super cheap
only $4.79

by default it comes with their stock tracking sim, and software instructions. However you can install it on your own GPS tracking servers, with your own sim, (if you know how to do it as it will be way way cheaper than stock subscription model, like may be $20-60 a year all up I think). Chuck on a Payas you Go sim like amaysim $10 max for sim in 1 year max (if you okay with optus network), or like other telstra network sims as I prefer (personally, $20 max for sim in a year)

then its easy to track your cars, keyrings, suitcase or whatever you want to put it on. Battery life is quite good like 1 month ish.

      • Took a few messages to set up, 12c/message and 1c data.

      • They have the same offer for $10 at Woolw this week, I may switch to that I think and save my 250gb just to keep @xpdx happy :)

built the server for fun, and stalking the wife, free for everyone, small instance aws ec2, with mysql backend, hopefully enough for everyone of us.

change your stream url to https://totalgpstracker.com:5023 from this wanway gps
    or https://totalgpstracker.com:5055 from "traccar mobile"

    • Good idea to put my personal location details into this random server right? 🤣

But thanks anyway! I need to work out a CGNAT solution in the meantime

i got a free alibaba cloud working on traccar, (recommended to remove their inbuilt tracking spyware too). Free for 1 yr only tho

thanks to some else for doing the hard research and stuff, i just followed their footsteps and guidence (and seeked some help from them)

    • OzBargainerTracker.uhoh :)

    • I think your server has crashed
      @bonbon

      • Just checked, no problem now

    • thanks champ…will get on board….please have a message list for users if and when there is any maintenance etc..

      • will do

  • Does anyone's battery charge over 83%? Mine seems to be stuck there.

      • OK great, mine is plugged into a usb car charger all the time so it's not a huge concern but I may cycle the battery just to keep in as happy as can be (Whilst I lock it in a car during an Australian summer lol)

  • Thanks so much for this OP and everyone else who's offered help in the thread.

I've just bought a new motorbike which has a usb port under the rear seat. This thing is absolutely perfect for it.

Took a little bit to set up but well worth it.

  • Does anyone know what the data usage is if you set it up using your own server? I've got the server setup and just waiting for a Kogan SIM to arrive but its Vodafone…. going to wait for a Boost SIM deal, but interesting to know what the data usage is.

    • +1

Unfortunately I changed sim during a 50km day and can't access the account's billing portal to tell you all the usage since I ported away. Will take a few days for Aldimobile's usage to catch up but here's a guide: 13 feb 8km - 170kb

I'll update this over the next few days after Aldi's usage reflects on their portal, if you want.

I think an amaysim $10/year is all I'll need for the time being, to be honest!

      • Yes please! Do let me know! I am going to try Kogan, but then realised it is Vodafone. Going to try and wait for a boost sale and then get a 12 month sim. I need something for two GPS units, one for each car, so looking for something long term. I got a server up and running.

        • They use so little data I think VF's coverage should be adequate, I'll report back in the next few days and update usage accordingly… whatever you do, choose a per-kb billing service, these things sip data so use hardly anything.

I'm only using Aldi because I had a few prepaid sims that are expiring soon (that I had on the $5/year aldi initial credit that they don't offer anymore. Going to test on amaysim after the aldimobile ones expire (just to ensure amaysim does per-kb billing) and then probably stay on that.

          • +1

@bdl: I got a amaysim $11 from Woolworths 2 weeks ago. Got $25 worth of PAYG (365 day plan). After initial setups with codes and test url# few times. I haven't even used $1 yet (mostly was the messages) . Hardly uses any data at all. Just the 12c/message if using that. I am using ruhavik app. Not set up my server yet. This works though. Got anoth r one on its way so setting up server then. Done 330km and lots of trips.

            • @Mikael: Great - thankyou for letting me know re: amaysim. I also got one of those $18 amaysim sims on sale at Woolworths in preparation :)

              • @bdl: Can set it up with any active sim i believe. Put one in and send the commands. After you change the apn probably dont work anymore so do that last. Haven't tried myself but cannot see why this method shouldn't work. Might give it a go with my new one coming next week.

                • +1

@Mikael: Yes you can, I set my devices up with an unlimited SMS sim then I swap to the cheapo annual ones.

APN setting doesn't affect SMS receiving/sending, so no problem there :)

        • 14 feb - 2.49 km - 131kb
15 feb - 0km - 177kb (This was interesting however it may just be that the unit uses about 130-170kb keep alive data per day)
16 feb - 18.85 km - 2.6kb (I think this may be in error due to Aldi mobile taking up to 48hrs to post usage)

Have only used 880kb for the week so far, so happy with that :)

          • @bdl: ok for 16feb it updated and the 18.85km used 135kb all up

            • @bdl: What do you have the frequency for updating set to? 10 seconds? I updated mine to be 5 seconds. Got it working and in the car this morning off an Amaysim card that I got cheap at Coles.

              • @geekcohen: Whatever the default is (haven't changed it). Where the car is parked has no line of sight to the sky so it could be that it's just pinging the network when it doesn't get a GPS lock. I'm just testing the battery life/data usage on default settings at the moment before I tweak.

                • +1

@bdl: Okay, its default is 10 seconds and the lowest it'll do is 5 seconds. Did a pretty good job this morning for the daycare drop-off. I've got it plugged in via USB for charging and to advise when "ignition" is on via the server. Just in the cab at the moment but will put it into the canopy (which has 12v ignition) soon.

I will see how it goes for a few more drives, but happy thus far.

                  • @geekcohen: oh can you configure the "ignition" sensor on traccar server to report the charging status? I was just the colour of the battery as a guide :)

                    • +1

@bdl: Yeah, it seems to have "ignition on" when it is "charging" in the car. It also shows the battery status and % charge on the server itself as well.

                      • +1

@geekcohen: Awesome thanks for letting me know - oh, I just realised why i didn't notice that - since I don't have the server webpage open when I'm driving :D

                        • +1

@bdl: I only saw it on my desktop the status of it. So far pretty happy with it.

                      • @geekcohen: Interesting, I just tested mine - the server shows "charging" when charging but never shows "ignition" as being on. We must have different firmware revisions.

                        • @bdl: What version of Traccar are you running? I am on 5.12.

                          • @geekcohen: 5.12 also - I was thinking more the GPS tracker device firmware versions differ

Any novel uses of the light sensor on this unit? Does it trigger a SOS or TAMPER with traccar?

  • anybody knows whats the command to set the timezone? i tried GMT,E,+10,0# but doesnt seem to be correct. Cheers!

    • +1

      nearly - GMT,E,10,0#

(and you can check with GMT#)

      • hmmm.. i initially tried without +, but seems its behind 10hours. so i did with +. not sure now if its the gps tracker or traccar that i should be updating timezone 😆

        • +1

set the tracker to GMT (ie GMT,E,0,0#) and set the correct local timezone in traccar. I was playing around with both options and this works the best, plus you don't have to change the tracker for daylight savings. Just remember all SMS responses (eg: if you request a URL# ) will be timestamped with GMT/UTC.

plus is east and minus is west. if you want GMT+10 then do GMT,E,10,0# if you wanted GMT-10 you do GMT,W,10,0#

          • +1

@bdl: i tried GMT,E,0,0# and have set traccar server to sydney time. hopefully that resolves it. thanks for your help! ☺️

$7.99 again but looks like shipped from overseas

  • So installed windows addon for traccar. What servername do i add to the S20 device?
Is below correct? Cannot see it in traccar. I opened the port for S20
    SERVER,0,MYEXTERNALIPADDRESS,PORT,0#

    • what's the external DNS name you're forwarding to your windows box?

if it's bighairyozbargainer.com then you would use server,1,bighairyozbargainer.com,5023,0#

otherwise if only using IPs and not DNS names, then if your external IP is 69.70.71.72 then use server,0,69.70.71.12,5023,0#

also make sure you're forwarding tcp and udp 5023 from your router to your windows box, and that your windows box has a static IP internally

      • Thought just pointing to my external and port would be all i needed to add it and get it visible.

        • When it hits your external port at your router, the router needs to know what machine to send it to - in this case, your windows box

          • +1

@bdl: thanks, got the port forward. Gonna kick the router. Hopefully all working after. Yep, after reboot it was there. arghh, The old reboot.

  • Sorry for asking here. Got 2 in traccar and one in Ruhavik. Ruhavik ok with one device.

In traccar cannot get notifications happening when moving. I see the trips and so on. What have I forgotten? Got server setup on win 11.

    • Notifications are in settings, you need to create notification yourself fir specific task (like when it exits a specific geofence area, you need to create geofence area, or like battery low etc.)

By default you should have web notifications with no problems for email and command type notifications you need to open other ports to get notifications on your server (do so at your own risk, the port opening bit)

      • Thanks. On ruhavik app works fine as notification when start and stop a trip. I look into what port and settings needed.

        • Ahh ruhavik is an app??? Didn't know.

I was referring to notifications when using traccar to track it, which has been mentioned by GitHub profile and many others here

          • +1

@USER DC: Yeah an app. Works perfect. But paid for more then one device and cannot change much if not under paid. Does few things for free.

And yes want to use traccar but want to get notifications on my phone when moves. Got one for my son who have it on his ebike. I see few comments about vibration. Is that if someone removes it? I should use GitHub lol

    • Got traccar running but not notifications. Ended up using my Turkish apple Id for Ruhavik ~$2.50/month to enable all functions and 5 devices. Would be good on traccar though.

  • can anyone who bought one recent confirm that the it can still be configured to use a 3rd party server?

    • Got one 2 or 3 weeks ago. Able to put on traccar. Didn't do any updates prior or device.

    • I got a couple from this deal and both able to get traccar.

I suggest you restart your device a few times may be out it on charge during that time too.

And check sim card inserted properly too.

Sometimes users just have not inserted Sim correctly, or the machine itself is glitching with power and thinking sim not changed and uses old sim settings (aka of no sim), so just restart a few times

  • Back to $7.99

  • I just got one today and unfortunately found no sim card / sim slot on it. Seem like they changed the PCB design to integrated sim card now

      • +2

It looks like this now. So no sim slot at all. The reading on the new chip is H2231H31

        • +2

searching for a datasheet for H2239H31 doesn't bring up any matches. i'm guessing it is an esim IC. i don't know enough about sims and esims. possibly the esim IC is pin compatible with a traditional sim card

the pads for a sim card holder are still there (the 8 pads on one side and 4 other ground pads). the tracks from sim card holder pads just run to the pins on the esim IC

          • @xdpx: I think you are right that they are moving to esim to block the use of 3rd party sim.

I did broke open the shell (2 torx + 2 phillips head screws), beside that chip the rest of the PCB does looks the same as that page photoes.

From the box manufactured date is 11-09-2023, hope it helps someone.

          • @xdpx: I wonder if they are eSIM, or just standard SIM with a different form factor.

        • +1

          Hmm i think i spoilt it 😂

they saw this thread and be like we aint earning any $ no widner why because of thi sorry thread and github.

        • Probably esim but perhaps small chance they flipped it to conceal sim under? It also got 8 connectors soldered so might be there?

          • @Mikael: I looked at the other side of that PCB but sadly there is no sim

            • @Squirtle: Thanks for checking. Won't order more.

              • +1

@xdpx: I am very eager to take it apart. It is just that I dont have the right equipment for the job (micro soldering kit). One day when the right deal pop up I might give it a go

    • +2

Sim card slot is under the sticker

      where it says

      warranty voted if removed
If anything different, send photos here like above commentator.

  • Just ordered 2 more. Hopefully as mentioned in comments not the version that doesn't have SIM under sticker. That would cover all cars and bikes. Or just 2 spare ones.

  • i have ordered 1 last week and 2 again 3 days ago. i opened them just now and unfortunately seems all are esim 😟

      • from the PCB traces there it looks like you could re-introduce a sim socket :)

          • @xdpx: I ordered one yesterday at $8 and too late to cancel the order so I'm thinking maybe it's just a spare battery for my other units.

I did order another on the 18th Feb but haven't opened it yet (It's interstate) - not sure if they'd switched to esims by then.

Took a look on aliexpress and a lot of the micro sim holders are slide type rather than hinge type - may switch to a full size socket as it will be easier to solder larger contacts

              • +1

@xdpx: Fingers crossed they went the lazy option and just pre-flashed a bunch of esim chips and altered PCB rather than adding any esim programming code

                https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005005864661113.html is a 5 pack - nearly same price as a $8 unit :)

https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005006227768149.html if you hate yourself and want to solder nano pads

                  • @xdpx: Looking at @Squirtle's photo again I just noticed that serial number starting with I think 8943010… looking at the physical SIM I removed from my last tracker it starts with the same numbers… so yes, I think you're right, it's not an esim module :)

                  • @xdpx: I suspect my Aliexpress order is going to get expensive all of a sudden when I treat myself to some new gear lol - just like your credit card bill is going to increase as you treat yourself to a new monitor :)

                  • +2

@xdpx: Ok I do have a spare micro sim tray laying around. So I may just order a soldering kit from amazon and give it a try tomorrow.

                    • @Squirtle: Where did you get your micro sim trays from?

                      • +1

@bdl: A few very old phone PCB. Look like it has 8 pin standard pin and 4 legs

                    • +2

@Squirtle: I overestimated my ability too much and failed miserably, cant even take the esim chip out of the PCB. So I may leave the work to someone more capable :D

                        • +1

@xdpx: with the right tools it is very easy. the easiest way to get the IC off is with a hot air gun. i imagine it would be near impossible using a soldering iron because it is most likely soldered to the pcb underneath in the centre https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/37385/111351/esim2.jpg

                          example: https://youtu.be/ysi_tlkKWJU?t=239

even something like an ozito heat gun with a narrow nozzle might work, but it has no temperature or air flow control compared to a proper desoldering hot air gun. you want around 350-400 deg C. too close/too hot/too long and it will lift tracks and burn things. you'd also want to wrap several layers of aluminium foil over surrounding areas to prevent plastic being melted and other components being affected

                          • +1

@c64: out of curiosity, i tried an ozito heat gun, the round concentrating nozzle it came with, low speed, highest temperature setting, about 10cm from bottom of nozzle to PCB, swirled it around slightly to distribute the heat, and it worked surprisingly well. i was able to pick components off PCBs with tweezers without damaging the tracks. the problem is that even on the lowest speed setting, the air flow is too high and tiny components in the tweezers tend to go flying off, never to be found again. so indeed it is suitable as a poor man's desoldering hot air gun.

                          • @c64: You are thinking too much. The eSIM is not near any other components, so I just used a scalpel and soldering iron (optional) to remove. Ceramic cap comes off first.

                            • @bargaino: could you share a photo of resulting pcb layout please

                • @bdl:

if you hate yourself and want to solder nano pads

What do you mean? They look the same as the pads on the other one to me, and the correct match for the circuit board.
Also, cheap & fast post. thanks!

      • to me it looks like an esim IC https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/37385/111304/esim.png . it is tiny compared to even the smallest sim card form factor. the easiest way to get the IC off is using a hot air gun. i suppose you could also cut the tracks going to the IC. then if you can find an identical sim card socket you can solder it on 8 pads on the side.

but first i would test if you can actually modify the settings. shield it in a metal can or with aluminium foil to block 4G signals. maybe test with your mobile phone beforehand to verify that the shielding works.

        • shield it in a metal can

or just rip the esim out. I did that and connected USB to my computer.

usb 1-6.4: USB disconnect, device number 17
usb 1-6.4: new high-speed USB device number 18 using xhci_hcd

Then gives a MAC address, and an ethernet device appears.
Tcpdump shows just igmp and ICMP6 packets. Does that mean it is trying to phone home by any chance?

Now what do we do?? Any way to get a serial connection for AT commands?

          • @bargaino: i am under the impression that the device needs an active sim to modify the settings, so you need to solder on a sim card tray, or if you are adventurous you could probably solder wires directly to the sim card.

            • @xdpx: Thanks! Bookmarked. I might wait for the sim holder first, see if my soldering works.

    • Just cancelled my order for 2 I put in today. Seems like they come with E-Sim from now on. Good as long it lasted.

      • You could keep them as a donor battery for your non-esim models

      • Certainly agreed, it was only GPS tracker that was so cheap of its kind, and allowed so much good tracking with external servers.

Now, I reckon those who didnt get it even at $7.99 price tag regret not jumping onboard of it. as pretty sure other similar models would be costing a lot more than that, (may be like $40 ish ??)

    • you might wanna try other brands honestly like this one
but it costs quite a bit $70 (however no subscription or monthly fee or complex server setup required). But good thing is seller is not gonna play dodgy tricks to hinder ability to track etc. (seller is already getting decent money upfront for all this, unlike wanwaytech who sold for $5-$20 (more like $0-15 as they gotta pay selling, taxes, shipping etc. charges too) and got $0 back in return for them on so many devices)

      • Do these work with Traccar or you have to use their own website?

        • +1

I think have to use their app or something like that. (So no sever side headache to worry about)

Don't think it would work with traccar.

That being said, However it's not really easy to find out traccar compatible devices (that too ones being available on Amazon or easy retailer)

      • Is there a way to tell from the product description if a subscription or monthly fee is required?
