SteamOS on the rog ally now. Handhelds is in such a weird spot right now, i feel like every handheld all different pros/cons which makes which makes it a hard buying decision. I feel like the Rog ally 2 has a chance to whip the floor if done correctly..at the price of imported steamdeck oled…

Doesn't sound petty to me… Valve on the other hand sound extremely petty if that's the reason why they aren't bringing the SD to Australia.

Your comment reveals you’re either ignorant or anti-consumer pro greed capitalism. ACCC took Valve to court over misleading refund policies and failure to uphold minimal refund standards. And this is in Australia where consumer ‘change of mind’ refund is already rare & generally NOT covered compared to most countries including U.S, CAN, China, SK, JP etc.

So good on ACCC for actually deterring bad corporate behaviour. As for why Valve refuse to officially release steam deck here, it’s not because they refuse to operate here. They’d taken their steam store down with the ACCC decision and just required Aussies to VPN & buy through another region.

SD not officially releasing by Valve through their website is likely because eess requirements & Valve either didn’t have the technical /adminstritive/buisness capacity to apply at initial launch (https://www.eess.gov.au/safety-requirements/certification-ge…) or other considerations like logistical chain & the good old supply vs. demand at more populated countries.

Either way Valve is making their money through the grey imports anyway + voiding their normal responsibilities as OEM to provide warranty. So your warranty if you tried to RMA your deck would be through point of sale like Kogan (god knows they’ll either try reject you first or eventually just replace it). Try RMA directly from Valve on Australian purchased SDs. See what Valve says

        • Not sure that it's for any grudge/vindictive reasons.

One point I've thought about - Gabe Newell loves New Zealand and was trying to (not certain if he did) get citizenship there, but NZ is in the same boat as Australia in terms of lack of official Steamdeck availability.

      • Jbhifi in New Zealand stocks steam deck so there might be a glimmer of hope.

        • +2

Must still be grey stock though? Not sure it's much different to Kogan/Dick Smith selling it here.

Edit: Looks like JB Hifi NZ got them through a third party, not through official Valve channels. They're directing any warranty claims back to the third party, so doesn't seem like an improved outcome compared to buying grey over here (though happy to be told otherwise).

I'm not in a big rush so I'm sort of waiting for the steam deck 2 which hopefully will have a OLED model.

    • +2

Can’t even imagine what rev 2 would be like. It’s so good as is, especially in winter 😝

  • Swear this was available for $100 less for about a month until now?

    • +3

Probs thinking of the LCD version. This version is a model update.

  • +1

would love a powerful SMALL handheld that can be used probably for travel. these things are way to big and heavy
