If you bought windows 7 recently. I think there was an offer where you can upgrade to Windows 8 for $14.95 until sometime early next year.

    • +3

      yeah thats this one: http://www.windowsupgradeoffer.com/en-AU
      It's for all PC's purchased with Windows 7 between 2 June 2012 and 31 January 2013

      • Ah bugger, so technically a home built PC with Windows 7 IN the promo period doesn't actually qualify - only Windows 7 certified PCs?

Just went in and mine was 40 instead. I knew it was too good to be true!

        • +1

Did you enter the promo code on the final page?

        • Yep you have to enter the promo code which they gave it to you ¬$15 for win8 is not too bad

      • How do they determine that the PC was bought after 2nd June 2012 ? Do they ask for invoice ? If I bought my PC, lets say, in April or May, are there any chances for me to be eligible ?

EDIT : Never mind, got my answer…..Just purchased it for $15 for my 2 years old PC….They don't really check how old your PC is….Very happy about my purchase… :)

        • Me too..$15 for 5 old PCs…
cheapest OS i ever purchased in life!
just get this one as well!
          http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/82944

maybe i should do the same upgrades for other 4 PCs and sell it? any buyer out there?

        • Did you mean… 5 years old PC ?

        • Well its impossible for them check .. As you can use the offer on any PC not necessary the PC/laptop you bought windows 7 on recently. In addition your supposed to use the Windows 8 Assistance on the PC you intended to upgrade. So it might not work properly if you sold it.

Your better off buying it retail and try to resell it later if your gambit.

      • How do they confirm the date you bought it on?

        • They will most likely confirm it in relation to the sale date on your invoice.

        • Nope…they don't check anything….

        • true!

        • If it was elsewhere (like India or something) I'm certain they'd chase you up for a receipt but here in Australia they're using the trust system

    • +1

downloading it right now. bought a laptop yesterday, register @ the website, paid the 14.95$.

      • My mistake..ignore

    • +1

Downloading it right now using this offer. They only asked for the retailer and the date of purchase, didn't ask for a copy of the receipt or anything.. unless the Upgrade Advisor can tell when Windows was first activated on your computer, what is to stop you from lying and getting a $15 copy anyhow?I suspect that the program does check when Windows 7 was activated though.

      • How are you guys downloading, its says not available yet !

      • The Upgrade Advisor?

      • +1

Yes i agree with you, you just need to put the day after 2 June, it will send you the code immediately, they do not need you to prove it.

  • +3

What does the full retail version (Not upgrade) sell for?

    • Standard OEM version: $99.99
      http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832416…

Pro Upgrade with media $69.99 (introductory) $199.99 (full price)
      http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832416…

Win 8 Pro Pack, no media, bolt-on upgrade only (adds media center) $69.99
      http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832416…

There is currently no "retail" version yet… only upgrades are available at the moment. The closest thing that comes to retail is the $100 OEM package.

      • Harvey Norman upgrade with media is $58 for launch http://www.harveynorman.com.au/homepage/microsoft-windows-8-…

        • Typical HN ripoff… at Officeworks the retail upgrade is $48.72 (presumably until tomorrow)

      • Microsoft has relaxed it's rules for OEM, meaning that you can now buy OEM W8 just by itself. There's no need for it to be purchased alongside any hardware.

        http://www.neowin.net/news/windows-8-now-allows-consumers-to…

In the past Windows OEM licenses were only for system builders, now with these new rules it can be used for personal use.

      • You can get the Media Centre Pack for free until tomorrow by going to http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/feature-packs and filling in details under the heading "Add Windows Media Center to Windows 8 Pro". Note that you will have to activate it straight away though (the offer is time limited).

      • whats the difference between retail and OEM?

        • Retail was more intended for the general customer, and could be transferred to any PC you want (only one active at a time, though). OEM was intended mainly for manufacturers and PC builders (like CentreCom and MSY) for it to be preloaded on machines for sale to the general customers. OEM could only be used on the machine it was first installed on.

Most places don't really care about the whole OEM thing, and will just sell it to you by itself (which breached the licensing agreements, IIRC) or with another component (say, one stick of RAM). I'm assuming the OEM/retail system will remain the same with W8.

  • Stardock is going to get a CRAPLOAD of money haha
Also, is it $39.99 or $44.99?

    • +1

There's apparently a free alt called Pokki.
Doesn't look as traditional as the old Start menu, but it's free…

      http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2012/10/pokki-brings-the-star…

      • $5 is a small price to pay.. after you get $15 for a Windows 8 Pro legit key, (down from $40)

        • +1

Have you used it? Does it have issues with stability?

I'm not particularly fond of apps that have hooks to the windows shell, because if it crashes it sometimes also causes Win explorer to crash. Back then I was using something called QTTabbar which adds tabs to Windows explorer, but it was buggy as hell.

        • Not yet, wasn't a fan of Windows 8 Preview, will see after my exams :)

        • Very stable & there's been constant updates adding new features or fixing any existing bugs. Easily the best Start software & blends in nicely

        • I have issues with Windows 8. If I leave my laptop on unattended for like 3-4 hrs, it freezes. I have to restart my laptop.

It might be issue with my Laptop but I never had any issue when Windows 7 was installed.

I must say, with Windows 8, my laptop takes less time to boot and start programs.

Still lot of bugs in it. Good if installing as a second OS.

    • +1

Classic Shell is free and open source.

  • Harvey Norman's online price is now showing $58 with the disk. Pretty sure its the upgrade version: http://www.harveynorman.com.au/homepage/microsoft-windows-8-…

  • How big is the download files?

    • Just over 2GB from memory, not super big.

      • 2GB? hmmm…. I only hv vodafone 4GB/month mobile broadband….

        • +7

since it's vodafail, you'd never finish downloading. :P

          (j/k)

        • +6

Why the joke? It's probably true. :D

        • Go to a library.

        • +9

Or better yet, an Apple store.

  • +2

is it possible to reformat HDD (& clean install) using the downloadable "upgrade version"?

I have win 7 OS but I want to do a clean install (as opposed to keeping the settings & apps) as it has been 2 years (too many rubbish there).

    • +1

after downloading it gave me the option to burn an iso or stick it on a USB stick…so it looks like a clean install is possible

      • do you know how to get 64bit version?

i purchased mine when using 32bit laptop and im guessing it downloaded 32 bit version.

      • I'm pretty sure you can use this disc to make a clean install… so it looks like a very cheap way to install Windows 8.

        • nah, cause it wont let you activate…have to use hacks…(or reinstall over the top of its self apparently.)

        • Same as 7 then.

  • +4

From memory, if you download and install W8, there is no (easy way of) going back to 7 (or Vista, or XP) if you don't like it.

After playing around with the test version of 8, I won't be rushing in to use it.

    • +1
Use it on VMWare to see if you like Windows 8 first.

    • +7

same. i looked at the interface and my first urge is to start swiping my LCD screen. not good.

    • It's a PITA.

Had to do this on the Laptop as Lenovo had (has) not released updated drivers. Essentially when I updated to Win 8 I lost the ability to access the discrete graphics card/switchable graphics, the battery was draining 3x as faster and all the Lenovo apps just crashed. Pretty much turned the E520 into a netbook.

So, wiped everything and reinstalled Win 7, then downloaded all drivers from the Lenovo US site. Took half a day but at least everything now works again.

Question - Since i have activated Win 8 on the laptop, is there any issue with reinstalling it at a later date (when/if the drivers are updated) without any issues from MS?

  • Every 2nd released edition of Windows sucks ballz… Leave windows 8 alone if you have a pc.
Will only be good for tablets and Tv's

    • If you have ever used a WP7 mobile phone then you will know what to expect from this pos.
Like Matt says.. W8 sucks b*^$$.
I think it was designed by a pack of 14-18 y/o social media fanatics.

    • +5

      Leave windows 8 alone

Yes, matt, LEAVE WINDOWS 8 ALONE! :'(

      • I wonder how many people will get this reference, meme memory is short on da interwebz! ;)

        • is this a leave britney alone reference?

  • Why is everyone jumping onboard onto this one? Would you not want a Windows 8 Pro upgrade instead for say $80 or whatever the price might be?

    • This is pro upgrade as per title?

      • Sorry, tired eyes!

  • +36

    Get it for $14.99 instead!

Go to https://www.windowsupgradeoffer.com/en-AU/Registration - enter in details, make some up (i.e. purchase date 1st July 2012) and a model number of a laptop or something. It will then email you a promo code, run the upgrade tool, go through to buy it, select paypal or credit, then enter the promo code it emailed. Bobs your uncle, you'll find it reduced to $14.99. Pay and it gives you an upgrade product key immediately, saving $25 :)

    • Wow that was surprisingly easy.

    • +3

That was amazing. You sir/madam, deserve a cookie.

    • +2

I didn't get the promo code emailed - instead I logged into the website of
      https://www.windowsupgradeoffer.com/en-AU/MyOrder
And just put in whatever email you registered under + the order reference number thingy they generate in step 2, login and it will be there :)

They don't even send a confirmation email (no verify-my-email link to click)

If you are being asked to enter a windows 7 key in Jesseboy's link…
Try copy what I put in here, the model, place of purchase, date of purchase:

        not working anymore :(

        • Just worked for me. You must be doing something wrong.

      • I tried it and it works for me, downloading now…

      • I'm guessing this only works for 7? I tried it with my Vista code and there was no luck :(

        • +4

Try it again using Jesseboys method, but this time for the product information just chuck in Lenovo as the vendor, and Lenovo E525 as the model number. I got mine right away without having to provide a product key code….

        • Unfortunately no luck. "The product key entered is not valid. Please try again."

I've got the Windows Vista Home Premium copy. Odd.

Edit: Scrim, when did you claim to have bought the PC?

        • August the 10th.

        • +1

Yep for the Windows 8 upgrade offer. - but it doesn't even check.
Open up your "Allow other users to contact me" and I'll send you a quick account I've made for you.
          I used

        • You do know the $15 offer is only for Windows 7 PC. Windows Vista PC's don't count.

I just bought Win 8 Pro for the $15 using my 16 month old eMachines Win 7 HP laptop. It doesn't verify the purchase date info just that you set the date to after 2 June 2012.

        • +1

To qualify for the offer - you're supposed to have a Win 7 PC purchased
between 2 June 2012 and 31 January 2013, you can purchase a download of Windows 8 Pro at a special promotional price that varies by region.

That's to be able to get the server to send you a promo code. The cart thingo in windows 8 pro upgrade advisor doesn't check whether your PC is a Windows 7 PC (for the promo code to work at least)

        • Thanks cwongtech, I've opened up my private messaging. Thanks in advance for your help! (And Scrimshaw too)

I'm quite embarrassed that I can't get this to work on my own.

        • Do they then send you a new Win 8 key or do you have to recycle your old XP/Vista/7 key. In which case the XP/Vista wouldn't work would it? Anyone tried a $15 upgrade to XP or Vista?

        • Would they deactivate my copy later forcing me to buy at a higher price ?

        • do i still have to have a legit copy of Windows anything?

i gave my laptop to my cousin and currently use a mbp. but i do want a legit copy of win 8 for $15. is it possible?

        • .

        • They don't ask for any proof of purchase on anything, so I don't see how they could.

        • -1

Umm if you want an illegitimate license for Windows 8, why not just download a dodgey copy for free? If you want a legitimate license then pay the $39.

        • This is a legit copy.

        • Thanks, this was my problem.
I selected other and it requested my Win7 code.

        • read it again. no one stops you paying $39, when all the rest here are paying $14.99.

      • +1

Hey you have the same mobile number as me!!! :)

    • -1

yeah, but I can let you know how to get it for free.. just download a torrent……/sarcasum.

neither of them provide you with a valid license for windows 8, ie pirate or get it cheaper…

basically what im trying to say is that there is no point even doing this, you might as well just get a pirate copy as both are not legit copies!

    • You are a legend! :-)

  • [removed]

  • Am trying to upgrade, and I get a message telling me to "Change the folder or file name of C:\Users on drive C:."

I have tried unsuccessfully to rename Users. Am an administrator, have assigned myself as the owner and no joy.

I did change the user location to d drive using registry settings (as I have the SSD as my boot drive) is that a factor?

Thanks in advance for any help.

(Note, have also posted question on Atomicmpc website).

    • Fixed it. It was AVG stopping me from renaming C:\users, but the actual problem the install was trying to tell me was that I had made d:\ the default location for users in my registry.

Once I used regedit to set c drive as the location again, the update was able to proceed.

      • +5

        Dump AVG, absolute trash.

        • whats the best free option out there?

        • +6

MSE = Microsoft Security Essentials, which is built-in for Windows 8 :)

or you can download it here for previous versions of Windows
          http://windows.microsoft.com/mse

        • MSE is pretty darn good, true dat!

That said, if you want a good 3rd party option, you can't go past Avast…a lot of functionality for a very small footprint IMHO! :)

  • I think I'll need Microsoft to pay ME to upgrade to 8.

  • -1

Registered, got the $15 code. Said the PC was custom built from MSY which is more or less right. I spend 1K over the last month upgrading/rebuilding 3 PC's to Ivy Bridge (2) and Sandy Bridge (the HTPC). All 3 have new mobo's. Technically, I should be eligible and I am. Screw Harvey Norman, just get the full Win 8 Pro for $15 (the download looks like the OEM version), not even the "upgrade" for $60 or so.

  • +1

If you're running the free Windows 8 release preview you can use this to upgrade without a prior paid version of Windows. I just used this method to get Windows 8 Pro on my Mac in Bootcamp for $39. Thanks StringerB!
