You angered the communists with this wrongthink. - 5 Social credit for you.

  • +7

these are not direct though. Is anyone actually going 15+ hours to japan when there are direct 9h flights?

    • +31

Yeah when it's 1/3 the price of flying direct…

      • +7

I got 1k return going late Feb multi City.

        Syd-Haneda and Seoul back home.

        • Damn. Which airline? mine is 1.6k via Qantas with asiana between Gimpo and Haneda

          • +1

            @bozaar: Qantas.

I did pay $200 to fly from Osaka to Seoul with JejuAir

            • @sauce2k: Thanks, guess my ticket @1.6k isnt too bad then. Buying it direct from qantas for some reason was 2.5k.

              • @bozaar: I bought it direct from Qantas minus the leg from Osaka to Seoul..it was so cheap I just bought it ahahha then afterwards I was like oh sht I’m gone for 3 weeks 😂😂😂with zero leaves

      • +2

You missed this deal then. Sydney to Haneda direct on ANA with a flight to Sapporo the following day for $1080.

      • +2

not true. plenty of direct flights for this price/close to.
Even direct flights cheaper than this price on jetstar!

    • I'd also be curious if you get the full finger print and customs treatment landing in HK these days.

      • I thought you only need to go through with fingerprints if you are a permanent resident. To go through the electronic (unmanned) channel with a Hong Kong ID card because they have that on file with your ID as a resident. And probably wont have to go through customs if you are just transiting through?

      • +2

Japan/US/South Korea/Taiwan does fingerprints for all visitors. Annoying but is what it is.

      • Nah Hong Kong doesn't do that for visitors

But locals using HKID card do electronic thumb print and don't need talk to anyone

      • Went to Hong Kong, Thailand and Singapore recently, Hong Kong was the only one that didn't do fingerprints.

    • Maybe if they're chasing 1W or QF points and Status Credits…

    • +1

I'll take it if Tokyo is my final destination. Direct flights never go this low.
It'd hardly be worth it if you are visiting another city (especially regional) in Japan though, as the return airfare from Tokyo to another city is easily $200 return (and you'll have to do your own transfer), not to mention that most of them fly from HND which is a long trek from NRT…
The trains aren't cheaper. And there is no bullet train departing from NRT.
In those cases, a $~1000 return via ANA may present a better value, as you get the connecting domestic flight for free.

      • +2

Isn't it thr opposite and generally better to fly through Cathay to other destinations as Cathay flies to a lot of other airports besides Tokyo as well. Osaka, Fukuoka, Nagoya, Sapporo etc

        • Yes those could be useful as long as the final destination aligns with your trip plan. But they are not on sale right now (although there are some interesting deals connecting with MU, CA etc).
You'd still get a lot more options with local airlines. Think HKD, KOJ, OIT, MMB - all interesting places but expensive to get to if you don't land there on a plane.

    • +4

If you have OneWorld status a layover in Hong Kong is quite comfortable due to the quality of Cathay lounges.

      • +3

i would rather get my ass to Japan on a cheap airline and start my holiday than waste time in a lounge

        • I have flown there several times direct on Jetstar in the past. Those prices via. HKG seemed quite competitive however.

  • +4

can you stay in hk for a few days ?

    • Came to ask the same. If yes, this makes it worthwhile!

    • +4

      Yes, do a multi-city flight
May need to do a few combos to get a good price
I just did random dates end of April
      SYD > HKG,
      HKG > HND,
      HND > HKG,
      HKG > SYD

      for $1k

      • is that through the CX website?

        • Ah yes through the CX website

      • +2

Extra couple of hundred to stay over & pump $$$ into the local economy, and no extra travel legs. CX ought to copy SQ and their "Singapore Stopover" idea.

        • Agree, would be nice, but I have family there so a short few days before and after JP is nice for only a little bit more

  • +1

CX is a good option for anyone who has QF gold status or above as the CX lounges in HKG are some of the best.

    • +1

As is the reopened Qantas Lounge. Head to CX for some amazing noodles then finish off @ the Qantas Lounge for some fantastic cocktails and a shower, ready to head off on the next leg.

      • The bar the all of the CX lounges is very good, firstly the provide a printed menu, so no guessing game on what they make.

I just love their drinks menu as there are like 50+ options, from Cathay delight to espresso drinks, champagne and 10+ cocktails and mocktails (ie Blue Hawaiian, Shirley Temple, etc). I hate other lounges that don't have menus as you inevitably ask for a drink they don't make and it becomes a guessing game on what they make.

Edit: It's just good there is now more of a price war on international tickets as paying over $1000 compare to around $700ish pre covid for trips to Japan hasn't been good.

  • +1

Whats the cheapest way to get to HK nowadays?

Pre covid i was getting $500 return from adelaide.

Now neither virgin nor cathay do adelaide.

    • I would love for Adelaide to get a bit of extra flights, but doubt Cathay would restart ADL -> HK flights any time soon.
My last flight in Nov with Qantas (ADL-SYD-HKG-MEL-ADL) was about $765. Price-wise OK, but very limited options outside of Qantas (not a fan)

      • oh thats not too bad. How did you find that? do you just search adel - hk or do you have to do your own flight to sydney etc?

        • It was just a general Google search, with all flights in one booking. The price grid on Google is pretty handy for quickly seeing which days are cheaper. Booked through Flybuys Travel at end of July, flew early Nov and back late Nov last year.
(FYI Flybuys Travel aren't any cheaper, I just had a lot of Flybuys points to use - better use of points than redeeming Coles discounts and losing out on using 2+% off Coles gift cards!)

  • If you're chasing QF Status Credit then fly CX or Gold status up for free lounge at HKG.

If you don't then fly CZ, roughly ~$150 cheaper (free hotel if long layover >8 hours) and 2 pieces of 23kgs, CX only allows 1 piece of 23kgs.

They are both good full services airlines.

    • Do you actually get status credit by booking Cathay flights via AuntBetty etc.?

      • Doesn't matter who books it or where, as long as you fly then you get SC.

  • +3

Wow, crazy prices. Cathays economy product is still one of the best imo. Wish these fares were from Perth

    • +1

Yeah I flew with them in October to HKG and they have 2 full meal services during the flight which were tasty. Qantas last time on their direct flights only gave me a main and then a snack service.

I'm not a big fan of Qantas's large serve meals as they miss out on extras like side salads which other airlines give. I just find sometimes you get a main you don't like, but if you at least have a different side dish, you will at least be partially feed compare to Qantas where you don't get the variety on the meal service.

    • Cathay econ also comes with ice cream for long haul flight dinner :)

      • Just checked what I got HKG to Australia and it was Haagan Dazs mango and raspberry. Very nice

      • Qantas handed out Weiss bars last week. I think Cathay hand out Haagen Daaz?

        • Also for midnight snack (if you're awake) the last time I flew SYD-HKG with Qantas.

        • Ben & Jerry’s in economy class Sydney to Hong Kong.

  • 8-9 hours or less = budget economy - under $450 return (priority pass for lounge access so no meals required)

9 hours = business (using points of course)

  • Does anyone know if I can just fly to Hk and skip the Tokyo flight all together? Played around with the search engine and searching BNE - HKG is more expensive ~$1k

    • It's not allowed, your return flight would likely be cancelled if you skipped the Tokyo leg on outbound flight.

    • Go to Tokyo, its fun. Sorry I dont know the answer

    • No, you'll lose your return flight.

      • Thanks for the advise. I won’t be doing that.

I’d love to go to Tokyo but I don’t have time. I just went there last week on Vietjet for $480 with no check in luggage. Had a 10hrs layover in Saigon!

It’s a shame cause Cathay is the only one that does direct from brissy. I’ve been burned by Qantas too many times my last two recent trips.

  • +2

    I flew this route before.
The main issue in my case is I ended up in HongKong airport for hours when I should be sleeping. I paid for a tiny room in HongKong and that was not very helpful.
Then it landed in Tokyo hours before hotel checkin time.
That morning I felt half dead wandering the streets and a museum.
For someone who can sleep well in plane and airport bench, not a problem.
Later I was told just go to an internet cafe that offers tiny mattress to have a sleep. That’s common in Tokyo. But I think this route is not for me.

    • Cathay has loads of flights everyday to tokyo. I'm surprised you didn't just have a quick connection and end up at tokyo.

Whilst I don't recommend it, they even have a 01:30 service.

      • When you buy tickets like the ones in this post, options of the second leg are limited

    • I just did a random search Mel to Tokyo (May 30 to 13 Jun)
looks like both ways only have a 2 hours transit time in Hong Kong

  • +1

Watch out for cancellations from Cathay. Their service has gone to shits lately

Cathay does not compensate for flight cancellations or free hotel when it happens

    • +3

I flew Cathay to HK, Malaysia in Aug/Sep last year. Due to a typhoon or something, my MEL to HKG flight was cancelled. Within an hour, they rebooked me on a partner airline to Malaysia and the rest of my booking continued as usual.

On my trip, I needed to call customer service to add more baggage to my booking. They picked up within a minute of calling. It took them about 15 mins on the phone to resolve my issue.

I was pretty impressed by their efficiency.

    • My main gripe is their refurbishment of their Boeing 777 planes. What used to be a 3-3-3 configuration has been reconfigured to a 3-4-3. You can really feel the difference in shoulder room.

I guess thats also why those that kept that config never stayed profitable - ala VA, TG, MH,

      • Yeah was on B77W and definitely noticed the lack of shoulder room. Luckily it was a day flight as I'd imagine a night flight would be terrible.

Went back on A359 which was much better. If people have the option, best to go for either the A330s or the A350s

  • +1

Osaka Kansai is also sold at similar price.

  • +1

    PERTH?!!!?!!?!!?!?!?!!

  • Sorry is this website legit to book?

    • Use this to find the cheap dates then book direct with airline, usually around 10% more but its the safe option

  • Im not sure if these deals are great value with a stop over. It can be painfull especially if one of the two flights is delayed. Can you at least make the stop over a few days to see Hong Kong while you are there anyway.

  • +1

    No love for Perth.

  • Any options from perth at similar prices you guys can find?

  • dammm… just been robbed by jetstar for $650 without any meals. sighhhh

    such is bargainers life…. lol

  • How does China Southern compare to Cathay Pacific? I'm finding better times on the former for also much less money, but am sure there's a catch?

    • Much worse legroom, food, IFE and cabin service (/English) on China Southern in my experience.

      • Pros are CZ provide complimentary accommodation for layovers over 6 hours, and two 23kg checked luggage instead of one with Cathay.

Note that Cathay is a OneWorld member, allowing you to accumulate/redeem benefits with Qantas FF. CZ has ended its partnership with Qantas so no FF benefits to be had.

        • Thanks for the info.

          1. Any idea what the seat pitch on each airline is as this is of primary interest to me?
          2. One of the CZ flights has a layover of just 1.5 hrs in GuangZhou. Is this an issue?

I'm just a bronze Qantas flyer.

          • @ddhar: Not sure on the pitch, you can find out through seatguru. However as others have mentioned in Cathay 777 economy seats are 3-4-3, which can be quite cramped.

Transfer should be fine, conditional on no delays. I've flown CZ Melbourne to Seoul with a 2-hour transfer, went by smoothly. If you miss your transfer, CZ staff in Guangzhou should be able to help seeing as its their primary hub.

The language barrier could be an issue on the ground and in flight, I'd assume Cathay staff more likely be english proficient.

          • @ddhar: As hocus said you can check seat pitch online. I personally didn't find seat width to be an issue on China Southern or Cathay, felt about the same. I was impressed by legroom on Cathay though. Especially between HKG and TYO. I generally suffer when it comes to legroom on Asian airlines (especially mainland Chinese airlines) and am pleasantly surprised every time with Cathay. Can actually stretch out, at least on their 777's.

I generally don't like 90min transfers for international flights, this goes for any airport. Can be a bit too tight if anything goes wrong or you have a delayed arrival. I've found staff to be professional in CAN airport but yeah English can be hit-or-miss depending who you get.

I prefer HKG airport, it's one of my favourites in Asia actually, but ultimately it's not really a deciding factor on who I fly.

  • Any idea if you just want to go HK would they be ok of ya don't show up in the second leg of the trip to Japan?

Directly flight to HK is like $1500 at times

    • This is called skiplagging. Usually it means all remaining flights are forfeited, and it's technically in breach of the fare rules unfortunately

      • And if you do it a lot you can find yourself getting flagged by airlines.

Other thing - though I've never heard of it happening - is that Customs and Immigration do have access to your flight itinerary and might have questions as to why you are not boarding your onward leg. CCP Customs officials are generally not a group I've ever liked giving reasons to ask me questions I might not have a very good answer for.

      • Ya but why is it they sell it so cheap when you need to transfer even if you only want to a direct trip to the first destination

As direct flight to first leg cost more

Is it something to do with them wanting you to spend money in Japan

        • Supply and demand, as well as maintaining services on specific flight legs. Airlines have been doing this for decades. It's almost always cheaper flying multi legs. You're essentially paying a premium for a direct flight.

  • Any deals from Adelaide OP??

  • Wonder what biz price is? I flew cathay from hk to tok on pts in dec and it’s one of the best. Really worth it

  • So many deals for flights to Japan from the east coast right now but nothing decent for Perth 😔
