      • Hmm, did that happen with Vista?

      No reason to get it

      Windows 8 is a failure..

Windows 8 UI on a PC is horrible. I have upgraded and regret it. I can understand their strategy of trying to build a common UI across devices to combat Google etc, for mine, all they have done is alienate theri core desktop users by introducing a quasi 'finger swipe with a mouse' type system. I have installed one of the many 3rd party patches that reinstalls a win 7 type UI on top of Win 8. Occasionally it flips back to that crazy main screen.

My PC is a tool and I have no interest in re-learning how to use it in order to suit Microsoft's higher goal to enter the tablet PC market and compete with Google. I have the free Media centre edition upgrade, no idea where it is or how to use it though, probably one of the apps on that odd Win 8 screen that I avoid!

      • +3

just click desktop and you back again to windows 7, dont worry about the metro UI, to search anythint just use your keyboard windowskey + w, everything is the same except WIndows 8 run more faster and smoothly compare to win 7 and yes, the stupid thing is shutdown hahaha

      • Download a free tool called "Pokki". It adds a start button and you can choose to disable all the Win8 crap like swiping corners and Metro etc.

The trick to get it for 14.99$ doesn't seem to work anymore as it asks for a windows 7 key now.

    • just ordered mine with promo code(also got email confirmation), it did not asked any key…

i just stopped the installation after getting the key… so not sure if it asks after that step…

    • works for me, i just tried it then and got my key and installing now :D

  • At what stage did it ask you for the product key, after you paid or after you downloaded ?
I just paid and will resume download at home and hopefully it will not ask me for my key.

    • Before paying. When you fill out the form to get the $15 upgrade offer, the next step is validation and it asks for a win 7 key.

      • I just did it a few minutes ago and got through. Details I used were;

Date of purchase: Friday, 13 July 2012
        Name of retailer: Harvey Norman
        PC Brand: Acer
        PC Model: Timeline Ultrabook M3

        • ohh, it worked. It looks like they will block you after an unsuccessful attempt. I used your details on my home PC, didn't work.

Then tried it using my notebook and it let me in. Odd.

  • Hi guys I know people have been saying you can save to ISO or stick so you can download on a different computer and install at home. But the email and installer say you should 'You must order your upgrade using the PC that you wish to upgrade. ' Just wondering if any1 can confirm they can dl from work computer and install later at home?

    • +1

I burnt the ISO and did a clean installation (after formatting Win 7 partition) using only the Win8 product key. Since formatting gets rid of all traces of the previous operating system, I don’t think where you download the ISO matters. The only way it could matter is if the downloader somehow dynamically insert details of the CPU or motherboard into the installer, which are then checked at the install time. I highly doubt they would go to that much trouble when they don't even verify the PC's model number for eligibility in the first place.

  • +1

    got a copy for $15…

    • What laptop model number did you put in?

      • -1

i put in a make up name, model name is : Bitfenix

  • +1

IMO, i rather purchased with the box from officeworks for $48.72

    • How long will OW have it for this price?

    • +1

add another $7 of stuff (A4 ream, anything..) and get Free delivery! (no more handling fees, apparantly)

  • If I buy a new laptop.. can I use my old laptops key, or would I need to get another one?

    • If I buy a new laptop..

      ??? Does not compute.

If you buy a new laptop today, chances are you will get Windows 8 preinstalled already…

If not, you supply the key that is printed on the COA sticker and use it to get your $14.99 Windows 8 code to upgrade.

  • +1

I can confirm the $15 upgrade offer worked. I used Harvey Norman as the retailer, Asus as the manufacturer and CG8565 as the model number.

    • you can put any manufacturer and model number ( as i did with my OEM win7 )

      • We are sorry.

Unfortunately, based on the information you provided during the registration process you are not eligible for the upgrade offer.

        :(

        Didn't work for me..

Tried 3 OEM Win 7 keys and none of them were eligible.

        • sorry to heard that, it did work for me.

  • +1

Upgraded to Win8 and did not regret it. Performance is noticeably better on my laptop.

Wasn't really bothered with Metro anyway.

    • Download "Pokki" to add a start button and skip metro. Pretty neat interface.

  • Forgot about this thanks

  • Probably missing something blatantly obvious but how can I download the actual Windows 8 ISO file/USB installation apart from the Upgrade assistant?

Also when we buy this, are we pretty much just paying for the CD-Key? The installation doesn't have it embeded inside or anything does it?

Last thing; how many installations per key (reinstalls etc)?

    Thanks :-)

    • +1

After you download W8 from the Upgrade assistant, it asks if you want to install or make an ISO

  • +5

I wouldn't upgrade to Windows 8 if they paid me #Windows7FTW

  • +1

Thanks guys.. I had a pirate copy of Windows 7 64bit installed on my system and tried Jesseboy89's method to get it for $14.99 and it all went smoothly..

Currently downloading and installing.. Ill let you guys know how it goes!!

    • +8

Still not back…. I expect the police are picking him up as we speak.

  • Just picked up the last copy of Windows 8 Pro which was on the shelf at Officeworks for $48.72. Come tomorrow it will be $200. I think compared to that price i got a bargain.

    • Id rather pay 0 and keep win7.

      • There was atleast 100 empty boxes at ow keswick (SA), not sure if that means they have 100 in that filing cabinet behind the counter though.

        • Maybe Junkee is responsible :P

  • Officeworks have it for only $48…

    • Save -$8!

  • I was considering buying this, just to get Media Center for free, but I haven't got up to date backups, so I'll just have to buy the $15 upgrade when I get a Windows 8 PC.

  • Is any one else having trouble downloading??

I have tried the download manager about 5 times now and every time it says:

    Download did not complete successfully
The download task did not complete
    Unspecified error

Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks

  • Need Help while processing payment through paypal my PC just stuck now I don't have any details other than Paypal Transaction Ids.Any clue will be really helpful. Is Promo code same for Win8 KEY (which I don't think so)Just sent a Email

    • Same issue for me. Right after clicking on Pay Now in Paypal the screen froze. Logged back into Paypal and the status shows as Pending. Anyone else here experiencing the same?

  • Hmm did the $15 thing once and all went smoothly. tried to do it again and at the registration stage it says "Unfortunately, based on the information you provided during the registration process you are not eligible for the upgrade offer."

I tried this twice making sure the information matches eligibility criteria but no go.

Anyone else tried this more than once?

    • Try clearing cache and cookies. Or perhaps use a completely different computer or device to fill out the form.

      • Thanks. Tried in Incognito but no go. Will try on a different machine when I get home.

    • I had same problem last night. Tried a few things, none of which worked. Bought it full price in the end for my 2nd PC.

    • Same here… no luck getting the code.

Got the error as above the first time and now it keeps asking for a Win 7 product key.

  • oh man the only full version item i have is windows xp :S i updated this to windows 7. Can i update the update to windows 8? if that makes sense.

  • +1

Thanks for the reminder. Just bought this for 14.99 using OP's method. :P very happy.

I haven't downloaded it yet because its over 2GB

I know there's a free Windows Media Centre Pack which also expires today www.ozbargain.com.au/node/82944. I also registered and ask for a key, but it says within 72 hours will email me….

My question is can I still use the key for the Media Centre to activate after 31st Jan? I don't have Windows 8 installed yet so I can't try

    • I get an error each time I put my email and the random numbers in.

Cant get the free media center edition, keep getting an error:

      We couldn't process your order.
If you think you have received this message in error, contact a Microsoft Customer Support representative.
      Terms & Conditions

Could someone PM me a promotional code for Windows 8 Media Center? That would be awesome!!

    • Thanks for reminding me about the media centre!

  • Just burned the download to ISO and will install this weekend on an SSD which I haven't bought yet but hoping an ozbargain post for good and cheap SSD pops up soon :)

  • Got one copy at $14.95 - then it keeps coming up 'Sorry, you don't qualify'. So I bought another for the $39.
Download is EXTREMELY slow - estimated 8hrs+. I suspect their servers are being hammered.

    • Downloaded it last night in 15mins…

  • +2

This is a false alarm because today is NOT the last day to upgrade. The last day is 28 February 2013. However today is the last day to BUY a Windows PC which is ELIGIBLE for the discounted upgrade offer. And also the last day to add the free media centre to Windows 8. So if you don't want the Media Centre, you have until 28 Feb.
This quote from the "Program Information" on Microsoft's website refers: "You must purchase a qualifying Windows 7 PC between 2 June 2012 and 31 January 2013 to be eligible for this offer. The last day to register and order your Windows 8 upgrade is 28 February 2013."

  • Some instructions to reinstall a fresh windows 8 install

Check the last part when the guy does the registry trick. Might wanna give it a try this weekend.

  • +1

Making a purchase up per the OP voids the terms…you may as well just pirate a copy and save $15.

    • Why !!. let me guess you bought the $39 and not happy others got it for $15 :)

      • Apparently I could get it for $15 if I lied about a purchase.

"The offer is for customers (e.g. home users, students, and enthusiasts) who purchase a qualified PC. A qualified PC is a new PC purchased during the promotional period…"

I get it for 'free' anyway through TechNet.

        • I'm sure Microsoft are aware of this 'loophole' and figure it's the better of two evils.

They get $15 out of people who are otherwise going to pirate their OS and probably figure $15 is cheap enough to win a lot of them over. For $15 you no longer have to worry about activation dramas and constantly staying one step ahead of Microsoft. Those same people would probably not pay $40 and definitely won't pay $199 so it's pretty smart business to allow the loophole to exist I think.

Honesty, I hate to say, cost people an extra $25 dollars needlessly. It's a null point now because presumably this deal has now expired.

        • They get $15 out of people who are otherwise going to pirate their OS

They also get $15 out of people who are running Windows 7 and don't see a good reason to upgrade a perfectly good OS.

I just upgraded my HTPC from W7 to W8, which is of course, unncessary but when an OS upgrade only costs $14.99 it's damn hard to resist :)

        • True that! :)

        • So would you recommend it? I was thinking of upgrading my HTPC…

        • Probably apply the same logic scrimshaw did. Basically you don't need it but for $15 why not. Unless you had other PC plans for your Win8 then you might as well. At least it turns on quicker than Win7.

  • Does anyone have a direct link to download the iso. I didnt get an option to download as it just downloaded the 2gb and updated windows 7 straight away.

I have the C:/ESD folder so can I just take a copy of that onto an external drive as a backup to install Windows 8 as a fresh install?

      • hmm no that file downloaded a 5mb exe.

Im after something i can put on an external USB or burn an iso to DVD in case i need to reinstall win8 fresh.

    • When I downloaded mine, once it finished and did it's checks it gave me 3 options:

      1. Install now
      2. Install by creating media
      3. Copy to desktop (or something similar)

By selecting option 2 you get some ISO choices such as burning to DVD, USB and creating ISO on the local drive. Then walah, you have your Windows 8 Pro Upgrade ISO.

Hope this helps? Maybe just go through the download process again…

    • Yes you can.

  • Can anyone confirm that the work around is still working? I can't seem to get it to work, after the first page it then asks me to enter the product key of the windows 7, and after other tries it just says you don't qualify. Has the offer finished now it's past midnight?

    Thanks

  • Just a heads up guys:

The current version of Nvidia forceware 310.90 will fail installation if it is installed prior to rebooting the system after Windows update.

Make sure you reboot the system first after Windows Update, BEFORE installing the 310.90 driver.

    https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/527599/windows-8-is…

I just ran into this issue and had to undo things the hard way… a system frickin restore that undid about 1 hour of app installation.

    • +1

Sounds like every second Catalyst install I've ever done :-(

    • It's always a good idea to reboot after a windows update.

  • I just noticed that the Microsoft Store Australia still has Windows 8 Pro listed at $39.99 and it's still the same price at the retailers too. I thought the prices were going to be jacked up today or is that only in the US.

    • There seems to be a mistake. The actual date for which the price is going to be jacked up is somewhere in Feb 28(?)

However the date for which you can buy a qualifying Win 7 laptop and upgrade it for 15 is over.

      • Whoa there's no mistake. What was $39.99 for Windows 8 Pro upgrade is now $399.99 and i can't believe Microsoft that's a 10 fold increase in price which is massive. Honestly who's going to buy it for $400 download version.

        http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msaus/en_AU/pdp/productI…

        • WOHA. That will make sure no one will ever buy it from now on!

        • Yeah it's stupid. Microsoft was claiming that sales were dropping so what do they do jack it up to a price that no one will buy so sales will drop even more.

On another note you can still buy the Windows 8 Pro upgrade retail from Officeworks for $48.72 so get it while you can because compared to that $400 that's a bargain!!!

          http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Sof…

        • I just bought a 3rd key for $14.99 (discount of $25). Wasn't connected to Australia site by the looks of it :)

        • Hey how did you manage this? Couldn't get more than a single key…

        • used inprivate mode on IE and used a different first name, e-mail and phone number.

seems to be pretty random cos I had used the same details in firefox + IE and it was asking for win7 key.

        • +1

I actually used my real name details twice and got it twice just fine. Well real details up until the blurry part about my Windows 7 laptop purchase…

Was tempted to buy a 3rd but can't see myself needing it anywhere lol

        • My first two used the same info. However I later discoved that: Windows 8 Media Center Pack free upgrade is limited to 1 per e-mail address.

And because I got 2 keys with the same e-mail, I could only get 1 free Media Center key.

So instead of buying the Media Centre for $10 for my second computer, I bought another Win8 key for $15 and got another free Media Centre upgrade.

Had I known in the first place I could've saved $15, but as it turned out I've now got a spare Win8 key (Potentially for a Win8 server if storage pools turns out to be good). It was an impulse buy but was too cheap to worry about.

        • +1

Ah well, lesson learnt. But smart idea for buying another Win8 for $15 instead of MC for $10 I probably wouldn't have thought of that :)

I'm glad I bought my 2 copies after seeing where the price is at now… $399 ouch.

  • Those looking to get the Start Menu back for free, check out http://www.classicshell.net/

Does most of what the OP listed with "Start8" but it's open source and works wonderfully. HEAPS of advanced settings too!

Cheers to the OP too. Windows 8 is rockin' well on the laptop.

[EDIT] Just found a way to add the gadgets back in too! http://8gadgetpack.bplaced.net/

    • Oh dear, next you'll be bringing Aero back too ;)

I'm one of the extreme minority who is actually embracing Windows 8 in it's natural form. It does take some getting used to but I actually really like it now. I'll get back under my rock now.

  • One problem ive come across is some older programs needing to be installed but they want .net framework 3.5. On all the computers ive tried with win 8 none will install .net 3.5 on its own so follow this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H21HQqzQIT8 and it will work. no its not my video but it works.

  • Got an email re offering the $15 upgrade, valid til 28 Feb.
(I applied originally to get the upgrade promo code)
The purchase price has gone up to $400, but the promo code applies a $385 discount.
Have decided to purchase now because I am pretty sure I can just download ISO to DVD,
without changing my current PC, and install later when I am ready.
