super cheap
only $4.79

by default it comes with their stock tracking sim, and software instructions. However you can install it on your own GPS tracking servers, with your own sim, (if you know how to do it as it will be way way cheaper than stock subscription model, like may be $20-60 a year all up I think). Chuck on a Payas you Go sim like amaysim $10 max for sim in 1 year max (if you okay with optus network), or like other telstra network sims as I prefer (personally, $20 max for sim in a year)

then its easy to track your cars, keyrings, suitcase or whatever you want to put it on. Battery life is quite good like 1 month ish.

  • Just realised we could also just use the demo servers from traccar too. (its free server) so $0 server costs.

    https://www.traccar.org/demo-server/

  • Installed traccar but couldn't get notifications to work. Ended up with ruhavik using my Turkish apple for a year for 500TRY (5 devices). So around $25.

  • could someone measure the layout of the sim area

could this sim card socket squeeze in? https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/37385/111466/sim.png

there is also this, but i think it might be too big to solder directly onto the esim pads https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/37385/111468/sim2.jpg

    • Both are the wrong type.
You need to use the row of 8 pads with 0.5" spacing. The last 2 are not used in modern SIMs, so a 6-pin is OK.

      This should fit: https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005005898703545.html

The pad row is 1,5,2,6,3,7,4,8. Ignore the last two for a 6-pin socket.

      • ok, the one you linked flips open and is probably better than the others

        • Also jumped on. Just ordered one for $12 something and a sim card holder. Not the best solderer but gonna give it a go.

    • My wanway out for delivery today. Already got the sim socket from AliExpress. Not the best to solder. Anyone tried yet? Should be to remove the esim module with heat and then solder onto the pins and not using the first and last one?

      • check the pinouts. The 6-pin socket will be missing the last two, numbered 4 and 8. SIMs used to have 8 pads, but now only 6.

        https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/42865/111640/sim-socke…

After removing esim, check for any shorts between the 8 solder pads.
I think you want to glue the socket in place, apply external flux, then heat.

      • i don't have one, but this should be the pinout https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/37385/111639/s20.png N/C = not connected

do the 4 ground pins for the 6 pin tray holder shield match the PCB layout? or is the 6 pin nano tray holder narrower than the 8 pin micro holder? the datasheet says they are spaced 13mm apart. maybe an 8-pin micro-sim card tray is the optimal replacement part. might have to glue a nano tray

edit: i think the 6-pin nano-sim trays will be off centre. i think MUP-C791 8P micro-sim card tray might fit the existing pads https://s3.amazonaws.com/snapeda/datasheetsDrawing-C791.pdf

OK, I soldered the SIM socket in, quite easy I thought . It seemed to be a success.

        https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/42865/111727/sim-solde…

But bad news, when powered on, no VCC or VPP is appearing on the pins.
So kicking myself, I should have checked that on the pads before soldering.
A virgin tracker with eSIM shows 1.8V on VCC and VPP. So I may have done some damage when removing the esim, or when adding the sim socket.

Any suggestions before I attack the spare tracker (more gently) ?
        Mikael?

        • +1

Lol. Much better then I solder. Haven't gotten much further. Gonna get heat gun from father in law later this week so i can remove the esim module. They are home with covid after their cruise (surprise). I check the pads after removing the esim before soldering and post here. But won't be until few days.

          • @Mikael: My soldering iron did two pads at a time. I really should get a fine tip :)

            • @bargaino: As I said. I won't do it better. Just too many projects with soldering and keep putting them off. (Half way making an automatic lego sorter with RPI tensor flow and so on, don't think I finish it haha) Should practise more and perhaps invest in a good solder instead of a $10 one.

        • looks like the 6 pin tray just fits in and one edge of the shield even solders down

what is the resistance between VCC and GND on the sim tray? (with power off). near zero would indicate a short somewhere

is the second bottom pad in the row of 8 pads soldered to anything? (shouldn't be). there is a big blob of solder there.

besides the tray, there are also 1.8V and GND round copper test points closeby (you could also measure resistance between those points as well)

          • +1

@c64: looking at schematic for neoway N58 module, it supports two SIMs, and VCC for each SIM comes from the N58 module, either pin 21 or pin 35 https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/37385/111730/n58-vcc.p… . conveniently the pins are numbered on the N58. from the photos, pin 21 appears to be unused, pin 35 appears to be used, so measure the voltage between pin 35 and GND (pin 30 or pin 31). maybe the tracks run through vias to underneath the esim IC and have been damaged

            • @c64: Thanks,
pin 35 indeed connects to Vcc on mine.
So it seems to be software disabled. Perhaps the tamper switch? Before I opened it, 1.8V was present.
Sadly i did not test between opening, and applying heat.

If I had another spare, I might try removing esim, and adding regular one, without opening the case.

But then you'd almost certainly need to revert the firmware?

              • @bargaino: USIM1_VCC is described as "Both 1.8 V and 3 V SIM types are supported: activation and deactivation with an automatic voltage switch from 1.8 V to 3 V is implemented", so i assume it should just work for either sim card voltage.

is the N58 powered? there should be 3.4-4.2V on VBAT (pin 27)

i got my hands on one to continue the hack fest

the thing will run straight off USB so i've also disconnected the battery, and the light sensor which looks fragile

according to the manual, the red LED is for the battery, green LED is for GSM, and the blue LED is for location.

USIM1_VCC is only powered up when the sim card is in use. it won't be powered up if the green LED is off

i've taken off the esim and verified that the N58 module is still trying to communicate with the sim card (plug in USB, measure voltage between USB shield (GND) and USIM1_VCC and there is a momentary blip on the multimeter when the green LED flashes)

i'll have a fiddle with the software for flashing the device to determine whether i can download the current firmware and upload new firmware

    • Thanks! please update us.

    • (apologies if you're aware already)
Thread on bohdan git provides details for FW rollback (I think that was new FW in the former HW). I've not tried anything myself with this new eSIM device. Have 2 waiting.

I had a look at it over the weekend. I don't think the existing firmware can be read from the Neoway 4G N58. It is designed to be secure.

The linked method is for a 2G version which uses a different Mediatek MCU https://static.pepper.pl/comments/raw/A4zOt/16676217_1/re/10…

        The 4G N58 module is based on a Unisoc 8910DM MCU https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/37385/111981/n58-int.j…

Replacing the eSIM IC with a card holder gives a working mobile connection. I could send SMS commands to the N58

It might be possible to get the SDK for the N58 which would enable custom firmware (from scratch) to be flashed. The SDK provides an API for handling all the SMS, GPS, etc

        • Did you get SMS response with GPS location?

        • Ahh apologies. I had wrongly presumed the (new) module would respond to AT directly without any verify. If you've got sms you're part way there but, will probably get stuck at any device control commands (rather than simple read status & get info). If new device doesn't engage with AT and the sms auth PW is changed & unknown, it may be a harder hack than I was anticipating.

          • @xdpx: yes, it has a USB interface that you can send AT commands directly to. you just need to install the 8910 drivers from the github repository, plug in the USB and it comes up with multiple interfaces (AT, modem, etc) that you can communicate with using putty https://github.com/bohdan-s/WanWay-Tech-S20/blob/main/Neoway… . it also has a USB interface for flashing firmware if you first send a specific AT command

            • @c64: OK, that's positive. So current status is that we don't yet have known path to mod & define the tracURL/IP or set and confirm a network data link via user-mod SIM. I saw your earlier comment about sms response, so that establishes some basic utility without the monthly sub (nice work :). Can you advise what info it returns on STATUS and VERSION sms query? You might get network data by using a sim from same network as the eSIM, hopefully the sms query (I think it was just APN) will return that info.

              • @xdpx: VERSION#
                WW_4GS20_LA_DS_V01(A6231FE)_May 9 2023_13:51:52

                STATUS#

                LOCKIP,WWDSS20,UNLOCK#
                ERROR:100

                • @c64: GPRS link up and signal indicate you've got mobile data link, a good start (although also means it can comm with the device's usual server). gps unfixed is likely because indoors, nothing to worry. the lockip error means, I speculate, that it is refusing the wwdss20 string to unlock config for IP.

Does APN# return any information? It used to return a1.net

Unfortunately I'm away for the next 3 weeks so will be a while before I can tinker with it. Someone on pepper appears to have had success with a similar FW version: https://www.pepper.pl/comments/permalink/17736119 [not sure in retrospect, it is likely last batch of old FW]

There was a comment on Git from Pawlak with a FW version of Y2517_S20_DS_1_V02_2023.05.02_1 [which to me reads a bit closer to what you're seeing with the new device]

                  • @xdpx: APN is mdata.net.au . the SIM is ALDI payg, so i presume the APN is unlocked

                    SERVER,0,1.2.3.4,9999,0# returns "ERROR:100"
                    WHERE# returns "No Data!"
URL# "GPS Is Not Fixed Now!"
                    GPRSET# "GPRS:ON;APN:telstra.wap,;;Server:1,WW9016.gpsog.com,9016,0;URL:http://maps.google.com/maps?q=;"

WW9016.gpsog.com might be the server it is communicating with

I discovered there is a GSM antenna embedded in one half of the plastic case. The board gets better reception when it is in the case.

                    • @c64: Yes, appears they've left apn set alone (auto), presumably given the WW variant goes to a lot of destinations and it will roam from the Mobilkom A1 service-provider. url# and where# won't report anything whilst STATUS# gps reports 'UNFIXED' (or 'OFF' - mine activates only when moving/alert). Those 1 info codes URL/WHERE might still work when you have gps:FIXED and enough 'svs used in fix' satellites contacted (will enumerate which ones after signal:). server reports error because of the fail with lockip, unlock#

Yah WW9016.gpsog.com is same as the former device.

                    • @c64: No apn is not that

It's Telstra apn, read my earlier comment

$2.79 right now if anyone needs it for battery or testing or anything else

    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0BN53G3WN?psc=1&smid=A1RTRSR87…

  • They are still available with sim slot if your happy to pay 19.95

    • ok, where from and how do you know?

This listing is $9, and says it comes with SIM. But can it be unlocked?

      https://www.amazon.com.au/wanwaytech-Tracker-Vehicles-Tracki…

      • I got a bunch delivered last week all with sim and the same production date as ones I unlocked previously.

I assume the manufacture maintains different skus in Amazon so the mains SKU has newer stock whereas the other SKU doesn't sell as well and has older stock

    • i got two from wanwaytech a short while back and they had esims. so definitely not from that seller

      • Can Confirm. Wanwaytech esim. Just use as cheap battery. Got one today. Got parts to solder sim module but not really knowledgeable in it.

    https://www.amazon.com.au/wanwaytech-Tracker-Vehicles-Tracki…
Just got a largish delivery today $8,99 all produced july 2023 with sim slots.

    Unlocked and working fine

    YMMV

    • bought one from that. hopefully i get the same, with sim slot

      • Same. Got 2 esim now from wanway seller. If anyone in Perth area wanna have a go i got one to give away and got sim.tray I got from aliexpress. not good enough with soldering lol. I blame the cheap solder :)

      • and i finally got 1 with sim slot! Thanks @hikaru78!

    • thanks. i ordered a couple and they all had sim card trays. i haven't checked the version. trackerone branded. the outer carboard sleeves on the boxes look a bit scuffed so they must be old stock

i'm still keen on seeing if i can upload some custom firmware to the esim ones.

        Version: S20_4G_LA_V01_Dec 1 2022_15:44:47

        i had to do:

        LOCKIP,WWDSS20,UNLOCK#
        UNLOCKIP_OK

        SERVER,1,my.domain,5023,0#
        SERVER_OK

        (SERVER,0,1.2.3.4,5023,0# produced ERROR:103)

        LOCKAPN,WWDSS20,UNLOCK#
        UNLOCKAPN_OK

        APN,my.apn#
        APN_OK

server & apn setting then confirmed with GPRSSET#

and GPS:FIXED after a short while using STATUS#

so everything appears to be working!

      • Last order from tracker one I got esim. Got 2 of them now. Getting another one deliver d today from link in comments. Hopefully sim card one. Wondering if possible to change esim details to your own? Or totally locked the board? Perhaps an easier approach?

        • Did listing say sim card, or embedded sim?

        • Is the label on the side of the box different? The SIM card ones I received are labelled X00160N2UX

I think the eSIM ICs provide a unique SIM card number (IMSI). I don't think the firmware cares what card is in there, but changing the SIM profile on the eSIM IC probably involves using the N58 firmware. Maybe there is an AT command for setting the IMSI?

I will try uploading a "hello world" program onto one of the eSIM trackers when I get time. If that works I think it would be straight forward to write some custom tracking firmware.

I actually emailed Neoway Global a while back to see if I could get the SDK but they never responded. Someone seems to have uploaded the SDK for a different project here https://github.com/nivedita1811/N58_FW_Tork .

        • The one I received today from this listing was sim card. NOT ESIM. wanwaytech GPS Tracker for Vehicles, Car, Kids, and Assets. 4G LTE GPS Tracking Device. Robust and Splashproof, Tracking Devices for Cars Hidden - Subscription Required. https://amzn.asia/d/bFEH1Tz
